Biography

Mohan Dutta (Ph.D., University of Minnesota, 2001) is Dean’s Chair Professor and Director of the Center for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE) in the School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing at Massey University. His scholarship, embodied in the culture-centered approach (CCA) to communication, seeks to co-create communication infrastructures in solidarity with communities at the margins of the globe. Through his work at CARE, Mohan explores the communicative processes of marginalization that adversely impact the health and wellbeing of individuals, households, and communities. Partnerships with marginalized communities takes the form of advocacy and activism directed at challenging and transforming the practices of silencing and marginalization. His scholarship that is based on solidarities with Indigenous communities, minority communities, women farmers, migrant workers, sex workers, gender diverse communities, ageing communities and communities negotiating disability seeks to build communicative registers for social change. Professor Dutta is a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association (NCA) and a Fellow of the International Communication Association. He is also a recipient of the ICA 2015 Applied Communication/Public Policy Award, 2021 ICA Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award, and the 2020 Charles H. Woolbert Research Award for his scholarship on the CCA.
