Chile Forest Fire Leaves At Least 12 Dead, 2000 Homes Destroyed

In the port city of Valparaiso, Chile,  a fire has killed at least 11 people, with the death toll steadily rising, and destroyed 500 homes, according to Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet. Atleast 10,000 people were evacuated including 200 female inmates at a prison. With hot dry winds stoking the embers, some of the fires that authorities had declared contained broke out again as a second night fell. Fires they thought were contained 24 hours after they started Saturday kicked up again with Sunday afternoon’s winds and raged out of control, threatening more neighborhoods.

The fire initially started Saturday afternoon in a ravine next to ramshackle housing on one of Valparaiso’s hilltops, and rapidly spread as hot ash rained down over the wooden houses and narrow streets that lack effective water systems. Electricity failed as the fire grew, with towering flames turning the night sky orange over a darkening, destroyed horizon.

Schools in Valparaiso were closed Monday due to because some of the schools were damaged and others were overflowing with evacuees. The fires destroyed at least 2,000 houses by Sunday evening, and the death toll rose to 12. Three of the 12 victims were burned so badly that they had to be identified by DNA tests the national forensics service. Atleast 600 people were treated at hospitals, mostly for smoke inhalation.

This is the city’s worst fire since 1953, when 50 people were killed. President Bachelet declared the entire city a catastrophe zone and put the military in charge of maintaining order. The fires have caused the shelters to overflow and looting is on the rise. Police, officers, and firefighters have been called in to order.

Women From Utah Killed 7 Babies That She Gave Birth To In Over 10 years, And Then Hid Bodies In Garage

A woman in Utah was accused of killing 7 babies that she gave birth to in over 10 years. The woman hid the bodies in the garage of her home. The cop made the discovery of seven dead babies in her garage of her former home and six of them were stuffed in cardboard boxes. The woman Megan Huntsman age 39 is believed to be the mother of all the dead infants. Police suspect that the infants were killed between 1996 and 2006.

The neighbors were shocked when they found out because, they never knew that she was pregnant and she used to even babysit the grandchildren of a neighbor. She didn’t seem like that type of person. Huntsman was charged with six counts of murder. It wasn’t made clear on why she was not charged with the seventh murder. The cops were called to the house on Saturday after Huntsman’s ex-husband Darren West discovered one of the dead babies while cleaning out the garage of the home where Huntsman had previously lived.

The officers searched the garage and found six more babies in cardboard boxes. The neighbors said that Huntsman’s three older daughters aged 13 to 20, still live in the house, which is owned by Darren West’s parents. Megan Huntsman moved out of the house in 2011, and she left her daughters alone to live there to fend for themselves. The police say that the ex-husband who is believed to have fathered the infants was not a suspect in the infanticide. Roberts was recently released from prison after serving some time on drug-related charges. This is a very tragic story. The woman could’ve given her babies up for adoption if she didn’t want to keep then versus killing them after they were born. Police are going to investigate this story further to see why the woman killed her seven babies.

Hacker Released From Jail Due To Jurisdiction Loophole

Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer is a cyber hacker who was sentenced to over 3 years in jail for hacking into and taking information from thousands of iPad owners. He hacked and AT&T public server and was able to obtain hundreds of thousands of email addressed linked to iPads. He then shared this information to online new site, Gawker. I personally think that Gawker should also be addressed for this because they knew that the addresses were not acquired in an ethical fashion.

Auernheimer was released from jail because he was tried fro his crimes in New Jersey. No one seems to know why he was charged in his crimes in New Jersey because he was in Arkansas when he accessed the server, and the servers that he hacked were located in Atlanta and Dallas. Because of this, it is difficult to decide where he should be tried, but the prosecutors had no reason doing so in any state that was not related to the crime. Since the crime of hacking is a very new thing, the laws are still trying to catch up. Hacking can be done from all over the world, it makes it very difficult to catch and prosecute these criminals. His lawyer is also arguing that the information that Auernheimer collected was publicly accessible, so it may just be a matter of ethics.

Although Auernheimer has been released, but it is possible that he will still be tried for his crimes in the appropriate state. He has already served over a year of his sentence, so what will happen next is still unknown.

The Masters: Bubba and Low Viewing Numbers

It was that time a year again where the flowers were starting to bloom and the freshly cut grass was ready to bear the weight of the Masters. The Masters, the first major championship of the year, is one of the most beautiful events but this year there was something a bit different. With Tiger Woods not competing, the aura was lost around this event and television viewing was down significantly from years in the past. The game of golf is looking for the next big thing and no one seems to be stepping up as that go to athlete that resembles a superstar. Bubba Watson might be the closest thing we have to look forward to as he won his 2nd green jacket.

The green jacket was presented to the elaborate, pink driver swinging lefty once again after a stellar final round that displayed his heart and mental stability on the course. Watson was paired in the final group against an up and coming 20 year old that held a three shot lead over Watson in the early stages of the round. Jordan Speith (20) crumbled after the turn and fans didn’t see this coming. Playing so well all weekend it was hard to watch the 20 year old loose control of his game and eventually hand the title to the deserving Bubba Watson. The PGA is looking forward to a great season and fans are waiting for the next big thing to emerge out of the darkness and bring excitement back to the game we all love.

The Guardian US and Washington Post were awarded the most prestigious Pulitzer prize on Monday for coverage of secret surveillance by the U.S. National Security Agency

Reuters won in international reporting for its coverage of the violent persecution of a Muslim minority in Myanmar who in efforts to flee often fall into the hands of brutal human-trafficking networks.
The celebrated prizes, awarded by Columbia University, are the most respected in U.S. journalism and can bring badly needed attention and recognition to newspapers and websites suffering from economic pressures and budget constraints.
The prize-winning work by the Guardian US and The Washington Post in the Pulitzer’s public service category was based on documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who revealed details of global electronic surveillance by the U.S. spy agency.
Reporting on the leaks not only sparked international debate over the limits of government surveillance but prompted President Barack Obama to introduce curbs on NSA spying powers.
“We are particularly grateful for our colleagues across the world who supported the Guardian in circumstances which threatened to stifle our reporting,” Guardian Editor in Chief Alan Rusbridger said in a statement.
“And we share this honor, not only with our colleagues at The Washington Post, but also with Edward Snowden, who risked so much in the cause of the public service which has today been acknowledged by the award of this prestigious prize,” he said.
Russia granted Snowden temporary asylum last year after the U.S. Justice Department charged him with violating the Espionage Act.
In giving Reuters its first Pulitzer for text coverage, the board commended Jason Szep and Andrew R.C. Marshall for their “courageous reports” on the Rohingya, who in their efforts to flee the Southeast Asian country often fall victim to human-trafficking networks.
“For two years, Reuters reporters have tirelessly investigated terrible human-rights abuses in a forgotten corner of the Muslim world, bringing the international dimensions of the oppressed Rohingya of Myanmar to global attention,” Stephen Adler, Reuters editor-in-chief, said in a statement.

Water and the Ways It Can Improve Your Life.

Many people have been told for years that you must drink 8 glasses of water a day to be properly hydrated. After further testing, scientist have discovered that this is not the case. Although, that doesn’t mean that people should start drinking less. It’s still very important to drink as much as you can. Here are six reasons to keep a water bottle on you at most times.

1. Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. When you’re low on fluids, the brain triggers the body’s thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee. Just try to drink anything but alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the brain and kidney communication and causes excess excretion of fluids which can then lead to dehydration.

2. Water Can Help Control Calories. For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn’t have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help. Food with high water content tends to look larger, its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full. Water-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, oatmeal, and beans.

3. Water Helps Energize Muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. Follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fluid intake before and during physical activity. These guidelines recommend that people drink about 17 ounces of fluid about two hours before exercise. During exercise, they recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating.

4. Water Helps Keep Skin Looking Good. Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. But don’t expect over-hydration to erase wrinkles or fine lines, says Atlanta dermatologist Kenneth Ellner, MD. You can also help “lock” moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

5. Water Helps Your Kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine. Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate. When you’re getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions. If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones, especially in warm climates.

6. Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function. Adequate hydration keeps things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. When you don’t get enough fluid, the colon pulls water from stools to maintain hydration — and the result is constipation. Adequate fluid and fiber is the perfect combination, because the fluid pumps up the fiber and acts like a broom to keep your bowel functioning properly.

Netherlands Adopts Glow-in-the-Dark Roads

The Netherlands being the forward thinking and boundary pushing country they are have replaced streetlights on a small stretch of highway lasting about 500 meters long with glow in the dark road markings. These road marks, created by Studio Roosegaarde, was promised back in 2012, but has had difficulty being put into use due to a lot of government red tape that needed to be cut through. Studio Roosegaarde is the social design lab of Daan Roosegaarde. It’s based in both Waddinxveen, Netherlands and Shanghai, China. The studio has the vision of bringing technology, design, and art to the real world and exploring on their relationships with real people.

Roosegaarde Studio’s founder Daan stated that he was in his car in the Netherlands and was amazed by the millions we spend on roads, but no one really seems to care about them. So much money is being put into powering streetlights for hours at a time, when the road marks would be able to save a massive percentage of the energy. The markings are said to be powered by sunlight and have enough charge throughout the day to last about eight hours.

Although the product has just come out, and obviously has not been thoroughly tested enough to see what weather and wear and tear can do to the strips, the idea of saving a massive amount of energy from streetlights to an almost Tron-like future is very exciting. If this becomes internationally used it will be a just the first step to a very strong and green future.

End of the Semester Stresses

‘Twas the week before finals, when all through the campus, not a professor was relaxing, not even a student.

Not quite yet are students around campus packing up their backpacks for their summer plans, two more weeks of spring semester until the start of summer internships and classes.

A few thoughts are on the minds of all UCF students right now:

“Holy smokes it’s so hot outside.” The heat of summer is upon all Floridians as 80- degree weather is once again a daily promise. Humidity and rain forecasts are the first items to look for in the morning.

“What grade do I need to get on my final to get an [A, B, C… etc.]?” The answer to this question either boosts your confidence or it leaves you crying.

“Do I have [strong] enough coffee at home?” Those all-nighters are coming soon. Time to stock up on much needed coffee. I personally recommend Café Bustelo or Café Pilón.

“Where’s the nearest Starbucks/ Panera?” Quick my WiFi is out… where can I get free WiFi and grab a quick cup of jo or bread bowl at the same time?

“My bank account… oh no…” Or lack there of… Few weeks until I can work full time and actually be able to pay for things or hangout with friends.

“Where am I living next year?” The long process of housing questions begins. House? Apartment? On-campus? Shuttle service? Nice pool? Cable system? Price? Where is the nearest Publix? Etc.

Good luck with finals! May the curve be ever in your favor.

Liverpool wins thrilling match vs Manchester City, control their own destiny for the title

Sunday’s match-up between English league heavyweights Manchester City FC and Liverpool was the potential turning point in the title race, with Liverpool winning an exciting game in which Liverpool won in dramatic fashion towards the last 10 minutes of the game. Manchester City not only suffered a blow to their title hopes, but a heavy blow was dealt to their squad as their linchpin in midfield, Yaya Toure, had to be substituted early in the match due to an injury. A game like this was not short of dramatics either.

Liverpool got off to a rocking start as striker Luis Suarez played a perfect through ball to his teammate Raheem Sterling, who did well to receive the ball and calmly put his strike past Manchester defender Vincent Kompany and goalkeeper Joe Hart, all of this coming in the 6th minute of play.

Within the next 20 minutes Manchester City lost their midfielder Yaya Toure to injury, who was replaced by Javi Garcia, soon enough Liverpool put a second goal past Joe Hart off of a Martin Skrtel header, who had the job of diverting the ball from the corner delivered by captain Steven Gerrard. Liverpool and Manchester headed into the locker room at halftime, with the home fans giving a great energy to the game.

The away fans had something to cheer about after halftime however. Manuel Pellegrini replaced midfielder Jesus Navas with James Milner before the second half started. Milner made his mark on the game 10 minutes later when some excellent link-up play between him and midfielder Fernandinho led to a Manchester City goal by David Silva. 2-1 Liverpool.

Nearly 5 minutes later, Manchester City silenced the home crowd yet again when the Manchester City midfield played intricately in Liverpool’s 18 yard box, which led to a shot by David Silva, which took a deflection off of Liverpool defender Glen Johnson and went past the keeper for City’s second goal of the half, bringing the score level.

It was Liverpool, however, who capitalized on a defensive error by Manchester City to get their 3rd goal courtesy of Philippe Coutinho. Off of a Liverpool throw-in, defender Vincent Kompany sliced his normally easy clearance, and the ball fell to Coutinho who sent the ball past Joe Hart with a nice one-touch finish, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Liverpool went down to 10 men late in the game when midfielder Jordan Henderson was shown a red card for a dangerous slide tackle, but it came too late to make an impact on the game.

Liverpool now control their own destiny to win the league, with a game against Chelsea FC on the horizon, Chelsea being 2 points behind the leaders Liverpool. Manchester City were sent 7 points back behind the leaders, however their 2 games in hand will be crucial for their title chase.
