Ten Ways to Know if He’s Into You

Here goes a little inspirational help if you are trying to figure out if your guy crush is equally as interested in you as you are in him. Hopefully these 10 hints will let you know all there is to know. HINT ONE: If he always wants to sit next to you when you are with a group of friends. It’s not a coincidence, either he’s drawn to always being next to you because he loves being around you or he wants people to get used to seeing the two of you together. HINT TWO: If you guys have constant communication and he initiates he most of the time. Not all things have changed, guys will never go out of their way to talk to a girl everyday that they have no type of interest in. HINT THREE: If he’s constantly complimenting you. Guys are notorious for not noticing much so if a guy notices little things about you and is always telling you how he thinks that shirt looks great on you or your hair looks nice that way, best believe he’s also checking you out.

HINT FOUR: If he play fights or tickles you. That is the oldest rule in the book for knowing if someone is flirting with you. That is a guy’s way of making you laugh and getting close to you at the same time. HINT FIVE: If he wants to share his food with you. Sharing food can be romantic and cute, if he wants to share his food with you more than once he is already trying to be couple-like with you. HINT SIX: Back to constant communication, if he texts you back fast that’s a really good sign. When people do not feel like talking to you they will usually take forever to respond but if he’s really into the conversation then he will provide quick responses to your messages.

HINT SEVEN: If he asks to take pictures with you. No guy is going to go out of his way and ask to take a picture with someone they do not want to be seen with, that’s a fact. If he is asking to take a picture with you he wants to see how people would react to the couple-like picture. HINT EIGHT: If his friends tell you that he always brings you up. If you’re constantly hearing about stories he has told his friends, you must be on his mind. HINT NINE: If he goes out of his way to spend time with you especially if it’s doing something you do not think he would usually be into. HINT TEN: If he asks to hang out just the two of you. HELLO! He is practically asking you on a mini date for the real one. He’s totally into you!

Government Shutdown Begins to Weigh on Stocks

It is has been seven days since the government shutdown began and it still doesn’t seem that the two parties will resolve the impasse anytime soon. For the first 5 days, stocks had held up pretty well considering the current situation. However, with the October 17th deadline quickly approaching, stocks are beginning to drop.

Several bank stocks, like that of JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Golden Sachs, and Bank of America have dropped nearly two percent. Considering that the technological company of Macintosh/Apple has dropped thirty percent from their all time high numbers in 2012, Apple shares have actually been moving ahead recently with the release of the new IPhone.

Various professional analysts say the decreasing stock options will force the government to fix their issues much quicker. On the other hand, Bank of America made a statement that they feel “A resilient stock market and a cloudy economic picture may increase the risk of an extended shutdown”. Over the weekend, this bank had lowered their anticipated fourth quarter GDP growth from 2.5 percent to two percent.

Analysts are afraid that stock prices will be hurt by weak third quarter earnings. Capital market strategist Ishaq Siddiqi said the debt catastrophe could lead to a “subsequent meltdown of global asset prices.” Shares for company of Blackberry have raised nearly four percent as buyers are considering buying the devices in parts. It is apparent that the government shutdown is affecting many aspects of the U.S. and must be resolved soon. I know this situation has happened before and we have come back from it, but it is still a nerve-wracking circumstance.

NFL’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Doesn’t Seem Entirely Helpful

Through the month of October, the NFL really hammers on the idea of breast cancer awareness by having pretty much every piece of gear worn by a player have pink on it in some fashion.  On top of that, this year the NFL made the penalty flags the referees throw pink as well.  They announced today (after backlash from people who claimed it made it hard to see when a flag was thrown, which is true) that the flags would once again be yellow next week, and I have to say that’s a good decision.  It’s a good decision not only because the premise the backlash was based on is true, but also because I don’t think the way the NFL approaches the issue of breast cancer awareness is necessarily all that helpful.

The idea behind having pink all over every NFL telecast for the month is that, first and foremost, having the color be so visible in such a popular sport will raise awareness by itself.  I think this is a fine idea in theory, but hammering on that concept to the point where the colors become distracting and the viewer begins having gripes about it makes the idea of raising awareness conterproductive, in my opinion.  The other thing the NFL hopes to do is sell pink merchandise in order to benefit breast cancer research; however, a very small % of the funds of the NFL’s charity dedicated to the cause actually go to said research.  This is a huge problem, and one that indicates the NFL should re-evaluate its approach to breast cancer awareness from the bottom-up.  The NFL either needs to dedicate a lot more of the merchandise % to the actual cause, or stop simply attaching pink to the players and thinking that’s good enough.  Instead of spending time focusing on aesthetics, the NFL should spend time researching various programs and research foundations they can set up (or simply donate money to) that will actually help make progress when it comes to raising awareness for breast cancer, and also helping to fight breast cancer.  I would plead to the NFL: make these changes not because of the effect they have on the purity of the football game, but rather because you actually want to make a real difference in fighting this terrible disease.

U.S. Government Shutdown Affects Most

Earlier last week, the United States government shutdown.  This was due to the fact that the idea of Obamacare was being tossed around and caused a disagreement between Republicans and Democrats on a spending plan for the fiscal year.  A fiscal year for the government begins on October 1st and ends on September 30th.  Congress needed to decide on the budget before the 1st of October, which they failed to do.  The disagreement was that the, “House Republicans insist any new spending bill include provisions to either defund, derail or otherwise chip away at Obamacare.  Senate Democrats are just as insistent that it doesn’t.” (CNN)  Although Obamacare isn’t directly tied to the country’s budget, politicians are seeing and using it as a bargaining chip.  Republicans don’t want Obamacare, so they are holding off on the country’s budget until they get their way.  Manipulative and a bit stubborn if you ask me.

The budget needs to get passed because it affects the majority, if not all, of the country.  As college students, this would mean that our scholarships and grants would stop being paid.  My father is a government worker for national security and although they can’t put him out of work, they can find small reasons to force him into it.  For example, my father had a trip to Ireland planned for months for his anniversary.  This trip begins this week and since the government shutdown occurred, they revoked his leave/vacation time.  Basically stated that if he goes on the trip, he could not return until the government returned to normal operations because it becomes a voluntary furlow at the point.  This is complete bull.  This shutdown is affecting many families and with our economy as bad as it is, this is completely unnecessary.

Students Question What to Do After School

As school draws to a much-anticipated end, it is irrational to ignore the upcoming decisions that face a college graduate. The question arises in the form of: Do I take some time off or do I hit the job market? There is no easy answer to this question and especially no right one but it is one of the most dominant thoughts in a young adults mind as they grab their diploma.

Let’s dwell into the first option, taking time off. This might seem to be the obvious choice but it leaves a lot of students worrying they will get in a funk. Many believe once they leave it will be tough to come back to the real world and work. This is a realistic worry and could be plausible but thinking this way is putting yourself in a position where you believe that it is impossible to mix work and play. Just like anything, vacation gets old and the need to feel productive is once again upon you.

Now the second choice would be to suddenly hit the work force and begin your career. Many fear this is a trap and once you step into that life it’s hard to break away. But, eventually everyone must become a career man/woman; it’s up to you to find fun in its crevices.

If you haven’t picked up that there is no right answer, then you’re correct. Decisions like these require different answers from different people, none of which are wrong, none of which are right. It is a decision that is made based on the present state of mind, and will lead you in a direction that has no visibility. However much you want to control your world, it still remains impossible. Whatever decision you make, your life will be filled with both joys and sorrows, you cannot avoid either.

History of the Twitter #Hashtag

Last Thursday Twitter made its S-1 filing available to the public, shedding some light on its initial public offering plans. Twitter has seen many changes since launching, the hashtag being one of them. With 100 million users tweeting daily, not many actually know how the hashtag originated.

On august 23, 2007 the Twitter hashtag was born. Chris Messina tweeted “how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp?” The trend followed. A hashtag is a word or phrase prefixed with the pound symbol. The pound symbol is placed either before important words within the tweet or appended to it. For example, “On Tuesdays I take #RTV 2102 #UCF #Communications.”

Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and Facebook are all social media sites utilizing the hashtag. Today, hashtags make tweets more meaningful and findable. They provide a means of grouping since one can search for a particular hashtag, say #UCF, and receive the set of messages that contain it. This is a powerful tool for businesses and is also used by celebrities to promote movies, albums, etc.

In July of 2009 Twitter began to hyperlink all hashtags in tweets to Twitter search results for the hashtagged word. Twitter now has “Trending Topics” on the home page insolating hashtags that are rapidly becoming popular. The hashtag, an addition to Twitter, has shaped the way social media revolves.

New Supplement Marketed As Legal Alternative to Adderall

A supplement known as Cerebral Success is being marketed to college student as a legal alternative for those who use ‘study drugs’ such as Adderall and Ritalin without a prescription.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health published their annual report stating that among persons aged 18-22; college students were twice as likely to abuse Adderall without a prescription than those in the same age group. Those who used Adderall without a prescription were more likely to abuse alcohol and other drugs as well.

Trevor Hiltbrand, CEO of Cerebral Success, developed the product while majoring in Finance at Brigham Young University. He initially developed the supplement for himself but soon gained interest from other students looking for an alternative to prescription drug abuse.

“I got known around my campus as being the brain supplement guy,” said Hiltbrand.

Cerebral Success’ website describes the product as a “powerful neurological enhancing supplement”. While the product has yet to be tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) it is currently available for purchase. According to their website the product is not meant to act as a replacement for those who are prescribed Adderall by a medical professional. Instead Cerebral Success is a study pill designed to provide users with increased focus and mental energy, effects typically associated with the use of Adderall.

“We cannot make that claim that we treat ADD but we do try to provide an alternative for students who would otherwise illegally use these products,” said Hiltbrand.

Cerebral Success is currently available online through their website but Hiltbrand hopes to have his product in stores near college campuses in the near future. A link to the company’s website and “indie-gogo” campaign are available below.

Scientists Discover Formula for Instant Sobriety

Imagine you’re out at the bar having some drinks with your friends and nobody has committed to being the designated driver.  What do you do when it’s time to go home?  You call a cab of course, because that’s the only responsible option, right?  Well imagine the same scenario where you can just take a pill and minutes later you’re sober as a bird.  Though the technology hasn’t come quite that far yet, scientists in California are getting very close to making this convenience a reality.  UCLA professor Yunfeng Lu and USC professor Cheng Ji recently led an experiment that successfully sobered up drunk lab mice by injecting them with a formula comprised of two combined enzymes.  The mice became sober significantly faster than the control group of drunk mice and there were no observable negative side effects.  Professor Yunfeng Lu says that once the pill form can be synthesized, it would be like having millions of liver cells introduced to the stomach, successfully breaking down and neutralizing all of the alcohol particles.

So if this seemingly too good to be true drug hits the market, what effects will it have on society?  Well for one, if the drug is affordable and convenient to use, the instances of drunk driving will significantly diminish.  This is because after all, though the people who choose to drive drunk are not the most responsible people, if the option to sober up instantly before getting behind the wheel is there, they will almost definitely elect to take it.  The instances of alcohol poisoning leading to death will also drop significantly.  Rather than a stomach pump being a necessity, the person in trouble could just have the pill administered by a friend and the enzymes would go to work.  And if the pill could be dissolved, it could possibly even be sneakily put into the drink of a too-drunk friend to save them for making some very bad decisions.

A Nine-year-old Boy sneaks aboard Plane to Las Vegas without a Ticket

Las Vegas, aka Sin City, received an unusual guest last week: a 9-year-old boy. The boy managed to depart from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Thursday morning, according to airport spokesman Patrick Hogan. He was both alone and without an actual plane ticket.

The boy made it through security and on to Delta Flight 1651 without the Transportation Security Administration suspecting anything. The crew of the flight “became suspicious of the child’s circumstances” once airborne. He told a flight attendant that his parents were in the back of the plane.

Once the crew realized that the boy was not on the roster of children travelling alone, they immediately contacted Las Vegas authorities. Delta turned the boy over to Child Protective Services and is working with the authorities to handle the matter.

The child was apparently running away from his home in Minneapolis. His mother was under the impression that he was at a friend’s house. Once she realized that he wasn’t, she made attempts to report him as missing. The boy wasn’t officially listed as a runaway until after he had managed to fly to a different state.

The day before he boarded the plane, he spent some time meandering around the airport. He even went so far as to take luggage from a carousel and bring it to an airport restaurant. Then, he abandoned the bag there but told the wait staff that he was “going to the restroom.”

The next day, the boy cleared security and flew to Las Vegas with almost no one taking notice. According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Bill Cassell, “He was able to get onto an airline where he didn’t have a ticket and made it five states across the U.S.”

Hogan explained that the airport itself “isn’t involved in any sort of passenger processing.” Approximately 33 million people travel through the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport annually. Hogan claims that in his 13 years there, he’s never seen a case like this one.

After the boy’s safety, the main concern is the gap in airport security. Since 9/11, airport security has been highly amplified. Hogan said that, “If it hadn’t been for alert airline employees on our end, he probably never would have been discovered.”

Derrick Rose Makes His Return To The NBA Preseason

Two seasons ago Derrick Rose tore his ACL in the playoffs against the 76ers. The Bulls were the top seed in the eastern conference and they were ready to challenge the Heat for a chance to play in the NBA finals. Instead, the Bulls lost to the 76ers and the high hopes of Bulls fans were shattered. Derrick Rose would need to undergo surgery, and would not be back until about mid way through the 2012-13 season, at least that is what everyone thought.

Rose ended up missing the entire 2012-13 season, even though he was medically cleared to play. Many people criticized Rose for not playing for his team. The Bulls ended up making the playoffs last year, but Rose still decided to sit on the bench and watch his team play. Several players on the Bulls played through their injuries, such as Joakim Noah and Luol Deng. Chicago could have used their superstar in the playoffs last year, but Derrick Rose decided to cheer on his team from the sidelines.

After not playing for 526 straight days, Derrick Rose finally made his return to the court on Saturday. It was only a preseason game, but Rose scored 13 points in 20 minutes. All eyes will be on Rose this upcoming season. He decided to miss the entire season last year, all because he wanted to be absolutely 100 percent for this year. If the Bulls don’t at least make it to the eastern conference finals, the criticism toward Rose could reach all new heights.
