Famous Actress From Televisions Family Matter’s, Says She Was Handcuffed and Racially Profiled By Police Officer During Romantic Vacation

It was just a few days ago when a famous Hollywood Couple, who were enjoying their vacation, were randomly pulled over by South Carolina’s police department. Cherie Johnson, who is most notable for her role as the best friend of Laura Winslow on one of the hit  television series of the 90’s, Family Matter’s, was arrested along with her boyfriend Dennis White, who is best known for his role in the film Notorious. What started off as a romantic getaway ended up as a night they are sure to never forget as the couple says they were racially profiled by the officer who pulled them over. The couple claims that while driving Cherie asked her boyfriend to pull over to the side of the road because she was sure the passage alongside the road was a cotton field. Having never witnessed a site like this, Cherie was quite excited to walk through the field and take pictures so that she could always remember this moment. While walking back to the car, the couple noticed that a police car had pulled up behind their vehicle with his lights on, and as they approached the officer he immediately began questioning them about all sorts of things. The couple recalls the encounter with the officer as a most unpleasant one as he questioned them about their possible involvement with drugs, as well as why there was so much cash in the bags that they were traveling with. The officer without any hesitation put both of them in handcuffs as he searched their belongings. With this being Johnson’s first time in handcuffs, she could not believe it and says, “He told me … I was being detained for his safety because he didn’t know me,” Although White says he has been racially profiled before, he says this time it was different and he was “distraught because his woman was involved and that touched his core.” After investigating whatever it is he was looking for, the cop did not arrest the couple but chose to let them go without even offering an apology for searching the couple’s property and handcuffing them based on assumptions of what type of people he thought them to be. Despite being let go, White says he won’t stop talking about the incident until “that racist cop” is reprimanded and punished.

I find this entire situation to be really interesting. Time after time we all have seen in the news stories about cops who mistreat human beings simply because they are in charge. With their badge on, some cops feel a major sense of entitlement and choose to abuse the power granted to them. It is never right for anybody, no matter what race they are, to be treated unfairly by a cop for any reason whatsoever. I find it extremely irresponsible and quite disgusting that certain cops are perfectly fine with disrespecting people and making assumptions about a person’s character just because of the way they look. Everyone should be treated with the same level of respect and dignity no matter what race they are or where they come from. Incidents like the one described above should be taken seriously, but unfortunately most are just brushed under the rug as if nothing ever happened. It’s time to demand something more from the system so that occurrences like this will exist no more.

McDonald’s announces plans to campaign for healthier options at their restaurants

Representatives from the McDonald’s Corporation announced last Thursday their efforts to campaign for healthier substitutes in their top twenty market stores, which make up 85% of their profits.  Under this campaign, customers will be able to choose a side salad, fruits or vegetables as a substitute for fries in a value meal.

The company has also proposed that their advertisements will now promote healthier options as well, encouraging young customers to get water, milk or juice rather than a soda in their commercials.  The packaging of their happy meals will also be changing to reflect these new health-conscious ideas on all bags and boxes.  These changes will soon be taking effect in 30%-50% of McDonald’s markets and in all markets by the year 2020.

In addition to hoping to appease their haters, McDonald’s has recently acquired organically-grown-conscious company, Chipotle with no plans of changing their current food operations.

Although McDonald’s has taken strides to be more health-conscious and provide their customers with better options, it can be said that these strides are more like steps—baby steps.  McDonald’s already offers side salads and fruit on their menu—their efforts are simply to make them easier to order.  People don’t order fruit and salads from McDonald’s because no one goes to McDonald’s for the purpose of ordering fruit and salads.  Although I appreciate their efforts, I will be surprised if it appeases their critics.

There is also the nearly laughable fact that this campaign won’t be rolled out into all of their markets until 2020.  Seven years?  Really?  You shouldn’t have.

Florida is newest state to ban texting while driving

Beginning Tuesday, October 1st, it will now be illegal to text while driving in the state of Florida. You can still talk on your cell phone while driving, but you can no longer text. Florida lawmakers have finally realized what 40 other states have already registered: texting while behind the wheel of a vehicle is extremely dangerous. However, texting while driving will only be a secondary offense, meaning you cannot be pulled over for texting alone. If you’re pulled over for driving over the speed limit AND texting, you will be ticketed for speeding and get an additional 30$ ticket for texting.

I believe this will be a very difficult violation to prove or disprove. There are limitations and allowances with this law, such as being allowed to text while at a stoplight or while stopped in traffic. If you’re going to ban something like texting while driving, I don’t think lawmakers should allow it at all. It makes it seem as if it is not a serious law. The law allows drivers to still use their cell phones for things like music, navigation directions, and using voice commands.

I think that will make things difficult for police. How will they know if someone is texting or just using their phone’s navigation system? It does not make sense to outlaw part of a device’s use, but allow other equally dangerous aspects of it. Perhaps Florida will eventually update the law to be like New York, where drivers aren’t allowed to use a hand-held cell phone at all. I think that is a more effective law.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fall to 0-4 with a Tough Loss to Cardinals

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are now 0-4 to start the season. They lost to the Arizona Cardinals 13-10 at home. It was tough to watch as a fan of the Bucs. They had a 10-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. This was the Bucs third loss of the season already by a game winning field goal with less than two minutes to play. The defense has been playing pretty well this season, but the offense can’t find a consistent rhythm.

Coach Greg Schiano decided to bench quarterback Josh Freeman this week. Rookie Mike Glennon took his place. It was Mike’s first start of his career. In the first half, Glennon showed signs that he can be a good quarterback in the league. Most of the play calls were very conservative. He never really had to throw any tough passes in the first half, only short passes to make him feel comfortable.

The second half wasn’t pretty for Glennon. Glennon threw an interception to set the Cardinals up for a game tying touchdown. Then on the next possession, Glennon took a sack one the one yard line on third down. After a short punt it gave the Cardinal great field position. The Cardinals then kicked a field goal took take their first lead of the game. The Bucs had one last shot to get down the field, but Patrick Peterson picked off Glennon for the second time of the game which sealed another Bucs loss.

The Bucs need to put some more points on the board if they want to start winning. The defense played outstanding yesterday, but the field position that the Cardinals had in the fourth quarter set them up for easy scores. Doug Martin was shut down by the Cardinals defense. It was surprising because he had a lot of carries since it was Glennon’s debut. He was expected to have a great game. The Bucs are going to be in some serious trouble soon if their offense doesn’t start scoring.

Breaking Free from Breaking Bad: How One Show Captivated Millions

Millions of people around the globe sat gazing at their televisions last night as we were presented with the finale to a story that kept our attention since 2008. Its amazing how one show, based on methamphetamine production, garnered such a following. But how? What made this show so successful? How did they take such an overused idea, the good guy gone bad, and turn it into something so great? Well, it wasn’t just one aspect that created such hype, it was an amalgamation of factors that formed together to create this masterpiece.

For one, and probably what drew me in from the start, the camera work is absolutely incredible. Throughout the seasons, there were many DOPs working on the production but one man stood out from the rest, Michael Slovis. Slovis’ visual interpretations of Walter White’s reality placed the show on a pedestal of it’s own. His trademark upshots were matched by his incredible creative composition, making everyday situations come to life in unbelievable ways. Aside from the visuals, the story itself, though at first cliché, redefined what we look for in a protagonist. Walter White started off as someone with pure intentions, or at least as pure as possible in the drug world, and we all seemed to love him. However, as the seasons passed and we witnessed his transformation, then our love turned to hatred. Hate for the man who would do anything to save himself, no matter the consequence. This hate, in a strange way, was not completely straightforward and we were able to empathize with Walter and see that he did, in fact, have a soul with compassion for a few.

All said, Breaking Bad will go down in television history as one of the greatest sagas to ever be broadcast. I’m sad to see it go but the memory of such a masterful production wont soon leave my mind.

Saturday Night Live Season 39 Premiere- Review

This past Saturday marked the 39th season premiere of the coveted Saturday Night Live. The stakes for this season have been at a high due to recent cast additions as well as the departures of fan favorites, Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis. However, with SNL alum, Tina Fey as host, viewers felt a bit at ease.

The whole episode was an ongoing joke about the new cast members and how this season is set to be a restructuring season (which is not uncommon for Saturday Night Live). In fact, the opening monologue featured the new players (as the cast are called) in an “embarrassing dance routine.”

The episode itself featured the usual amount of laughs and while Tina Fey still showed that her live TV comedic timing hasn’t gone away, the real stars of the show were two polar opposites: an actor from an extremely popular TV show and a player on the show who has only been on for a season.

Yes, I’m talking about Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad and Cecily Strong. Aaron Paul, clearly promoting the final episode of Breaking Bad, came on the show as his character and of course laughter ensued. Paul was involved in three sketches, all of which led to huge laughs among the audience. As for Cecily Strong, this marked her first episode as the new co-anchor for Weekend Update.

Strong was a standout last season and was featured in numerous sketches. She also was at the Weekend Update desk often portraying different humorous characters so for her to be the new co-anchor didn’t really surprise anyone.

What was surprising was the fact that she was in so many other sketches throughout the night as well. In my opinion, SNL is molding Cecily Strong to be one of the top leading ladies (a role previously filled by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig).

I’m okay with that, though. Cecily Strong has shown great promise and continues to gain my respect as a comedic actress. My only hope is for SNL to hold on to her for a little bit longer before she goes off to do bigger things in the industry.

In order for SNL to do well in its reconstructing season, writers need to rely on the stronger players to help carry the new players. I’m truly excited for the rest of the season and can’t wait to see the chemistry between the new and old players.

Louisiana Pastor Shot and Killed During Service

A Louisiana pastor was shot and killed during a church sermon Friday night.

Pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr. was shot while leading a worship service at the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

About 60 people had attended what would have been a normal Friday night service. Around 8:20 pm Woodrow Karey, 53, allegedly walked into the church and shot Pastor Harris twice with a shotgun.

Witnesses say that Karey fired the first shot while Harris was still preaching. After Harris fell to the ground, Karey stood over him and shot a second time from close range. Harris was pronounced dead on the scene.

Karey immediately fled the church, but later called the police to turn himself in. He then led deputies to two hidden guns in a “wooded area” – one was a shotgun, the other a .22-caliber pistol.

Supposedly, Karey used to be a deacon at the Worship Center. Harris’ daughter Talisha said that her family is baffled by his motives, as he left the church over four years ago. She also recalls that the situation was “chaotic,” and that “it was like everybody was everywhere.”

Karey has no previous criminal background and his motives are still being speculated. Officials are interviewing all witnesses who were in the church at the time of the incident. One theory is that his motive stems from “issues that occurred at the church.”

Karey is being held at the Calcasieu Correctional Center with the bail set at $1 million. He is being charged with second-degree murder.

Rapid Fire Growth Of Electronic Dance Music

Electronic dance music, also known as EDM, has hit the scene with a bang just within 2013. However, this dance music craze has been around since the early 1900’s starting in small clubs in New York called Raves. This upbeat fast tempo electronic sounds break off into many genres such as House, Trance, Progressive, and Dubstep are played by a disc jockey, better known as a DJ. Since recent exposure and attention to this music, Electronic music festivals seem to have popped up overnight in just about every major city just this year alone. EDM festivals are generally outside with plenty of room to uphold thousands of concert goers giving them the opportunity to see different DJ’s all in one place. At times, these festivals offer multiple stages to see different performers, as well as shops to buy merchandise, rides to entertain one, and even state of the art lighting and sound systems.

Not only has electronic dance music blown up at festivals and shows, it seems as though every time you turn on the radio, every artist has leaned to adding some electronic flare to their music. DJ’s that have been around since before the hype also now get recognition by their popular songs on every popular radio in America. Not only has this craze hit the U.S., but all over the country as well; Europe is home of the greatest DJ’s such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, and Paul Oakenfold. I believe the reason why Electronic Dance Music has picked up so many new fans is because of the acceptance and kindness of everyone in the scene. A community where no one is judged on the type of clothes you wear or what country your are from. The EDM community looks out for one another; some might perceive this crowd of music goers as the modern day hippies. World known DJ states “This community is exceptional in its ability to bond all types together, and I am not exaggerating when I say it saves lives.”
