Brooke Liu, Ph.D., is a Professor of Communication at the University of Maryland and the Associate Dean for Academic Standards and Policies at the University of Maryland Graduate School. She currently is the editor of the Journal of International Crisis and Risk Communication Research. Her research exams how government messages, media, and interpersonal communication can motivate people to successfully respond to and recover from hazards. Liu’s research has been funded by government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Science Foundation, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

 

Advancing Crisis Communication Effectiveness: Integrating Crisis Communication and Social Media Scholarship with Practice”

Social media are dominant channels for organizations and citizens to share disaster information. Yet, there remain critical information gaps. This presentation synthesizes academic and grey literature to better integrate scholarship and practice. In doing so, the authors provide a solid foundation for advancing crisis communication effectiveness in the digital age.
