Teen’s charged as adults after Mob Attack in Detroit!!

After a car accident Wedneday evening a 54 year old man, Steven Utash, was attacked by a group of a dozen or so people. Utash was driving through the Eastside of Detroit in his truck when he struck a young 10 year old boy that was crossing the street. Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody said that Utash was brutally beaten as he was trying to help the young boy lying on the middle of the street by a group of young teens ages 16, and 17 as well as two adult men ages 24 and 30. In addition, there is yet to discover what the reason was behind this attack, and it makes one wonder if this mob attack is just in response to the accident in a form to get this poor man back for hitting this ten year old that was crossing the street.

The prosecutors office stated that the ten year old who was struck by Utash was taken to the local hospital for a leg injury and is now recovering at home. But Utash is currently hospitalized in critical conditions a in a medically induces Coma as a result of the attack. Utash daughter, Felicia Utash said, “Its hard to see him lying in bed, not knowing who were are, or what is going on.” This Monday evening Detroit police arrested two teen male suspects, 17 year old Bruce Wimbush that has been charged with intent to murder as an adult, and prosecutors are still deciding if they should also charge the 16 year old as an adult in connection to the attack. Also, a 24 and 30 year old suspect was arrested thats names were not released.

Detroit Mayor, Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones issued a statement Friday in response to the outrage over the incident stating, “This vigilant style attack is not the essense of who were as Detroiters and will not be tolerated.” In conclusion i think that this is just a little representation of how the crime in Detroit is not getting any better just because it is not being talked about and that there has to be some type of act of justice as a way to help eliminate gangs in Detroit. In an order to make Detroit a safer place to live people as a whole need to come together in Detroit and come up with a plan to help this generation understand that beating people is not a form to protect their love ones because at the end of the day i believe this act of violence main motive was to hurt and kill this innocent man.

Traffic Troubles for Campus Travelers

Traveling on campus is organized chaos. As vehicles park on the edge of campus, the pedestrians pour out. Bikers, long-boarders and golf carts all participate in the sidewalk ballet. Bikers seem to merge effortlessly with the crowd, and when anything with wheels passes by, students step aside; or so it should be.

As a biker, I can’t count the numerous times I’ve had to squeal to a halt. As a UCF employee, the biggest hazards to driving on campus are students, wearing headphones, who step in front of vehicles. I myself have knocked a few guys off their long-boards while walking to class. Perhaps the most dangerous factor for pedestrians and bikers alike is the vehicle traffic on Gemini Blvd. Crosswalks are dangerously deemed hassles when you’re late for class. In many cases a yield is seen as a suggestion until a pedestrian is 6 inches away. When turning or stopping at a light, drivers often perch their vehicles on top of crosswalks instead of staying behind the white line. This causes another issue for bikers who have to safely navigate around the driver.

Solutions to these issues can be simple to identify, but may be difficult to put in place. UCF loves seeing their student numbers increase. It means more money, but it also means more traffic. Students should encourage campus planners and policy makers to further plan and construct pedestrian walkways, sidewalks, and roads for more fluid traffic patterns. In addition, UCFPD should appropriate officers to enforce regular traffic rules, including stopping behind the white line, just as much as parking services patrol the parking lots. Finally, during our everyday campus travels, as drivers, bikers, and pedestrians, we should remind ourselves to stay to the right, and avoid distractions while going from place to place.

PGA: Jones wins Houston Open in dramatic fashion, punches ticket to the Masters

If you had asked Matt Jones his plans for next weekend Sunday morning, he would have told you that he was going home to spend the weekend with his 2-year-old and newborn baby.  Scratch those plans after a memorable final round on Sunday at the Golf Club of Houston earning him a trip to the Masters.

Jones went into Sunday six strokes behind the leader but finished with a final round of 66 capping off the tournament at 15 under for the win.  The 33-year-old who played his collegiate golf at Arizona State earned 1.2 million for finishing 1st and added his first PGA victory to his resume.

The man to beat on the day was Matt Kuchar, who led most of Sunday with a respectable performance.  Jones tied Kuchar in the middle of the round but looked all but defeated after he bogeyed the 17th hole putting him at 14 under and one behind Kuchar.  What happened next would make the ending 18th hole at Houston the best place in the world to be a golf fan on Sunday.  Jones reached the difficult par-4 in two and sunk a 46-foot putt for birdie to finish at 15 under.  Fast-forward to Matt Kuchar on 18, coming in at 16 under and he uncharacteristically put his second shot into the water that lines the entire left side of the hole; he would finish with a bogey to tie Jones at 15 under for a playoff.

Playoff-hole number one would prove to be a memorable one, being that Kuchar and Jones would have to play the 18th again.  Kuchar laid in the green-side bunker after 2, while Jones was short of the bunker and 42-yards from the pin.  Jones didn’t leave Kuchar a chance as he chipped the shot in for a dramatic birdie and the unlikely win after Kuchar couldn’t hole out from the hazard.  “I walked up there and told my caddy I was going to chip it in,” said Jones after the Aussie’s first win.  Kuchar was a class act in defeat, congratulating Jones and telling reporters how impressive the finish really was considering the difficulty of 2 birdies on the 18th.

With the Masters next weekend, notable performers at the Houston Open included Mickelson T12, McIlroy T7, Garcia 3rd, and Walker T24 (T = Tied).  McIlroy finished his weekend with a tournament low round of 65.

Logano Keeps Winner’s Circle Fresh

Seven weeks into the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, there seems to be a pattern quickly emerging in regards to race winners and repeat winners aren’t included in that trend. Monday’s rain-delayed Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway saw Joey Logano become the seventh different winner of the season after a late caution and some pit strategy moves before the final restart. Logano led a race-high 108 laps en route to his first victory of the 2014 season and a potential berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup later in the season. The victory for the #22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford came at the expense of Jeff Gordon, who took two tires to inherit the lead for the final restart before subsequently being passed after the restart.

The race was originally scheduled to be run Sunday afternoon, but a strong storm front passing through the Dallas/Fort Worth area eventually caused NASCAR to postpone the race until 11 AM central time Monday morning. Points leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. found his day ended early with a bizarre incident just 13 laps in. Earnhardt clipped the infield grass on the frontstretch, destroying the left front of his #88 National Guard Chevy and sending him into the outside wall, resulting in a massive fire. He was able to walk away unharmed. Besides two spins by the #41 Haas Automation Chevy of Kurt Busch, the race ran largely caution free before a debris caution with two laps to go setup a green-white-checkered finish. After the final restart, Logano took the lead from Gordon and never looked back. Kyle Busch, Brian Vickers and rookie Kyle Larson rounded out the top five on the day.

World Cup Soccer Ball Will Have Camera’s Built Into It

For the first time ever Adidas has created a ball that can record it’s point of view. The ball is designed to hold six high definition GoPro cameras in it. The ball size hasn’t changed and will be used to record the World Cup in Brazil. Adidas is calling it the Brazucam.

This technology will be interesting to see during real time games. The chance to see the ball being hit and flying right into the net as the balls view would be an interesting choice to show. Adidas plans on using the ball around the world until it reaches the World Cup in Brazil.

This new technology could be used for other sports. Think of the possibilities of using this in a football. Seeing a side shot of the football as it reaches it’s player, or a field goal. Another great sport this could be used for is Volleyball. The chance to see if the ball hit the line or not could be done by the view of the ball now instead of weird angles that stand alone cameras take.

How will this effect player’s playing the game? The ball now has small holes where the camera is and the weight of the ball has to be heavier now. Could this affect the way a player kicks the ball when he hits the hole in the ball? I’m sure this issue will come up when it gets closer to the World Cup in Brazil. If only they came out with this sooner when 3D sports was starting this would have been great to see on a 3D TV.

Iranians find ways to fight prohibition

People love alcohol. Its one of those things that everyone does world wide. Drinking alcohol transcends race, religion, and social standing. When lawmakers ban alcohol, people just find ways around it. History in the United States has shown us that prohibition doesn’t work. When the government decided to outlaw alcohol in the 1920s, all they got was an increase in bootlegging and organized crime. People still drank as much, they just had to hide it; About a decade later, alcohol was made legal and everything went back to normal.

Today, Iran is one of the few countries in the world that prohibits its residents from using alcohol recreationally.  The conservative Islamist government is pretty strict when it comes to its alcohol laws. Police raids are common, and people found drinking face severe penalties and jail time. Despite the risks, drinking is still pretty widespread. In fact theres an estimated 200,000 alcoholics in the country. Many of them cant get help because they’re not supposed to be drinking in the first place.

Drinking is more widespread among the wealthy, since they have easier access to it. All they have to do is call someone to have liquor delivered to their homes. Contraband liquor is commonly imported from neighboring turkey, or from Russia. Other people find ways to make their own alcohol. Many make wine or moonshine in their homes. Some people even buy industrial alcohol sold in stores to drink, which like moonshine can be dangerous to consume. The young people are the ones who drink the most, feeling like they need to get away from all the restrictions their government imposes.

After Strong Start to Season, Dale Jr. Has Bad Luck in Texas

Six races into the season, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was having his strongest start in recent memory.  After a win in the “Great American Race”, the Daytona 500, followed by two second place finishes in a row at Phoenix and Las Vegas, and despite two finishes outside the top 10 at Bristol and Auto Club Speedway in California, which he followed up with a third place finish at Martinsville, Junior was leading the points race.

Unfortunately, this just wasn’t Junior’s week.  After rain postponed Sunday’s race at Texas to Monday, rain hindered the start yet again.  The Duck Commander 500 finally started under caution conditions while NASCAR finished drying the track, after NASCAR rules mandated that a race must be officially underway within 24 hours of the originally scheduled start time.  Ten laps into the official run of the race, NASCAR finally dropped the green flag to start the ‘real’ race.

On lap 13, just three laps after we first saw the green flag, Junior got a run on the #43 of Aric Almirola coming into the corner, and dropped to the low end of the track to attempt a pass.  Unfortunately, Junior dropped too low, dropping his left front tire off the track into the grass, causing the front splitter to dig into the muddy turf, destroying the left front of the car.  Junior’s #88 car then shot up the track and slammed hard into the outside wall, causing the car to burst into flames.  Junior quickly drove the car to the inside of the track, parked and got out.

After being checked and released from the infield care center, Junior was asked what happened, to which he responded “I made a mistake”.  Junior continued, stating that the angle at which he was approaching the corner, there’s a blind spot from inside the car that prevented him from being able to correctly judge how close he was to the grassy edge of the track.

In his first DNF (Did Not Finish) of the season, Junior placed last, 43rd, in the race, dropping him 5 positions to 6th in the points standings.  Joey Logano’s #22 Penske Racing Ford won the race.

Junior fans can only hope NASCAR’s most popular driver has better luck next week under the lights in the fan favorite Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington.  Coverage starts at 6:30pm ET on Saturday, April 12 on FOX.

What Happens When We Recycle

When it comes to a clean environment, the country seems to be split in terms of the level or importance and the hierarchy on the social agenda. But regardless of how hard of a “tree hugger” you are, (or not) recycling is an important part of human life and sustainability. But what exactly happens to our reusable waste once it goes to the curb?

Paper

Paper is collected and sorted based on its color, size, weight, and usage. It is then turned into a soupy paste where bleach is added and miscellaneous particles are removed. The ink is then removed from the paper by being scraped scraped off or by a chemical wash. The paper is then dried and flattened and cut into squares for resale.

Glass

Since glass can not be down cycled, (the process of breaking waste down into smaller pieces and producing other goods from them) it is usually either highly sterilized for later use, or melted down to create other glass products. However, only like colored glass will be melted down to form the same type of glass. (i.e. green, brown, or clear will be reused for similar purposes, respectfully)

Steel

Steel is relatively easy to recycle. Like glass, it to is melted down and turned into sheets or coils to be shipped off and processed into car parts or construction material. In fact U.S. law requires that all steel be made with at least 25% recycled steel.

Plastic

Plastics are more complicated to recycle than its counter parts because of its molecular structure. Plastics are typically broken down into smaller pieces or pellets and are then used to create goods such as fleece, construction material, certain furniture, or even insulation.

Scientists Developing Bio-Materials to Replace Furniture

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working on growing living materials form biological particles. The goal is to be able to create every day items that can be replaced by a plant-like material. For instance, a dining room table that you would water and keep in the sunlight, or a couch that can grow its own footrest. The possibilities are endless. With the amount of waste we produce, it is essential that we change our ways, lest we run out of natural resources and cover the world with our garbage. This would reduce the amount of resources that we take from the earth and would also be fully recyclable.

By modifying E. coli bacteria, the scientists can manipulate it to grow biofilms that contain artificial genetic programs. Then they add different chemicals to influence the materials that are produced by the biofilms. They have also designed bacterias that do not require human influence, but can act and grow on their own. This brings up some questions as to how quickly the materials can grow and advance. Because of this, many people might be hesitant to adopt this kind of technology.

These bio materials are still years away from being realistic for public use, but this can open up many doors and take us exponentially further into the future. If everyone could have a bio shirt that could grow into the shape and size that you need,  fix any tears or snags, and then be recycled, imagine how much of an impact on the world. From furniture to clothing, the possibilities are endless.

Could Liverpool break 24-year English league title drought this year with a win on Sunday?

The Merseyside club has some silverware in their cabinet from the last 10 years, however the elusive English League title could be in sight for the team if they can manage to beat their main title competitors, Manchester City FC and Chelsea FC. These games come within 2 weeks of each other for Liverpool, and each fixture will be crucial in determining who wins this year’s title. At this point in the season with only a handful of games left to play, each team controls their own destiny in terms of winning the league.

Liverpool’s current place on top of the table is not only the result of the sensational seasons for strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, who have combined for 49 goals this season thus far, credit is owed to Manchester City who have 2 games in hand, meaning that 2 fixtures for City have yet to be played due to involvement in other competitions. If Manchester City win both these games, Liverpool’s title chase could be in jeopardy. However, next weekend, Liverpool may not have to worry about those extra games if they can beat Manchester City at Anfield this upcoming Sunday, which will be a tough task for the club.

Manchester City could gain ground on the league leaders on Sunday with a win on Sunday, and a win in both of their games in hand will seal the title for City. Their two games in hand are certainly winnable too, but are not to be taken lightly in any circumstance. This could also cast doubts as to whether Chelsea FC can make a strong last push for their pursuit of the title. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has continually cast doubt onto his side and their chances  of winning the title, including recent comments that he’s “not happy with his strikers’ performances”, hinting their could be major changes in attacking options this coming off-season. Mourinho has not lost all faith in his team, as he still believes they can make a push for the title, even though his side, who will be facing Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday for their Champions League lives is the priority for now.

Although next Sunday’s matchup between contenders Manchester City and Liverpool could alone determine who could be champions of this years’ Premier League campaign, there is still plenty of football left to be played.
