On This Day, October 16th

My daily routine: Wake up, check messages, check twitter, grumble about being awake, then finally get up. Recently I added another section to my routine and that’s learning about that days date in history. I just so happen to follow someone on twitter who re-tweets historical events of that particular day and my day doesn’t seem to truly start until I can avoid getting out of bed by reading some really interesting facts about the day so I thought I’d share with you all.

So on this day October 16th, Queen Marie Antoinette was beheaded in 1793, the first luxurious hotel in America, The Tremont Hotel in Boston Massachusetts opened its doors with a dollar-a-plate dinner. Things that seem standard in hotels today like private bedrooms with locks, complimentary soaps, indoor toilets, menus, room clerks, and bellboys made their first appearance EVER. Also, anesthesia was given its first public demonstration and the first American objects were launched into space; two aluminum pellets.

Astonishing Asteroid Gives Evidence to Other Habitable Planets.

An extraordinary astronomical occurrence has left many in the scientific field astounded after an asteroid’s remains were discovered which closely resemble the Earth’s habitable qualities. The discovery of the asteroid’s shattered remnants, which were found circling a white dwarf star called GD 61, came about aboard NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

The asteroid’s remains prove to be so remarkable due to the fact that they harbor two essential elements for a planet to be considered habitable: it had an immensely rocky exterior and it contained a large amount of water. In conjunction, these two qualities form the basis of what makes any planet capable of supporting life. This terrific find has many scientists amazed, especially since this is the first time that such a thing has been recorded. Astronomers revealed that such an event gives evidence to the fact that the GD 61 dwarf star, as well as its surrounding planetary system, could have once contained extrasolar planets identical to that of planet Earth.

Undoubtedly, this wondrous find will prove to be a major advancement in what is known about the vast universe and its contents. Being that the Earth originally received its water supply from an asteroid similar to the one found orbiting GD 61, the remnants are evidence to the fact that a similar event could have occurred that would have created a terrestrial planet in that very system. Of course, this would have been millions of years ago but it is still an incredibly profound and significant possibility.

Kardashian Fashion during Paris Fashion Week!

The most popular Kardashian sister, Kim, is no stranger to fabulous fashion. Since the birth of baby Nori, Kim has undergone a complete makeover. The most obvious change has been her new hair. The Kardashians are well known for their long dark brown locks. However, celebrity hair stylist, George Papanikolas, cut and dyed Kim’s hair blonde! Now that was a shocker for us all.

To go along with her new do, Kim is also rocking a whole new wardrobe. The Fashionista is now opting for lighter colors and less makeup. During her trip to Paris Fashion Week, Kim was specifically fond of long coats. She wore a long, caramel colored coat and a long, pink colored coat. She paired them with nude dresses, white tops and pants and denim.

A couple of nights she chose bolder styles that had everyone talking. On her last night in Paris, Kim wore a black Givenchy dress with a plunging neckline and several triangular cutouts near her waist. She paired the dress with dark plum lipstick and black heels.

Without a doubt, Kim has made losing weight after baby look easy.

CAB With truthLIVE Bring OneRepublic To UCF Campus

The nation’s largest youth smoking prevention campaign, truth, came to the University of Central Florida for the first time Friday, October 11, 2013. The truthLIVE team has been traveling the country all summer with a crew of enthusiastic “tour riders” who entertain and educate young people about the “truths” of tobacco companies and smoking. The truthLIVE five-college campus music tour was their final outreach effort this year, with UCF as their final stop. Free to students with a UCF ID, Campus Activities Board and truthLIVE teamed up to bring a concert with international icon OneRepublic and alternative pop band TeamMate at the CFE Arena in an effort to create awareness of the dangers of tobacco usage.

The truth campaign was launched in 2000 by Legacy, a national public health foundation that helps prevent youth from smoking and helps all smokers quit. The campaign exposes the tactics of the tobacco industry, the truth about addiction, and the health effects and social costs of smoking. According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the truth campaign was directly responsible for keeping 450,000 teens from starting to smoke during its first four years (2000-2004).

While I was thrilled to have the opportunity for a sit down interview with TeamMate and meet-and-greets with OneRepublic for my news coverage, my journalistic focus was still on the passionate crew and bigger message of the campaign. In addition to the evening concert, truthLIVE “activated” on campus throughout the day with a mobile dance party and free gear giveaways, featuring gear with tobacco-related facts printed. The orange “truth truck” opened up with a DJ booth, dance floor and lounge area. The “truth zone” offered non-preachy activities. 14.3 percent of youth in Florida smoke, and I love that young people are making a difference to help save lives.

Schizophrenia Diagnosis Causes Master Chef Contestant Josh Marks to Commit Suicide

Master Chef’s own, Josh Marks was found dead in an alley near his home Friday night, with the cause of death being suicide. Josh at 7’2 was described by family and friends as a “gentle sweet soul” who “loved life and loved people.” Known by many as the “gentle giant”, Josh had great potential and showed signs of becoming a very successful chef, which was evident by him being Master Chef’s runner up on his particular season. At just 26, Josh was very popular on the show, and had a very large fan base. But what many of his fans didn’t know was that behind that huge smile of his, was a serious mental disorder that he had been fighting with for quite some time. It was just a year ago when Josh was diagnosed with the bipolar disorder, but his family believes the disorder began to seriously affect him during the time he was filming Master Chef. Josh’s stepfather tells reporters of “the toll that being on a reality show puts on people” as well as how Josh was put on a ‘celebrity’ type pedestal, with the expectation from others that there was money and fame; but, his personal reality was that he was struggling mentally and financially.” During July Josh was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after fighting with Chicago police officers who were called to the scene by Josh himself after he suffered a serious facial wound from a self-inflicted gunshot. Josh’s mom, Gabriel Mitchell, believes this particular incident was “a call for help” but medical attention was not given to Josh because of the type of insurance he had. Josh’s mom recounted that “access to long-term, in-patient mental health care was extremely limited, which caused her to “feel as if her hands were tied.” Despite this, Josh’s mom was determined to get him the help he needed. Mitchell enrolled her son in an outpatient program that “was the best available through her insurance”, and it was this program that diagnosed Josh with schizophrenia on this past Thursday. Mitchell says “he was very distraught by this new diagnosis as he was just coming to terms with having been diagnosed with the bipolar disorder, but he just couldn’t handle this new diagnosis.” Because of this very reason, Mitchell stayed home from work on Friday to be with her son during this hard time, but left for a couple of hours to pick up her daughter from school. It was then that tragedy took place, because while stuck in traffic on the way back home, Josh’s mom received a phone call from her brother saying that a neighbor spotted Josh walking around in an alley with a gun in his hand. Josh’s mother knew she had to hurry and get to her son before he hurt himself but by the time she made it to him, she was too late.

Josh’s family “blames the lack of mental health treatment facilities and the easy access to guns as factors in his tragic death” says CNN reporters. Despite this unfortunate event, Josh’s mom has not given up. She tells reporters “I am not done, this is not over. I am going to make sure that Josh’s voice and dream live on by fighting for mental healthcare treatment.”

Zeta Tau Alpha hosts New Member Lip Sync

Last week the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha hosted New Member Lip Sync, their annual philanthropy event. This was a chance for fraternities and sororities to show off their new member classes while competing for a cause. The main purpose of this event was to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. All of the proceeds raised at the dance competition and the fundraisers held the week prior to Lip Sync go to Breast Cancer Awareness and Education.

Leading up to the main event, Zeta hosted their annual “Kiss Away Breast Cancer” in front of the student union where students were able to kiss the breast cancer banner and support the cause. For a $10 donation, students, faculty and friends received a “Do you pinky promise?” shirt adorning the famous pink ribbon. Another upcoming event dedicated to breast cancer is UCF’s Pink Out Game. Zeta will be selling $10 “think pink” tank tops for students to wear to the football game next Saturday. Proceeds will also be going towards the cause.

Previously New Member Lip Sync was held at The Venue, or old arena on campus. This year Lip Sync was held in the main arena making it possible for ten times the amount of people to attend compared to previous years. Attendance was free however there was a suggested $1 donation fee to see the new member classes compete for the best dance and help support the fight against breast cancer.

Trouble in Vacation Paradise: Disney Parks Get A Dark Twist In New Sundance Film

Randy Moore arrived at Disney’s parks just as any other average day guest would. He rode the rides, saw the shows and brought home videos of his experience. In fact, this year, the Disney Company is promoting the idea of capturing guest experiences on video to share with the public. After abiding by Disney’s standards, why would Moore possibly be at risk of turmoil?

Earlier this year Randy Moore created a film entitled “Escape From Tomorrow” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. This film was shot on standard theme park approved devices such as cell phones, digital cameras and camcorders. No large or obtrusive equipment was ever involved in the film’s creation. Actors paid their way into the parks and did not interfere with day guests what so ever. The film is said to showcase many iconic scenes from the Disney Parks, although Moore chose to give his piece a darker twist. Disney is a light hearted and family friendly place. However, Moore’s Disney displays the horrific reaction a fictional family experiences during their vacation. Taking cheerfully well-known settings and altering their appearance with editing software allowed Moore to create his own world of horror.

Surprisingly, Moore was able to create this piece with little to no complaints from the Disney Company. All park rules were abided by through the making of this film. Actors were subtle and actual chaos never ensued. Time has passed since the film’s Sundance release and there has been absolutely no word from the Disney Company on this matter. Disney strives to create icons and well known structural examples. Although Moore chose the improper “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” route for this project, he also considered his footage to be under the coverage of public domain. Thousands of visitors flock to the Disney parks daily and vividly memorize the sights and sounds. Why would giving his artistic interpretation of them make things any different from a normal vacation video?

Moore was concerned less about violating protocol in this video than he was about how successfully he could accomplish the technique he was seeking. The viewer’s take on his entertaining twist was his main concern. After successfully walking through Mickey’s Backdoor, Moore may not need to escape from tomorrow after all.

Has Technology Changed The Way We Communicate?

Technology has pushed our generation to greater heights in different avenues. From huge strides in our medical field to Google glasses and 4D movies but how has this changed the way we speak to each other? Texting is a form of communication but its been proven that speaking on the phone is almost non existent and doesn’t have as much importance. Texting or instant messaging are the biggest forms of communication but seeing and hanging out with people face to face is no longer the norm. But why?

In doing research for this topic it went from technology changing the way we communicate and how we behave to technology changing our actual personalities. According to goodtherapy.com people who text a lot are less likely to have meaningful conversations and uncomfortable in social situations. Even with video games, children and adults alike feel like they can connect more with a game or an avatar than with an actual person.

Wekiwa Island Bar Set Ablaze

At approximately 2:30AM this past Monday, flames rose from the Wekiwa Island Bar as the popular community hangout destination along the Wekiwa River bank burned to the ground. As of this moment, fire marshals and other officials believe a malfunctioning power strip was the cause, sparking a flame when no one was around to stop it from spreading.

According to Seminole County Fire Rescue officials, the fire was first noticed by a nearby driver who saw and smelled the smoke. They quickly drove to the location’s gate, where the 2,000-ft wooden structure had been almost entirely engulfed by the fire. Firefighters arrived at 2:35AM and extinguished the fire within minutes. Fortunately, the bar was the only building to catch fire, while the surrounding food truck, picnic area, and environmental center all remained untouched.

Bar owner, Bill Weinaug reminisced on the business, which he had owned for four years, stating, “It’s a family place where people can enjoy themselves. It’s a beautiful place where the community can come. We’re working on that dream, so it’s a pretty good setback.” He went on to say that a comeback is in the works. This all happened shortly after the bar had been remodeled to be more sustainable. The bar, located in Longwood, Seminole County was not the first establishment in this area to go up in flames. In 1999, Alexander’s Restaurant, which was located in virtually the same exact place was set ablaze. Again in 2005, the Wekiwa Marina building sustained heavy damage from a fire.

Glitch in EBT system triggers shopping spree at a Louisiana Walmart

It wasn’t their low prices that were drawing in large crowds at the Springhill, Louisiana Walmart this past Saturday.  A power outage due to the failure of a back-up generator at the Electronic Benefits transfer system caused a pretty monumental glitch this weekend in the program that temporarily lifted the spending limits on all cards.

“It was definitely worse than Black Friday,” says Police Chief Will Lynd of the incident.  He reports that people were dragging out eight to ten grocery carts to take advantage of this narrow window of mistake.  One customer even got out with having made a $700 food purchase.

The glitch in the system left the store with absolutely no food on their shelves.

The mayhem went on for hours until an employee announced over the intercom that the issue had been resolved.  At that point, shoppers left abandoned full carts of groceries throughout the store and left.

Walmart stores in surrounding areas temporarily closed their doors until the issue was fixed due to fire hazard concerns because of the amount of shoppers.

A representative from the EBT program stated that this should never have been an issue.  There is a daily limit per spending limit of $50 on the card that is to be enforced by retailers at all costs, whether the system is down or not.  When the Springhill Walmart was questioned about recognizing the limit, they did not respond.

Overall, there was a way to handle the situation that was not put into motion that would have made this a less severe mishap.  I am interested to hear what is being done to make sure this does not happen again.
