Ritzer & McDonaldization

According to Ritzer irrationality of rationality is that “rational systems are unreasonable systems. By that I mean that they deny the basic humanity, the human reason, of the people who work within or are served by them.” Bad comes with the good. Ritzer notes that there are bad things that come from the rational McDonaldization organization. The drive-up windows are supposed to be efficient, but it takes up our time and doesn’t save us money. With people not having enough time to cook, we often bring home the unhealthy food to our family after a long day at work. The food contributes to America’s increasing problem of obesity. Since we lack time, there isn’t a place for a traditional family dinner. The fast-food industry allows us to eat when we want without having to cook a meal. So, this good idea of a rational system does lead to a negative impact in more than one way.

McDonaldization seems to becoming more prominent in the everyday lives of people in our society. In my day-to-day life, I definitely encounter the process of McDonaldization. When I am on my way to work or even after work, I use the ATM machine at my bank to deposit or take out money. The ATM has had a positive impact because it doesn’t cost me extra at my banking center, it’s quick and simple, faster then going inside to wait in line, and I don’t even have to get out of my car. Another example is when I usually go grocery shopping once a week to get necessities. I have noticed the increase in the self-scanning checkout lines. It may be positive for some people, but I disagree with it. I think that by the nonhuman technology of having customers do it themselves, people are loosing out on jobs since they are being replaced. Therefore, I refuse the use the self-checkout areas. I’d rather wait in line. On my way to work at night, I usually stop at the convenience store to get an energy drink. The convenience store is definitely positive. I don’t have to search a whole grocery store for the one item that I need and I’m in and out in two minutes.

The process of McDonaldization is can be positive or negative depending on the situation. People experience the rational system everyday and are becoming dependent on it. We are a fast paced society and are demanding the rational system without considering the potential negative impacts.
