Horror Satire ‘The Final Girls’ is Metafictional Comedy Gold

Released last month on home video, The Final Girls takes a page from metafictional horror films of the past with its use of key tropes from the genre. Although unlike The Cabin in the Woods and Scream—which take place in “the real world,” where the killers take their ideas from the movies—the characters of The Final Girls literally go into the fictional film within the film.

On the third anniversary of her actress mother’s death, Max Cartwright agrees to come to a showing of the cult horror film Camp Bloodbath. Suddenly a fire breaks out in the cinema, blocking all the exits. Max and her four friends cut the screen to climb behind it. Instead of escaping they enter the movie with no visible way out. Here they try to find a way back to reality without being killed by masked antagonist Billy Murphy.

The setting is a deserted summer camp. Anyone who has sex will be killed. A virginal girl is destined to be the one to bring down the murderer. References to ‘80s pop culture are everywhere. On top of story constrictions, they are also subjected to filmmaking techniques like flashbacks, slow motion, narration, and an ominous score.

The title itself is a reference to the final girl trope in slasher films. Prominent examples of these characters are Laurie from Halloween, Ginny from Friday the 13th Part II, and Nancy from A Nightmare on Elm Street.

At the heart of it, The Final Girls is a story about coping with loss and accepting the death of a loved one. Co-writer Joshua John-Miller, son of The Exorcist star Jason Miller, wrote the film as a way to cope with the death of his father. For being a horror comedy parody it’s surprisingly emotional in places. The characters are mostly genuine and very likable.

How Discrimination Affects Minority Groups In Ways We Never Thought Of

We reviewed the following article:

Arellano-Morales, L., Roesch, S. C., Gallo, L. C., Emory, K. T., Molina, K. M., Gonzalez, P., & … Brondolo, E. (2015). Prevalence and correlates of perceived ethnic discrimination in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study. Journal Of Latina/O Psychology3(3), 160-176. doi:10.1037/lat0000040

This article talks about how a group representatives from different universities has a test that they called “The Hispanic community health study also the study of Latinos in general”. Their goal is to see how far does discrimination go in terms of health for the Hispanic community from all different backgrounds, how does it affect them and why, what are common factors that got them there. Once they got their results from U.S citizens who of course have Hispanic backgrounds, they were willing to support the test to see what they get. They saw the difference in between the countries but one of the remarks they saw important is that Puerto Ricans have in general poorer health in comparison to the others. They are the ones to be seen as the criminals, the ones who come from low social class, these are very harsh stereotypes that I saw in the article. Might be true but not everyone is the same. In the other hand Mexicans came back with good results, maybe that’s from eating all the spicy food that their immune system is super strong. But that’s very interesting that Mexicans have far much better results than most. Cubans are another group who proved to have great health in most areas but didn’t get good result in other tests. “These test results are believed to be heavily affected by their social status, racism or ethnic discrimination, a psychosocial stressor with documented links to physical and mental health”. This explains why some of their health issues come from, how far does discrimination go that it affects with their lives.

‘Tis The Season To Be Grateful for Family, Friends, And God

We live in a crazy fast paced world. We stay on the go and trying to balance everything can be hectic. The thing, in my opinion, that gets lost in our pursuit of happiness is taking time to be grateful for the  things that you cannot put a price on.

You know, things like our love ones or even more important God. We get so caught up with making a dollar, that it’s easy to loose sight of the things that are more important. Some of those things are family, friends, and God. People have to remember how they got to where they are, because with out the special people who help shape your life and God Sustaining your life there wouldn’t be any success.

So as the holidays approach and we reflect on the year that has past so quickly, I pray that we see the voids all of us have created in our lives by not taking time to show our gratitude, myself included. Everyone wants to succeed but without those important factors mentioned above it wouldn’t mean anything. Think on this, can a car or money comfort you like mom or dad? Can success be there like God when life gets hard? The short answer is no.

Finally, this holiday season let us take time to remember the really important things in life. Take time to say thank you to a spouse, friend, professor, and don’t forget God, that help you get closer to your sought after success. Show them how grateful we are for them this holiday season.

Happy Holidays to you all.

The First Principle On How To Achieve Success: Make A Decision

The toughest thing in life is to make a decision. There is no bigger factor that affects our lives more than decision making.

Everything we do as human beings revolves around our decision making process. Think about this, every circumstance in your life came from a decision. That could be a decision to go back to school, or to get married. No matter what the decision was, you decided on it and it moved you.

Decisions are the beginning of motivation, not until you make a decision will anything get done. Without making a decision how will you ever get going? Also, decisions give us direction, they guide us on our journeys in life, keeping us focused on the task at hand.

Think about the last time you had to make a decision; what was it about and so forth. You will see it was the major force that got you moving towards your end result. If you had not made a decision would you be where you are? I don’t believe so. Henry David Thoreau says this “Most men live lives of quiet desperation” Why? Because they never make a decision.

Indecisiveness breeds content; forcing individuals to accept what ever life gives them. Contrarily, Decisiveness brings about freedom, making you the master of your fate and the captain of your soul as stated in the poem Invictus.

Finally, whatever decisions you make or choose not to make will determine your fate. However, if you choose not to decide life will decide for you and more often than not we never get what we desire. So make a responsible decision to make a decision.

Learn To Embrace Failure, By Realizing It Is Essential To Your Success

Many times in life we miss our mark. We set out to achieve something, but we don’t make it. We then fall into the spiral of depression where we feel like a looser. We believe we have let everyone down including ourselves.

Life hits us hard often and we as individuals have to find a resolve in ourselves to get past it. However, that is not easy. The only way we can do that is to accept failures or disappointments. You have to face the fact that things happen; there is no progress without struggle.

A person has to know in their heart that failing is a part of life, and in my opinion you learn more from failing than you do from being successful. The old saying ‘ no pain no gain ‘ still remains true today. What does not kill you will make you stronger.

You have to look beyond the existential factors of life when we fail, and you will fail, with our eyes firmly set on the prize at hand. Failure is only temporary and can be overcome if you refuse to quit. For example, think about when you learned how to ride a bicycle you fell several times; yet you got back up. But understand this, each time you fell down, you got better, why because you learned from the failing before.

In closing, I reiterate you will fail, but that doesn’t mean you are a failure. Success and failure go hand and hand one cannot exist without the other. Keep your head up and fail forward.

Three Men Rape and Kill Pastor’s Wife in Indiana

Three men from Indiana have been arrested for the rape and murder of a local pastor’s pregnant wife. The incident occurred during a home invasion on November 10, 2015. The victim was thirteen weeks pregnant when she was attacked and she died the next day. She was also the mother of a fifteen-month-old baby. Her husband was “baffled” by the attack and said he was relieved to hear that the three suspects were arrested.

“Though everything inside of me wants to hate, be angry, and slip into despair I choose the route of forgiveness, grace and hope,” the pastor and husband of the victim told the Daily News. “If there is one thing I’ve learned from Amanda in the 10 years we were together, it’s this: Choosing to let my emotions drive my decisions is recipe for a hopeless and fruitless life. Today I am deciding to love, not hate.”

The three suspects, Larry Taylor, Jalen Watson, and Diano Gordon, entered the home to find their victim Amanda Blackburn waiting for her husband to return home. Watson and Gordon left quickly with her credit cards while Taylor raped her and shot her in the head.

The suspects had previously been charged with murder as well as violation of their parols. They are also suspected of committing another rape and robbery.

“All victims of criminal homicides deserve closure, and as a community we must send a collective message that violence is not an option,” Indianapolis Police Chief Rick Hite told the Daily News. “Our detectives have worked tirelessly going days without sleep to solve murders in our city.”

How to: Make Meaty Chili in the Crock Pot (Or turn it into Chili Pasta Bake)

Greetings, cooks! Lately we have been exploring other meals, like last week we made breakfast in the crockpot. This week, we’re going to go back to our comfort zone: dinner. This is my favorite chili recipe in the book, and of course it’s incredibly easy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 24 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 can kidney beans
  • ⅛ tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • ¼ tsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp oregano
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp chili powder

Instructions:

  1. Cook the ground beef in the skillet. (I know, we actually have to use something other than the crockpot for this… we’re making progress!)
  2. Combine the rest of the ingredients in the crockpot.
  3. Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 8.

THAT’S IT! Top the chili with sour cream and cheese. Another variation I like to do is make it a chili bake.

Chili Bake Instructions:

  1. While the chili is cooking in the crock pot, put some penne pasta in a boiling pot of water and cook until tender.
  2. When the chili is done, combine the past into the chili and put in a glass baking tray.
  3. Top with cheese and boil in the over for three minutes, or until cheese is melted.

You Have To Accept Responsibility For Your Circumstances Before They Can Change

Today almost everywhere you turn people are trying to get a better life. they look to others who have been through similar struggles to help them overcome obstacles in there lives.

The advice given by these experts is always  good advice and quite often it is the same advice. However, many people still fail at achieving their goals that they have set before them. The biggest reason, in my opinion, that so many people fail at there goals is they only change externally never internally.

The greatest thing a man or woman can change is their mind, but often times many people set out to accomplish their goals by changing their circumstances. You have to realize that circumstances can only be changed by changing you. and that begins with your mind.

The focus of any individual has to be more on self-improvement not self-fulfillment. You see when we focus on changing ourselves that is self improvement, and the fulfillment when come as a by product of yourself improvement. If you don’t like your circumstances, think about how you got into the circumstance in the first place.

The very circumstances that we find ourselves in, believe it or not came from our own thinking. As Oscar Wilde said ” I ruined myself, and nobody great or small can be ruined except by his own hand”.

Finally, we have to learn to take responsibility for our circumstances in life, it is nobody’s fault but your own. There is no self help guru that can help you until you admit this to yourself.

Brussels Lockdown: 1,000 Cops Hunt Paris Suspect Salah Abdeslam

Sweeping overnight raids failed to trap one of Europe’s most-wanted men, leaving Belgium’s capital essentially on lockdown Monday for a third straight day.

Belgian officials said five more raids were carried out on Monday, hours after residents of Brussels were ordered to shelter in place as police searched nearly 20 properties around the European capital overnight.

Federal prosecutor Eric van der Sypt said 21 people in total had been detained as part of the large-scale operation. He earlier had said fugitive Salah Abdeslam — wanted in connection with the Paris terrorist attacks — was not among those taken into custody overnight.

Around 1,000 police officers were working on the Abdeslam manhunt, Belgium’s Interior Minister Jan Jambon told local radio. When asked how it was possible that the suspect could still be at large, Jamson said “he must have a lot of support on our soil.”

Authorities have said Abdeslam is considered “dangerous” and a potential accomplice to the attacks across Paris last week which left 130 dead. One of his brothers blew himself up in that terror spree, while another has repeatedly asked to turn himself in.

With Abdeslam still on the run, Brussels woke up to another day of troops and tanks on the streets.

Officials have put the Belgian capital on the highest form of alert, shuttering schools and the subway while ordering locals to avoid public spaces over what they’ve described as the “imminent” threat of Paris-style attacks.

NATO, which is based in Brussels, said its headquarters was open but that some visits had been cancelled and some staff asked to work from home.

The metropolitan area of Brussels is home to about 1.9 million people.

“We are concerned about an attack similar to the one that was carried out in Paris involving several individuals and maybe targeting attacks on several sites simultaneously,” Belgium’s Prime Minister Charles Michel said Sunday.

Locals have offered mixed sentiments over the heavy security measures.

“All the soldiers in the streets in the city… this is very depressing,” Julian Rensonnet told NBC.

Antonio Ponte, a teacher, said it was the “right decision” to close schools but that he hopes the security measures relax soon.

“It is bad for the children who are very scared,” he told NBC News. “When they saw what happened in Paris many were crying. ”

Warriors tied for best season start in NBA history

The Golden State Warriors are taking the court by storm in the 2015-2016 NBA season. The Warriors clenched a 15-0 record after defeating the Denver Nuggets 118-105 on Sunday night. The Warriors are tied with the ’48-’49 Washington Capitols and the ’93-’94 Houston Rockets for the best start in NBS history.

The Golden State Warriors could surpass the record for best NBA start if they defeat the Los Angeles Lakers this Tuesday night. The Warriors will have home-court advantage and plenty of fan support. After becoming NBS champions in the 2014-2015 season, the Golden State Warriors have seen some of the largest amount of fan support in franchise history.

“Whether or not we get it, it really doesn’t affect our ultimate goal of trying to win a championship,” said Luke Walton, the Golden State Warriors interim coach. “It would be something nice to get along the way.”

The Warriors faced a close match-up throughout the first half of the game against the Denver Nuggets. Klay Thompson, who scored 21 points in the game, hit a 3-pointer with 2:08 remaining in the second quarter, allowing the Golden State Warriors to lead for the rest of the game. Thompson sizable lead allowed for the Golden State Warriors to sit Stephen Curry for the entire fourth courter to get some rest. When the Warriors faed off against the Nuggets back in March however, fans were not happy to see Curry taken out of the game when the match-up was much closer. The Warriors have come a long way, and hope to take the title of winningest start to a season after their match-up against Los Angeles.
