Dr. Joel Iverson (Ph.D., Arizona State University) is Professor at the University of Montana in the Communication Studies Department. His research explores how organizations are enacted through communication (communicative constitution of organizations) as well as communities of practice theory in risk and crisis communication, nonprofit organizing, structuration theory and development of the Four Flows Model of organizational communication. His research is published in various communication and nonprofit journals including: Management Communication Quarterly, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, the Handbook of Organizational Communication.

Interorganizational collaboration for large-scale crises must coordinate many types of organizations, experiences and knowledge creating difficult (sticky) situations. Communities of practice theory, stories and other approaches help overcome the communicative challenges from complex trans-organizational crises.
