Regina Coeli da Silveira e Silva, Ph.D. is a full professor in the Department of Social Communication at Universidade Salgado de Oliveira in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She holds a Ph.D. in Telecommunications from Ohio University, Athens. She has lectured in North American universities, including the University of North Carolina, the University of Connecticut, and Ohio University. Her last book chapter on crisis communication in the Brazilian context is published in Culture and Crisis Communication: Transboundary Cases from Nonwestern Societies (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2017). “Mariana ever again? Brazil’s Bromadinho dam bust says otherwise. Why crisis communication must match action”
Why should stakeholders believe what an organization says when its actions are diametrically opposite its rhetoric? We use the Brumadinho dam collapse, Brazil’s worst dam disaster, as a case to illustrate the contradictions between the government and the mining company’s rhetoric and their actions, and the lessons for crisis communicators.
