UCF Homecoming Comes to an End

Classes began at UCF in 1968 and in 1971 UCF held its first Homecoming to coincide with the basketball season which was, at the time, the university’s first varsity sport. In 1980, there were two Homecomings held: one in the spring to coincide with the basketball season and one in the fall to coincide with the football season. In 1971 the first “skit knight” was held, then referred to as “Nite of Knights”.

1975 saw the first homecoming parade. In 1992, the parade was moved downtown, where it remained until 2007 when it moved back to campus with the opening of UCF’s first on campus football stadium.

Homecoming has been a tradition at UCF since its earliest years. It has become a staple of fall programming at the University.

Many students, student organizations, university departments, even off campus businesses plan their fall calendars around this week of events. Traditionally, Homecoming is an opportunity for Alumni to revisit and reconnect with their Alma Mater.

However, at UCF it is equally important to current students. It is a time for students to exhibit their pride in their school, putting aside other affiliations and raising morale and spirit. Go Knights!

This past homecoming week UCF was home to Damon Wayans Jr. from New Girl and other various comedies and Jimmy Tatro, a YouTube sensation. UCF also had one of its biggest ‘Concert Knights’ with Big Sean performing for over 4,000 students.

Not only did UCF have great concert and comedy nights, they also have an array of events that any student can get involved in such as, coin wars, fireworks, and movie night.

Last but not least, to really end the week on a great note- UCF Homecoming puts on Spirit Splash.

Spirit Splash was awarded Best Campus Tradition 2011 by the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA), Spirit Splash is the Nation’s greatest pep rally. Students came in their swim suits and run into the UCF Reflection pond to get ready for the big homecoming game Saturday.

Overall, UCF put on a great Homecoming week and I hope next year more people come out!
