Many people spend countless hours playing virtual games whether it be online, on the computer, or even on your smart phone. Why do people get addicted to these games? Why do people pay a lot of money to pretend to be someone else? Is it because they are bored with their lives? Is it because of their feeling of loss of control? When reading the article, “Expressing My Inner Gnome: Appearance and Behavior in Virtual Worlds” I realized how people choose these virtual lives over their own. One of the reasons being that one can choose a completely different person and be in total control of that life.
When I was younger, I would pop in my Sims disk in my computer and spend hours upon hours playing this game. For me, the best part was being able to build the house of my dreams at the age of eleven. I picked the most beautiful Sim and bought her the most awesome clothes. It was as if I had a dream life in my dream world. When playing this game, I felt extremely confident and content because I was in control of everything in my virtual world. These games can negatively or positively affect a person because it can build some peoples self esteem but this esteem is artificial or it can give one the confidence they need. Yet, some people can put all of their time creating this virtual world but not a lot of time working on their actual life.
