Many people take multivitamin supplements and consume drink mixes that contain high vitamin content. The fact of the matter is that the human body cannot process all of these vitamins and most of these extra vitamins are excreted from the body. The body is able to take the vitamins and nutrients it needs from a balanced diet, which usually contains Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. There is one vitamin the body cannot get from many foods and is beneficial to get in supplement form. That vitamin is Vitamin D.
Vitamin D comes in two variations- D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 comes from supplements and certain foods while Vitamin D3 comes from the sun. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps to build up strength in our bones. The body also uses it for muscle movement and to help the immune system fight infections. It has been found in multiple studies that individuals who take Vitamin D supplements have a longer life span than those who do not. It is also vital that women take Vitamin D supplements because it helps to prevent osteoporosis, a bone disease more common in women.
As mentioned earlier, Vitamin D is not found in a lot of foods which is why it is important to add the supplement to your diet. In addition to taking a vitamin supplement, sun exposure helps the human body produce Vitamin D. A few foods that contain Vitamin D include: salmon, tuna, egg yolks, cheese, and beef liver (the latter three only contain a small amount of Vitamin D). There is also Vitamin D in milk, which has 25% of the daily value, cereal, and orange juice.
