Megan Huntsman, 39, is accused of murdering her babies after they were born between 1996 and 2006, said investigators. She was taken in to custody Sunday on six counts of murder. It was not immediately apparent if Huntsman has an lawyer or why there were only six counts of murder and not seven.
This gruesome case has caused a series of questions about how these murders occurred despite Huntsman living what neighbors said seemed like a normal life. Police refused to comment on a motive and on what was said during an interview with police.
Her estranged husband made the discovery while cleaning out the garage after recently getting out of prison. Police do not believe he was aware of the murders and he is not a person of interest at this time.
Police Capt. Michael Roberts said officers responded to a phone call from him Saturday about a dead baby, and then they found the six other bodies.
Megan Huntsman was booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of killing six of her newborn children over the past ten years.
Family and neighbors identified the separated husband as Darren West, who had been in prison on drug-related charges. Roberts said investigators believe West and Huntsman were together when the babies were born.
The infants’ bodies were sent to the Utah medical examiner’s office for tests, including one to find the cause of death. DNA samples taken from the suspect and her husband will determine whether or not the two are the parents, as the authorities believe.
