My generation (born 1990) is the generation that grew up with the digital age. We learned how to operate electronics at a young age and keep up with the ever transforming cycle of gadgets. As technology gets cooler and sleeker, we have forgotten the specs of such inventions that allow us to enjoy them. A much appreciative and wary older generation pays attention to detail more than my own. I feel that this is because we have become increasingly superficial. We trust that the product will work so we do not give question to any of the technical specifications of said gadget. We are concerned with the way it looks and how fast it is so that Facebook or YouTube can load as fast as possible.
My generation is taking the construction of a product for granted. We do not appreciate what makes our gadgets tick. If we were asked what the pixel density, processor, GSM, or UMTS, 97% of people would not know the answer. Mainly because we would not even know what those things are. I have been with friends as they purchased a new cell phone. They go to the most attractive one or the best brand and then when an employee goes over the specs of the phone, my friend would be starring at them just waiting for them to hurry up so they could get home and post a status about getting a cool new phone.
I am not at all surprised that the generation that grew up on technology is not very tech savvy at all. The need for information is not above the lure of aesthetic competition.
