Could the Twinkie name brand actually have an expiration date? Rumors have been circulating that the Hostess Brand, maker of the Twinkie, may be approaching bankruptcy. Although we have not received any direct remarks from Hostess’s Corporate Representatives, many reports have been released. The Hostess Brand is speculated to be in the red by as much as $860,000,000. Luckily, many loyal fans have come together to help prevent this brand’s demise. Talk show host Wendy Williams developed segments within her show to campaign for Twinkies in hopes of gaining public recognition of the brand’s financial status. Her segments included testimonials of her staff and audience members’ love for the Twinkie snack. Social media sites have also been buzzing about the end of the Twinkie and have shown signs of grief. In addition to this support, a commercial aired during Yesterday’s Super Bowl showcased Twinkie advertisements in various subtle and obvious ways. It is clear that many people are joining forces in support of saving the Twinkie snack but I question if these same people actually purchased the snack prior to hearing about the brand being in the red. Fortunately, our society has become more health conscience and aware of the negative effects of consuming snacks with large amount of sugar and fat. Many mothers and fathers refuse to purchase items like the Twinkie due to the fact that they have no nutritional value and that they never expire. I personally believe that snacks like the Twinkie are bad even in small amounts. For example, children or adults who partake in snacks such as the Twinkie multiple times during the week may eventually develop diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and all the other health issues associated with a high fat and sugar intake. Maybe it is a good thing that the Hostess brand is going out of business because they may have actually caused more harm than good. The Hostess company has actually been in operation since 1925 and they have developed many sweet, non-nutritious snack and food items such as Ding Dong’s, Wonder Bread, cupcakes, Suzy Q’s, Donettes, Mini Muffins, Sno balls, Fruit Pies, Zingers and Ho-Hos. Overall, it appears that Hostess fans are standing behind the brand and intend to continue to show support. It is possible that the advertising and promoting done by fans can help get Hostess Twinkies out of the red but only time will tell.
