University Of Central Florida’s views on skateboarding on campus grounds, as told by a skateboarder.

So I work at the local skate shop on campus, Skateboards & Sports, in the John T. Washington Center Breezeway and I have a few things to say about the kids who skateboard on campus.

I LOVE IT.

I have skated a few college campus’ in my day and I have to say that no where else, in my travels, has such a large and diverse skate following as the University of Central Florida. The crisscrossing of skateboarders and the constant sound of “clack clack clack” makes me feel at home. The groups of kids who skate together never break. You can see them traveling to the same destinations, in the same lines everyday.

Skateboards & Sports, the skate shop I mentioned earlier, is not only the official skate shop of the University of Central Florida, but the only skate shop located on a college campus in the nation. You can definitely feel the support for the shop from the continued foot traffic through the door and the word on the street.

This is our second semester on campus and I think we will be here for many more years to come. Hopefully the student body as a whole embraces the shop  and we can continue to grow.

Many students, and teachers alike, feel the opposite of what I do about skateboarders on our university’s campus.

THEY HATE IT.

This is caused by the inconsiderate longboarders who give the rest of the campus’ skateboard community a bad reputation. We are currently spreading awareness about safe skating and “speed limits” on campus.

Hopefully soon skaters and non-skaters can move in harmony around campus.

Dying to play video games? Well, some people have..

What got me started on this topic was a headline regarding a story about a man in Kansas this week. The man woke up in the middle of the night when his house was engulfed by flames. He fled the fire but moments later, he confused fire crews and paramedics when he ran back into the house. He wasn’t trying to save a loved one or a pet. He ran back inside the burning home to save his Xbox! Fortunately the man only suffered smoke inhalation but the fire cause $80,000 worth of damage to his home.

After further reading, it seems like video game addictions have led to many deaths around the world. An 18 year old man in Taiwan died in an internet cafe after playing Diablo 3 for 40 hours straight. He was in a public place and nobody even noticed. Does this worry anybody else?

If 40 hours isn’t long enough, a 33 year old man in China died after 650 hours of continuous video game play. Reports state his diet consisted of small quantities of ramen noodles and he rarely slept. The man’s cause of death was heart failure and malnutrition.

There has also been many cases where video game addictions have not only caused the deaths of the players, but motivated them to murder ‘real life’ family and friends. In Florida in 2010, a woman shook her baby to death because it was crying too loud while she was trying to play Farmville with her friends over Facebook.

If I ever needed an excuse to log off and back away from the computer. This is it.

Rolex 24 Provides Controversial Start to 2014 Racing Season

After 24 hours of racing at the Daytona International Speedway, racing fans came away from the 2014 Rolex 24 with a somewhat-sour taste in their mouths. Despite a late charge by Wayne Taylor Racing’s Max Angelelli, Action Express Racing’s Joao Barbosa led the #5 Corvette Daytona Prototype to the team’s second overall Rolex 24 win. The inaugural race for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship (TUSCC) came down to a late race 10 minute sprint after a questionable yellow for Leh Keen’s #22 WeatherTech Porsche 911 GT America hitting a tire barrier. However, the controversies were not limited to the late race yellow.

Much of the talk leading up to the inaugural TUSCC race was the balance of performance between Daytona and Le Mans prototypes at the series’ most prestigious event. Or rather the imbalance. Despite efforts by sanctioning body IMSA, DPs held nearly a second advantage in qualifying and took nine out of the top ten spots. The race proved to hold the same speed disadvantage for the LMP cars as DPs swept the top four positions and a total of zero laps were led by the LMP teams. The highest finishing LMP was Muscle Milk Pickett Racing’s #6 Nissan ORECA in 4th position. Early favorite Gainsco Racing’s #99 Corvette Prototype of Memo Gidley was knocked out early by a viscous crash with the #66 GT Le Mans Ferrari of Matteo Malucelli that ultimately sent both drivers to the hospital and stopped the race for roughly 40 minutes. After the red flag period the night time showed Action Express’ #5 and #9 and Wayne Taylor Racing’s #10 prototypes as the favorites for the overall win with Chip Ganassi Racing’s #02 Ford Riley DP briefly leading during the night before mechanical issues struck the defending race winners. The final 25 lead changes were between the Action Express and Wayne Taylor Racing cars before the #5 Corvette DP took the lead for the final 35 laps with Barbosa behind the wheel. Despite Angelelli’s best efforts to catch Barbosa, Angelelli’s second Rolex 24 win and owner Wayne Taylor’s third as a driver, the Italian ace ultimately came up 1.461 seconds short of the overall win.

GT Le Mans in it’s Daytona debut ultimately had a duel between #911 Porsche RSR and #55 BMW Team RLL BMW Z4 GTE decided by slower traffic with two laps to go during the final sprint. Unveiling their new C7.R for the first time in endurance racing competition, Corvette Racing faced motor overheating and a transmission bearing failure for their #3 and #4 cars, respectively. The SRT Viper GTS-R #91 and #93 cars faced issues as well with steering failures and front bodywork damage knocking them from contention during the night. After the usual tumultuous Daytona night ended, the only two cars remaining on the lead lap were the #911 Porsche and #55 BMW Z4. Joey Hand attempted a late charge to the back of Patrick Pilet’s factory-backed Porsche but fell short during the final 10 minute run to the checkers.

The Prototype Challenge class, running at Daytona and a 24 hour event for the first time, was won by CORE Autosport after Jon Bennett spun the car from pole on the first lap. Sports car veteran Colin Braun helped bring the #54 ORECA FLM09 from last after the first lap spin up to eventually gapping the PC field by a lap late in the race. PC was the only class to not have multiple cars on the lead lap at the finish of the race.

The slowest of the four classes, GT Daytona, proved to have the most controversial finish at the Rolex 24. With a field spread by less than two seconds in qualifying, GTD easily held the title of most competitive class in the field. Several cars led GTD throughout the 24 hours of running but the finish came down to the #555 Level 5 Motorsports Ferrari F458 GT and #45 Flying Lizard Audi R8 LMS battling after the late restart. Contact between the two in the bus stop chicane damaged the #45 Flying Lizard and appeared to be the end of the lead battle until a mistake by Alesandro Pier Guidi in the bus stop allowed Markus Winkelhock to close in on the final lap. Entering the high-speed left-hand kink in the infield section of the course, an outside move by the Lizard didn’t stick and resulted in the #45 flying off into the grass along with the end of the battle for the lead. Then began the confusion after IMSA’s race director issued a stop-and-go plus 75 penalty for avoidable to the #555 Level 5 car after the finish, effectively nullifying the team’s win by adding 75 seconds to the #555’s finishing time and giving the win to the Flying Lizard team. However, the decision was overturned after the celebrations with the win being returned to Level 5 after IMSA officials determined no contact was involved in the incident in the kink.

Ukraine in Jeopardy But the United States Media is focused on trivial things

In our media, all i have been hearing about is how Justin Bieber is getting arrested for being an idiot, Miley Cyrus and her stupidity, and everything else happening in pop culture. But over seas Ukraine is basically dealing with a civil war about to break out. What bothers me is I had to find this out after seeing a comment on a blog saying “no one knows whats going on in the Ukraine but Bieber gets arrested and it makes front page news.”

To give you the short version of whats going on the Ukraine was supposed to sign an agreement that was going to make them part of the European Alliance. But do to some pressure from Russia, the Ukrainian government back out of the agreement. within last week the Ukrainian Government had instated anti protest laws. People who were for the European agreement started to protest when things turned violent.

Police started using anti-riot weapons such as tear gas and riot shields to disperse the protesters when the protesters retaliated and all hell broke loose. People are dying, the government have been erecting barriers, and worse of all Ukrainians are literally fighting and killing each other over this conflict. The situation has been completely out of control and yet I have not seen one report from the united states on it.

I understand if we don’t want to get involved with the politics in another country but at least inform the public on what is going on. I could literally careless about Justin Bieber’s stupidity when human lives are being lost brutally. I believe that takes precedence over what is going on in pop culture, when people are dying.

Here is the article from BBC so that people can get more familiar with the situation. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25876807

Pepsi renames product lines to avoid legal issues.

When we go to the supermarket, there are thousands of options to choose from when buying groceries. With so many products on the shelves, companies often look for creative ways to differentiate themselves from competitors. In the past few years americans have started caring more about what they eat. In response to this companies constantly feature new “healthy” alternative products to attract consumers. PepsiCo, who owns frito-lay recently had recently put out a new line of products branded “simply natural”. They add labels like this to their cheetos and other snacks to attract consumers by leading them to believe they are eating healthy. The problem is there is no clear laws about what constitutes a “natural” product. These matters  are handled by the FDA, which has stated that a natural product doesn’t contain “added color, artificial flavors or synthetic substances”. When food products have the “natural” label and don’t meet the qualifications of a natural product, the companies producing them are hit with lawsuits from consumers.

While i find it hard to believe that anyone buying cheetos believes they are eating something that is “natural”, i’m glad to see companies being penalized for their misleading marketing. Many of the products we consume contain chemicals, preservatives and a bunch of synthetic additives. A lot of us have no idea that many of the products we perceive as “healthy” are really just well marketed junk food. Hopefully in the future, food manufactures will bring out new products that actually are healthy and natural; that way they at least won’t have to lie to us.

300 Become ill on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

With the new year already heading into the end of January, seasons will begin to transition from winter to spring prompting new vacation plans and weekend get-a-ways for the spring season. Royal Caribbean International, a premier cruise liner, is in the headlines for the first time in a while for something not so royal. More than 300 people comprised of crew members and passengers reported symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. According to CNN Reports, those affected by the illness were treated with over-the-counter medication and have responded well to the treatment. Explorer of the Seas left Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on January 21 and was scheduled to make stops in St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

The Explorer of the Seas was expected to make a stop in Haiti but had to skip the stop and proceed to San Juan, Puerto Rico to undergo extensive cleaning and sanitizing. The illness has yet to be identified by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) but after an in-depth investigation hopefully the unknown norovirus will be identified.

The cruise liner industry has also been impacted by the recent docking of the Norwegian Cruise Liner, Norwegian Star, after an unidentified illness was found on that ship which sailed from January 5 – January 19, 2014 according to the CDC.

With the spring season fastly approaching, the industry may be affected by the increase of at-sea illnesses on board these cruise ships. In hopes of retaining customers, Royal Caribbean International, will most likely lower rates for customers to appeal to their cruises for the upcoming seasons. Sanitation efforts will also be likely increase in order to prevent future illness aboard the cruises throughout the Caribbean.

AMC Movie Theater Hates Google Glass

In Columbus, Ohio at the AMC Theater Federal Agents escorted a man out of the Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit movie for wearing Google Glasses. The man told the Agents that he had turned off the glasses, but kept them on because they were also his prescription glasses. This was the third time the person had brought his Google Glasses to the theater and never had an issue with the employees. He even had the AMC employees ask him questions about the glasses when buying tickets and food. The man was interrogated for about three hours being questioned about the incident. They finally let him go after they asked him multiple questions and then finally checked the glasses and his cell phone for any video recordings and found none. For the inconvenience the AMC manager gave him extra passes for his troubles.

This incident makes you wonder who was at fault. When we go the theater the understanding is to not bring in or turn on a recording device into the room. The costumer didn’t have the glasses on, but they were still visible to the public.  I believe he should have had an extra pair of glasses on him since he knew he was going to watch a movie since the device can record. When you go to any screener of a film they ask you to put your phone/recording device away and not to take it out during the film. This would also include Google Glasses, so the costumer should have known better to not have them on. It was wrong of the Agents to withhold the costumer for so many hours when they could have just checked his devices first before asking him multiple questions.

With Google Glass, You can Watch Porn Anywhere

The porn industry is a multi-billionaire dollar industry. People just absolutely love their porn. However, technology is advancing exponentially, and the fat cats of porn are going to have to be pretty innovative if they want to adapt to the constant change of the this technological environment.

Google Glass, is a new product that is being developed that allows consumers to access the internet, take pictures, store music, and pretty much anything any modern smart phone could do. However, it is hands free and responds to vocal commands. This optical device  will display everything in 4K Ultra HD and according to an article from the HuffingtonPost.com titled “Google Glass May be the Future of the Porn Industry,” the author, Susan Abram, states that 4K Ultra HD has “four times as many pixels” in comparison to the standard HD.

Many people like to view porn privately. Google Glass provides a medium in which porn can be viewed privately and allows a more intimate connection. Also, porn stars, can also direct and film the scenes and provide a first-person perspective. However there are many legal issues that surround Google Glass and there is a lot of red tape that has to be sorted in order for it to be available to the public. Also, the battery life may be a drawback for consumers and pornography producers because it isn’t that strong. That could develop overtime as technology improves and the demand increases. Google Glass will allow porn to be more visually stimulating and personal. These added bonuses are sure to create demand.

Justin Bieber Drunk Drag Racing in Miami Leads to Arrest

It’s been seen time and time again. For some reason celebrities tend to view themselves as invulnerable and above the law. The prime example of this scenario is Justin Bieber following the recent events that took place in Miami Beach, FL.

Aside from driving drunkenly, Bieber was charged with resisting arrest and driving without a valid license. The entire situation reminds me of an anonymous poem that was implanted into my mind through years of Red Ribbon Week assemblies known as “Death of an Innocent.” Sure, Bieber certainly did not kill anyone, but the irresponsibility of his actions easily could have ended in such a tragic way. The darkest part of this whole debacle is not so much the actions that took place, but the millions of “Belibers” who stood by the offender. This led to the trending of “Free Bieber” on social media sites using the “everyone makes mistakes” excuse to justify his actions. Would people still stand by their “hero” if the events had taken a darker turn?

As a person who has become so influential to the young adult community, one would assume that Bieber would try to use his fame for good. Perhaps he should take his role model status and channel it into positivity. With so many people looking to Bieber as a moral ground, which is certainly a mistake, the 19-year old has several responsibilities to uphold and, as of now, he’s going down a dark and self-destructive path. So with millions of “Beliebers” out there looking to Bieber for this support and understanding of the way the world works, should he not be trying harder to respect the law? If so many people are willing to support Justin Bieber and he’s not willing to uphold the responsibilities that come with fame where does that leave his followers?

The power of the professor, is it too much?

Now a days professors seem to care too little about the impact of their decisions on your grades and more about whether or not you follow every little tedious guideline they instruct. It’s almost like a machine churning up grade point averages or a computer doing redundant tasks. Where did the care for the students’ success go? Makes you wonder.

I feel professors have too much power over not only the grades they give you, but the way they treat you. I believe this happens when they achieve tenure. It’s like freedom from all the worries of being an upstanding professor and no more concern with what the student might do if rubbed the wrong way. Tenure is a process that is achieved from years, sometimes 10 years, of exhibiting academic success through the students they happen to teach, along with volunteering at the campus and research projects among other things. But is tenure really a good thing? Lets take a look.

Like I stated above, tenure is achieved through a rigorous feat and application process. When you receive tenure, a couple of things happen. It becomes virtually impossible to fire a professor, although it can be done. A professor is no longer held to a standard of teaching, that means you can act or teach or spread whatever opinion you so very well please. You have the up most authority over your grading process and you basically are allowed to make your own teaching agenda. Now that’s just the beginning. Does having tenure directly effect the way you teach? It doesn’t have to.

I think when you are no longer held to any set of standards, you begin to lose interest in what or how you teach. Gaining tenure is a long rigorous project on it’s own, and just being able to teach as a professor takes years of education itself. So by the time you even reach tenure, you have gone through maybe 16 years of crap. Yes I said crap. So you might also ask yourself, “but if someone goes through 16 years of crap to get to a point of tenure, isn’t it a good thing to have job security?” My answer has to be no. I can choose to go to school for 12 years and then do a residence for another 4 years to be a doctor and I wouldn’t get job security. Why should teachers? But that’s really not the point I am trying to make.

I am sick and tired of having my grade point average loom above me because of some professors who seemingly don’t give a hoot about it or how he or she might affect your academic progress. How many students have heard the ole’ tired threat of “I can have you kicked out of your major!”? I know I have, at least from 3 professors. What does that say? Too much power, not enough concern. It is hard enough as it is to even get into college, and then your major of choice, and they know this. Then on top of that, if a professor wants to kick you out you have to go through the process of appealing that argument. You do. Not the professor, but you. If you want to challenge a grade you have to go through the process of appealing that grade. You do. Not the professor, but you. So what do most students do? Give up, because it seems too hard or they just don’t know what to do.

So what would be the easiest way to alleviate this issue that we all go though? Get rid of tenure. Maybe it will bring back the life in professors, the passion to teach, the will to care about their students instead of just being another face. If it doesn’t then fire those professors. Either that or tenure should be divided into blocks of years, like 4 year tenure blocks. Then after four years, you get reevaluated. That way you get the job security but you also keep the passion. I mean heck, even the president is replaced every four years.

With that being said, I challenge my fellow student body to think about this and take action if you feel like you have been treated a certain way. This isn’t a call to arms to start a uprising against professors or the people in authority but just a call for concern. We as students are the number one entity that not only funds this or any other college, but funds the professors salary, sports programs, the SGA, and anything else you can probably think of. So I’m just saying be aware and be concerned with how you are treated. Because you have a right to be.
