Tennessee to Approve Free Community College for All High School Grads

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has a signature proposal for this year. His program would cover a complete full ride at two year colleges for any student who graduates from high school. The plan is a cornerstone to his “Drive to 55” campaign, which is a campaign that will improve the graduation rate of students from the current 32 percent all the way up to a whopping 55 percent by the year 2025. This will help students get on the job field and hopefully attract more employers to Tennessee.

Although the proposal has not gone into effect yet, it does seem to be on tract to pass as lawmakers enter the waning days of the legislative session. Gov. Haslam plans to pay for the program, which would cost about $34 million annually, by using $300 million in excess lottery reserve funds and join it with a $47 million endowment. Lawmakers are wanting to make sure there is adequate funding for the proposal, and Haslam’s fellow republicans say they expect it to pass.

What’s wonderful about this entire proposal is that thousands of students who can not obtain scholarships or financial aid will have access to further education without the fear of being in debt. The point here is not to engorge the 4-year colleges with ill-prepared undergrads, it is instead to move our students who don’t have the ability to pay for college themselves a chance to better their lives. Yes, about half of the people who do this will take the four year prep courses in order to focus on their major in a University, but the other half can become nurses, welders, and other forms of skilled labor that need a 2-year degree to be profitable.  This will help lower the poverty rate by increasing skilled labor, all while using lottery money that’s just collecting dust.

It’s tough to get hired in the airline business

As some of us are making plans for life after college, I have decided that I want to pursue a career as a flight attendant. Throughout my childhood, my father had taken my family on many road trips out of town. When I became an adult with my own means to get around, I began traveling on my own and with friends. After college, I would like to have a career that would allow me the luxury of being able to travel, which is how I had come to the conclusion that becoming a flight attendant would be the best job for me.

Recently, I had begun making announcements to my friends that I was looking for a job with an airline as a flight attendant. As a result, I had gotten a swarm of responses (all positive). Some of my friends, who are flight attendants, began giving me advice.

Apparently, this job is quite popular because, they said that sometimes it takes multiple attempts at applying in order to get the job. I guess this is true because, I had already applied to one airline and, within a few days, they had turned me down! I had one friend tell me that it took him as many as seven times applying before he finally got a job at a particular airline! There is a ratio of 10:1 for people applying for the same flight attendant job. This means that, for example, for every 1,000 jobs there are 100,000 people applying for them!

Despite this difficulty, everyone who has been a flight attendant that I know has encouraged me to keep trying. “I loved it!” “I’ve been doing this for over 20 years!” “It’s worth fighting for!” In my opinion, traveling around the world for free is definitely worth fighting for!

$100,000 raised for man beaten by angry crowd in Detroit

Steven Utash found himself in critical condition last Wednesday afternoon outside of a gas station after accidentally hitting a boy with his truck. After Utash immediately stopped his car and got out to check on the boy, a group of what police say is up to a dozen people began attacking the man. The ten year old boy, David Harrish, suffered a broken leg from the accident and is expected to recover.

Steven Utash, who currently remains in critical condition at a hospital in Detroit, does not have health insurance to cover the cost of his injuries received from the beating. A campaign has been setup on the crowdsourcing website “gofundme” in order to help cover his medical expenses. At the publication of this article, over $126,000 had been raised by 3070 people in a little over 4 days. The crowdfunding campaign was started by one of Utash’s daughters.

Detroit policed confirmed that two adults and two teenagers have been arrested and charged with assault for the beating of Utash. The two adults are aged 30 years old and 24 years old. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones issued a statement about the beating. The statement condemned the attacks: “This senseless vigilante style attack is not the essence of who we are as Detroiters and will not be tolerated” a portion stated.

How to make sure your Communication skills improve your Workplace environment

I think we all have grown up with the phrase, “Sticks and Stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Although, most of us in America, sung this as a little boy or girl, as we have gotten older, we realize that saying could not be further from the truth. In fact, the words we say to ourselves and each other affect us in such a way, that those words have incredible weight on how we function and how we think about ourselves daily. This question now presents itself. If we all, as humans, have the power to influence, will we choose to use this influence for good or for bad.

In a workplace environment, many individuals are usually working together. In order for things to run smoothly, many people have to be on the same page and be able to work together. However, in order to work together, people need to be able to communicate. Although this might sound like an easy task initially, it can be a burden when you start to cross a multitude of beliefs and opinions.

How does one make sure they are faciliating good communication? First off, communication should never be spontaneous and without rules. Every type of conversation should have boundaries between both people, that way both people feel respected. When both groups or people feel respected, then the communication between both of those parties remains “open.” Many times, a breaking down in communication is because one of the sides starts to feel un appreciated and will shut down. Another way to establish positive communication is to be very detailed with what is said. Vagueness is never a good thing in communication. Multiple problems begin to arise when simply a person does not understand exactly what the other individual means. Some of these tips can help not only communication in the workplace, but also in an individual’s life as well.

Are American’s Patching Up Their Chronic Diseases Instead of Fixing the Actual Problem?

According to the Center for Disease Control 600,000 people die from heart disease in the US. To put that into perspective this means that 25% of the deaths in the US are caused by heart disease. 26 million Americans have type two diabetes and it is estimated that 79 million adults have pre-diabetes. These statics make type two diabetes the seventh leading cause of death in America.

So how are American’s dealing with this epidemic? It seems as if they are putting a bandage on these deadly problems. In 2005 Lipitor was the 11th most distributed drug. Lipitor is a prescription drug that “helps” lower high cholesterol. There are over 500,000 open heart surgeries preformed each year in the United States.

Doctor Hans Diehl, a clinical professor of preventative medicine at Loma Linda University, holds conferences about how a plant based diet can regress the effects of heart disease and other chronic diseases. “We need to break our love affair with the high-fat diet,” a quote by Dr. Diehl speaking about how American’s are eating all the wrong things and patching up their health problems temporarily.

Dr. Montgomery is an advocate for a plant based diet to reverse the effects of heart disease. Montgomery pinpoints that as American’s spend more on health care the amount of heart disease and other chronic diseases go up. Threw out American history there is a clear chart that showed as our foods became cheaper and more processed the amount spent on health care went up.  “To truly prevent and reverse heart disease, we must get to the root cause, which is in the foods we eat,” said Dr. Montgomery.

Tennessee Will Be Providing Free Community College To All High School Graduates

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has proposed an ambitious plan to get more high school graduates in the state of Tennessee to attend college.  The governor proposed this plan to Tennessee lawmakers earlier this year, but it seems like the plan has been gaining traction recently.  It has not only been well received by the lawmakers either,  the public has seemed to react extremely well to the proposal.

Gov. Bill Haslam’s plan to send high school graduates to community college for free is the main part of a bigger initiative called “Drive to 55”.  “Drive to 55” is the plan that Gov. Haslam has been pushing for a long time.  It is a plan to improve the state of Tennessee’s graduation rate from where it is now, 32 percent, to at least 55 percent.  What Governor Bill Haslam wants from the legislators is for them to make it possible to pay the tuition for a two year college for all graduating seniors.  This free college education, Governor Bill Haslam hopes, will inspire young people to do better in school.

The only problem with a plan to pay college tuition for all high school graduates is that it will be hard to pay for, but Governor Bill Haslam believes  that he has found a way.  Governor Haslam thinks that the best way to pay for the education is to divert some money from the states lottery.  It looks like this lofty goal could soon become a reality thanks to the planning and preparation of Governor Bill Haslam and other lawmakers in Tennessee.  Some states, including Florida, are considering following Tennessee’s lead and starting a similar program.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 Coming Next Year 2015

It has been a long time coming but gamers will finally see a third game in the series. Actually, the game is technically not a third, but the start of a new franchise DICE plans on developing off and on over the course of the next few years. Battlefront games are going to be developed alongside the new release Titanfall franchise, rotating releases every other year.

Since Titanfall came out this year, it only makes sense that battlefront will release sometime in 2015. We now have evidence to back that up. EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgenson said the game “will most likely come out around the same time the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of ’15.”

The release of the new movie Star Wars: Episode 7 is December 18, 2015 but Battlefront is expected to come out 6 months later in November, the traditional month for high profile First Person Shooter releases. Star wars fans want the game now but patiently wait as they have done for 9 years. By 2015, it will have been a decade after the release of Battlefront 2.

No game-play or footage has been released as of yet besides the E3 announcement trailer and there are many questions as to what content will be in the game. EA acknowledged that one of the roots of the game is a third-person mode but that is yet to be confirmed. The trailer took a first person approach which may be an hint to gamers but the specifics of the game are still unknown. We expect to see factions based on what the movies present but there will likely be some friendly faces that will make it in game.

2015 could not come faster but DICE taking its time is a good sign. There is a huge fan following for this game and DICE can potentially bring back an era of gaming.

Two People Die After Plane Crashes During a Movie Shoot In Marion County

Two people that were aboard a small plane were killed when the amateur built aircraft crashed on Sunday night in Summerfield, Florida. Some investigators said that the plane was a Vans RV-7 and that it went down at the Monroe Airport around 7:15 PM Sunday night. The Fire officials of Marion County said that the finale of the low-budget zombie movie was being filmed at that scene and that a lot of extras were nearby at the time that the crash happened.

A neighbor said that the accident could have been a lot worse if the airplane would have fallen over where all those people were and it could’ve been very tragic. Officials say that the passenger was a 70-year old person named Joseph Sardinas, of The Villages and he was filming the pilot, a 65-year old named Dennis Monroe of Summerfield, during the flight.

One person said that she heard the neighbor’s plane circling long over a 20-acre field for about an hour right before she heard the engine shut off. The witnesses said that as the plane banked over the movie shoot site the engine then stalled and the plane crashed nose first. Some neighbors said that the people that died were very nice neighbors that had lived there for years, and that he had built the plane and he would fly it on a regular. Monroe was the Belleview Public Works Director for 26 years.

The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. The officials are saying that a report will be released on the crash in about nine to twelve months because it takes some time for a full investigation. This was a very sad situation especially considering that they were just filming a low budget film and trying to have some fun and they died tragically.

UCF Makes Breakthrough Developments in Invisibility Technology

Ten years ago, if someone talked about invisibility, then they would most likely be referring to Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. However, a team of scientists led by Dr. Debashis Chanda at the University of Central Florida are near a complete breakthrough in the technology.

This technology has been explored before. Japan and Singapore have had researchers come up with devices which allowed things to be see-through, but Dr. Chanda insists that those were more illusions rather than invisibility.

Here at UCF, the technology in question is regarded as “cloaking”. It is a material that will be able to bend light around an object, and thus making it undetectable to the human eye. They are hoping that this new technology will be able to be adapted to military stealth aircrafts.

Not too long ago, this was achieved at a nanoscale, but since then, the technology has leapt forward and can now cover up a surface of up to four inches by four inches. Dr. Chanda and his team hope to be able to adapt this technology to aircrafts in about five years time.

I honestly believe that this breakthrough could change the way we see military tactics, and could also start an all-new industry in technology. It will be important to see how this research develops and how far the boundaries of this fascinating innovation can be pushed.
