Fall semester means football season. And with football games comes televised broadcasts, halftime shows, and large audiences watching at the field or on their screens. The excitement doesn’t end there; students from the Nicholson School of Communication and Media had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with UCF Athletics to produce a pre-game show to lead into the broadcast coverage for a UCF Football game.

The collaborative project Hitting the Field or HTF broadcasted the SHU vs UCF Game on 9/7. Associate Athletics Director Major Howe is excited for this to be a student produced show, with an HTF host, and a proper football analyst. Athletics booked Adrian Killings (UCF/Philadelphia Eagles).

Nick Cohen, a Journalism student and HTF Producer produced this special pre-game show, and he wrote the script based on Athletics scripting format. Patrick Previty from Sports Production was the host, with Andrew Montana (Journalism/Knightly Student) who recorded an interview with UCF Football Coach Gus Malzahn.

This is a valuable learning opportunity for students and will be really forward facing for NSCM and will certainly help foster our relationship with Athletics. Broadcast Specialist Nick Joiner also answered a couple of questions regarding what future opportunities can arise for NSCM students in the future.

What are the implications for NSCM students? Are there any opportunities that can arise in the future?

“This opportunity really gives the students real world opportunities. They not only represent the school really well, on a nationally broadcasted scale, but also really help to build their own experience and build their resumes.”

If this is a one-time thing, do you see more opportunities in the future (maybe a regular or ongoing occurrence?)

“We are slated to do the Cincinnati game. Based on such positive feedback from the first game.”
