As the H1N1 virus continues to spread through Orlando and infect dozens of UCF students, staff at the UCF Health Center has teamed with Centra Care to host “Take the Shot” day. The purpose of this day is to provide adult and children with a flu shot. The goal is to beat the Guinness World Record for seasonal shots given in one day.
UCF Health Director J. Robert Wirag said, “This year, it’s especially important to get a seasonal flu shot now, and get the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available”. Flu shots will be free of charge for the first 500 adults (18+) and 500 children (17- ). Thereafter, flu shots will be given for a small charge of $10 for UCF students and $20 for all others. An additional 1,500 shots are reserved for students with financial aid.
All shots will be available inside the UCF arena on Wednesday September 30, from noon to 7pm. Getting the flu shot is especially important this year with the H1N1 flu making its way around town. The flu can cause fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. The safest bet to avoid getting influenza is to get the shot. Join me on Wednesday and be one more person protected. Don’t fall into the 20% category of people who catch the flu each year.
