Half of Your Brain Remains Alert When You Sleep in a New Place

A new finding shows that only half of your brain is asleep when you are sleeping in a new place (such as a hotel or a friend’s house), while the other half of your brain seems to stay awake. This finding was published in the Current Biology journal on Thursday and explained why this happens.

When sleeping in unfamiliar settings, the left side of the brain stays awake as if it is “standing guard.” This explains why we tend to feel exhausted after sleeping in a new place. Sleep specialists and researchers discovered this phenomenon, called the “first-night effect” a few decades ago when they started studying people who participated in sleep labs. The first night in the sleep lab was usually so bad for most of the participants that researchers could not use the data from that night. They wanted to know why this was happening.

Yuka Sasaki, an associate professor of cognitive, linguistic, and psychological sciences at Brown University, and a team of researchers studied the sleep and brain wave patterns of over 30 Brown University students. The team monitored each participant’s “slow-wave activity,” a pattern that occurs during deep sleep. The team found that during each student’s first night of the experiment, there was a greater slow-wave activity in the right hemisphere of the brain than there was in the left hemisphere of the brain. On the following nights, both hemispheres had great slow-wave activity.

The research team also conducted a sound test to see if it really is the left side of the brain that remains awake. They played sound that was loud enough to wake a light sleeper. They found that participants woke up faster when the sound was played into their right ear, which is connected to the brain’s left side.

The Root to Stress for Young Girls

Could it be that social media is the root to girls anxiety? What causes this stress in the first place? Whether we like it or not, we face a world that is centered around self image. Not only does this make us feel inferior, it makes the younger generation feel even more insecure and filled with stress.

It could be argued that boy and girls both face the same struggle. However, boys are less concerned with self image during their younger teen age years as oppose to girls who are constantly bombarded.

A perfect image of this is stated in “Why Do Girls Tend to Have More Anxiety Than Boys?” a article by Leonard Sax, “Imagine another girl sitting in her bedroom, alone. She’s scrolling through other girls’ Instagram and Snapchat feeds. She sees Sonya showing off her new bikini;” One can only imagine the insecurities that being to arise by being on these social networks and seeing girls focus on their bodies. Meanwhile, boys are posting about sports and fun games. The stress levels are entirely different and even non noticeable on the male side.

Personally, I feel girls have been facing this stress since they were little girls. Barbies for years have set an impossible standard with body image. No wonder we have girls with major complexes’ and psychological problems. Our focus should be on restating the standard and promoting healthy body image. By doing so, we would help girls understand the meaning of being healthy and further prevent stress in their lives.

We Talk About The Racism Portrayed In The Film ‘American History X” and Why Is It Still Relevant

In this moving film we see the reality that racism creates among different types of people. Even though the movie was released almost 20 years ago, we still struggle today with his big issue. The movie shows us how being so violent, and always to fight someone because they don’t look like we do or because they don’t have the same class, its all irrelevant because at the end of the day it will only create more violence between everyone that will most definitely come to haunt in some way, no one escapes justice.

The movie shows how far a personal belief could take you to even have you destroy your own future just so you can fight a guy who looked at you the wrong way at the wrong time. It all starts very simple; to understand why these guys are the way they are we must know that it all begins at home. We see in a scene how Derek’s dad basically told him that we should not care for black people because they are just needed for the looks of being diverse in a workplace, that they are not good for anything because they are African-American.

There we can see how compliance with threats and promises influences an attitude change on Derek. Because it is not only the outcome of a social influence, it also has to do with the person complies, that is behavioral conformity by the targets to the source’s request or demands. The whole point of this is achieve a particular behavior from the target regardless of the target truly believes. So they dad could care less what the son thinks, he really wants to make sure that his son studies well for class purposes only in the real world, black people don’t matter basically. So we see how is very obvious trying to provoke an attitude change in his son, which left him very confused.

Titanfall 2 Announced for a Multi-Console 2016 Release

Earlier this week, Respawn entertainment announced that the sequel to its hit 2014 title, Titanfall, will be available later this year, and more importantly, will have a multi-platform release. Titanfall originally released in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive title, finding popularity as a launch title for Microsoft but ultimately experiencing limited audience reach due to the Xbox One’s limited playerbase. This eventually led to the early waning of the games playerbase, and within 6 months Titanfall was a veritable ghost town. Respawn looks to change things up with the sequel this time, revealing Thursday that Titanfall 2 will indeed be releasing on Xbox One, PC, and Sony’s PS4 platform, this grants the game a much larger audience and hopefully more incentive to elongate the games lifespan.

One of the biggest problems with Titanfall was its overall lack of meaningful content. While the game was assuredly fun to play, and did receive a great many awards for the smoothness of its shooting and its parkour system (which was seen as a revolutionary change for the FPS genre), it ultimately felt lackluster in terms of content, with little more than an arbitrary multi-player storymode along with the games core competitive modes. This left players feeling like there was little to do in the game other than play against others, and led to the game loosing public interest rather quickly. The fact that the game was only available on one console platform was seen as very limiting of its potential, and likely was the cause behind Respawn’s sudden full interest in developing a multi-console sequel.

The teaser trailer for Titanfall 2 showed that a full unveiling of the game would take place in June 2016, and that the title would finally bring the franchise to those on the Playstation brand of home consoles. And hopefully this time, Respawn has learned from its previous entry, and brings us another fantastic addition to a thriving genre.

Hearthstone, and it’s Existence on Mobile Devices

Hearthstone, a collectible card game (CCG) released by Blizzard on March 11, 2014 exclusively via their Battle.net service and sales platform for the personal computer, arrived to iOS on April 16th and Android devices on December 11th. At this point, Hearthstone already had over 20 million registered users, and Blizzard always had one goal with the design of Hearthstone – simplicity. Always the same game board (albeit a few visual differences), always a simple, 4-choice menu, a sleek options section, and an easy-to-navigate card collection in the form of a book. The game was even originally limited to 9 “Deck slots”, so players could only create 9 unique decks at once before having to delete one. While this limit has since been increased to 18 recently, there are still many aspects of Hearthstone that could be more advanced or possible, but simply aren’t because of Blizzards adherence to simplicity as to not “confuse new players.”

This all loops back around to mobile devices. When the game expanded to mobile, the player base grew exponentially. Between September 2014 and January 2015, the games population grew by over 5 million users partly because Android devices had been added in that time. Most card games are physical, so having a fully-online only card game is odd to most fans of trading card games in the world. While games like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh have had online versions, the base game has always revolved around going to a physical store and purchasing tangible card packs. In Hearthstone, this is not the case, as every single thing is digital, with no physical representation existing. This is partly why Hearthstone is so easy to jump in to, as there is no barrier to entry. This also means every single aspect of the game has to fit on a hard drive, which on mobile devices is a serious problem.

Blizzard has so far released 5 expansions for the game, and as they approach their 6th, they’re removing the first two from the store, never able to be purchased again. One reason is again to “simplify” the game, as they look 10 years into the future and see a cluttered store that won’t let new payers know what to buy or what is useful or outdated.  Another reason – and it’s a big one – is that devices like iPhones and Android tablets don’t have the memory capacity that personal computers do. The most typical iPhone, for example, is 16 gigs. Hearthstone alone, right now, is over 1 gig on the app store. As the game grows, this number goes up. Unless, of course, Blizzard can remove large chunks of content to keep the game a similar size for eternity. This limits new players immensely – and breaks Hearthstone up into divided camps that don’t have equal access to content.

I’m not sure if there is a simple way to fix these “simplicity” and space issues. You either let the game grow forever and eventually become a huge drain on phone space while appeasing to those who enjoy more complexity in their games, or you shrink the game as you go, simplifying the game for new players and downsizing the game for those who enjoy having a ton of content to play around with. The answer is for marketing and PR to discover.

Earthquake strikes Ecuador leaving a rising death toll

10,000 troops and 3,500 police are aiding affected areas this weekend after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the north west coastal areas. As of 10:00pm EST, at least 246 people have been confirmed dead.

A state of emergency was declared by President Rafael Correa, who ended his trip in Italy shorty after the breaking news. It is likely the death toll will continue to rise as aid is provided.

Landslides are preventing aid, such as helicopters and buses, in some areas as people are trapped under rubble and debris. Reports have said that machinery hasn’t been used due to the negative affect it may have on those injured beneath the rubble, possibly causing more harm or injury.

Some towns near or close to the epicenter, such as the city of Perdernales, have been entirely flattened in result of the tremendous earthquake.

Some have said they felt tremors prior to the quake. Witness Cristian Ibarra Santillan was in Quito at the time of the earthquake. He told the BBC that “there had been some small tremors going on for about two or three months and I thought it was one of those but after about 20, 30 seconds it started to get really strong.”

Columbia and surrounding areas also felt the tremors that struck this weekend. It’s the largest earthquake since 1979 for Ecuador.

International aid is beginning to flow in from neighboring countries, such as Columbia and Mexico. Food and supplies are among the items being brought. Reports are saying that the earthquake was six-times as strong as the quake that struck Japan earlier.

“Everything can be rebuilt, but lives cannot be recovered, and that’s what hurts the most,” President Rafael Correa said.

Iceland’s Prime Minister Resigns Amid Panama Papers Controversy

The financial crisis of 2008 rocked the world economy, destroying markets, destabilizing countries, and throwing the world in complete financial disarray. This crisis was largely the result of poor, borderline illegal financial decision of the world’s most prosperous banks and individuals, and few countries were hit harder than Iceland. Since those times, the country has made a valiant pledge to counter political corruption and the economic greed and power of those who plunged the world into near chaos, and this week, they may have done just that.

In a spectacular move of civil unrest, Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, was forced to step down and resign his position after information came out regarding a series of shell companies (used to store money in offshore accounts) worth millions were discovered to be owned by he and wife. This leak came as part of the ongoing PanamaPapers revelations, in which information leaked from a Panama based firm turned public attention so far on a dozen current or former heads of state who allegedly stashed away wealth and evaded taxes through offshore accounts. These leaks singled out the Prime Minister and unveiled his hidden accounts and assets. This lead to prompt protests, and a gathering of tens of thousands of Icelanders demanding that Gunnlaugsson step down from his position and be held accountable.

Initially the former PM resisted these demands, claiming that nothing illegal had been done, but with mounting pressure and evidence, and a growing number of natives demanding his ouster, the end was all but inevitable. On Tuesday, April 5th, the former PM announced his resignation after a short attempt to dissolve the running government that was denied by the current Icelandic president. Overall this has proven that these leaks are a veritable rallying cry to many around the world who believe that the upper class of world citizens (politicians, celebrities, billionaires, etc) are allowed to play by a different set of rules, and has shown that at least in Iceland, there are consequences to these actions.

Rare Earth Metals: The Elements of Electronics

Technology has progressed exponentially since the mid-20th century. At one time our computers were run with transistors and endless rolls of magnetic tape. Programs were written on thousands of punch cards. Computers looked more like reel-to-reel stereos.

However, technology became smaller as the components to make them changed. If we fast-forward to modern day, the number our devices have increased, as well as the computing power of our devices, and yet they continue to get smaller and smaller.

The elemental change has occurred through the abilities of rare earth metals; 17 specific elements on the periodic table. They aren’t necessarily rare, in fact they’re all over earth’s crust, but rarely are in significant deposits to make money from mining. We don’t think much about what makes our phones work, but without rare earth metals we would still be in a technological stone age.

Right now, there doesn’t seem to be much of a problem. There are large deposits in China, whom is the world’s number one supplier of rare earths. There are other areas with large deposits including Australia and South America. However, there is a problem on the horizon.

As technology becomes more integrated into our lives, we will need more rare earth metals. Developing nations are building infrastructure for technology. There are over 7 billion on the planet. One day they will need computers, cell phones, tablets. Developed nations will continue to want more and more sophisticated devices. The Internet of Things will connect machines that were never once connected.

How will the world be affected when supplies run low? We will be faced with the choice of finding a replacement of rare earths, or find more of these elements on Earth, or find them on other planets. Recycling used rare earths are possible, but how will this affect the quality of our devices? Our worse, how will the economic changes affect the world? When supplies run low, economic struggles become the drum of wars.

Scientists in China Are Developing Solar Energy That is Dependent on Rain

Solar energy power has a been a big topic for many years now. Many of us learned about it in elementary school and have seen how far this reliable and renewable energy source has come and how many successes it has made today (take a look at UCF’s campus). The only downside solar energy has is its efficiency during inclement weather (Florida has a lot of rainy days). Scientists in China are in the process of using rain to generate solar power. The team of scientists, who are from Ocean University in China in Qingdao, have developed a process featuring sheets of graphene to make this possible.

The scientists believe that rain water, which contains salts that split up into both positive and negative ions, can generate electricity when the graphene sheets are used to separate the ions (the positive ions generate the electricity). They have conducted simulation tests to see if their hypothesis is on the right path. In the simulation, they used lightly salted water to simulate rain. From this test, they were able to generate hundreds of microvolts as well as a 6.53 percent solar-to-electric conversion efficiency of energy. This is a very promising result.

For the simulation, the scientists used a solar panel that they customized themselves. They put graphene over a thin solar cell. These two layers were then placed on a thin oxide and plastic sheet. This created a solar cell that can produce solar power with both sunlight and rain. Currently, the scientists are working on advancing the technology so that it can adjust and adapt to the many ions that are found in real rain. The low concentrations these ions usually come in in real rain is also a factor that the team is considering.

Technology, The Law and Why we should be worried!

By Shawn Presley

By now we have all heard about the Brussels Terrorists attacks and the death and capture of the perpetrators involved. However, the tragedy has spurred an indirect controversy that may have a lasting affect on all of us. The FBI wants Apple to bypass the security settings of the suspected terrorists, which although in retrospect seems very reasonable and even acceptable, it does raise implications. For example, it violates the customer-servicer confidentiality agreement and opens Pandora’s box for government to breach such instances without a respect of privacy.

Opponents to the FBI feel that if such a thing happens, there will be further implications where government may feel the NEED to pry into someones private information weather the needs are legitimate or not. This particular notion raises concern on several spectrum and for good reason. The first notion is whom and at what degree will Government deem something as worthy to breach customer-servicer respect of privacy. We all like to believe that if granted such authority, government will act responsibility but without any type of oversight or public accountability, who is to say that that authority may not be abused. Second, if private corporations are subject to release information to the Government at what degree does such an action cease. If the Government can have private information on a citizen to be released from a cell service provider who is to say that will not end there but branch to other sectures such as Health Care or Internet Service Providers.

Without a doubt this situation raises valid and legitimate concerns, but a greater concern is what the Government is asking for. The latest update on the situation states that Apple has indeed agreed to hack into the suspected Terrorists personal cell phone (On the basis of the 13th amendment that abolishes slavery, with the exception if a crime is committed). However, just as some have feared the government is not content, in fact the Government has ordered Apple to create a back door breach applicable to all Apple ID products and services in case something of this magnitude happens in the future; Apple has declined the proposal.
