Free Speech Week is an annual nonpartisan celebration highlighting the fundamental principles of freedom of speech and the press. The event took place from October 21st to 27th and even though Free Speech Week has passed, instructors can request to use the module at any time since it is available all year round. In honor of this week, UCF faculty have developed a Free Speech Week Webcourse Module. This module includes a quiz designed to assess students’ understanding of free speech rights in the United States, Florida, and specifically at the University of Central Florida. In addition to the quiz, the module provides national and local resources related to free speech, equipping students with in-depth information about these critical issues. Dr. Adam Parrish, Communication Lecturer, discusses in detail what the Free Speech module is about and why it is important.
What is the FSW module about?
“The Free Speech Week module presents an opportunity for students to explore their understanding of the rights, responsibilities, and resources related to free speech in the United States, Florida, and here at UCF. There is a quiz that assesses existing knowledge, and links to nonpartisan websites dedicated to covering free speech topics.”
Why was it made?
“This module helps establish which types of speech are protected by the First Amendment, which are not, and where things can get a bit unclear. Engaging in protected free speech at UCF is a key focus, empowering students to express themselves thoughtfully and responsibly.”
What is your overall philosophy about FSW?
“Free speech is both a right and a responsibility that fosters democratic dialogue.”
Why is FSW an important celebration?
“This week reminds us how valuable freedom of expression is and highlights the need for us to understand and protect that right.”
