Could Miami’s Loss In London Be Philbin’s Last Game

Even before the Miami Dolphins left for London days ago, rumors had begun to swirl about the fate of head coach Joe Philbin.  Barely grasping a 1-3 start to the season, the Dolphins have looked absolutely dreadful this year.  There was a lot of hype before the season about how much talent and potential the team has and now that hype has been replaced by disappointment.  The free agent acquisition of Ndamukong Suh cost Miami a pretty penny and was supposed to help build an elite defensive line that could strike fear into the hearts of elite quarterbacks around the league.  But so far through four games, Suh has not even managed to get one sack.  Player shortcomings and lack of team preparation has been evident and many believe it is about to cost Joe Philbin his job.

Reports from sources close to the team say that management will heavily review their position on Philbin’s future over the next few days.  It is very possible Philbin is fired as soon as Miami returns from their latest loss in London.  Ironically, last season when the Dolphins played a game in London, they beat the Raiders.  That loss for the Raiders turned out to be the last for then head coach Dennis Allen.  Allen was fired as soon as the team arrived home.  Sadly Philbin could receive the same news upon returning as well.  Firing Philbin will not solve all of Miami’s problems though.  They will need some crafty management and drafting to try and rebuild a team that is riddled with bad contracts and underachieving players.

US Cargo Ship El Faro Missing because of Hurricane Joaquin

A United States cargo shipped called the El Faro departed from Jacksonville last Tuesday the 29th, when Hurricane Joaquin was still a tropical storm off of the coast. The cargo ship, which had 33 crew members- 28 from the United States and 5 from Poland,- was heading to Puerto Rico on a regular run when they ran into trouble.

The cargo ship was being hit by winds of more than 130 miles per hour, and by waves up to 30 feet. The cargos ships last communication was Thursday morning saying that the ship had lost power and was taking on water. Since this communication, the ship has not been heard from.

On Saturday an orange life boat found 120 miles Northeast of Crooked Island was the first sign of the ship. Early that afternoon, aircrews said that they had found “life jackets, life rings, containers, and an oil sheen” that was in the search area.

The owner of the cargo ship says that a contracted tugboat along with another ship found a container that seems to belong to the El Faro, but the still the missing ship, or life boats have yet to be seen.

The company says that the voyage was authorized and that the crew members were equipped to handle the changing weather. Parents of those crew members lost at sea say they had faith in the cargo ships captain. They said he is a top- notch well- educated captain who would not have put his crew or his self in danger if he knew what was out there and how quickly it would get to them.

Liquid water discovered on Mars for the first time

The human species has always yearned for new frontiers. In the words of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, “As for me, I am tormented with an everlasting itch for all things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts.” The Red Planet Mars has always been one of our prime targets for space colonization and expansion, and now that dream grows ever closer to reality.

Liquid water has been discovered on Mars. At first it seems impossible. The surface temperature is far too low. However, recent developments have revealed the existence of chemicals that not only allow liquid water to flow, but also prevents it from evaporating and dissipating into space due to the planet’s nearly nonexistent atmosphere.

How did we make such an exciting discovery? In 2011, University of Arizona undergraduate student Lujendra Ojha remarked on strange streaks on Mars’ surface according to photos taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Today, he is a Georgia Tech graduate student and has continued his research into the subject.

Water has been known to exist on Mars, albeit in different forms and in different times. Scientists have revealed frozen ice caps at the north and south poles, and there is evidence that the planet hosted liquid water in much greater quantities long ago. The discovery of remnant methane in particular has brought scientists to the conclusion that life existed there once. However, the planet has since suffered some sort of calamity, losing geothermal heat and atmospheric density to the perils of space, and with them went the water.

Now, with the discovery of liquid water still possible on the Red Planet, the next step is to ascertain where it comes from. According to NASA’s Mars Exploration Program’s lead scientist Michael Myers, that is exactly what they will be doing. Whether it is drawn from the soil and collected or directly from some subterranean aquifer is unknown as of yet. Hopefully this monumental breakthrough will serve to launch us further down the path of space travel and the exploration of new worlds.

Recently Announced ‘Peeple’ App Met with Heavy Criticisms

Imagine a world where you could review you friends, family and enemies, thereby attaching a glowing endorsement or a scathing condemnation to their name. That is what the recently announced app Peeple sets out to make possible. The app which is often described as a Yelp for people has been met with heavy criticism over the last week. In the court of public opinion the verdict is that Peeple is a poorly thought out idea which could have terrifying implication if it were to take off. Truthfully, that conclusion is probably right. Millennials already deal with at least a perceived lack of genuineness amongst themselves. This app would put people under constant scrutiny, and cement a culture of wearing masks.

Panic shouldn’t set in just yet. The app is hardly past the conceptual stage, and even if the Peeple app has a successful developmental phase that does not mean it will catch on with the larger public. That said, there are quite a few red flags that should be mentioned if this app were to become a hot trend in spite of the criticism it has received thus far. You cannot opt out of being reviewed, all a person needs is your telephone number and you are up for internet scrutiny. Furthermore, it appears that negative reviews that do not violate their “integrity features” will be permanent even if the person being reviewed disputes it.

Opinions by nature are a matter of perspective. They are also fluid and subject to change. A fair share of bad ideas have come out of Silicon Valley, but the Peeple app is one of the most stomach churning. If the app ever does see the light of phones let’s be responsible and not turn this terrible idea into a sensation.

New Study Suggests Different Reason for Dinosaurs’ Demise

Until a recent study, scientists have agreed for the longest time that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by a catastrophic, mountain sized asteroid hitting the earth. New research published in the science journal “Science” on Thursday, October 1 suggests that the crashing of the asteroid also caused a volcano to erupt in present-day India, assisting in the destruction of the dinosaurs and seventy percent of Earth’s species at the time.

The dating of formations along the sight of the eruption suggests that the volcano was active and erupting even before the impact of the comet, which greatly increased the intensity of the eruptions. This would suggest that the active volcano would have killed off the dinosaurs and the other thousands of species even if the asteroid hadn’t hit Earth sixty-six million years ago, something scientists had not considered until now.

According to Berkley geologist Mark Richards, “major gaps remain in the data, but these events could have been exactly at the same time.” Before findings regarding the fatal asteroid surfaced in the 1980s, many scientists believed that the extinction was caused by a volcanic eruption. After a discovery by the father-son team of Luis and Walter Alvarez, most concluded that the dinosaurs’ extinction was caused by an asteroid crashing into the Earth. According to CNN and “Science,” this new research shows that not only are both parties potentially right about their hypotheses regarding the asteroid and the volcano, but the relationship between both natural disasters could be causal.

Apple Sells Record Amount of iPhones During Launch Weekend

Once again the iPhone giant has outdone itself. First weekend sales of the iPhone have been estimated at almost 13 million units. This comes after last years new iPhone sold, at the time a record, 10 million units. While boosted by an added week of available pre-ordering, year over year increase in initial iPhone sales are at a massive 30% proving the demand for the device is still as incredible as ever.

The question behind what is driving such massive demand for the latest iPhone can be solved with a simple answer, China. The iPhone only recently became available in China which accounts for 30% of the world’s smartphone demand. Coupled with the transition to 4G technology, China’s consumers have gone wild for the new iPhone. While the smartphone market in China is beginning to saturate, Apple expects the demand to upgrade phones to stay as strong as ever in China as the Chinese continue to see data and network upgrades equivalent to those in the U.S..

Apple also says the new features of the iPhone 6s and larger iPhone 6s Plus have been very well received feeding the desire to upgrade current iPhones or transition from Android operating system devices. The new iPhone features “3D touch” and “live photos” which were previously not available on other devices. Apple calls these features ground-breaking and first of their kind in the smartphone market.

While hard to find, the iPhone is now on sale in stores in the United States and plans to have the device available in 130 different countries by the end of the year.

Ken Jeong’s new primetime series breaking barriers for Asian Americans everywhere.

The past couple of years have seemed to be slightly darker than the years prior, and by darker I mean negativity such as mass shootings, unnecessary killings that may have stemmed from race issues, and war have seemed to be plaguing this country. We live in a period that appears better on the outside than it is on the inside. We live in a time period that houses issues that previous generations thought we would have or should have overcame. One of the issues that seem to be a constant in this country for some is race. Not every race feels as if they are treated equally or appropriately, others seem to disagree at this notion and continue to wear their rose colored glasses. However, the issue of equally amongst the races is an ugly truth, so prevalent in nearly every aspect of this country, including the media.
Those who choose to disagree about the unequal treatment of varying ethnicities cannot argue with statistics. For instance, in primetime television, roughly 80 percent of the actors are white, while perhaps 15 percent may be African American and the other 5 percent a mosh posh of other ethnicities. Yet, what ABC has done recently to equate the groups is promote primetime shows that the underrepresented races such as Asian Americans. Ken Jeong has a new show debuting on ABC with the cast mostly consisting of actors with an Asian background. One of the first shows of its kind to show a realistic, down to earth Asian family go through their everyday struggles just as George Lopez showcased a Latin American family and the Cosby Show displayed an African American family.
Jeong’s new show reveals so much more opportunities for minority races, who knows maybe the next show will debut a Native American family.

College Campus Mass Shooting. 10 Dead, Gunman Identified.

Another American College Campus Shooting.  At least ten people dead, seven others wounded three of them in critical condition. The shooting happened at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg Oregon. Twenty six year old Chris Mercer was the gunman responsible for such an unfortunate massacre. Students from the community college stated that the gunman asked students to lay on the ground, later told one by one to stand up and asked what their religion was. Whoever said they were Christian, Mercer would reply with “you are about to see God in just a second” then BOOM would shot and kill them.

The bloodbath started happening around 10:36 AM. 911 emergency calls started flooding around 10:38 AM when students all around campus started dialing 911. Other students simply fled their classroom for places to hide. Around 10:44 AM officers confronted Chris Mercer (the shooter). Seconds later the gunman is dead.

This is the 10th fatal school shooting in 2015 and the 15th time President Barack Obama has to come out and talk about a mass shooting. The president is disgusted by these events stating that school mass shootings are happening continuously and we need to put a stop to this American Epidemic. Our thoughts and prayers are not enough for what has happened in Umpqua Community College. The community of Roseburg gathered at night for a prayer service to honor the victims and those still fighting for their lives. School officials say that this will not terrify them, Umpqua is a resilient community college, and the school will continue to have a positive attitude to help the community move on.

Oregon school shooting renews debate on concealed carry in Florida colleges

There has long been a legislative push to force state colleges to allow concealed weapons on Florida campuses, but the most recent shooting at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon has brought the issue back to the forefront.

A new bill is making its way through the Florida House of Representatives that would do just that — allow students, or anyone over the age of 21, to carry a concealed weapon with the proper permit.

Representative Greg Steube (R) is the creator of the bill that has garnered primarily Republican support. After a lone shooter gunned down 10 people and injured 7 more at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Steube told WTSP in Tampa Bay that such a bill could prevent a similar incident from happening in Florida.

“Had someone been there with a concealed weapons permit they probably could have stopped this atrocity from happening or at least have a fighting chance,” Steube told the station.

As with anyone who receives a concealed carry permit, the individual would need to undergo thorough background checks and could not have a history of mental illness or drug abuse.

The bill is currently sitting with a subcommittee in the Florida Senate, but is expected to receive some opposition from Democrats.

The main argument being that it would simply put more weapons on campuses.

Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Education is reportedly looking into arming security guards and providing state funded training for active shooting situations.

Even after a shooting at the Florida State University campus, a similar bill still failed to pass in the House.
