The Merseyside club has some silverware in their cabinet from the last 10 years, however the elusive English League title could be in sight for the team if they can manage to beat their main title competitors, Manchester City FC and Chelsea FC. These games come within 2 weeks of each other for Liverpool, and each fixture will be crucial in determining who wins this year’s title. At this point in the season with only a handful of games left to play, each team controls their own destiny in terms of winning the league.
Liverpool’s current place on top of the table is not only the result of the sensational seasons for strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, who have combined for 49 goals this season thus far, credit is owed to Manchester City who have 2 games in hand, meaning that 2 fixtures for City have yet to be played due to involvement in other competitions. If Manchester City win both these games, Liverpool’s title chase could be in jeopardy. However, next weekend, Liverpool may not have to worry about those extra games if they can beat Manchester City at Anfield this upcoming Sunday, which will be a tough task for the club.
Manchester City could gain ground on the league leaders on Sunday with a win on Sunday, and a win in both of their games in hand will seal the title for City. Their two games in hand are certainly winnable too, but are not to be taken lightly in any circumstance. This could also cast doubts as to whether Chelsea FC can make a strong last push for their pursuit of the title. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has continually cast doubt onto his side and their chances of winning the title, including recent comments that he’s “not happy with his strikers’ performances”, hinting their could be major changes in attacking options this coming off-season. Mourinho has not lost all faith in his team, as he still believes they can make a push for the title, even though his side, who will be facing Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday for their Champions League lives is the priority for now.
Although next Sunday’s matchup between contenders Manchester City and Liverpool could alone determine who could be champions of this years’ Premier League campaign, there is still plenty of football left to be played.
