NBA: Heat Hold Off Thunder on the Road

On February 9, 2014, two of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) best teams—the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City (OKC) Thunder—met at Chesapeake Energy Arena to face off in a potential “NBA Finals preview”.  The match-up feature the two best players on the planet LeBron James and Kevin Durant.  These two are highly regarded as the leading candidates for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.  In addition, OKC’s All-Star Point Guard Russell Westbrook made his return to the court after having his third knee surgery within a year.

Though the Thunder were the first team to put points on the board, James quickly responded by scoring 12-straight points for the Heat.  Miami’s lead grew as the game went on; Oklahoma City would never be on top again.  While LeBron shined, Durant was relatively quiet early on.  However, he would end up recording 28 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in this match.

In the fourth quarter, the Heat were hit with a minor scare when James started gushing blood out of his nose.  It turned out the Thunder’s Serge Ibaka hit him in the face as he was lifting off to dunk.  James would finish the play, but leave the game with 5:50 remaining in regulation.  He ended his night with 33 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.

With their best player being evaluated in the locker room, the Miami Heat did not even glance back as they finished the fourth quarter strong.  Dwyane Wade had 24 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds on the night as the Heat defeated the Thunder 103-81 in Oklahoma City.  They will head back to Miami to face the Chicago Bulls on Sunday at 3:30 pm Eastern Time.

What Are The Top Ten Healthiest Dog Breeds?

Researched has shown that certain dog breeds have lower chances of genetic diseases, bone-related injuries and conditions relating to their skin and coat. The following top ten breeds are among the healthiest dogs that usually live a long healthy life.

1. Labradoodles are a mixed breed crossed between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. They have few claims for bone-related injuries and conditions related to the coat and skin. Their coat should be shampooed, brushed, and trimmed regularly.

2. Australian Shepherds are also relatively healthy and are exposed to minor health issues such as hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and Collie Eye Anomaly.  They live an average lifespan of 12-15 years. They are intelligent, obedient and require regular exercise to remain healthy.

3. Havanese live between 12 to 14 years and suffer from minor health problems including patellar luxation, deafness and elbow dysplasia. They are a non shedding breed.

4. Chihuahua’s are a small breed that are loyal, intelligent, and among the healthiest. They suffer from minor health conditions including hypoglycemia, patellar luxation and pulmonic stenosis. They require minimal exercise because of their size.

5. Mixed breed dogs are generally among the healthiest and are less likely to develop genetically based diseases.

6. Border Collies are exposed to minor health problems including seizures and hypothyroidism. They have a lifespan of 10-14 years and have a high level of train-ability.

Nestle is voluntarily recalling two of its Hot Pocket products as part of a larger meat recall.

Hot Pockets recalled after meat found ‘unfit for human food’

Nestlé announced Tuesday that it was voluntarily recalling two of the snack products following a widespread meat recall. The move affects its Philly Steak and Cheese Hot Pockets in three sizes and its Croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese flavor in the two-pack box. In total, about 238,000 cases of Hot Pockets were recalled. This decision follows an earlier recall of meat from Rancho Feeding that affected some Hot Pockets. These products may have been affected by a recall by Rancho Feeding Corp. last week of 8.7 million pounds of beef product. “Our teams at Nestlé have reviewed our vendor records and have determined that one Nestlé brand has been impacted by the Rancho meat recall. Nestlé is dedicated to food quality and the health and safety of our consumers. For these reasons, we initiated this recall. We sincerely apologize for any concerns created by this voluntary product recall,” Nestlé said, adding that a small quantity of meat was used at a Hot Pocket production facility in California.

In a release Friday, the Department of Agriculture reported that Rancho Feeding was recalling about 8.7 million pounds of meat because it “processed diseased and unsound animals, and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection.” The USDA wrote that the products are “unfit for human food.” Its food safety branch noted that it hadn’t received any reports of illness from people who ate the items, however. Consumers who bought the recalled Hot Pockets can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

UCF Football: 2014 Preview

I remember when Knights head football coach George O’Leary told his ball club in the 2013 season, “Nobody respects you guys”. Well, the Knights football team played with a chip on their shoulder and proved everybody they can compete with big name teams after finishing the season 12-1 (8-0) in the American Athletic Conference in 2013. So, just how much respect does the UCF Knights football team have? They have so much respect that the Heisman Trophy winner, “Famous” Jameis Winston of the Florida State Seminoles said he wished, “Our team could play UCF. They can play with anybody, and I respect UCF”. The Knights silenced the world after putting up 52 points against a high-scoring Baylor Bears football team that was averaging over 53 points a game in the 2013 season. The 52 points UCF put up are the most they’ve scored against a ranked opponent. Head coach George O’Leary lost some playmakers on both ends of the football. Lets take a closer look of who’s coming back for the 2014 season:

The Knights return ten defensive starters that include defensive backs Jacoby Glenn and Clayton Geathers who became All-Conference selections. Geathers had 100 tackles and two interceptions during the 2013 season. He started all 13 games last season and will be a key to this UCF defense in the fall after receiving UCF’s “Most Improved Defensive Player”. Redshirt freshman Jacoby Glenn has showed a lot of promise in his first season collecting 52 tackles, two interceptions, and two sacks. Glenn was voted on to the All-American Athletic Conference first team, and was selected to the Freshman All-America team. Senior linebacker Terrance Plummer is a player who’s motor never stops running! This will be a player to keep an eye on. He led the team with 110 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Plummer seems to always have a knack for always being around the football. No wonder he was the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Defensive MVP!

On the offensive side, former Knights quarterback Blake Bortles has to be the biggest loss. Other than Bortles not returning, junior running back Storm Johnson declared for the NFL Draft, and the McCray twins (Justin, Jordan) were two talented offensive guards who won’t be back as well. The quarterback position will be an area of concern due to the lack of experience. Sophomore quarterback Justin Holman looks like he’ll be taking the snaps heading into fall since he received very little playing time last season. Holman played in three games last season going 9-14 for 75 yards, 1 td, and an interception. He’ll have plenty of weapons around him which includes wide receivers Rannell Hall, J.J. Worton, and Brashad Perryman. Sophomore half back William Stanback looks like he’ll be a stud as well after finishing his freshman year with 443 yards and 6 touchdowns.

It’ll be interesting to see how quarterback Justin Holman pans out if he ends up being the starting quarterback for UCF in the fall. He has plenty of talent around him like I’ve already stated. If he can get the offense going, there’s no doubt UCF can make another run at another BCS game. The defense is definitely going to be the strength of this team and I expect every last defensive player to play big day and day out so UCF can have yet another successful season.

Cavs’ Irving Takes the MVP as East Defeats West in Highest Scoring All Star Game in History

There is no better way to put the capper on a memorable All-Star weekend than with one of the highest scoring games in NBA all-star history. The Eastern Conference climbed all the way back from an 18 point deficit to defeat the Western Conference 163-155.

Numerous record were broken on both sides in an action packed conclusion to All Star 2014. The 163-155 final score set the record for most combined points in an all-star game with 316. The Eastern conference connected on 70 field goals, breaking the previous record of 69 set by the West in 2007. As for the West, they set a new record for most 3-point attempts by one team with 56 and made 16 3-pointers, breaking the previous record of 14 held by the East in 2012 and by the 2013 western conference team last year.

As for individual player performances, Clippers All-Star Blake Griffin’s 19 field goals including ten of them in the first half broke Wilt Chamberlin’s previous record of 17 set back in 1962. He and teammate Kevin Durant both finished with a game high 38 points just a few points shy of the all-star scoring record of 42 set by Wilt Chamberlin. Carmelo Anthony made an all-star game record 8 three pointers while Kevin Durant attempted a record 17 three pointers.

Despite all the great performance, Cavaliers Guard Kyrie Irving grabbed MVP honors with 31 points and 13 Assist helping propel the west from an 18 point deficit.

With another All Star weekend in the books, fans can hardly wait for next year as all-star weekend stops in New York City in 2015

Jimmy Fallon brings ‘The Tonight Show’ back to New York City.

Most likable guy on late night television kicks off the all new ‘Tonight Show’ as he sits on Leno’s big chair and brings all the silly-fun freshness back to the Big Apple for the first time in 40 years.

It was announced late last year that Fallon would be taking over the NBC late night show, as Jay Leno stepped down as host. Consequently, Seth Meyers on the other hand is taking over Jimmy with a whole new ‘Late Night’ which premieres Monday 24th of this month.

It has been an enormous investment for the Universal company to move the franchise back to NYC, and in the words of chief executive of NBC, Stephen B. Burke, their “doing it right”.  The investment includes the cost of a new state-of-the-art studio and control room, the addition of 50 new chairs for the audience, a completely redesigned lobby, and last but not least, a brand new Spike Lee-directed opening title sequence. Some things stay the same though, The Roots are staying as house band and co-host Steve Higgins will also stay on Fallon’s team.

It all starts tonight at midnight with special guests Will Smith and U2. Sit back and relax as the new man of Jimmy Fallon makes late night television history, one laugh at a time.

Mixed Feelings of a NASCAR Fan; Part 2: How NASCAR Kept this Lifelong Fan Another Year

So last week, I talked about why NASCAR has almost lost a lifelong fan in me by continually making misstep after misstep, making the sport more and more boring and irrelevant. This week, I’ll focus on some changes they’ve made this season that made me hold out one more year. I’ll address each of my points from last week, add others, and weigh in on how the start of the NASCAR season (which started towards the end of last week) has increased my excitement this year.

Why I decided to give NASCAR one more chance.
At the end of last season, I was jaded, disappointed, and ready to give up on NASCAR, but in the weeks leading up to Daytona Speedweeks, NASCAR’s nearly two week long season kickoff, NASCAR made several announcements of several changes coming to the sport in the 2014 season. NASCAR’s been listening to fans just like me from all around the country, and are hearing the complaints from the fans, and NASCAR says it’s committed to making a sport the fans can be excited about. Some changes address some of the issues I mentioned last week, some don’t, but overall, they were enough to catch my attention and decide to give it another year.

One of my points last week was there’s no excitement anymore, and although NASCAR has yet to add more exciting tracks to the schedule, they managed to add excitement to an aspect of NASCAR that I rarely watch because it is so boring: qualifying. For the majority of the sport’s history, nearly all drivers in a race had to qualify for the race in a basic solo qualifying run. This means that each driver would go out on the track alone, run two laps, and the fastest lap they run would count; whether you qualified, as well as the starting order of the race, would be determined by overall fastest lap times. Yes, a pretty boring thing to watch indeed. However, beginning this year, qualifying will be much more like a race of it’s own. Qualifying and position will still be determined by lap times, but in this new format, the lap times will come from a ‘qualifying session’, where all drivers attempting to qualify will be on the track at the same time, much like a practice session. Once the qualifying session is over, each driver’s single fastest lap in the entire session will be ranked to determine qualification and running order. This is an interesting change that makes qualifying sessions almost as enticing to watch as the race itself, which increases the excitement of the sport.

Another aspect of excitement (or lack thereof) I mentioned last week was the lack of excitement on the track itself due to car changes for the sake of safety. I mentioned NASCAR’s car redesign in 2007, which virtually eliminated exciting crashes (and often exciting racing as well). This 5th generation NASCAR stock car, known at the time as the “Car of Tomorrow” or COT, was intended to lower overall speeds, give the drivers a larger ‘safety pocket’, and make the sport safer in general. However, as I mentioned last week, the 4th generation cars were safer than any previous versions, and offered high speeds and spectacular crashes. So, after six years of complaints from fans that the COT has eliminated excitement, NASCAR went back to the drawing bored, and in 2013, unveiled the 6th major version of the NASCAR stock car, simply named the ‘Gen 6’. This new Gen 6 borrowed from the safety improvements of the COT, such as the larger driver ‘safety pocket’, and arrow-dynamics that prevent cars from flying 30-50 feet in the air in the event they become airborne (a common issue with the 4th generation cars), while also borrowing the faster, drafting-friendly arrow-dynamics of the 4th generation that made it so popular with fans and drivers alike. Running with the momentum of the generally well received Gen 6 car, NASCAR made one small adjustment for the 2014 season in the form of a modified rear spoiler, which seems to have made another improvement in racing excitement, at least in early testing here during Daytona Speedweeks.

The last major change this year has been yet another change to the Championship format. NASCAR is keeping it’s simplified points system as I described last week, but is now adopting a simplified version of the “Chase” playoffs as well. Rather than reseting the points and basically having a ‘mini-season’ with the 12 drivers who qualified for the Chase, there will be a series of knock out rounds to narrow the drivers in contention for the Cup down to only 4 by the end of the season; it’s NASCAR’s version of a bracket system. This new system is not only based on points, but also factors in wins, which is something NASCAR fans have been asking for: more emphasis on wins. Overall, I feel this new Chase system may work in NASCAR’s favor, but we’ll have to wait until the end of the season to know for sure. One thing is certain, it sparked my interest, rather than annoying me with ‘yet another points change’.

Daytona Speedweeks: A taste of the season?
Saturday night’s “Sprint Unlimited” exhibition race to kick off the season was one of the most exciting races I’ve seen in a while. The race started with about 22 drivers, and ended with only 9 running, 3 of whom were involved in crashes earlier in the race. (There may have even been a little too much excitement, as the pace car caught fire in a freak accident!)
And to top it off, a decision I was originally quite miffed about, Richard Childress Racing’s decision to bring the number 3 car, made famous by the late NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, back into the Sprint cup series, has actually come full circle to keep tradition alive. Earnhardt and Childress where best friends who considered each other family. Even though the 3 car is not being driven by an Earnhardt, the car is still ‘in the family’. Sixteen years after Earnhardt won his first and only Daytona 500, the little boy standing next to him in Earnhardt’s victory photo, Richard Childress’s grandson Austin Dillion, will start the Daytona 500 on the pole…. in the number 3 car. The tradition lives on.

And with that tradition, and the excitement I’ve seen so far at Speedweeks, I’m looking forward to the 2014 NASCAR season. This may be the year NASCAR turns it around.

Governor Rick Scott brings in New Transportation to the New Year

Recently in the news, Governor Rick Scott stated that he was going touse over $200 million dollars to add trains to the Orlando International Airport. He is planning to spend this money to build a new station at the OIA that could potentially have multiple trains. This would include a privately financed one that would like Central and South Florida. Scott has stated that he has set aside $123 million in his budget this year and if he was re-elected, he will put the remainder into action. Airport officials last year contacted Scott, seeking more than $200 million from state to build the depot about a mile south of the existing main terminal.

Scott said he is confident the Legislature will approve his request for the airport because the depot will create jobs and increase tourism. Last year, the state attracted a record 94.7 million tourists.

The station also would have space for a potential future spur of the SunRail commuter train scheduled to start operating in May and for one other train, possibly the proposed magnetically levitated system from the airport to the Orange County Convention Center. It seems that this would be a great opportunity not only for the Orlando area but for the State of Florida as well.

NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest 2014: John Wall and the East win with a new controversial format

In a desperate attempt to salvage or possibly reinvigorate the Sprite slam dunk contest this year, the NBA decided to change the format for which the contest was historically known for.  Since its beginning in 1976 the dunk contest has always been in one way or another an individual competition, where the title is ultimately fought over by two finalists.  This year’s format was announced two weeks ago and met with a great amount of skepticism.  The format included three players from each conference would go through a team freestyle round where they would work together to beat the other by means of a 2-1 vote.  The winners of the team round would be able to select a head to head opponent, and the first team to win their 3 matchups would be announced as the 2014 Slam dunk contest champions.  Leaving fans with a team of three as the champions, and a choice to vote on their phones for the Dunker of the night.

John Wall won the dunker of the night with a reverse pump dunk over a person in addition to his teammates Paul George (Indiana), Terence Ross (Toronto, 2013 Champion) helping the East to a win over the West’s Damian Lilliard (Portland), Harrison Barnes (Golden State) and Ben Maclemore (Sacramento).  All competitors showed some extravagant dunks, but the night was overshadowed by the obvious format change and lack of dunks.  The team freestyle round took the isolation out of a good dunk, and seemed to confuse the crowd.  Following that the head to head round was short and sweet for the west, where they were swept in every matchup and you only saw one dunk from each competitor.  In comparison, past dunk contests it has taken up to 8 dunks for a person to win.

The already controversial change was met with immediate negative response from writers, bloggers, and tweeters; most of them described it as “ruined”.  Brian Campbell of ESPN Tweeted “Man, the NBA just can’t help itself trying to ruin the dunk contest more. New rule changes are awful. Just let them dunk. And lose Cannon.”  “Lose Cannon” referring to the contest’s new host Nick Cannon, who is in his own right a new change and was just as awkward as the contest was itself.  Before Ben Gulliver of Sports Illustrated commented on the results of the dunk contest in his article, he began with “NEW ORLEANS — Worst. Fears. Confirmed.”. Referring to the now obvious flop of the changed contest.

Going forward, the NBA will undoubtedly change the format again in response to the bad reviews.  Only time can tell what the future of the dunk contest will be.

The Main Reason Why The First Two Years of College are Pointless.

I attended Valencia community college right after high school and to be honest it was the most pointless decision I made. This has nothing to do with the college itself or the educational value of a bachelors degree but more so with the content.  I enjoyed Valencia and Yes I did in fact save a lot of money transferring to the University of Central Florida but to be honest it was pointless and instead of helping me out i felt more at a loss.

Regardless of whether you attended a four year institution or went to community college first and then transferred over to one, the idea of taking general education courses for two year is absolutely ridiculous. It is especially ridiculous if you just came out of  high school taking four years of those same courses that were supposed to quote on quote prepare you. I attended Valencia college hoping to advance my education at a more efficient and economical price but was left at a personal loss when I transferred to UCF because i did not have a chance to explore different majors until my junior year which i had to of already have decided what i wanted to study.

Two years of General education courses are a waste of time, yes i believe everyone should be required to take one of each subject Math, History, English, Science to have a mutual understanding of the subject but beyond that those four years should be used to a full potential to introduce you with courses that will prepare you for your future career after all that is what college is for right?
