A Cure For Baldness May Have Been Found

Personal care products and services generate billions of dollars a year as we use our resources to improve our looks and our bodies. We naturally fight the aging process that sooner or later will be unkind to every person. For men, one of the most difficult changes to deal with is the loss of hair. There are so many products out there, but none of them can truly bring back hair that the body has stopped producing. Now, it seems that we are on the verge of revolutionizing how fading hair can be regrown.

Human hair grows out as cells beneath the surface push dead skin cells out, a process known as neogenesis. Hair loss occurs when the papillae that control this process stop working. In order to fix this, scientists have found a way to remove a pupillae and use it to reprogram cells around it to produce hair. With enough pupillae in many different places, full and normal hair growth occurs.

Before this discovery, the most common method for hair growth was transplant, taking the hair from another part of the body and placing it on the head. This new process avoids that hassle, and instead of covering up it actually regrows new hair.

With the popularity of self care and baldness treatment out there now, this finding has major consequences for the future. Baldness, although a harmless ailment, is one of the most frustrating problems for many men today. It will be interesting to see how this affects the look of society in the future.

Living in a Technological World That Never Ceases to Grow, Especially Cell-phones, Making Older Technology Obsolete

Last week I walked into a store and I saw a small flip phone on sale. It had a really good price, but for a moment I thought: who wants a flip phone? Today when most of the people carry smart phones, who wants to be the owner of a small phone? These phones are only to make phone calls.
I realize that time is running so fast and we are getting old, and technology is advancing at a pace that does not even allow us to stop and appreciate the comfort in which we are living today. It was not a long time ago when not every house had a phone. There were just a couple of phones in a neighborhood, and when it was necessary people had to go to the closest business and pay to make a phone call.
Years later more homes had access to land line phones. It was not until the middle eighties when cell- phones become available. The first cell-phones were big, heavy and expensive. Just ten years ago a cell-phone’s main job was just to make phone calls, once in a while to send a text message. Today we can see even elementary school children carrying their own smart phones, or cell-phones.
As times goes by, technology continues to advance in ways we could never imagine. Cell-phones, which were once used to just make phone calls, are now being used as small computers on the go. It is incredible to even imagine what the future holds for our technological devices

Latest Nevada School Shooting Reignites National Debate over Gun Control

Earlier on October 21st, a 12-year-old middle school student pulled out a semi-automatic handgun, then preceded to wound two classmates before shooting his math teacher and ultimately killing himself.  The chaotic scene occurred at a Nevada middle school in the northwestern town of Sparks. Up-to 200 police officers arrived at the scene moments after the incident to assist in evacuations and begin investigating the tragedy. The 45-year-old math teacher, Michael Landsberry, was announced dead, but fortunately the two wounded students were rushed to the nearest hospital where they currently remain in stable condition. It’s likely the shooter obtained the handgun from his parents.

Following the incident, it becomes easy to cite the lack of gun control legislation as the sole root cause behind this shooting. The local and federal governments are likely to take another run at comprehensive gun control, including a universal background check. Though, there has already been heavy political efforts towards gun regulations, but the problem is that many do not make it very far due to the Second Amendment. Last June, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval vetoed a proposed gun legislation act that garnered the admiration of many powerful gun lobbyists. In the Northwest, the uphill battle towards gun control shows many positive signs in Washington state, where Initiative 594 calls for universal background checks on gun sales. The initiative was supported by 250,000 supporters in an “unprecedented grass roots petition.” Lawmakers must adopt the measure in 2014 or it will ultimately be decided by voters later in the year. Of course, this is just one isolated example on the movement towards stricter gun control laws. The latest Nevada tragedy is sure to bring up the heated debate to several more states, including Nevada itself, because the question on everyone’s mind is “how many more school shootings can America take?”

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” Causes Controversy

Every Sunday night at 9 p.m. eastern, the hit show “The Walking Dead” airs on AMC.  Last night, a bit of a controversial issue occurred throughout the episode.  As the group was being surrounded by more and more “walkers,” the leader, Rick, had to sacrifice the piglets he had spent time feeding and raising.  It became a matter of sacrificing their future food for their current lives, and that was a risk that he was not willing to take.  The piglets were immobilized and then thrown out to the “walkers” to move them away from the groups location.  As the piglets squealed in pain and terror, audience members (including myself) were wincing in heartbreak.  We all felt bad for the innocent piglets and were nearly drawn to tears because of it.

It’s an unfortunate thing to admit to, but when it comes to television shows and/or movies, most people tend to feel more distraught and upset when an animal is hurt or killed over a human being.  This doesn’t necessarily cause anyone to question our character, but rather deepens our thought processes on why that is the case.  I still to this day never quite understand why I always feel more upset when an animal is killed.  It’s also a bit of a reliever to know that several others can relate to my reactions.  I believe that although we interact with humans everyday, this is proof that we feel a more emotional and loving connection with animals over our own kind.  This discussion caused a bit of controversy over the latest “Walking Dead” episode, but hasn’t affected the show’s viewings.

Hungarian Festival Brings Culture and Cuisine to Sarasota

Over the weekend the city of Sarasota, FL hosted it’s 7th annual Hungarian Culture Festival at the Ringling fairgrounds.

Admission was $10 to enter the festival where visitors got to experience a little piece of Hungary. Food vendors sold items made in Hungary or made especially for Hungarian cuisine including a number of Hungarian pastries, dried and deli meats, regional spices and produce. If a visitor wasn’t interested in buying ingredients there was also food being served at the event.

A group of older Hungarian women worked beneath a long white tent to prepare and serve a number of traditional Hungarian dishes. Food choices included pastas and mashed potatoes, wiener schnitzel, pork and sauerkraut, Hungarian meatloaf, lecho, and a handful of other foods. Visitors were also offered a variety of Hungarian beers on draft and Hungarian wines. Entrance to the festival included a ticket for a free drink.

Tables with green, red, and white tablecloths (the colors of the Hungarian flag) were set up for patrons to eat as though they were in a dining hall. At the far end of the tables there was a stage where groups of musicians performed traditional and modern Hungarian music. One band performed traditional songs with an upright bass, two violins, and a cello. A DJ played club music with Hungarian lyrics.

A raffle was held and prizes donated by local Hungarian business were given away including a couple bottles of wine, t-shirts, and books on the country of Hungary.

The atmosphere of the event was one of jovial celebration as the people of Sarasota got to know what it was like to be Hungarian, if only for a day.

NCAAF: UCF Upsets Undefeated Eighth Ranked Louisville on the Road

The UCF football team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to take on the undefeated Cardinals on Friday night. This matchup was very significant because the two schools are in the same conference, and a win here would put the winning team ahead of the other in terms of a Bowl game selection. To make the game even more important, it happened to be the Cardinals’ Homecoming game. Not many people outside of the Central Florida area expected UCF to win this game seeing how they weren’t even ranked up until this point, and were playing the eighth best team in the nation.

The game started off close, but Louisville soon began to dominate the game. By the middle of the third quarter, Louisville had a commanding 28-7 lead over the Knights. But nstead of giving up and calling it a game, UCF kept fighting. The Knights went on to score three touchdowns in a little over seven minutes to tie the game. After stopping the Louisville offense yet again, The Knights kicked a field goal to take a 31-28 lead with seven minutes left in the game. Louisville still had plenty of time to drive down the field for a chance at a field goal or a game winning touchdown, and the Cardinals did just that. Louisville scored a touchdown, making the score 35-31 with only three minutes remaining in the game.

On the plus side, Lousiville left a good amount of time on the clock for one last UCF drive. Knights’ Quarterback Blake Bortles took the field planning to lead the Knights down the field for a game winning touchdown drive. After 10 plays, UCF drove 70 yards down the field and found themselves on goal line with less than a minute left in the game. On Third Down and Goal, Bortles rolled out towards his right and hit Jeff Godfrey in the back of the end zone for the game winning touchdown. The win went down as the biggest victory in UCF History, and got the Knights ranked as the 21st best team in the nation.

Macy’s Will Be Open On Thanksgiving For The First Time

For the first time in its history, Macy’s will open on Thanksgiving. Macy’s Inc., which is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, says that it will open the majority of its stores on the holiday, breaking its well-known tradition of being closed for the holidays.

Macy’s has decided to open on Thanksgiving due to the pressure the chain is facing from its rivals as well as online merchants who make massive sales from holiday deals. Last week Monday, Macy’s Inc. issued a release that the store will open its doors at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving day and will remain open for 24 hours straight and will close around 10 p.m. on Friday.

Last year, Macy’s opened at midnight right after Thanksgiving. In addition, Macy’s has cited an increasing demand to open earlier from shoppers. There are about 800 Macy’s stores and about 750 of the store locations will be open at 8 p.m.

Macy’s said that it began planning early for the event in order to allow its employees the time and opportunity to look over available shifts through the holiday season, including Thanksgiving weekend. This enabled employees to volunteer for the shifts they would not mind working.

Macy’s Thanksgiving deals will include coffee makers for $9.99 and five-piece luggage sets for $49.99. Other stores that have opened on Thanksgiving in the past include Wal-Mart, Target and Gap.

I can definitely believe that Macy’s feels the need to open on Thanksgiving day due to online competition. Whenever I check my email on a holiday, it is bombarded with sales and deals from several online retailers.

Saving the Baltimore Ravens

There is no denying that the Baltimore Ravens have had a rocky season thus far. Their recent loss to rivals Pittsburgh Steelers instilled a whirlwind of disappointment for Ravens fans (considering the Steelers went into the game 1-4). So as we approach week 8 of the NFL season, I have to wonder: Is there hope left for the Ravens?

The Ravens have always been a predominately defense team, primarily because of Ray Lewis’ major contribution of linebacker from 1996-2012. That was then though and the Ravens now seem to be looking to settle back into their defensive roots.

If only it was that easy though. Terrell Suggs was doing a terrific job, but that obviously wasn’t enough to stop the Steelers from winning. What has made the Ravens a good team besides the actual skill level of the players, is the unity that exists between the team.

The players have always just sort of fit together like a puzzle. This season, there seems to be numerous pieces of that puzzle missing and because of that, the Ravens aren’t meshing together.

Obviously football is not about how well a team gets along together, but it sure doesn’t help the game either. A team does better when they come together and for some reason, that hasn’t happened yet this season.

When it comes to ‘fixing’ the Ravens, I do believe that they need to stop relying on Joe Flacco for his deep passes to his end zone.

The Ravens need to go back to short passes down the field. We get it, Flacco has a good arm but that arm of his is extremely inconsistent and is costing a lot of potential touchdowns. That’s just my opinion though and I’m obviously far from an expert.

I’ll continue to root for the Ravens no matter what because that’s part of being a fan. Fans should be loyal regardless of a team’s record (even if it is horrible). I just hope that the remainder of the season differs from the beginning of the season for the Ravens.

Ninteen-Year-Old Father Convicted of Manslaughter After His Toddler Shoots and Kills Herself

Melvin Andre Clark Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina is being charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after his two-year-old daughter shot herself fatally which resulted in her death. At just nineteen years old Melvin has had several run-ins with the law and “had been sentenced on convictions of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of a firearm by a minor.” When arrested, police found several outstanding warrants when running Clark’s name such as “misdemeanor cruelty to animals, larceny, and marijuana possession charges.” Police report that two-year-old Samarri Tyana Beauford was playing in the living room of her aunt and grandmother’s home when she found a loaded .22 caliber pistol that her father had left underneath the couch. Although the police refused to disclose information on where the two-year-old shot herself, he does say that “a child that small, they don’t have the strength to pull a trigger with their index finger, but they are strong enough to use pressure from their two thumbs. Typically, they’ll be looking at the weapon when these things happen.” Clark is currently being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond and his case will continue on November 7th since no attorney was assigned to his case.

This is a really unfortunate situation, and it seems that as of lately there have been a lot of incidents in the news reporting on infants and toddlers being killed by relatives or accidently by themselves because of a lack of supervision. This saddens me because with each of these cases that means the child who has died will not be able to live out all of their potential. We’ll never know the great things they could have been capable of doing for this earth. Life is a precious thing and I’ll never be able to understand how anyone can take the life of another person, especially an infant or a toddler. Although the father in this particular story is young, he still should have known better than to leave the gun in a child’s reach, and the child should have never been unattended while playing in the living room.
