It seems that every year there are only three things in the world that are completely inevitable. Death, taxes, and the San Antonio Spurs winning 50 games in a season. Although I spent most of my life growing up in South Florida being a Miami Heat fan, I can’t help but have the utmost respect over our last year playoff rivals. Miami took the gold home last year, however the thirst for revenge is extremely apparent in the Spurs playing style this season.
Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan, and the Spurs have extended their streak of winning at least 50 games in a season for the 13th consecutive season, surpassing the LA Lakers for the longest streak in NBA history. In addition to this success, Coach Pop and the Spurs have the best winning percentage over any 15-year span in NBA history since the 1997-98 season. They also have the best record in the four major professional sports (NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL) during this time period.
I almost feel like the Spurs, the most fundamentally correct team in the league, seem to be completely overlooked compared to other big-shot teams due to the lack of flashiness. Because they would rather rely on pure strategy and fundamentals over having one or two over the top, extremely talented players such as Kevin Durant or Kobe Bryant, they never achieve the level of recognition they really need. So this one goes out to Greg Popovich and his extremely talented set of athletic masterminds. Playoff season can’t get any more exciting.
