How to: Make Hot Fudge Brownies in the Crockpot

Greetings, cooks!

Seeing as this will be my last food blog of the semester, I decided we should go out with a bang! And what better way to go out with a bang than with my favorite dessert of all time, hot fudge brownies! Now, this is something that, until recently, I baked in the oven. However, there are way too many times when I really want brownies, but don’t feel like doing the whole baking thing. So, I figured out how to use our favorite kitchen appliance, the crockpot!

Ingredients
  • 20 oz pkg brownie mix, prepared
  • 1 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1 cup hot (not boiling) water
  • Optional Toppings: vanilla ice cream, thawed frozen whipped topping, maraschino cherries, sprinkles
Instructions
  1. Spray your crock pot with cooking spray
  2. Pour your brownie batter in your crock pot, spreading evenly
  3. In a bowl, combine your chocolate syrup and water and pour over your batter
  4. Cover and cook on high for 2½ – 3 hours (or low for 6-7 hours), until the edges are just set
  5. Take off the lid and let it stand for 30 minutes so the middle can set up
  6. Serve with your favorite topping

The first time around, you’ll want to start checking in on it after two hours on high or after about five hours on low. Each crockpot is just a little bit different, so cooking times my vary.

Chicago Mayor Calls for Resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Over Laquan McDonald Murder

This Tuesday, December 1, 2015, Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago asked for the resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. This happened at a press conference that was heavily attended by protestors that were unsettled by how the city was handling the murder of a black teenager by the Chicago Police.

At this press conference, Mayor Emanuel also described a new task force he is hoping to implement; the task force will be dedicated to reviewing “how the city trains and oversees its police officers, and consider input from victims’ rights representatives, law enforcement organizations, and youth and religious leaders.”

The unrest in Chicago is not unlike what is being protested by Black Lives Matter campaigns across the country. More and more American cities are beginning to speak out against police brutality aimed at African Americans. New York City, Ferguson, and Baltimore have been key cities to the movement, as well as cities with the most instances of police brutality targeted predominantly at black males.

Chicago joined the list of affected cities in October 2014 when teenaged Laquan McDonald was shot repeatedly to death by an officer who spotted the young man carrying a knife yards away with his back turned to the officer. The footage of the incident was released recently after a journalist claimed in court that the video is public record.

Seeing the murder on tape brought even more protestors of brutality to the streets of Chicago, and landed the officer with a first-degree murder charge. The officer, however, walked out of jail on bond and is merely suspended from the force.

Apple May Remove Headphone Jack From Future iPhones.

There are rumors going around that Apple will not include a 3.5mm headphone jack in it future iPhones. They say that instead customers will use the lighting port that is already built into the phone.

There are potentially pros and cons if this rumor turns out to be true. First by removing the headphone jack, it would require an adapter to use your normal headphones. Even though there are headphones coming out that use the Lighting plug, the vast majority of people use headphones with the 3.5mm headphone jack. So this would be the biggest con.

Rumors are that in order to make the phone thinner, they would need to do away with the 3.5mm port. But iPod Touches are thinner than iPhones and yet they still have the 3.5mm port. So that doesn’t seem to be a logical reason.

A pro of making the switch could be better sound quality. Currently the digital file on the phone has to be run through a digital to analog converter so it can be heard from headphones, and that process leads to degradation in the quality of the sound. But how much better and if the vast majority of people will even notice it has yet to be seen, or heard in this case.

Another con would be if you wanted to listen to music while you charge your device, having one lighting port would mean you have to chose between one or the other.

I would say this is just a rumor, it doesn’t make much sense and there are not enough options out in the market place to make this a viable option for Apple, I don’t believe this will come true.

Review: Disney Quest 17 years later

It’s a move that some Disney-goers were not too surprised to hear: Disney’s indoor, interactive theme park DisneyQuest would be closed in 2016.

Featuring 5 floors of classic arcade games, virtual reality experiences of yesteryear and some exclusive “rides,” DisneyQuest was technologically impressive upon its opening in 1998. Today however, in 2015, many of its flagship attractions remain untouched. Many have said that it was time for Disney to overhaul the park or tear it down. They’ve apparently chosen the latter.

As someone who spent a large majority of their childhood free time in arcades, I had to check it out before it closed its doors. I’ve had a Disney World annual pass for a couple years now and, even though admission is not a part of my pass…..arcades + Disney seemed right up my alley. And for the most part: I was right.

The park is divided into four different zones that manage to work a number of rides, games and experiences into matching themes. These are Explore, Create, Score and Replay.

In Explore, for example, you’ll find the Virtual Jungle Cruise which lets your party travel into the dinosaur age and paddle through the rapids. There’s actually an inflatable surface the raft sits on. You jump in the raft and the surface inflates and deflates to make it feel like you’re moving down a river at high speeds. Unfortunately, the paddles are not very responsive and the graphics are dated.

That’s generally how the rest of the proprietary experiences feel. Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride gives you a virtual reality helmet and puts you at the controls of a magic carpet. But the control are not the most intuitive and, again, the graphics are dated.

I could go on all day listing each “ride” and it’s pros/cons, but they all generally suffer from the same problem – They’re fun if you can look past the fact that they’re all very dated.

One stand out is Cyber Space Mountain, in the Create Zone. With Bill Nye the Science Guy at your side, you’ll get to design your own coaster by selecting pieces of track….and then ride it! It can be a tad claustrophobic when you’re sitting in the simulator watching a projector screen play out your creation, but it’s rather enjoyable – Again, if you can look past the grainy images and poor graphics.

While Disney’s own creations have not changed much, the park does include top-of-the-line arcade games, similar to ones you’ll find at a Dave & Busters. As someone who still enjoys rhythm-based music games, it was neat to play the latest American iterations of games like Dance Dance Revolution and Pump It Up.

At the end of the day, if you miss hanging out with your buds at the local arcade and wonder what a little bit of Disney magic could add to the experience, DisneyQuest is for you. If you don’t mind being taken back to 1998.

Two Simple Tips for Surviving Final Exams.

That special time of the year is fast approaching. When the temperature drops a couple degrees and students rip out their hair in anxiety of the bevy of upcoming tests and papers. Exam season can be scary and overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time experiencing it. However, the following tips will hopefully make your finals more than manageable.

First, ingrain in your mind that preparation is key. Preparation is the most important aspect leading up to the test. Don’t wait to study the day before the exam. Break up your studies over the week leading up to and the week of your exam. Cramming isn’t nearly as effective as college students perceive it to be, it is far more difficult to recall information you mindlessly memorized the night before instead of actually learned. If you prepare correctly you may still feel anxiety on the day of the test, but you will also feel confident because you know the information.

Many students stress themselves out regardless of how well prepared they are. They feel the world in on their shoulders. It isn’t. A good way to reduce stress is to maintain a healthy perspective of the grand scheme. This exam or paper will be less than a fraction of your life when all is said and done. Education is vitally important and students should take their tests and assignments seriously, but understand that the trajectory of your life won’t be determined by this test, The more weight you give something, the more control it has over your life. Don’t let a bad grade or the fear of a bad grade dictate your self worth and future success,

The term exam season turns many people’s stomachs, but it honestly shouldn’t. It’s an opportunity for success and a chance to review the knowledge you’ve gained. if you prepare and keep perspective you’ll do fine. Good luck!

As the positive experiences from players, fans and commissioner Adam Silver thanked Bryant for the dedication he empowered all different types of people to come together and root for this rich team. Wake up in the Happiest Place on Earth

Okay so I’m SOOO excited for this post because I just purchased tickets for my boyfriends birthday. I got a room in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge- Kidani Village! I’ll explain what it is if you’ve never heard of it.

Animal Kingdom has 3 hotel properties: Animal Kingdom Lodge and 2 of their Villas- Jambo & Kidani. If you stay at Kidani & Jambo, you can have a room with a balcony overlooking the savannah! It’s breathtaking having a high floor seeing the sunset/sunrise and all the animals just doing their thing. If you check into this resort make sure to have this at the top of your list. The giraffe’s, elephants, and rhinos are my personal favorite!! They have such exotic animals though and you get to wake up to it and see the whole thing. It can also be very relaxing just sitting down observing it all. They even have a tram during the day that you can ride and observe the animals up close!

They have a few restaurants on property- from quick service at their pool bars, relaxed and casual options, to fine dining and even Wine Tasting lounges, they have it all! I reserved at Jiko, which is their fine dining restaurant. Here you have the option to sit up close and personal and see the chef personally make your food! (Benihana style) And after dinner you can sit by a HUGE fire pit outside on rocking chairs and sip on some tea, coffee or hot cocoa and even enjoy some smores! Afterwards, if you have the villa overlooking the savannah, you can order some amazing room service and sit outside on your personal balcony and see it all!

I also got tickets to go to Animal Kingdom park and because we’re staying at the hotel, we’re able to take the tram and save the hassle of parking. Additionally, they have a spa on property, so that’ll be totally great and something to check out. Lastly, they play Disney movies outside every night under the stars, we probably won’t be able to do this because our day is packed but the fact that they offer that is pretty neat and unique!! Just go to Front Desk to check out their schedule.

I’m so excited to check in already!! I even have planned an In Room Celebration— which means they decorate the room for whatever occasion you’re celebrating and it’ll be a surprise when you check in. You can customize it with food, types of decorations and anything else you’d like. This place has so much to offer, I HIGHLY recommend you come enjoy it all at the Happiest Place on Earth (:

Getting a Good Night’s Sleep and Staying Awake in School

Getting enough sleep in college sounds almost unmanageable. You’re more likely to pass your hardest class then get the right amount of sleep that is recommended. It is recommended to get roughly 7-9 hours of sleep in order to get that refreshed and satisfied feeling in the morning without being groggy. It might seem almost impossible but here are some tips to help improve your sleeping schedule

First of all, try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. Sticking to a consistent sleep-wake schedule helps set your body’s internal clock and optimize the quality of your sleep. Start by setting a realistic bedtime that will work with your daily lifestyle. Choose a time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss and turn. If you’re getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. If you need an alarm clock to wake up on time, you may need to set an earlier bedtime. The same goes for weekends, try to keep a constant sleeping schedule.

Don’t take excessive naps. Of course, it can be refreshing and needed at certain points but try not to go overboard with them. If you tend to have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night, napping can make things worse.

Lastly, don’t eat big meals before bed. After a normal timed dinner you may find yourself getting sleepy way before your bedtime, get off the couch and do something mildly stimulating to avoid falling asleep, such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day. If you give in to the drowsiness, you may wake up later in the night and have trouble getting back to sleep. Hopefully these tips will help you have a better night sleep!

Black Friday Going Out Of Style – The Real Reasons You Should Just Stay Home

Every year stores open up earlier and earlier to attract the post- turkey crowd on Thanksgiving. This year stores opened up as early as 3 p.m. to make sure everyone came there first. We see all the flashy adds about mark downs and new products being sold for ridiculously low prices. But why are these prices so much better than any other day? Are these prices really better than any other day? The simple answer is No.

Research has shown that the lowest prices for all these must have items actually is cheaper as it gets closer to Christmas and before Thanksgiving. It also shows that products are temporarily marked up and then prices are cut to give the illusion of higher discounts.

Another trick that big brands have come up with is making inferior products that are only sold on Black Friday, they give the illusion that the product is the same quality as the brand that has been sitting on the shelf the rest of the year, when its made of cheaper materials and isn’t of the same quality.

Not only are the products of lesser qualities and the illusion of saving not real, but there are also the crowds of people that line up for days in advance. These people are willing to go to great lengths to be able to save a mere couple dollars on a new TV. Not a year goes by that there isn’t some type of trampling or incidents.

At the end of the day, even if the deals are real. You still end up spending way more than  you would on a normal trip to the mall. Even though you may be saving hundreds of dollars not he new tech gadget it might have been something you weren’t going to buy in the first place, you are still spending money.

In conclusion, Black Friday shopping just isn’t worth it.
