In a recent global release, author and communication scholar Dr. Robert S. Littlefield shared insight into the heart of humanitarian service during a historic moment in his new book, Resilience and Renewal: The Story of Lions International and the Crisis of COVID-19. The book chronicles how Lions Clubs International, one of the world’s largest service organizations, adapted, endured, and grew through the unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a candid interview led by professional journalist and UCF professor Richard Brunson, Dr. Littlefield discussed what motivated him to write the book and the deeper stories behind the headlines. As COVID-19 disrupted global health systems, isolated communities, and halted countless in-person gatherings, Lions Clubs around the world faced a critical question: how do you continue serving when everything stops?

Dr. Littlefield was inspired by how club members responded with creativity, courage, and commitment to their core mission of service. “What I saw,” he explained, “was a global community refusing to step back. Instead, they learned in finding new ways to connect, support one another, and continue their work.”

The book doesn’t just recount the crisis, it highlights how adversity sparked innovation, inclusion, and resilience across generations and cultures. From virtual service projects to expanded global partnerships, Lions International not only survived the pandemic, but they also emerged stronger.

Through Resilience and Renewal, Dr. Littlefield offers readers an inspiring lens on leadership, communication, and service in times of crisis, reminding us all that even in isolation, global solidarity can thrive.
