The Trend of Profiting from Death

As I was watching one of the cable news channels, I began to see sneak peeks of advertisements scheduled to air during the Super Bowl. One in particular was a Budweiser commercial targeted at the military audience. The ad ran like this: A man is finally arriving home after a tour of duty in some foreign country, lets say Afghanistan just for shits and giggles. This man doesn’t know it yet but his wife has planned a giant surprise homecoming for him with the help of none other than Budweiser. Budweiser, as kindhearted as they are, decide to throw mister military man a big parade and invite all of the town’s people to cheer him on as he rides down the street in a buggy being pulled by a group of, you guessed it, Budweiser Clydesdales.

Now how does this example of a patriotic commercial wreak of profiting from death? Simple. Without the known psychological affect of death and the possibility of actually losing your loved one overseas, the impact of those soldiers coming home do not hold such a high emotional state of intensity. Basically what I am saying is, if you knew your loved one was coming home after a tour of duty, you would think of it as the “norm.” You wouldn’t think twice about it. Sure, we subconsciously have the everyday thought of “will I see him or her again,” or “could today be my last day,” and that is why we always give a hug and kiss and say I love you before we leave. But when that regular ole’ day is over and your loved one comes home from work or school, do you throw a parade everyday like it’s a miracle he or she survived? No. Some of you smart asses might say yes, and hey that is awesome, but the majority of people in today’s society would say no. So with your heightened emotions, Budweiser is pulling on your heart strings. But guess what, they are not the only ones.

Another example of this is the 9/11 memorial museum and Freedom Tower. Did you know that you are going to be charged $20 to go inside of Freedom Tower when it opens this spring? Not only there, but you have to pay to go inside the 9/11 museum. For what? To see all the horrors that remind us of what happened that day? So that begs to question, if over 2,000 people didn’t die in such a horrific national tragedy, would you want to pay to see this? The city of New York is capitalizing off of how those 2,000 plus deaths affected essentially millions of people. Just the families alone of the deceased would at least bring you 20,000 plus in traffic to the museum. Think about it, one person who died that day has at least 10 family members both immediate and extended. And it is now 12 years later and you have daughters and sons who have married and had kids of their own. Don’t get me wrong, I think building the monuments were a great thing to do, but charging people to see the rubble that was left over is despicable.

What happened to our morals as a country or should I ask what happened to our intelligence as a people? We are fed this crap everyday, subliminally and intentionally, and either way we seem to just eat it up. Think! What makes someone a hero? Because joining the military does not make you a hero, and not everybody needs a parade. The psychology of this is deeper than what little bit I described above. Stop putting forth such little effort to gain instant pleasure, and “feeling good” about yourselves. Sure, you can wave a flag on a busy street and hold a sign saying you support our troops, but for what? Is that the American spirit? Because if it is, these corporations are capitalizing big time, and we are all fools for following the trend of coloring fancy words on a paper sign. Seeing your loved ones name etched into a monument is a nice gesture, but the memories lie within you. Is it okay to let your city build a new building to house offices? Sure, we have to move on as a people. But is it okay to let them charge you to be reminded of the tragedy? I say no. It’s almost like we live outside of reality when we look at bent steel and say “whoa!” But to the people who went through 9/11 or the people who lost loved ones in a war, it’s real.

Extreme Dieting: The Dangers of Tapeworms

Dieting and weight loss fads are forever changing. Some become more popular while others wane with time. Dieting has come a long way from cutting out a certain food group. People are going to extreme dieting measures to get the results they desire.

Dieters are becoming more radical with dieting and their weight loss techniques. Tapeworms are now for sale on the Internet to help with weight loss. Tapeworm pills containing the parasite are swallowed allowing the worm to survive within one’s stomach and feed off of the food in its host’s body.

Tapeworms are a parasite that can be contracted by eating raw or undercooked meat. They thrive off their host and can cause nausea, diarrhea, blindness, or even death. Some tapeworms grow to be 50 feet long and can live for 20 years.

Michael Mosley, a British doctor and journalist, ingested tapeworms to study the effect they have on humans. The spectacle is being documented for a television show called “Infested! Living With Parasites”. Mosley’s wife, a doctor, was not very happy about her husband voluntarily consuming tapeworms.

Mosley removed a cyst from a cow’s tongue, which contained tapeworm eggs, and swallowed the cyst. He traveled to Kenya to obtain the worms because that would not be permitted in the United States. Shortly after, he swallowed a camera to keep track of the critters thriving in his stomach.

Mosley kept track of what he ate for a six-week period and noticed changes within his diet. He observed that he was eating more carbohydrates and contrary to what people believe about tapeworms, he actually gained two pounds instead of losing weight.

It is bizarre that people will go to such extreme measure for weight loss. Assuming this fad fades as well, what will be the “next big” dieting trick?

Protests in the Ukraine are Being Kept From Mainstream Media

Over the past couple of weeks Ukraine has been experiencing protests that are reminiscent of the Occupy London movement. The protests have been equally as violent and the scenes in Kiev look like something out of the Book of Revelation.  While the government has been attempting to stand its ground, they’ve failed to appease the protesters by granting the Prime Minister position to opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the repealing of anti-protest laws. For several days I heard about these protests through social media sites, but heard of nothing about them through mainstream media. It wasn’t until I did some research before I understood the true nature of the protests. I had an inkling that it had something to do with corrupt leaders, as all “revolutions” tend to be attributed to, so in no way was I surprised to find this to be true in Ukraine’s case. President Yanukovych has allegedly faced two convictions, both of which dealt with violent crimes. These previous violent acts come as no surprise to me as three protesters have died in the process, one by torture.

With a country on the verge of civil war, I think the most appalling part is that, as stated before, I had to find out through social media. Certainly, these news sources cannot always be trusted, but if I can’t hear about things like this on the news then I have to find some way to hear about what’s going on in the world. I think it’s frightening that people have to actively seek out news of utmost importance. With the Occupy Movement of 2011 spreading through Facebook, it’s come to the point that people have no other choice than to wait for something serious to show up on a newsfeed or, as luck would have it, the twitter page of human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, which is where I first heard about this grave situation. The fact that news of such severity is not readily available to everyone is alarming and this needs to be changed.

Ramona Singer is Signing Papers to Divorce Her Longtime Husband

The world wide popular show of The Real Housewives of New York is set to premiere sometime in March on the Bravo Network. However, there is already some buzz surrounding one of the housewives, Ramona Singer. She has been on the show since its inception, and as a Veteran she is all too used to the devastating effects this reality show can have on personal lives.

Ramona Singer is apparently going to file for divorce from her longtime husband, Mario Singer, of twenty-seven years.  She reportedly called the police about domestic abuse with her husband at her home in the Southampton. There are rumors that the result of the divorce and arguments revolves around Mario’s infidelity. There is speculation that he has been having an affair with his younger female assistant.

This example of cheating is especially interesting because a couple of seasons ago, the group of housewives encountered a psychic. The psychic gave Ramona a disturbing read. The psychic tried to warn Ramona that her husband was having an affair with another woman. Ramona feigned indifference, but as a viewer, anyone could tell the message was troubling her.

Perhaps, there is a silver lining to Ramona’s plight. Although, her love life may be in jeopardy, it does create an intriguing story line for her. That may seem cold, but in a corporate world where ratings and image are everything, she could very easily garner some sympathy as a grieving divorcee and increase the ratings for her show.  In any case, Ramona is a survivor and a truly generous and business savvy person. As how it will affect her daughter and the housewives, everyone will just have to stay tuned.

Amanda Knox found Guilty again by Italian Court

This past Thursday, January 30, Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was convicted on murder charges by an Italian Appeals Court in Florence for the murder of Meredith Kercher, a British exchange student, back in 2007. The couple was originally convicted on murder charges in 2009 but that decision was appealed and overturned in 2011. In addition to the murder charges, Amanda Knox was also convicted of slander which lengthened her sentence to 28 1/2 years in prison while Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years.

In 2007, Meredith Kercher was found in a pool of blood, partially covered by a duvet in a house shared with Knox in Perugia, Italy. Kercher’s throat was slit and her bedroom door was locked in addition to her window being broken. In 2009 Prosecutors initially speculated that Sollecito, Knox, and Kercher were involved in a sex game that had gone wrong and have since suspected that a heated argument over cleanliness led to her murder in their Perugia apartment.

Once the Presiding Judge Alessandro Nencini submits his arguments about the jury’s ruling, Knox’s attorney Ted Simon said that he will most likely submit an appeal in lieu of the judge’s arguments. Simon urges that if an extradition warrant is issued in order to serve the new sentence is suggested, the United States is likely to deny it because of double jeopardy. U.S. Laws prevent people from being tried on the same charge.

Despite the court’s decision, Knox said she will not return to Italy to serve the new sentence. She admits that she is afraid to return to Italy after what she experienced during her previous four year sentence. “I will become … a fugitive,” she told Italian daily La Repubblica this month, when asked what she would do if she was found guilty in the second trial.

Artistic Integrity in Video Games: Or Lack There of

Video Games are a multi-billion dollar industry and it continues to grow. The publishers own the developers of these games. The publishers are concerned with marketing and come up with release dates and marketing stratagems, while the developers are the ones who are the artistic and technical minds behind the projects. They come up with the story and how it will unfold. They need the publishers to provide funds and to sell their game once it is released.

The problem comes in when the publishers withhold funds and push asinine deadlines. This conflict is pertinent with the release of Mass Effect 3. Bioware, developed the previous two games with three years apart, giving them time integrate the previous game into the second. This was something that was never attempted before. To make a trilogy that took all the decisions into account in the previous was something thought as impossible before. However, with the commercial success of Mass Effect 1 and 2, the publisher Electronic Arts (EA), pulled the deadline from three years to just two.

Bioware, having no choice, rushed the development of the game, and in the process, disappointed their fans by failing to properly integrate the previous games properly, relegating previous decisions to a simple point/bar graph, having little impact except the ending cutscene. The developer originally touted the game in many press conferences as having many unique endings and consequences for each decision, but was cut to just three in the final build.

EA and Bioware received many complaints for their ending, and due to the pressure, changed it with downloadable content. What is really interesting is that before they released the final patch, they said the ending was what they originally intended. Of course, this is not true because of the release of the patch due to external pressure.

While games are a business, people, such myself, used to believe in the integrity of developers and they would do their very best to achieve what they set out to do. However, publishers are only concerned about their quarterly reports, which ruins whatever ideas the developers had beforehand. All it does is leave its consumers delusioned with the publishers with very little alternative than just to stop playing.

Friday, January 31 is the first day of Chinese New Year 2014, Year of the Horse!

Friday, January 31 is the first day of Chinese New Year 2014, Year of the Horse!

Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name. Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally run from Chinese New Year’s Eve, the last day of the last month of the Chinese calendar, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month, making the festival the longest in the Chinese calendar. Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, the Chinese New Year is often referred to as the “Lunar New Year”.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, and also in Chinatowns elsewhere. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar New Year celebrations of its geographic neighbors.  A multi-day celebration marked by money-stuffed red envelopes, dragon imagery and, in the Southland, a flood of tourists from Asia.

The first day of Chinese New Year is different every year, and there are twelve kinds of animal around each year. The horse is part of a 12-year-cycle of animals that make up the Chinese zodiac. These interact with the five elements: wood, metal, fire, water, earth. 2014 is the year of the wood horse, taking over from the year of the water snake.

The animal signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Can Durant be the best scorer ever?

Oklahoma City Small Forward Kevin Durant has been an outstanding player since entering the league in 2007. Durant is most known for his shoulder shimmy at the free throw line. He’s always smiling and is does his best each and everyday to be a great role model for younger kids. However, Kevin Durant has been carrying this team on his shoulders due to the injury of All-Star Point Guard Russell Westbrook. The Oklahoma City Thunder are 14-5 since losing Westbrook. Thanks to the All-Star Small Forward, he’s been putting on shows for Oklahoma City fans and the world. Kevin Durant and the Thunder defeated the Miami Heat Wednesday Night at the American Airlines Arena in which Durant had 33 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Durant has now extended the streak to 12 games to where he has scored at least 30 points or more. It is the longest streak in the NBA since Tracy McGrady had a 14 game one back in the 2002-2003 season. According to ESPN.com, in just six NBA seasons, Kevin Durant has scored 13,699 points in his career. Durant averages 31.3 points a game, and at the level that he’s playing at right now, he certainly has the chance to be the best scorer ever with his skill set. But, we all have to remember, he’s not in it just to put up numbers. From here on out and for the rest of his NBA career, it’ll depend on if he can prevent himself from having a serious injury. Everyone who watches NBA basketball knows how dangerous Kevin Durant is when he has the ball in his hands. He can knock down baskets down from anywhere on the floor.

NBA: Phoenix Suns Are Shining Bright

The Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is full of exceptional talent this season, with 11 teams holding records at or above .500.  One of those teams, often overlooked,  is turning out to be the league’s biggest surprise of the year—the young squad of the Phoenix Suns.  This franchise, which only won 25 games throughout last season, has boasted a 28-18 record and are currently ranked sixth in the West.  Jeff Hornacek, the Phoenix head coach, has done an outstanding job with turning this team around.

Throughout this 2013-14 season, the Phoenix Suns have strived to prove who they are, and what they are capable of.  They took a large step towards that on January 22, 2014, as the Indiana Pacers came to town.  To everyone’s surprise, the Suns destroyed the Pacers 124-100.  With the best record in the league at the time, Indiana dropped to 33-8 as they were stunned by the fast-break, explosive play by Phoenix.

On January 30, 2014, Hornacek’s squad did it again—this time, on the road.  Indiana holds the best home court record in the NBA at 21-1.  However, after the Suns paid their visit to Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Pacers fell to 21-2 at home, and 35-10 overall as they couldn’t take the lead all night.  The Suns shone the whole time and took the game 102-94.

While this team includes a lot of talent, the duo of Goran Dragic and Gerald Green run most of the show.  Dragic leads the team with 19.7 Points Per Game (PPG) and 6.1 Assists Per Game (APG), while Green puts up 14.1 PPG and 1.6 APG.  These two have helped Phoenix make its big statement by sweeping their regular-season series with Indiana, thus proving the Suns will be a legitimate playoff contender in the Western Conference.
