Last night, Sunday November 24th, was the annual American Music Awards. Pitbull, also known as Mr. 305, hosted the ceremony, but it was the performances and winners that stole the show.
Justin Timberlake certainly returned to music in an incredibly successful way. He continues to be loved and respected by all those in the industry as the prince of pop. Timberlake took home the awards for favorite pop/rock male artist, favorite soul/R&B male artist, and favorite soul/R&B album. Every time he was on stage, he was debonair, funny and very humble, making girls swoon everywhere.
Lady Gaga and R. Kelly performed their song, “Do what U want” as Kelly impersonated the President and Gaga played Marilyn Monroe. Lady Gaga acted as Marilyn beautifully and danced on the President’s desk as he looked up, admiring her. Their relationship was leaked on Instagram and the “President” stormed out right as he was being questioned by reporters. It was a cute take on the idea that celebrities lives are rarely ever private.
Rihanna won the very first Icon award. It is the recognition that this person has been very successful in the music industry and is “the voice of our time”, said Bill Mahar when he introduced her to the stage. Rihanna’s mother presented her with the actual trophy, with a heartfelt speech about how proud she was of her 25 year old daughter.
Miley Cyrus closed the show with her performance singing “Wrecking Ball”. She was dressed in her usual crop top and high waisted bottoms that rode completely up her crotch. What surprised viewers was the huge animated cat lip singing the song behind her. There was no “twerking” at this award show, but it was still very entertaining.
