Is Hawai’i being occupied by the United States?

This past June, the United States Department of the Interior invited Native Americans of Hawai’i to gather at a very special meeting concerning the possible formation of a federally-recognized nation. Of course, like any debate, there were two opposing schools of thought. Some believed that the nation would be a good idea, while others hope to remove the United States entirely and reclaim independence from any and all foreign powers. The latter group formed most of the speakers that night.

Despite the majority of the speakers protesting an illegitimate, occupational government, according to University of Hawai’i’s law professor Williamson Chang, only approximately 35% if those present fell into the camp of independence, and they are simply a loud minority, albeit a large minority. However, the importance in this movement is the surprising amount of unity. Hawai’i is not very well-known for it’s people coming together and agreeing on subjects of interest.

King Kamehameha I united the Hawai’ians for the first time in history in 1810. By the time of Queen Lili’uokalani fifty years later, the United States had begun to encroach on Hawai’ian rights. Dole Company, backed by U.S. Marines, seized the island chain in 1893, although it was quickly rescinded by President Taft. A mere six years later, after stalemating between the executive and legislative branches, Hawai’i was annexed unlawfully by Congress, but without protest.

Hawai’i’s best hope at either a federally-recognized nation or independence is quickly fading, however. President Obama is nearing the end of his second term. A Hawai’ian himself, Obama promoted the Hawai’ian nation the last time it had been brought before Congress.

The aha, or convention, concerning the Hawai’ian nation has been chartered for April 2015 to allow time for level heads to reign and tempers to simmer. Perhaps opinions will change by then. If the past has shown anything, only dramatic policy change for Hawai’ians would persuade many of them to remain in the fold.

Why Daylight Saving Time is Better than Standard Time.

On November 1st we returned to standard time, and left the blissful days of daylight savings behind. Only a week in, and I already long for the days where the sun would watch over me late into the evenings. Everyone has their preference, and I make no bones about mine being for daylight savings. Days where you can squeeze out every hour of productivity, and watch the sunset as you return home.

This isn’t to say that I loathe standard time. It has its perks. For one, it marks the return of the cooler months. The temperature is far more pleasant, and there is no better companion than a crisp breeze. It’s just that the days seem as though they are gone before I can appreciate their arrival. I recognize the true blame lies with my lackadaisical youth, content to sleep in until noon. If I was an “early bird” perhaps the time change wouldn’t be so bothersome, maybe I would even prefer it. A reward for my resolve and discipline to wake up at seven sharp every morning. However, as it stands I am in a constant race to complete my day’s goals in this standard time.

It’s not unlikely that this is a grass is always greener scenario. In a couple months when it is time to return to daylight savings I may boon the transition back. A bridge not yet crossed so today I conclude my love letter to daylight savings with a succinct “I miss you.”

Dr. Ben Carson Continues to Defend Himself Against Controversy

Dr. Ben Carson has made a number of statements that have resulted in media uproar but much of the controversy is due to recollections of his past. Carson claimed to have sheltered students during race riots at his high school but after interviews with classmates nobody remembered him acting in this way.

“Why would they know about that, unless they were one of those students,” Carson responded.

Carson has also been criticized for his timeline about meeting General William Westmoreland on memorial day in 1969 and being offered a scholarship to West Point.

“Well I know he was there in Detroit…You know it may not have been Memorial Day. But it was sometime during the time that I was the City Executive Officer.” Carson admitted.

Another story that has caused controversy is a circumstance involving an exam while he was at Yale that was shown in his 1990 autobiography “Gifted Hands”.

Carson is obviously fed up with these accusations and has feels that he is being singled out from the other candidates.

“I have always said that I expect to be vetted, but being vetted and what is going on with me —’You said this thirty years ago, you said this 20 years ago, this didn’t exist’ — you know, I have not seen that with anyone else. If you can show me where that’s happened with someone else I will take that statement back,” he said.

Whether or not its true Carson has been singled out and picked on more than the other candidates is up for debate, however, he makes a good point in that elections are plagued with the surfacing of random fact checks about situations that happened 20 plus years ago.

Carson will have to wait till July 18th for the Republican nomination to see whether voters are truly effected by such controversy.

Protests Against Donald Trump’s Appearance On SNL Get Serious.

Regardless of the riots outside of NBC studios in New York, and regardless of how angry Hispanic politicians were about it, Donald Trump was the main guest on last night’s Saturday Night Live.

Over 300 participants were scouted by dozens of Latin American organizations, and they all maintained a peaceful protest. These people also voiced their rejection towards this popular show which, they believe, has turned into a racist platform against immigrants.

This is the second time the business mogul, and now aspiring president of the United States, hosted SNL. Trump hosted the show while making fun of himself: “Part of the reason I’m here is because I know how to take a joke”, according to Trump himself.

During the opening monologue in a prepared skit, Larry David yelled “racist” at Trump. David later joked that he was promised by a Hispanic organization he’d be paid 5,000 dollars if he agreed to interrupt Trump during his monologue.

The show also recreated an imaginary presidential cabinet for 2018, led by Trump, in which his daughter Ivanka played as Secretary of the Interior. In that moment, Mexico’s President hands Trump a check in order to pay for the wall that would stand between the US and Mexico.

Outside of the studios, it’s no laughing matter for the Hispanic protesters: “Racism is no joke, our families are going to pay for the consequences of Trump’s racist decisions.” Stated Karina Garcia, from Answer Coalition.

Sunday morning, Donald Trump said to CNN that he felt happy to be part of the show and was confident that SNL’s ratings were going to be the highest in all of the show’s history.

Gene Editing Saves Infant Girl’s Life

At Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), the world’s first patient with “incurable” leukemia was cured today.  The patient, Layla Richards, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of only 14 weeks old.  She went through months and months of treatment to cure it.  It eventually evolved into an incurable disease with no possible treatment.  The Richards family didn’t care what had to be done, they had to get their little girl better.  The researchers at GOSH said that they had been working on a treatment on genes in order to get rid of the aggressive leukemia.  The catch was that it has been only tested on mice before this moment.  The Richards, as stated before, didn’t care.  They wanted the treatment.  They volunteered their little girl.  They gave her the treatment which was an injection of 1ml of a genetically modified T-Cell called UCART19.  This is a T-Cell taken from a healthy donor and then genetically edited to be a “universal” cell that could be used for many different recipients.  Usually the cells would be rejected, but now they will be accepted.  The team did this by using molecular scissors called TALEN proteins in order to go into the “data” of the cell and cut off the gene in the T-Cell that would give away that it is a foreign cell.  The newly created gene was injected into Layla’s body and then continued to fight off the leukemia.  Several months later, One year old Layla has absolutely no more cancer cells left in her body.  Now the researchers are planning to do a widespread experiment in early 2016 to further the use of this miracle gene.

Gmail’s New Feature ‘Smart Reply’ Can Respond to Your Emails For You

Many Gmail users struggle to keep up with all the messages coming into their inbox, but Google is set to release a new feature that should save a lot time, and require little to no typing. Google has made sending emails easier with their new feature called Smart Reply, which will have three short response options for users to choose from when they open a new message.

The new feature will come out this month for those using the Gmail app, and you will not have to update the app. Smart Reply is contextually smart; it will read the emails and come up with replies that are unique for each received message. For example, some response suggestions may be “I’m not sure”, “I’ll check on it”, and “I’ll see if I can find out”.

Suggested responses have been around for a while, but Smart Reply’s ability to read through the content, and come up with a natural response immediately is revolutionary. Google engineers hope this will effectively save typing time for users. Two networks make up Smart Reply; one encodes messages, word by word, to get the general idea of what the message is saying. The second network uses the codes from the first network to come up with the responses.

There will be mistakes at first, but Google engineers have said that Smart Reply will improve over time based off of the responses users choose. For emails that require a more thoughtful response, Smart Reply will have options that give a jump-start for lengthy messages. No humans will read the messages, so privacy is guaranteed.

Police Body Camera’s Unveil Justice

Two officers have been arrested and face charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. According to CNN, a hearing is scheduled for their case on Monday.

The two Louisiana officers are Norris Greenhouse Jr. and Derrick Stafford, who on Tuesday while on duty, killed a 6-year-old boy and critically injured the boys father. Jeremy Mardis, who was just a first grader, had his life taken away, as officers opened fire pursuing his fathers car, while he was strapped in the front passengers seat.

Details of the shooting have yet to be released to the public, but according to local news outlets, the boys father had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest. When cornered at a dead end, the boys father reversed his vehicle and that’s when the officers opened fire.

Even though details haven’t been released to the public, body camera footage helped to charge the two Marshals. State Police Colonel Michael Edmonson told CNN, “I’ve been a police officer for 35 years, but as a father — much less as a state police — it was a disturbing, disturbing video that I watched, and that really helped move us forward.”

There is so much confusion with this case, because even though local reports said the father had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, investigators cleared that up by saying that was not true. Jeremy’s father, Chris Few, also didn’t have any firearms in the car.

This is a perfect example of how body camera’s can keep officers a little more honest. If there was no body camera, these two officers might have just swept this under the rug, matched facts in the police report, and probably wouldn’t have been charged with anything, since the facts are cloudier than swamp water.

Roxanne Couvillion was Jeremy’s teacher. She said that the little boy loved class, playing and doing alphabet puzzles.

“We’re just heartbroken,” she told CNN, standing steps from a small memorial made up of balloons and stuffed animals. “He always was an angel and we know that he’s watching over us.”

Does Gun Policy Need to Change?

Is Gun Policy Changing? Where? Are you talking about laws or policy? Is this about schools, states, or the country?

In the wake of the Umpqua Community College shooting, in Roseberg, Oregon there has been great debate in the realm of gun policy in the U.S. Nine people were killed in the shooting and their ages ranged from 18-67.

After shooting the victims, the assailant exchanged gunfire for sometime with police before committing suicide. Investigators say they found 14 firearms linked to the shooter. The shooter served in the Army from November to December of 2008 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, but was “discharged for failing to meet the minimum administrative standards,” the Pentagon said.

President Obama has had his fair share of shootings while in office and he decided to make an address. Hes addressed the media 14 times on nine different occasions. In his speech about the incident, he said, “”Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine, the conversation in the aftermath of it. We’ve become numb to this.”

People seem to be upset with the way the policy is now, and they hope to see a change in policy. A lot of people don’t know if they want to have that burden of carrying a firearm as they believe this is what causes a lot of the problems.

The National Association of Firearms hold much of the power because they have a lot of money and can lobby to keep things the way they are. While they also have the secondment amendment on their side, many argue that this is an out dated rule and we should adjust with the changing time and new society.

It’s hard to say what exactly is going to happen with this policy. People don’t seem to understand that people who are inclined to do crazy things like shootings, will do them with whatever tool they need, be it gun, knife, bat, or stick, they will do it no matter what. Having stricter guidelines and having in-depth psychological and background can narrow these incidents down, even if it is a fraction of a fraction.Empowering people and giving them their “15 minutes of fame,” is also a big reason these events occur and the media need to stop “glorifying” the people responsible for atrocious acts, making it easier to go along with the act because it motivates them.

There are so many uncertainties in policy and with just weapons in general, but one thing is for certain these shootings need to stop.

Is red meat the cause of cancer or is agenda setting keeping us from the bacon?

Every decade or so, there is always something trending up as something else is trending down. The love of high waisted shorts returned from the eighties and showed its face again in the past couple years. The need to listen to the local radio stations morning show has ceased now that the Internet radio has taken prevalence, it’s rare that you can go into you first class or the beginning of you’re job and have a normal discussion about the radio because it’s so rare that someone else has been listening.

One fad, that has been pretty prominent for at least the past decade has been this new health craze. At first everyone grew this fear of msg, the sprouted the need for everything to be “green” or organic. In addition, children are more commonly being plagued with lactose, nuts and gluten allergies that keep them from experiencing all of the tasty goodness that previous generations basked in. But what has become the even darker fad? This new message saturation the media telling us to stay away from red meat and the even scarier warning that this red meat may increase our chances of getting cancer…significantly.

Now most Americans are a fan of red meat, and who can blame them? However, to play devils advocate, have we reached the point where we believe everything the media says. Can we fully trust statistics, even when they state that something as minuscule as a couple slices of bacon can increase our chances of contracting cancer by 18%? Or is that just it, do these statistics seem asinine to those of us who are completely aware that we’ve been eating red meat for generations without any prior problems? And why is it so easy for us to question the media and if they have our best at heart, especially when we understand the concept of agenda setting. I personally am at a crossroads when it comes to how I’m going to handle this news. Part of me believes that the livestock being raised now may not be the best, of course we have to check what they eat because that’s all a food chain that ultimately effects us. Yet the other half of me wants to scream in protest and question what the next best food item will be that is apparently the worst.
