NBA: Philadelphia 76ers Continue Tanking with 20 Straight Losses

With exactly one month left of regular NBA season, several power squads are competing heavily for a spot in the playoffs.  Aside from them, however, it almost seems like a race for the number 1 overall draft pick among some of the bottom teams.  Nowadays, the Philadelphia 76ers are making a strong case for the draft pick with the franchise tanking more and more each game.

After trading away their best player, Jrue Holiday last season, the Sixers set out on a mission to rebuild over the next few years.  With this goal in place, sports analysts gave them a near-zero chance at winning the NBA Title during the preseason rankings.  During this homestretch of the season, Philadelphia has met all of these expectations with an ongoing 20 game losing streak.

From a future perspective, however, there is quite some potential for the future of the 76ers.  One of the key roles for the franchise is instilled in Michael Carter-Williams, a first-year man out of Syracuse.  Throughout Philadelphia’s forgettable 2013-14 campaign, Carter-Williams has managed to put up 16.8 points and 6.2 assists per game, and has solidified himself as a candidate for the Rookie of the Year Award.

In addition to Carter-Williams, the Sixers will be a contender for the top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft on June 26, 2014; this might be very good news for the city of brotherly love.  With some extremely talented college players potentially departing their schools early, such as Jabari Parker of Duke University, Philadelphia could strike gold this summer when selecting the newest members of the franchise.

Until then, however, the 76ers will likely continue tanking as their losing streak grows larger.

Lionel Messi becomes all-time leading goalscorer for FC Barcelona with 371 goals

Lionel Messi managed to score a hat trick (3 goals) in Barcelona’s 7-0 win over Osasuna this Sunday afternoon, bringing his tally of goals in all competitions, including friendly matches, to 371 goals. He passed the 87-year-old record that was held by Paulinho Alcantara, who scored 369 goals in 357 total matches for the club between the years 1912 and 1927. Messi added to his record-breaking career, with more records that he’s on pace to break within the next 2 months. The next one being the scoring record in “El Clasico”, held by Alfredo di Stefano with 19 goals, and the Argentinean, with 18 goals, can tie, possibly break the record next Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu, home stadium of Real Madrid. Another conquest that Messi is making is the all-time leading goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League. With 67 goals in the competition, Messi seeks to break the 71-goal record held by Raul Gonzalez.

Aside from the illustrious career of the Argentine, him and his teammates made a crucial statement with a 7-0 home win today, a week before the pivotal fixture versus Real Madrid, “El Clasico”, a rivalry that runs deeper than any other. This rivalry is only made more interesting as Messi will face Cristiano Ronaldo, a rivalry between two players who are seen as the best at what they do. As it stands in La Liga, Real Madrid are 4 points above Barcelona. Next weekend’s game could see that gap lengthened or cut very close. Even with many points left to play for after next week’s game, this could still be a turning point in the tale of the 3 team race for the La Liga crown, with Atletico Madrid nipping at the heels of their cross-town rivals Real Madrid.

One Year After Potential UCF Tragedy

March 18, 2013 was the day that UCF avoided a tragedy.

James Oliver Seevakumaran, a 30-year-old former student still living on campus was found in his dorm room after his apparent suicide. Also found in the room: a tactical rifle, a pistol, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, homemade explosives and a timeline ending with “good luck and give them hell.”

Nearly a year later, the chaos in the UCF community has subsided and everything is seemingly back to the way it was, but in many ways the event has actually changed the university and the students forever.

Arabo Babakhani, roommate of Seevakumaran and senior aerospace engineering major, witnessed the incident first hand and first alerted police. According to UCF Police, they received a fire alarm call around 12:20 AM, and when he heard the alarm, Babakhami exited his room. In the process of leaving his room, Babakhami says that Seevakumaran pointed a gun at him. At that point, Babakhami slammed his door closed, locked it, then barricaded himself in the bathroom until police arrived.

Many people were effected by this incident, and according to a representative from UCF’s Counseling and Psychological Services, over 2,000 students contacted them following the incident. A few students in particular were greatly effected and a few were out over then edge, but the representative said that in the end everyone came out with a better physical and mental health. All of the students though, Babakhani has had one hell of a year. After the incident, he moved into his fraternity’s house on campus, but then moved off-campus to University House. He says that he is always recognized on campus and people always bring it up to him, even when he’s trying to forget about it all. Babakhani says that having to move so much has effected him mentally and has even put a strain on his finances.

I do think that as a university we should never forget what happened, and what could’ve happened, but I think we need to move on and continue improving as a community.

Buddhist Student Settles in Lawsuit with Louisiana School System

A Buddhist student attending Negreet High School in Sabine Parish, Louisiana alleged that a teacher referred to his religion as “stupid.” Also, there were reports that officials in the school would force Christian beliefs upon their students, and would incorporate prayers into classes.  The student’s science teacher, Rita Roark, professed that the Bible is 100% true and that the Earth is “6,000 years old.”

The school denied it saying that they don’t encourage nor discourage religious activities, and won’t assign religious texts among other things. Marjorie Esman according to Huffingtonpost.com, states, “No child should feel that a teacher is trying to impose religious beliefs, and this agreement ensures that this will no longer be the case at Sabine Parish schools.”

On Friday the settlement was established. However it is not really a settlement. In the legal sense it is  what is called a consent decree and it stipulates that there will be a $4,000 payment to the mother of the child so he can attend school in Many, Louisiana.  Also, the school district of Sabine Parish has to provide the student with transportation and accommodate his transition to another school.

It is very interesting to think that people still want to impose their religious beliefs upon others. It is 2014 and people still feel justified ridiculing others based on their creed/religion especially since this school is a public institution. This kind of behavior took place at my High School as well. A teacher would always find a way to declare and enforce his ideas on the classroom.

What To Do When Sleep Depravation Becomes A Problem

Sleeping is the most crucial part of one’s day.  The human body needs rest just as much as it needs activity and movement.

Sleep allows for higher productivity due to more energy as well as less stress throughout the day.  Without the correct amount of sleep concentration diminishes and memory loss occurs.

The human body needs to rest in order to repair and rejuvenated damaged cells. Sleep is vital for both physical and mental wellness.

Over 70 million Americans have trouble with falling or staying asleep leaving them sluggish and tired. The constant tossing and turning leads to irritation and frustration.

Finding a solution can be tricky because some sleep medications require a visit to the doctor, have detrimental side effects, or become addictive.

Doctors recommend that sleep medication should be limited to short-term use cases to reduce the risk of negative outcomes. Cases include traveling and recovery from medical procedures.

Also, sleep medication with melatonin should be kept to small doses.

Although the compound occurs naturally in the human body to regulate sleep cycles, medicines should contain more than just melatonin.

Subjects should look for medication that includes natural herbal ingredients, which stimulate calming effects that lead to a better nights sleep.

Wild lettuce is effective at reducing anxiety and calming restlessness as well as magnesium and calcium, which are both sleep boosters and work better when taken together.

Meditation and gentle yoga are also encouraged to relax one’s body and mind.

There are numerous options for people who suffer from lack of sleep, but one should be weary of which option they choose. Always keep in mind that the natural option is best for one’s body and health.

Musician Chris Brown Has Been Booted Out of Rehab and Was Taken Into Custody

Singer Chris Brown was booted out of a drug rehab, then taken by Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies on Friday, March 14th. Brown was ordered by a court order to enter the drug-rehab since June 2009. This goes back to the incident of physical abuse towards singer Rihanna.

Chris Brown is making wrong choices that will only hurt him, not help. If you get in trouble with the law, then you should follow all rules and cooperate with the facility. As an entertainer, the more trouble you get into can cause the public to give you more attention. Chris Brown is pulling the oldest trick in the book. I feel that Chris Brown does not care whatsoever about fixing his personal problems at all.

Chris Brown has had two revokes on his probation by a judge, one of them involving the arrest of Brown by the White House because he punched a man.

Another incident included Brown getting kicked out of a rehab because he threw a rock at his mom’s car. Apparently Chris Brown was mad at his mom because she recommended that he stay in rehab.

It is so pathetic that Chris Brown thinks he can do whatever he wants, and feels that no one should say anything to him. Men in his category are stupid and ignorant. They will most likely be that way their entire life and will not change at all.

However the most recent rehab in Los Angeles Brown was kicked out of is still under speculation why he got kicked out.

Are Honda Odysseys Dangerous?

As of Saturday March 15, Honda is recalling about 900,000 Odyssey minivans because of a potential fire hazard. This recall was posted in a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Honda told the administration that part of the fuel pump in the Odyssey models from 2005-1010 could “deteriorate prematurely in a manner that can result in cracks” and allow gasoline to leak. The automaker believed that the cracks in the fuel pump could have several causes including acid from chemicals found in car washes and acid materials used in fertilizer and chemicals used to control dust. Fuel leaks can cause a vehicle fire. Honda says no fires or injuries have been reported yet.

The recall involve 886,815 Odysseys that were built at the Honda plant in Alabama. Although the proper repair parts are not yet available until the summer, Honda said they will provide “interim” parts to their customers. Honda dealers will repair vehicles for free once the parts come in.

In September, a total of 318,000 2003-2004 Odysseys were recalled because the air bags might deploy without the vehicle being in an accident. The in November, Honda had a total recall of 344,000 of its 2007-2008 Odyssey minivans because of a computer malfunction that could cause “heavy and unexpected braking without the driver pressing on the brake pedal.”

The agency also said on its website that Chrysler was recalling about 18,000 cars because of a transmission problem. Chrysler said that the transmission on the 2014 500L could become stuck in Park or that it might pick the wrong gear, causing the car to move “in an unintended or unexpected direction.” Chrysler said it was not aware of any accidents related to the issue.

Target and the Worst Photoshop Mistake Ever-How Does This Affect Us All?

Yesterday I was looking at Tumblr and a blog I follow shared a picture of a model wearing a bikini shown on the Target website.  When looking closely you notice some off shapes to the model’s body.  Clearly, whoever was in charge of altering the model’s appearance did not do such a great job.

There were sharp edges left from where a part of her side had been slimmed down, and also a clear square shaped cut from her thighs and bikini line.  There is no hiding the fact that the model was to look slimmer to the viewer.

With Target being such a big company, how could a small slip like this happen?  Why would they even do it?  To be a model you already have to be very slim.  More and more are people realizing that just because in a picture they are perfect, doesn’t mean they really are.

There is a horrifying trend on being slim and they are usual sparked by the desire of unrealistic goals.  With internet trends like “thinspo” and ” thigh gap,” women have established fantasy goals for themselves.  They excessively exercise or develop eating disorders just to get to where they think they should be.

I wonder if a photoshop disaster like this will open peoples’ eyes on body images and what is real and unreal.  Could it possibly help women’s confidence and begin to understand that you can’t be everything you see in the pictures?  Society has set an acceptance on being thin and beautiful and doing anything to get that way.  People look at crazy diets and plastic surgery like it’s nothing.

I just hope that one day people, men and women, will come to an understanding that they need to love who they are and just focus on being healthy and happy.  Not always looking at what to fix and how they can be better or look like someone else does.

Women, an insight to what they REALLY focus on.

So I was attending a meeting for the upcoming Vagina Monologues show that is being put on by the students of UCF. I was there because I volunteered to be part of the tech crew, it looks good on your resume. This meeting was to really dive into what the Vagina Monologues was all about and as the director put it, “to find your inner vagina.” Its safe to say I didn’t literally find my inner vagina, thank God, but I did find out whats behind most women “inner vagina.”

The room was full of mostly women, it is a play for the Vagina Monologues so I expected that. There were three guys in the room, or should I say two because the director was gay and was like one of the girls, and I mean that in a respectful way. He eluded to finding his inner vagina while taking on the role of director for this student project. He pointed out how he started to understand the feminists side of things and how it even applied to men, which inside I was elated to hear. The two other guys were myself and some dude who was just as unsure about being there as me; I could tell from his facial expressions as we continued to make eye contact as if to say “what the eff.” The first project of the evening was to talk about what of your body do you dislike the most and why. Sticking to the theme of the Vagina Monologues each person one by one revealed their deep dark secret about some part of them they felt insecure about and why or what caused that insecurity to show through. I said to myself, “crap” and the other guy followed across the room with a gesture of putting his hand over his eyes. I felt better about myself knowing I wasn’t going to be the only one suffering here.

So the ladies start one by one (because us dudes weren’t about to volunteer to be first, or maybe it was because we were just chicken shit?) anyways, the ladies start to reveal parts of them they didn’t really like. Now I wasn’t ready for what I was about to hear, and it took me by surprise. Most women walk around so confidently and, at least for me, that’s why I  am petrified to approach a beautiful girl (besides being socially awkward). So I’m listening to all these beautiful girls talk about their thighs, or butt, or how much hair they have, or messed up teeth, and I’m thinking to myself, “I don’t see any of this!” Then they start relating their insecurities to sex, and I had an aha moment. One girl even said that when she was in middle school that a guy turned around and told her “nobody is ever gonna wanna fuck you.” Another girl revealed that while she was having sex with her then boyfriend, he slapped her on the ass and said “I’m going to pretend this is bigger.” All of these girls had stories of flaws, or what they considered to be flaws, that occurred trying to be up to societies standard of what is “sexy.” All there “flaws” had something to do with sex. Most of the girls there, while telling their story, used the word “fuck” or “sex” but never the word “love.”

So it came to be my turn and I revealed something about my face and my receding hairline, and how when I was 17 some little kid in a grocery cart said to mommy “why does that man have bumps all over his face?” I also revealed that back in high school most people thought I was gay and called me “spice boy” because I liked N’SYNC. It was hard, but I wanted to be fair since all these girls had the courage to reveal such well… revealing things. Then I felt the need to say something profound, since I never thought I would have this type of opportunity again. I told them that I noticed that they all let society and sex determine what is appealing (not in those exact words). I looked at one particular girl I told her she was beautiful. She blushed and without even realizing it, said “oh thank you, I don’t even have any makeup on.” I didn’t point out that the very comment she just made is what I was talking about, I didn’t want to be rash. I then told the group of women that you shouldn’t worry about what you look so much on the outside, because in turn you subconsciously do the same in turn when you choose what guys to talk to. I told them its whats in the inside that really counts. They began to  say “awe” and “okay, when can we get married” and “you’re perfect.” I didn’t let that fill my head up as I then said, “you may say I’m perfect but I don’t get approached by women at all, because of looks, and if you do this you will never know whats on the inside” (again not in those exact words). Then they all told me I was cute and that when I walked in the door (because I was late) that I seemed like a nice guy.

We did some dancing to go along with revealing our insecurities and then showcased our “flaws” in our dancing to metaphorically “wash them away.” There are a lot of quotation marks here. Okay, so after it was all over I waited around and helped to clean up, just to show I’m a team player and to secretly see if any of the girls who said such nice things about me would approach me and start a conversation. I was especially hoping the girl who I told was beautiful would. But nonetheless nobody did.

I was disappointed that nobody took anything away from what I said, or maybe they did but just need some time to process it. I will be working with these girls for a few days next week so only time will tell. In closing I just hope, or better yet wish, that girls would focus on love and not so much sex. Sex will always be there, love wont. Love and for me, God, are my foundations I’m using to find my next TRUE love, and when you have that solid foundation, insecurities like these don’t surface. At least that’s what I believe. To all those women that might read this, don’t take away anything harsh, I say this all with love and kindness in my heart.

Don’t forget to check out the Vagina Monologues UCF student production happening Saturday March 22nd at 7pm in the Pegasus Ballroom. Hope to see you there.

Draft Day Nearing for Struggling NFL Teams

The 2014 NFL draft is near and for many hopeful college prospects their draft stock is changing daily. The Houston Texans will be on the hot seat with the number 1 overall pick this year.

There is much talk about the Texans selecting a quarterback to fill the needs of the failing team. There are three top quarterbacks that are being discussed as worthy selections for the Texans. Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, and UCF’s own Blake Bortles are all being discussed. Each of them have been thought to be number 1, but then a different of the three is switched for the other with a new reason.

The next pick is the St. Louis Rams. They already have a great deal of money in their quarterback, Sam Bradford so they will be shopping around for weapons to help jump start their failing offense. There is talks about the Rams selecting Wide Receiver Sammy Watkins from Clemson. If they decide to trade away the pick to a team with much higher need, the rams could get several other draft picks for this year or next year.

If the Rams decide to trade away this pick, teams could instead look for defensive weapons like Jadeveon Clowney at defensive end. He is a great selection and certainly the best player on this years draft board, but certain teams need to fill certain holes in their lineup more than just picking the best player overall.

I am really excited to see how each of these top players end up helping out these teams in need. Blake Bortles will be the highest UCF player ever selected and could bring quite a bit of attention to UCF Football.
