Why Deflategate Won’t Hurt Brady’s Legacy

After eight months of the most overblown story in recent sports history, the deflategate saga has finally concluded.  The scandal originated in the NFL during the AFC Championship game that took place on January 18, 2015.  The New England Patriots were hosting the Indianapolis Colts in a game that would determine which team would advance to the Super Bowl.  The Patriots won the game 45-7.  But later that night, a reporter from Indianapolis published a story claiming that the Patriots were possibly using footballs that were below the regulation air pressure level that was acceptable by the league.  This sparked a five month long league investigation that eventually determined that it was “more probable than not” that the Patriots, and more specifically quarterback Tom Brady, had knowledge of the deflated balls and conspired for them to be that way in order to gain an advantage.  This report turned out to be highly controversial and many analysts were quick to point out the lack of specific evidence used to justify the findings.

Although ripe with error, the commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, used the information in the report to suspend Brady for four games. The Patriots were also fined 1 million dollars and had several future draft picks taken away.  After a lengthy appeal process, Brady eventually had the suspension overturned in court.  The judge ruling on the case determined that the investigation performed by the league was not truly independent.  The judge also found that there was no precedent for such a harsh penalty given for such a small infraction.  Although Brady won his appeal, many people believe his legacy has taken a hit.

But with a little research, it is easy to find many other examples of great athletes admitting to equipment violations during their playing days.  The greatest wide receiver in NFL history, Jerry Rice, admitted to using Stickum on his gloves to help catch the footballs.  Stickum is a sticky spray substance that was commonly used in the league before it was banned in the early 80’s.  And in other sports like basketball, Phil Jackson and Shaquille O’neal have admitted to letting air out of basketballs during games to gain an advantage.  Shaq said during a podcast that “Sometimes, in the games during all my championship runs, if a ball was too hard, I let air out.  I’d have a needle. A friend of mine would have a needle and I would get the game ball. … I needed that extra grip, but I wasn’t doing that for cheating purposes. I just needed the extra grip for my hands so I could palm it, a la Michael Jordan, the way he used to palm it.”  And in 1986, Phil Jackson told the Chicago Tribune that “What we used to do was deflate the ball.  We were a short team with our big guys like Willis [Reed], our center, only about 6-8 and Jerry Lucas also 6-8, [Dave] DeBusschere, 6-6. So what we had to rely on was boxing out and hoping the rebound didn’t go long.  To help ensure that, we’d try to take some air out of the ball. You see, on the ball it says something like ‘inflate to 7 to 9 pounds.’ We’d all carry pins and take the air out to deaden the ball.”

When comparing the deflategate scandal to these other stunning admissions by great athletes, it begins to seem incredibly insignificant and common.  The main reason the story was so huge is because of the history of the Patriots and the prior Spygate scandal that caused them to lose money and draft picks 8 years ago.  Many teams and fans are envious and spiteful towards the Patriots because they win a lot of championships and are so hard to beat.  The real reason the Patriots win so much is because they have the greatest quarterback and head coach in the history of the league.  Tom Brady will be a first ballot hall of famer and go down as the greatest of all time.

Atlas V Launch Awes and Confuses

In the early morning hours of Wednesday September 2nd people were awakened by a very unusual sight. A bright flume of smoke was lit up in the sky with what appeared to be a beam of light coming down from it. Many people thought it was a meteor, a possible explosion, or even a UFO. The confusion was so great that the National Weather Service had to issue a statement to let people know that there was not any kind of meteor of anything.

In reality the sight that everyone was witnessing was the launch of the Atlas V rocket that was scheduled to launch at 6:18am that morning. The amazing sight they were witnessing was the rocket launching creating a flume of atmospheric pressure. This flume is created at every launch of every rocket, but in this particular launch at the time of day the flume was illuminated as the sun was just rising, creating an amazing and never before seen sight. Many people who knew about the launch called into news stations and asked across social media whether something went wrong with the launch and asked if there was any kind of explosion. People had reason to suspect that something might have gone wrong after the SpaceX explosion on June 28th.

The Atlas V was launching one of 4 satellites for the Navy, the MUOS-4. Together with ground relay systems and military handheld devices it will provide smart phone coverage to sailors at sea, troops in remote locations, and even coverage for the Coast Guard in the Arctic.

Eqyptian billionaire proposes to buy island for Syrian refugees

Thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing the civil war wracking the state die at sea, en route to Europe. Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawaris believes that purchasing a Mediterranean island from Italy or Greece may help save lives and create livelihoods.

As far-fetched as it may sound, would this plan be feasible? Sawaris believes it is. What credentials does he have to make him so confident?

Sawaris is worth approximately $2.9 billion and ranks as the 544th richest person in the world. He is chairman and CEO of Orascom TMT, chairman of the board of Wind Telecomunicazion, and owns a television channel. His position allow him to provide telecommunications services to Africa, the Middle East, and Korea.

It is apparent that this media mogul has the means to install proper infrastructure on any island he plans to buy, which would be vital to its success. He understands this fact, saying “the main thing to invest in is infrastructure”. Sawaris also claims “money is not a problem”. Although it is not built for refugees, Sawaris has built the holiday resort El Gouna on the Red Sea and has experience with construction and urban planning.

However, there are challenges to this plan beyond money. Either Italy or Greece must be willing to sell land in order for it to take off. With Greece in the grips of financial disorder, perhaps they would be more willing to make an agreement, similar to the Louisiana Purchase between the United States and Napoleonic France, only on a smaller scale. An island able to house hundreds of thousands of refugees would cost between $10 to $100 million.

From a legal standpoint, there would also be issues of authority and customs. Sawaris’s proposal includes the possibility of declaring independence and establishing a new – albeit small – island state. With that goal comes a host of problems and more red tape than one can imagine.

Whether this idea could give birth to a new state remains to be unseen. Perhaps the world should subscribe to realism and wait for an island to be bought first before looking too far into the potential future. In any case, if successful, Sawaris can benefit hundreds of thousands of lives that need people like him to help.

Is there such a thing as new music? Music Plagiarism in the 21st Century Pop Music

Blurred Lines. Stay With Me. Girlfriend. Midnight Memories. All of these songs were popular at their release, but their popularity isn’t the only thing that they have in common. The other thing that they have in common is that they were all subject to plagarism claims. Stealing someones work seems to be the new craze in popular music which is really unfortunate that some of these songs have to be dragged through scandal when they are great works of art.
Popular music is characterized by its formulaic nature, it has a catchy tune, it can be enjoyed with a group or alone and the lyrics are simple and easy to remember. The problem with pop music and really any type of music is that there are a set prescribed number of notes that can be used. So the musical combinations that can be created are are finite. So how much similarity is acceptable before something can be considered a copycat?
The axis of awesome identified the I-V-VI-IV progression was spotted in 73 songs, all of which were well loved in their day and to this day. All of these songs were greats and these artist didnt have to compose with the fear of being labeled a plagiarist, but in this generation one that is so willing to drop a lawsuit for the tiniest offense, will this delay the creative process? Will the next generation be denied their “Don’t Stop Believing’” , their “Paparazzi” and I am just sorry for a generation that doesn’t have their own version of “ Apologize”, will karaoke really ever be the same?
I think that the similarity between songs needs to be measure on a different ruler than say the ruler that is set for literary work, where the number of words in the world are truly astronomical so the combinations are infinite. I think it would be a shame to limit the next generation of musicians betause specific chords had been used in the same melody before. If Slip Knot and Justin Bieber can be accused of having the same melody, then there is obviously a lot of room for people to be able to create using the same basic notes and they should be allowed to do so.

Pictures taken on Mars by Curiosity Rover continue to spark controversy.

Is it a space mermaid or an alien ship? Maybe just a big rock. The Internet has gone wild speculating about the mysterious figures captured by NASA’s Curiosity rover. The car-sized robotic explorer was sent into space from Cape Canaveral in November 2011, as part of the Mars Science Laboratory mission. Curiosity landed on the red planet half a year later. In over three years of coverage, the exploratory mission has fueled countless of theories developed by web bloggers, including a rat, a few lizards, and even a woman walking on the surface of the planet.

Scientists credit these mysteries, for example the martian rat discovered after zooming in on a image captured in September 2012, to “wind erosion and mechanical abrasion and breakdown chemical weathering of the rocks, as to why they get these weird shapes,”. This according to deputy project scientist Joy Crisp, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. In addition, the perception of these objects can be explained by a weird phenomenon in the human eye that happens when our brain connects abstract images to familiar objects. Tied to our persistent obsession of trying finding extraterrestrial life, of course.

Another image that sparked controversy in the month of August of 2015 was the silhouette of a lonesome woman walking on the deserted land. NASA scientists later dismissed the idea of an alien lady wandering around, since several other shots of the same location, taken months before, still showed the same woman-like figure.

Looks as though folks over at NASA have an explanation for everything; including a persistent ray of light that went on for weeks in April, earlier this year, which they credited to “cosmic-ray hits or sunlight glinting from rock surfaces,”. Meanwhile, regardless if we believe these explanations or not, conspiracy theorists around the globe will continue to debate on this issue and also to fantasize about the possibility of life on the neighbor planet.

McDonald’s set to offer all-day breakfast nationally

The fast-food giant McDonald’s will no longer have to serve the rush of customers trying to meet the 10:30AM cut-off time for their globally known breakfast menu. Last Tuesday, company officials announced that they will release an all-day breakfast menu, starting on Tuesday, October 6.

The adaption to an all-day breakfast menu has been highly acclaimed by consumers. McDonald’s received over 120,000 requests on Twitter to eliminate the cut-off time for their breakfast items. Before corporate executives made the official decision, they had tested an all-day breakfast menu in select restaurant locations, finding huge success. “It’s been the number one requested thing from our customers for years,” McDonald’s President Mike Andres said.

For years, McDonald’s executives were reluctant to offer breakfast items throughout store hours, simply because it would be difficult to serve the breakfast and lunch menus simultaneously. In order to make room for the expanded menu, some locations are slashing some of the less favorite food items. For example, McDonald’s locations in the Nashville area are removing McWrap’s from their menu. Not all breakfast items will be available all day, however, popular items will be preparing for their all-day debut, including the Egg McMuffin, McGriddles, and hash browns. Andres confirmed that items that will be added and deleted from the menu will vary from market to market.

This marketing strategy is an attempt to push the company out of the two year profiting slump, as competition in the fast food industry stiffens, and changes begin to increase in American tastes. Andres closed out his official announcement by stating, “We believe that all-day breakfast could be the next big thing.”

If You Could Make a Utopian Society Would You?

I have recently started watching anime on a more frequent basis. Anime, which means animation in Japanese, is a style of Asian cartoon geared more toward adults. Not that there isn’t childish anime either, I just think of it as what Pixar does, making a movie for children, with subtle jokes for the parents. But with Netflix and Hulu it’s almost wrong not to watch them, because of how many there are. Scrolling through the pages and pages of anime, I stumbled onto one that, the way the title alone was written, caught my eye. The name of the anime, is Death Note. The premise behind the show, is a 17-year old boy from Japan, Light Yagami. He finds a notebook that as long as he writes a person’s name and has that person’s face in mind, that person will die, of a heart attack unless specified otherwise. Light is definitely an anti-hero, because he uses his wits, as he is the top student in his high school, and his strong sense of “justice” to murder criminals that show up on the evening news. He sets sail for this voyage of killing, in the beginning, to make a utopian society, where he is recognized as the god or savior of the world. It really had me thinking, if I was in his shoes, would I do the same thing? I kept coming back to one answer, yes. The reason is because murdering criminals could be a benefit to society. But then my mind races again with the fact, that I’d become what I was trying to rid the world of, and someone could argue I became the worst form of what I was trying to eliminate. Even knowing this, I think I’d still do the same as Light because in order to have rebirth there needs to be death. According to the bible, God destroyed the world numerous times to rid it of evil and give mankind a new chance. Would you use the Death Note?

1 Injured in Downtown Orlando Explosion

Yesterday, fire broke our after reported explosion in downtown Orlando. This explosion occurred at an auto salvage company located  on East Colonial Drive near Chuluota Road around 12:30 pm. The explosion forced city officials to shut down traffic on East Colonial drive until close to 5:30 pm.

Due to traffic blockage, school buses were delayed in almost all orange county schools. The nearby elementary school was evacuated soon after the explosion. The nearest gas station, a Circle K, was quickly evacuated and all gas lines were turned off.

According to the fire marshal, nearby debris caught flame and the fire soon engulfed the entire building. The Orlando Fire Department fought the fire for almost an hour with many different hoses and chemicals before they got the flames at bay.

The one injured person has been identified as an employee of the auto salvage company. Fire officials say he was taken to the hospital with serious burns. Fortunately, he is in stable condition.

The fire has been said to have started due to experimental cooking fuel. The owner of the building, Aaron Fetcher, is said to be working on a source of alternative energy. It is unclear if the alternative energy being spoke of is the experimental cooking fuel that combusted in the warehouse.

The Real Issue Behind on Air Murders

America is in a high state of emergency as senseless killings continue to rise. The tragic murder of Alison Parker and Adam Ward by former colleague Bryce Williams, as he was known on air, has captured the attention of us all. What appeared to be a well thought out plan by Williams, as he took the lives of Parker and Ward, serves as a sobering notice. That notice, plain and simple, is the subject of  race and discrimination. The perpetuating, vicious cycle continues to rear its ugly head.

Those in power who choose to ignore the race issues this country has never resolved, unfortunately, will continue to see murders at an alarming rate. Not condoning the actions of Williams, just stating a fact that most Americans refuse to acknowledge. It is the underlining message of hate that fuels the tragedies we see today, be it black or white. The twenty-three-page suicide note left by Bryce Williams, indicating the reason for his actions, states: “They were due in part because of the murders of churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina and intolerance for homosexuality.” This gives a glimpse of the future. In that future, rebellious acts of violence will perpetuate as long as racism and discrimination remain in America.

As we move forward, I reflect on our past that has become the present. It is frightening to think that the horrors from long ago will resurface, unless we can learn from the tumultuous lineage of America. This country has to see beyond differences such as, sexual preference, or the color of another’s skin.

Finally, I leave you with the words of Frederick Douglass. “The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion.”

“Sultan of Slash” Horror Director Wes Craven Dies at 76

Craven on-set with the cast of A Nightmare on Elm Street Photo: Mimi Craven

Wes Craven once stated that, “Horror films don’t create fear. They release it.”

And Craven ought to know, because he is the man responsible for releasing decades worth of remarkably macabre cinematic terror. This week we sadly lost the prolific horror director. On August 30th he passed away due to brain cancer at the age of 76. Presently, many are reflecting back on his impressive filmography and rediscovering what had initially drawn them to his work.

Beginning in the ‘70s with infamous exploitation flicks such as The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, he garnered a reputation for unflinching portrayals of savage brutality. Controversial and often banned, these early ghastly entries remain challenging for the faint of heart. While on the surface they appear to be nothing more than mindless gore, Craven drew inspiration from unexpected sources and intended not only to scare but also to provoke thought. The Last House on the Left was based on Ingmar Bergman’s art house film The Virgin Spring. It was deliberate in graphically tackling the taboo subject of rape and examining whether violence for the sake of revenge can be justified. Coming off the heels of the Manson Family murders, during a time when Americans watched the Vietnam War on television, these movies had a place in the countercultural zeitgeist.

In the ‘80s he boomed with the wildly popular A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, creating an icon of fright in the supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger. Craven directed the first installment on a relatively low budget. Through innovative techniques he successfully blurred the lines between real and imaginary, disrupting the perceptions of his audience. Known worldwide, many who grew up around this period will recall sleepless nights in which they feared their bed. You’re not safe anywhere, not even in your dreams. Freddy has returned again and again to feature in nine films, a television series, and several graphic novels.

The genre in the ‘90s was revitalized by Craven turning horror on its head in the highly referential Scream series. The film deconstructed slasher flick tropes and put them on display while explaining the rules of a horror movie. It became a colossal hit at the box office, transforming into an instant classic. Serial killer Ghostface asks the important and now well-known question, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Many would say Scream. The franchise would go on to shape other metafictional films such as Cabin in the Woods.

In more recent years Craven had taken to primarily writing and producing. With some work still not yet released, The Girl in the Photographs and Home, we still have these projects to look forward to in the coming months.

From Craven’s Twitter, on-set of My Soul to Take

Craven’s horror transcended the silver screen and wormed its way into our nightmares. Though he was most well known for his movies that terrified audiences, Craven commented that, “Horror films are not me, or they’re not all of me. They’re a very thin slice of me.” Regardless of the genre, all of his productions were masterfully crafted manifestations of his artistry and passion. The Academy Award nominated Music of the Heart serves as proof that Wes Craven was capable of being more than ‘just a horror director.’ He was a filmmaker.

Wes Craven’s memory lives on in his work and will continue to do so for many years to come. He has left behind a legacy not only of chilling horror but also of creativity and originality. I don’t know about you, but I think that I’ll dig out my old VHS copy of A Nightmare on Elm Street to watch alone in the dark tonight. Pleasant dreams.
