The Issue With the 24-Hour News Cycle and Confirmation Bias

This past week, a story came out about a 14-year-old student who murdered his math teacher at his high school after she asked him to stay after school for detention.  The boy allegedly followed her into the bathroom, killed her, and then hid her body in a trash can that he wheeled out into the woods.  This is obviously an incredibly tragic event.  The reaction among the public has mirrored the fact that this is an incredibly tragic event, as the story has brought about comments of “What is the world coming to?” and “What is wrong with people these days?” that all tragic events seem to bring.  Not only do I feel these comments tend to undermine the respect that should be given to the victim’s family, but I also think they come from a flawed point-of-view.

The answer to “what is wrong with people these days?” is likely, “the same thing that’s always been wrong with people”.  Crimes like these are committed for any number of reasons, from mental illness to extreme emotional outbursts.  The fact of the matter is, there’s no consistent trend indicating that these terrible crimes are happening any more often than they have in the past; in fact, there’s a number of statistics in many major cities that indicate violent crimes have been trending down over the past few decades.  The perception that there’s a flurry of such incidents comes entirely from the 24-hour news cycle, and the ever-increasing amount of technology in our lives.  Hearing about such tragic news events throughout the day and having them analyzed to the most minute detail leads to the idea that these crimes happen more often than they actually do.  There’s also the fact that negative news stories tend to “sell” much more than positive news stories for that very reason.  The negative news stories invoke a more extreme emotional reaction from the viewer than positive news stories do, and thus networks and news outlets are going to spend more time talking about such things.

That said, just because violent crimes trend down doesn’t mean society shouldn’t always be looking for more ways to curb such things happening.  There is value to be gleaned from discussion about what causes people to do these things.  The tragedy of what happened to the victim in this crime should just never be lost in such discussions as another one of the minute details of the story.

Top Two Teams Match Up in World Series

This past week, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox met in the World Series of Major League Baseball. Not only are these games the final 4-7 games of the 2013 regular season, but these two teams are truly the best two teams of the entire league. The St. Louis Cardinals were the number one team with the best record in the National League and the Boston Red Sox also had the best record in the American League. The last time a meeting in the World Series between the top two teams would be back in 1996 between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees.

After four games of play, the series is tied 2 games to 2 games. There has been two games so far in Boston and two games in St. Louis. There will be three games left if needed, however the series is a best of seven games.

For Major League Baseball the meeting of these two teams in the fall classic couldn’t be better. The Cardinals and the Red Sox are both very large television markets with enormous fan bases. The playoffs have been filled with teams from huge markets like Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles. The league when it comes down to the base is a business and seeing teams that come from huge money making teams is very appealing.

Whomever wins this championship will be a true winner based off of how each of these teams played in the regular season and there should not be any argument.

45 Year Old Colombian Mother Arrested After Selling The Virginity Of 12 Daughters To Old Men

Earlier this week a 45 year old Colombian mother of 14 by the name of Margarita de Jesus Zapata Moreno was arrested after police found out she was essentially prostituting her daughters at a young age. The Bogota Metropolitan police say Zapata “sold the virginity of 12 daughters to much older men seeking to have sex with young virgins.” Authorities have also said that as soon as her daughters hit the age of 12, Zapata would begin selling them to men and charged anywhere from $160 to $212. Information of this abuse was brought to Colombian police by one of Zapata’s daughters who stepped forward and described to officers the “hell in which she lived when she was still a prepubescent girl, and about a life of abuse and neglect.” Although the young girl was brave enough to inform authorities of such an unfortunate situation, it took the investigation more than a year to complete because the girl feared her mother would kill her for going to the police.  After disappearing for a year, the young girl did not return with more information until the age of 16, and it was then that she told of a man who impregnated her and how she gave birth to a baby at only 14 years of age, despite her mother’s constant insistence to get an abortion. The man 51 year old man who is believed to have fathered the baby refused to comment on the situation, but has since then been arrested. Police are begging for other daughters whose virginity’s were sold for money to come forward with more information about their situation in order to build more evidence about this case. This might be challenging however because quite a few of Zapata’s daughters are missing. When confronted about this incident by news reporters and asked if she was indeed prostituting her daughters, Zapata simply replied “No, my darling.”

This is truly an unfortunate situation as a child should be allowed to remain innocent for as long as possible. Giving up one’s virginity should be a personal choice, and should never be forcefully taken from someone no matter how much money someone stands to gain from it. I sincerely hope that in the future (specifically sooner than later) that more of Zapata’s daughters will be brave enough to come forward as well and help put an end to things like this from occurring to other young girls.

Barcelona Edges Real Madrid 2-1 in the 1st El Classico of the Season

Barcelona beat their arch rivals Real Madrid 2-1 in what is soccer’s biggest rivalry. This match up is always fun to watch. You have the two best players in the world facing off against each with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. With Neymar signing with Barcelona, Madrid countered that with a huge signing with Gareth Bale. These match ups between the players and the two teams set up for the most exciting and controversial ninety minutes in football.

Neymar was the first to make some noise in the game with a goal in nineteenth minute. Iniesta assisted Neymar whose shot took a small deflection to help it go into the back of the net. Neymar had a better performance in his first El Classico compared to the other first time participant in Bale. Bale lacked the ability to get anything going. He wasn’t creating any pressure with no shots on goal. His ability to create space was taken away by Barcelona’s defense. Bale was taken out of the game in the sixty first minute. Bale has been plagued by injuries all season, but he needed to step up in this game. Neymar made his presence felt. He took great shots on target and opened up the field with his skillful touches.

Ronaldo was furious in this game. His best shot was saved by Victor Valdes. Ronaldo was taken down in the box in what looked to be called for a penalty, but the ref let play go on. Ronaldo was heated because he was clearly fouled. Then minutes after the no call, Pedro had an amazing chip goal from outside the 18 yard box in the seventy eighth minute. Cristiano started throwing a tirade after this goal. Jese Rodriguez grabbed a goal in the winding minutes. It didn’t matter as the whistle was blown.

This win gave Barcelona a little breathing room from Real Madrid, but the surprise of the season Atletico Madrid stays right behind Barcelona by one point. Real has been playing very well this season, but if you want to compete for the league title, you need to gain points on the top teams. Real Madrid has now lost the two games they have played against the two teams above them in the standings. El Classico always sets up for a dramatic event, and this one did not fail.

Staying Focused in this Attention Deficit World

Everyday, we are bombarded with an endless menagerie of advertisers, politicians and opinion that each fight for one fleeting second of our attention. This onslaught of information starts at the morning coffee and continues until the mind drifts off into the pleasantries of dream world. It’s actually quite surprising to even think how we are able to focus on anything for more than 30 seconds.

I’ve recently read an article that posits our national attention deficit to be a product of the way we are presented information in the online format.  For example, when reading an article online, you have to balance your attention between the ads in the right column and the “other stories you may be interested ins” on the left. Our eyes seldom follow the standard direction and cadence a traditional newspaper once demanded. In complete contrast, we jump around the webpage, reading a sentence here, another phrase there, until we gather enough information to satisfy us into saying “there, I get the gist.”

The only way I’ve found to combat this input overload is to print out and read, on a hard-copy, things I need to seriously digest. I mean, the only distraction at that point is the phone ringing in your lap, the TV squawking in the background and the emails that keep ringing in on your laptop in the other room. Well…at least it’s a start.

The Boston Red Sox Refuse to Shave

If you’re a baseball fan, or really any sports fan at all, you most likely have a few superstitions and rituals of your own. Some players refuse to wash hats, helmets, or uniforms during a winning streak. Other players, like the Boston Red Sox, are currently on a “no shaving” streak.

Ask anyone why the Boston Red Sox were unable to win The World Series for 86 years and you will receive the same answer; The Curse of the Bambino. The curse began when the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919. Prior, the Red Sox were one of the most successful professional baseball teams, winning the first World Series followed by five more titles. Years after the trade, the Yankees were the dominant team, hence the curse and the rivalry that is still present today.

This current beard-craze was not intended for the World Series. It began last March when catcher David Ross showed up scruffy to spring training. Teammates joined in and the beards became a way for them to bond as a team, compete to see who can grow the longest beard, etc. Now with potential to win the World Series not one single player will shave his beard. These beards have even taken on nicknames of their own as they evolve in shape and size.

Only the outcome of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals will determine if the players will be shaving with joy or sorrow.

Mindy Kaling Is My Inspiration

Two years ago I was watching Chelsea Lately and one of the guests was somebody by the name of Mindy Kaling. I have heard the name before, but didn’t think much of her until the interview began.

The first thing I noticed about Ms. Kaling is that she doesn’t fit into the normal Hollywood stereotype. In other words, she is not a size 00 and she doesn’t have bleach blonde hair. The next thing I noticed was the fact that this woman is hilarious. At the time, she was promoting her book Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me (and other concerns)?; which coincidentally described my life at the time.

Like a flip of a switch, I suddenly became very interested in Kaling’s work, which at the time was just being a writer and actress for The Office. Like a true 21st century kid who wants to appreciate somebody’s work, I binge watched The Office on Netflix and read Kaling’s book (six times).

When it was announced Kaling was leaving The Office for her new show, which she not only created but also wrote and starred in, I couldn’t help but be extremely excited for not just her but me. Even though the premise of the show is nowhere close to my life (Kaling’s character is an OBGYN in New York City), there is something about the writing for the show that makes it so relatable. What I love about Kaling’s writing is that her characters have flaws and those flaws end up in comedic situations, nonetheless they have flaws.

I think it’s important for broadcast journalism majors to have someone in the industry that they admire and look up to. Obviously the point is not to be them, but look at them for a source of inspiration or influence. For me, Mindy Kaling acts as that source of inspiration.

So thank you Mindy Kaling, for being a great source of inspiration for me.

New world trade center tower getting criticism

As plans and construction for the new World Trade Center progress, harsh criticisms are being made towards New York City’s efforts to replace the twin towers.

British street artist, Banksy wrote a blog last week criticizing the build that has been gaining some attention. “That building is a disaster,” he writes, “the attacks of September 11th were an attack on all of us and we will live out our lives in their shadow… but it’s also how we react to adversity that defines us. And the response? 104 floors of compromise.”

Banksy first submitted this opinion column to the New York Times, only to be denied, but ironically gaining perhaps more attention by publishing it on his own website.

The new One World Trade Center is planned to stand at 1,776 feet tall making it “the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere,”

Banksy calls this new skyscraper a “betrayal of everyone who lost their lives on September 11th because it so clearly proclaims the terrorists won. Those 10 men have condemned us to live in a world more mediocre than the one they attacked…”

Although I’m sure there are many with mixed emotions about this new tower being built, I am positive that there are many others who are on the very opposite of the spectrum—who believe that we should fight to rebuild the things that were stolen from us and that this new building is in fact a memorial of that ideal.

The 104-story One World Trade Center skyscraper is on schedule to be completed in May of next year.

Arcade Fire’s New Album Reflektor Garners Acclaim and Attention

Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire’s fourth studio album Reflektor shows how the band is still able to evolve and develop their sound following their grammy award winning album The Suburbs (2011) and their critically acclaimed debut Funeral (2004).

On October 23 physical copies of Reflektor shipped to record stores across the world and unsurprisingly the album leaked onto the Internet the very same day. It was alleged that Rollercoaster Records in Kilkenny, Ireland began selling the record as soon as copies arrived (nearly a week ahead of the October 29 release date). In response Arcade Fire made a full stream of the album available on YouTube, many other music services and publications followed the trend and by the weekend the album was easy to find.

Arcade Fire had been hyping the release of Reflektor for months with a guerilla advertising campaign in cities across North America, a performance on Saturday Night Live, and several promos and music videos. Anticipation for this album was high, particularly considering the previous album The Suburbs had won album of the year at the Grammy’s and Juno Awards. Reviews have been skewed because of a preconceived notion that this album was going to be the band’s masterpiece. Because Reflektor presents a more experimental and dance toned sound compared to Arcade Fire’s previous combination of unexpected instrumentation and emotional vocal styling and lyricism many people weren’t sure whether to love the change based on expectations of greatness or to reject it as an abject failure.

Reflektor is based off of a stretch of time that the band spent in the island-nation of Haiti and thus it blends tones and instrumentation of the Caribbean with the bands indie rock sound. James Murphy, formally of defunct LCD Soundsystem, produced the album and blended his style of longer rhythmic tracks into the 75-minute album.

The album will be available in record stores tomorrow, October 29.

Oden and Beasley Have A Fresh Start In Miami

The Miami Heat will begin their quest for a third straight championship tomorrow night against the Chicago Bulls. Miami will be receiving their championship rings before the game. They will also be wearing custom championship jerseys with gold trim. The game against the Bulls will be a tough task because Derrick Rose is finally making his return for Chicago. Rose suffered a torn ACL two years ago, and decided to sit out all of last season to recover. Miami are the favorites to win the championship this year, and they added two new players that could help them achieve their goals.

Greg Oden is one of their new additions this year. Oden was the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Portland Trailblazers. He was supposed to be the franchise centerpiece for the Blazers, but after 3 knee surgeries Oden hasn’t played a game since 2009. Miami plans on working Oden into the rotation very slowly and monitor his progress throughout the season. Oden will most likely sit the bench most of the regular season, but when the playoffs come around, Oden could be an important piece to the Miami Heat’s championship run.

Another addition to the Miami Heat this offseason is Michael Beasley. Michael Beasley was the second overall pick by the Heat in 2008. Beasley has consistently had drug problems, so he has jumped from team to team over the past couple of years. After stints with Phoenix and Minnesota, Beasley finds himself back in Miami with the Heat. If Beasley can get his act together, he may be able to contribute a lot off the bench for Miami.
