Marijuana is finally legal in Colorado and you’d begin to think that the amount of headlines involving the new legislation would be overwhelming. Most of the information that was displayed was pretty much expected, mass amounts of profit with no one running down the streets reenacting “Reefer Madness”. What really caught my eye however was the new medical breakthrough involving a specific strain titled “Charlotte’s Web” that is known for providing relief among children who are suffering from seizures and epilepsy.
The strain is named after a little girl named Charlotte Figi who had a severe case of epilepsy, causing the unfortunate girl to suffer over three hundred seizures in a weeks time. The mass amount of medication and treatment that was given to her seemed practically useless, as her condition never improved. That is until Charlotte’s mother Paige discovered Josh Stanley’s miracle strain of marijuana.
The strain was actually originally named “Hippie’s Disappointment” due to the minuscule amount of THC in the strain that actually removes the psychoactive effects of marijuana. In other words, you don’t get high at all from using this strain. Rather than THC, the strain is high in what’s called cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD is known to treat seizures, and after turning the Charlotte’s Web strain into an oil, Charlotte’s seizures dramatically lowered in number going from multiple a day to just one or two that last a few seconds each.
Medical Marijuana has had research done on it for decades and yet new discoveries are made on a daily basis. The new strain has brought hope to countless families across the United States, and many parents have decided to move their entire lives to Colorado just to hopefully find a cure for their children. Never in my life would I have ever thought a form of marijuana would be able to affect children’s lives so much in a positive way. The worlds views on the little plant has come a far way, and hopefully it will be viewed as much more than just a hippy plant to make you feel good. With hemp being a very viable resource for many needs across the world, Colorado and Washington won’t be alone for too long in the war on drugs.
