Korea Designs Jellyfish-Eating Robots

“There are plenty of fish in the sea” is a popular American idiom used to encourage the lonely and heartbroken.  But it is certainly not a statement of fact in the fishing waters of Korea.  Over fishing has significantly diminished the fish populations in that region, as well as many others worldwide.  And while the problem is a serious one, it is also rather difficult to solve.  People need to eat, and in much of coastal Asia, fish is an enormous part of a balanced diet.  But there is another problem related to the first that can be solved, and in a unique way at that.  Over fishing results in an exponentially increased population of jellyfish.  Jellyfish, when too numerous, cause many problems for fishermen and swimmers alike, and could further damage the ecosystem as well.  So to combat this growing nuisance, Korean scientists have designed Jellyfish-Eating Robots and sent them into action.

These robots are entirely autonomous– they function on their own with nobody controlling them, and they are programmed to find, suck up, and shred jellyfish.  They have detailed maps of the areas ingrained in their programming, and they remember the places they have already been in order to be more efficient.  They “hunt” if you will, in packs of a few robots to improve the outcome, and are called the Jellyfish Elimination Robotic Swarm or JEROS.  If a single JEROS robot did nothing but constantly catch jellyfish, it would be able to eliminate over two-thousand pounds per hour.  I personally find it very interesting that humans as a species have the tendency to mess up an environment with our zeal and our numbers, then we come back years later and attempt to slap a band-aid on the damage we have caused with our technology.  If this is always going to be the case, keep an eye out for robot trees.

Japanese Nuclear Leak Threatens Pacific Waters

There have been recent talks of radiation poisoning threatening the coastline of California. A nuclear power plant in japan that was affected by the recent tsunami has been rumored to be leaking radiation into the Pacific Ocean. The threat is not just limited to the waters; any aquatic animals that are used for food in the Pacific are at risk of having been contaminated.

Surprisingly, there has been a recent announcement that the clean up for the leakage will be postponed until 2017. The recent heavy rains have made it more difficult to clean the coolant tanks, which were ruptured. The rumor is that a rodent may be responsible for the coolant takes shutting down. This led to a leak of radiation, and since the earthquake and tsunami disaster destroyed much of the coastline, the leakage has reached international waters.

The levels of contaminants are still very low, but the situation has been raised to ‘very serious’ according to Japanese officials. The water that flowed though the buildings and houses around the power plant were also affected causing over 9,000 people to evacuate their homes. This made the situation much more serious and was the impetus to create an awareness for a clean up.

Tepco, the company who owns and runs the plant has been overwhelmed while dealing with this issue. They claim that the contaminants in the ocean are too low to affect the safety of life. Tepco has taken additional steps to flow the contaminated water from underground into the sea and claim that it will not pose a threat.

Is Jameis Winston That Good? Will He Keep It up?

This is a very premature question, but I feel like it should be addressed.  Will Jameis Winston be the greatest Quarterback to ever play in college football?  Or better yet the greatest to ever play in the NFL?  The kid has everything you want in a QB.  A rocket for an arm.  The right mindset.  He also has the size and athletic ability that makes you go wow.

Standing at 6’4 and weighing nearly 235 pounds Winston possesses the size that any team would dream of.  His arm may be the best arm we have seen in years, and frankly the guy has ice water running through his veins.  As a red shirt freshman at Florida State University he has taken college football by storm.  He has lead FSU to a 6-0 record and they are currently ranked #2 in the polls.  He has given FSU fans the hope to dream about a national championship, something they haven’t seen in over a decade.

He makes plays with his arm that freshman QBs shouldn’t be able to make.  He plays with the poise of a fifteen year seasoned veteran.  He can make any throw on the field and he completes them with ease.  He just makes it look so easy.  This all coming from a Gator fan.  How can you not appreciate or respect play like that?  When I look at Jameis Winston I see a guy who is taking the college football by storm and will soon take the NFL by storm.  He will be more than likely the first pick in the 2015 NFL draft and the team he goes to will be extremely happy.  Barring serious injury or off the field issues I can certainly see Winston possibly being one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game.  At both levels.  There is still a lot to see, but so far, I am very impressed.

UCF Comes Back From a 21 Point Deficit to Beat Louisville

The University of Central Florida beat the eighth ranked Louisville Cardinals 38-35 in a great football game on Friday night. The Knights picked up their biggest win in school history. UCF had never beaten a top ten team in history. The victory brought the Knights into the top twenty five in all three of the polls. The BCS rankings have the Knights at 23. UCF now controls their own destiny for the American Athletic Conference. If UCF were to win the rest of their games, the Knights would have an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game.

The loss for the Cardinals was demoralizing. Everything the Cardinals expected for this season may have been lost in the loss. Louisville had an outside chance of making it to the national title game, but those hopes were crushed. Along with the national title hopes went quarterback Teddy Bridgewaters dreams of winning the Heisman Trophy. Bridgewater has had a great season, but with all the tough competition for the award, Bridgewater had to lead Louisville to an undefeated season to put him as a true candidate. Teddy will still have to play good football to get the team back into contention to win the American Athletic Conference.

The Knights were once down by twenty one points in the third quarter, but they didn’t lose faith and stormed back behind two touchdowns by Storm Johnson. UCF tied the game before entering the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Knights kicked a field to take the lead, but the Cardinals rushed down the field and scored a touchdown to take back the lead. With three minutes left, UCF had to stay poised behind quarterback Blake Bortles. The Knights drove down the field and scored a touchdown with twenty three seconds left to take the lead. Bortles threw the touchdown pass to the Knights old quarterback Jeff Godfrey. The Knights shocked the nation with this win and are now a team to watch out for the rest of the season.

Increased Amounts of Pollution in Beijing, China Creates New Set of Regulations.

Amid the intense and harmful effects of air pollution which are plaguing the heavily populated areas of China, the local government of Beijing has issued new regulations to combat the serious issue.

The strict rules were implemented this past Thursday when scientists presented the city several warnings about the dangers too much pollution can have on the atmosphere and, consequently, the health of Beijing’s inhabitants. Additionally, the International Agency for Research on Cancer announced that they were now adding pollution to their human carcinogen list; comparing it to such things as cigarette smoke and asbestos.

The plan is being laid out now because colder months tend to bring larger amounts of air pollutants as a result of the increased usage of heating systems which are powered by coal. Local officials explained that the new regulations will be made up of a series of alerts consisting of four colors that will be displayed depending upon the level of pollutants that are present in the atmosphere on any given day. The first two alerts would be the colors blue and yellow which indicate heavy to serious pollution. This would mean that the entire city would need to wash its streets down; an act that would restrict the amount of debris being swept into the air. The last two alerts would be indicated by the colors orange and red. An orange alert would mean that there had been three straight days of heavy pollution, thus resulting in shutdowns of construction sites and the use of firecrackers as well as barbecue grills. The red alert would be the most serious and signify the complete shutdown of schools and restrict the ability of people to drive their vehicles.

Hopefully, this policy will bring about a significant reduction in the amount of pollution being emitted into the atmosphere.

Google’s stock skyrockets to the thousand dollar mark

On Friday the tech giant Google hit a new record. You might ask yourself what record could it be? Well this record is a big one. On Friday Google’s shares skyrocketed over $1000 a share. Google’s previous record was $926 a share, which happened in July. Google’s spokesperson said that this new record is from the all-around growth and strength in Google. Google’s sales jumped to a huge $14.9 Billion last quarter, which was a 12% gain over last year’s sales.

Where Google feels that they are bringing in the most money is in their search department. As the Internet grows and grows everyday people are using Google to find new things. Google owns a lot of Internet advertising and people use Google’s AdWords which lets your website come up in a search more often. One thing that is weighing the company down is the growing mobile market sector.  Mobile Internet usage is growing at a fast rate and companies don’t want to pay as much for mobile ads when they can pay less for desktop ads. The number of paid clicks rose to 26% over last year, but the average amount paid per click fell by 8%. Another thing that is holding Google back is Motorola. The Motorola mobile business lost $248 million in the quarter due to low sales of their newest “Droid” phone. Google said that it expects Motorola’s financials will be volatile for “quite awhile” Last thing, but it is a good thing, is that Yahoo, Google’s main rival, reported results that were weaker than the prior year.

Mickey Mouse Finally Given a Voice in Orlando

Visitors to Walt Disney World will now have a completely different experience thanks to enhanced audio costumes for Mickey Mouse. He will now be able to talk in meet and greats throughout the park. Since Mickey and other characters were introduced into the parks, the characters could never talk to guests but only pose.

Although it may seem like only a little change this new feature is a huge upgrade it technology. This required a completely new suit for Mickey that would feature an audio compartment and even mechanical pieces in his house region to make his lips move with each word he says. There are a handful of phrases that Mickey can say, but even this will soon be upgraded upon. He is also only featured currently in one section of Magic Kingdom park with this capability. Disney wants to be sure that the public gives this new feature a warm response before it is incorporated elsewhere in the resort.

I believe that soon any of the characters throughout the parks will feature this new upgrade. It will completely change the experience for a child coming to the park. To this children coming to the parks, the characters will literally be coming to life around him or her and will be able to hold full conversations with them. It will bring a new sense of discovery to the children.

Along with this, look for competing parks in the area like Sea World and Universal to start repeating this same technology.

UCF Ranked 23rd in BCS Standings

On Friday night the UCF football team played against Louisville, who was the 8th ranked team in the country. Louisville was undefeated, and many thought that they would remain undefeated and play in a BCS bowl game. UCF stood at 4-1, with the only loss coming at home against South Carolina. The game Friday night had potential to be the greatest game in school history because of the massive implications that surrounded it. UCF has only beaten a top ten school once, which was against Southern Methodist. Louisville was clearly the best team in the conference, with UCF being their only true test this season.

With less than eight minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, the UCF punter fumbled the ball and Louisville returned it for a touchdown. The Cardinals were leading 28-7, and UCF needed a comeback. Storm Johnson answered back on the next possession, making it a 14 point game. On the ensuing possession for Louisville, they fumbled the ball on a running play and UCF had the ball inside their own forty yard line. Within the next 4 minutes, UCF would go on to score 2 more touchdowns to tie the game at 28. With only 30 seconds remaining in the game, UCF had the ball at the 2 yard line, down by 4 points. Blake Bortles threw a winning touchdown pass to Jeff Godfrey, and the UCF Knights defeated 8th ranked Louisville.

UCF is now ranked 23rd in the BCS standings, and in first place in the conference. UCF will be the favorites in every game they play for the rest of the season. The most important game this season will likely be against the Louisville Cardinals once again, this time in the American Athletic Conference championship. If UCF wins the conference, they have an automatic bid for a BCS bowl game. This has potential to be the greatest football season in UCF history.

College Apartment Complex Car Towing, Is it Actually Necessary?

Around the University of Central Florida, almost every apartment complex has strict parking rules for visitors. Unfortunately these rules are not the rules that usually apply for regular non-university apartment complexes. If you do not park in a visitor spot be prepared to drive thirty minutes to pick up your car and dish out $150.00 to get your car back. Sadly, many visitors look for blank spots thinking that there are reserved spots for the students that live at these apartments.

Even worse, chances are your car could have only been parked there for an hour or so and it will be gone, when you go to leave or wake up in the morning. With the towing trucks driving around in the late hours of the night, you never know what to expect. But why are students subject to this? Many of us are just starting to pay for our own things now that we don’t live at home and struggle with money. Yet we are being targeted for towing in the communities we live in and our friends and families are as well, when they come to visit us, therefore ruining the weekend.

As young adults we’re still learning many things about the world and unfortunately many of these towing signs are hidden, but because they are posted even if not easily visible the only thing you can do to pay to get your car back. Is there any real advantage for anyone other then the towing company though? What is the real reason our communities have regular towing and why are we so limited on our visitor parking? Is there no other alternative for us as students and is there anyway to stop the towing and save us some money for things we actually need?

Playing to your Audience: The Art of Reading Body Language

We’ve heard it since we were young, “body language tells more of a persons’ emotion than the words themselves.” It seems rather obvious that sometimes people cover up what they are really trying to say verbally but don’t understand that their body shows the whole story. Taking this observation practice from subconscious act to the conscious realm entails enough benefits that will help in just about any interpersonal communication situation.

Take for instance the job interview. Many times, people are unsure whether to attack and fight for the position aggressively, or to sit back and take a more subservient role. Here is a prime example of when reading a persons posture and physical attitude will come in handy. Step one, really look hard at the person interviewing you. Are their shoulders held high and tight or slouched? Their facial expression, is it stern or accepting? How do they hold their hands when talking and listening? All of these factors come into play when deciding how best to approach your answers during the interview.

Of course you can’t tell everything strictly from the way a person carries themselves; however, using both words and posture together will absolutely give an accurate view of the person with whom you are talking. Being able to pack this bit of knowledge in your communication toolbox affords you endless advantages among others in the world. After all, how can we communicate with many without knowing the basics of talking to one?
