Ohio State University Acquires Military Vehicle

When one thinks of campus police, the images called to mind are usually of normal cops who drive squad cars with a bit of school spirit on them.  A giant tank-esque armored Humvee deluxe vehicle is usually not among the images called to mind.  In fact, in my mind it’s about as far away as, oh say, Iraq.  But this is no longer the case at Ohio State University.  The campus police force there has recently acquired a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, or MRAP, from the United States military.  This large and heavy duty vehicle is designed to protect patrolling soldiers from ambush attacks and roadside bombs.  It was designed specifically to combat insurgencies, such as the ones that the army battled in Iraq and Afghanistan– taking into account their methods of attack and their unpredictability.

So what use is this vehicle to the campus police force?  According to campus police chief Paul Denton, it will be used in any emergency situations that require a lot of force.  These include bomb threats, hostage situations, and active shooter situations.  But what is the real reason that the school has this vehicle?  As it turns out, the army doesn’t really need them anymore.  These vehicles were designed for combating insurgencies very specifically, but when the army is not fighting insurgencies, they are impractical and not of much use.  There are over twenty-thousand MRAPS scattered over the middle east that the army is not entirely sure what to do with.  As a result, some are being shipped back and stored, donated as is the case with Ohio State, or even left for scrap (the cheapest option).

This is a Blog About Me Venting About Life

So this weekend for me starts on a Wednesday like it does for many other people. I can’t wait to go home for Thanksgiving. I’m going to be driving my car, Carmen Elantra with my friends Tulio and Vanessa. I can’t wait to see my little sister and spend time with my mom and my dad and all of my friends from back home that I don’t get to see as often as I’d like. We’re going to have Thanksgiving dinner and then a Friendsgiving dinner with all the peeps. Also, it’s the weekend before I have to start studying for finals so I’m going to get live with my friends before than and hopefully I’ll get a little Black Friday shopping in.
There’s more “juicy” things that are going on this weekend but I probably shouldn’t blog my whole life away so that everyone can read it. I’ve never been a Tumblr kind of girl. There’s a secret that I have been keeping from everyone that lives back home so hopefully nobody finds out, they most likely wont. I think it’s the first secret I’ve kept like this, ever before. There’s a first time for everything. Thing is with me and most girls out there, I have to make the same mistake like 4 or 5 times, you know, just in case. That doesn’t apply too much with my secret, it just applies in general with some things that have been happening lately. Actually, not that I think of it, it applies to both.
This has by far been the most scandalous semester that I have had in college. I’m glad I’m actually getting through it. Right now, right after I finish this blog I am going to set up a cute dinner date with Molly and Tulio for Darin and Vanessa because it’s their one year anniversary, we’re such good friends, we know. I’ve been pretty happy lately, I really can’t complain. There’s a couple things that have been complicated but that’s everyone’s life, I presume. I am thankful that I get to go back home soon, that I quit my job and that the semester is finally ending and I get to take a break from all the struggles of school for a little bit. Wow, this is almost like venting to a friend. Well, it’s been nice talking to you, computer screen. Until next time.

Migraine Surgery on the Rise

Coming from a person who has occasional migraines, such as right now and for the past two days, seeing that migraine surgery is on the rise makes me wonder.  Does all of the technology we are surrounded with everyday play a factor in our migraines?  I definitely think it does.  I mean it can’t all be fun and games, there’s always a side effect.  According to CNN, thirty-six million Americans suffer from migraines. As that number increases, so does the number of those who are trying to correct the issue by undergoing migraine surgery.

This surgery success appeared to happen by accident.  Apparently plastic surgeons  in Cleveland noticed that some patients would return after having a brow lift saying that their migraines were gone.  This led to some experiments and tests and the conclusion was that it only works on some patients.  The first step is to evaluate whether or not someone is a good candidate.  This means surgeons will inject botox or lidocaine into the likely trigger points for the headaches and see if it alleviates any of the pain.  If that injection does indeed help, plastic surgeons believe “the operation could be a more permanent fix.”

Although I wouldn’t consider resorting to surgery at this point in time, I may consider it further down the road depending on how bad my headaches continue to be.  Growing up, I used to suffer from really bad migraines at least twice a year, but now it appears to be once a month, sometimes every week.  As painful and distracting as it can be, I have to carry on with my everyday life.  Disoriented or not, I should start limiting my use of technology and see if that has any effect.

The future of transportation in magnetic levitation; trains capable of averaging 300mph

Magnetic levitation or maglev for short is the system of making a vehicle, more frequently than not a train, hover over the ‘track’ and travel by the use of magnets. Magnetic levitation has the potential to move trains more quickly and more quietly than traditional wheel-based trains. Surprisingly, most of the power consumed is used to overcome wind resistance at high speed, not to keep the train suspended in mid-air.

The most flourishing maglev train in operation nowadays runs to Shanghai airport like the British one ran to Birmingham Airport. However, the resemblance between the two stops there. The British maglev travelled at up to 26 mph, whereas the Chinese, but German built, maglev runs at a peak speed of 160 mph.

A lot of the early research and development was carried out in Britain by Professor Eric Laithwaite from after the Second World War to 1973, but Germany is the foremost influence on the maglev train now, even though Germany is working closely with the Chinese and the Japanese to advance the technology.

One of the main stumbling blocks for maglev trains is infrastructure. Maglev trains are incompatible with traditional rail rack so they have nowhere to go. Laying new maglev track is not hideously costly, but it is dear and would involve having two sets of incompatible rails running alongside each other for several decades, which would naturally take up two times as much land. Japan has just agreed on plans to lay out their very own maglev train and they are currently in talks with the US to help them potentially finance a maglev train from D.C. to New York.

Stars Lit Up the American Music Awards

Last night, Sunday November 24th, was the annual American Music Awards. Pitbull, also known as Mr. 305, hosted the ceremony, but it was the performances and winners that stole the show.

Justin Timberlake certainly returned to music in an incredibly successful way. He continues to be loved and respected by all those in the industry as the prince of pop. Timberlake took home the awards for favorite pop/rock male artist, favorite soul/R&B male artist, and favorite soul/R&B album. Every time he was on stage, he was debonair, funny and very humble, making girls swoon everywhere.

Lady Gaga and R. Kelly performed their song, “Do what U want” as Kelly impersonated the President and Gaga played Marilyn Monroe. Lady Gaga acted as Marilyn beautifully and danced on the President’s desk as he looked up, admiring her. Their relationship was leaked on Instagram and the “President” stormed out right as he was being questioned by reporters. It was a cute take on the idea that celebrities lives are rarely ever private.

Rihanna won the very first Icon award. It is the recognition that this person has been very successful in the music industry and is “the voice of our time”, said Bill Mahar when he introduced her to the stage. Rihanna’s mother presented her with the actual trophy, with a heartfelt speech about how proud she was of her 25 year old daughter.

Miley Cyrus closed the show with her performance singing “Wrecking Ball”. She was dressed in her usual crop top and high waisted bottoms that rode completely up her crotch. What surprised viewers was the huge animated cat lip singing the song behind her. There was no “twerking” at this award show, but it was still very entertaining.

Death Grips Releases New Album For Free

Experimental hip-hop group Death Grips leaked their fourth studio album, Government Plates, to the world earlier this month. All the tracks were posted by the band on multiple online sources and made available to download for free.

Death Grips is the effort of rapper Stefan Burnett (better known by his stage name MC Ride), drummer Zach Hill and producer Andy Morin. The group makes hip-hop music that incorporates elements of electronic, industrial, noise and other non-traditional genres. MC Ride’s experimental vocals are a mixture of shouting and emotional raps. The lyrical content of their music addresses social issues and the pervasiveness of technology and government into people’s lives among other subjects.

After forming in Sacramento, California, and releasing their first mixtape “Exmilitary” in 2011 the group was signed to Epic Records. Their sophomore release “The Money Store” gathered widespread acclaim from music publications and online blogs, making Death Grips a well-known name in the music industry. After a dispute with the record label Death Grips released their third full-length album “No Love Deep Web” for free online and were subsequently dropped from Epic.

Most recently the band released their newest album “Government Plates” seemingly out of nowhere. The band made the album along with a music video for every song available online earlier this month. The new album includes many elements that Death Grips fans will be familiar with including Ride’s harsh vocal style and the bands abrasive instrumental production. The 11-track album includes the song “Birds”, which was released as a single over the summer. “Government Plates” was self-released by the band on their label Third Worlds, a partnership with Harvest/Capitol Records, and is available for download on their official website. Check it out!

Xbox One Aims to Redefine How We Interact with Media

This past Friday saw the launch of the Xbox One video game console in the US.  However, it doesn’t feel quite fair to simply refer to the Xbox One as a “video game console”; the Xbox One is much more than that, or at least for the time being, aims to be much more than that.  The console aims to be the main hub in your home through which you consume all of your media.

The Xbox One is an extremely powerful machine that has a built-in Kinect.  If you’re not familiar with the Kinect technology, it’s essentially a camera+microphone combo built into the system that is able to track motion with a pretty good degree of accuracy, and also respond to voice commands from the user.  Microsoft’s goal when creating the XB1 was to make it something that would be essential for any good home media set-up.  If you so choose, you’ll be able to control all of your media (be it DVD or blu-ray player, cable/satellite box, etc) through the system, and Microsoft is especially hoping you’ll do that with the voice recognition technology of the Kinect.  With just the sound of your voice, you can have the XB1 change the channel, bring up picture-in-a-picture, Skype a friend, etc.  The possibilities are truly endless, and the technology is certainly exciting as it adds just another hands-on layer to our already rapidly expanding technological world.  As expected, at launch the console has a few issues that need to be ironed out before it’s a viable option to completely take over one’s home media set-up, but once the issues are completely fixed and the Xbox One is running at its full potential, the living rooms of many will be completely wowed by just how much the machine can do.

The New Look Detroit Pistons Strive For The Playoffs

After a few dismal seasons, the Detroit Pistons are looking to improve this season and land a spot in the playoffs. In the early 2000’s the Pistons looked like they had a dynasty in the making. Their franchise was centered around players like Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, and Richard Hamilton. Old age caught up to these players, and the Pistons were left wondering what to do with the roster. A successful offseason for the Pistons has given the city of Detroit some hope for this upcoming season.

The biggest move of the summer for the Pistons was signing free agent Josh Smith. Josh Smith is a power forward and a super athletic defender. He needs to improve his outside shot, but season by season he has been improving. The Atlanta Hawks decided not to sign Smith to a contract extension, so Detroit signed Smith to a long term deal. The Pistons also acquired Brandon Jennings from the Bucks for Brandon Knight and Khris Middleton. Coming out of high school, Jennings was projected to be an NBA superstar. While Jennings is a quality professional, he hasn’t lived up to the hype just yet. Playing for the Pistons will give Jennings a new opportunity to revive his career.

The Pistons have a prime opportunity to land a top 5 playoff spot in the eastern conference this season. Detroit has 2 quality big men in Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe, both of which are very young players. The only potential problem for the Pistons this year would be a lack of veteran leadership, since they are one of the youngest teams in the league. It will be interesting to see whether or not the Detroit Pistons can make the leap to championship contender this season.

Is Apple entering into the world of video games?

Microsoft’s Xbox introduced its Kinect a couple years ago and it rejuvenated the Xbox. Kinect let user be interactive with the games they played giving them a totally new gamming experience. Yesterday Apple, Microsoft’s biggest competitor, finalized the purchase of PrimeSense, which is the Israel-based company who produces the Kinect unit for the Xbox. Apple paid a reported $360 million for the company. With this purchase a lot of people are now trying to figure out what Apple is going to do now that they own a company that makes this type of sensing technology.

Apple released a statement that said “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans”, while PrimeSense declined to speak to the press about the buy out. A lor of technology guru’s suggest that Apple wont be using the sensing technology to make a gaming console to compete with Microsoft, but that they are going to use the technology to make Apple TV and other Apple products more fun to use. Other rumors are saying that Apple is going to be using the technology to bring out products that are truly different. One would be the TV set that apple has had in the works for a couple years now. Another suggestion was that Apple could maybe making a smart watch that works with their iPhone just like Samsung and their smart watch that works with the Galaxy line of smartphones. Some people just think that nothing will come out of this buy out.

Traditional Thanksgiving is Antiquated: Black Friday Takes Over

Thanksgiving is a national holiday that has been celebrated since 1621 when the Pilgrims shared the autumn feast with the Wampanoag Native Americans.  It is a holiday that has been somewhat skewed since its origins.  Families still celebrate the traditional Thanksgiving feast with friends and family, but a good majority of Americans go through the motions of Thanksgiving dinner to get to the real festivities, also known as Black Friday.

Ever since the 1920’s the day after Thanksgiving has officially marked the holiday sales season in shops.  The term “black” Friday refers to the day after Thanksgiving when the shops move from red to black in terms of sales.  Storeowners have always wanted more time to sell and advertise sales, with intent to get more sales revenue during the season, but they did not want to encroach on Thanksgiving Day.  In recent years Black Friday sales have started earlier and earlier and gone on longer and longer.  Allowing more people to partake in the shopping festivities and feel as though they are receiving the biggest bang for their buck.

Black Friday has always had a negative connotation to it.  Police in Philadelphia officially coined the term “black Friday” in the 1960’s when referring to the congestion of pedestrians and traffic.  As popularity for the shopping event grows, so too does the infamy associated with it.  Not only do stores jack up prices and then lower them to appear as sale price but also customers become volatile and belligerent.  In 2008 an employee at Wal-Mart opened the doors at 5 o’clock am, Black Friday morning to a crowd of over 2,000.  He was trampled to death and when help attempted to reach him, they too were injured.  The tradition of Thanksgiving is becoming antiquated and Black Friday is taking its place.
