Jessica Wiitala is a Ph.D. student at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in the Rosen College of Hospitality Management. She received her MBA with a concentration in Marketing from the Keller Graduate School of Management in Pomona, California and her Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Event Management, with a minor in Business Law from Lasell College in Newton, Massachusetts. Her research interests include strategic communications, crises, and media effects in the context of the tourism and event industries. Her research has been presented at a wide spectrum of international conferences. She has worked in professional settings across the U.S. and currently teaches in the Department of Tourism, Events, and Attractions at UCF.

The consumption of media has altered much of what we do. Due in part to media selection, individuals have the opportunity to select and favor messages that align with their views. The gathering of mass-mediated information, in general, often results in greater information seeking behaviors. The connection between these two domains was the foundation of the current study.
