It has been one year since the tragedy that has occurred with NSCM alumnus, Dylan Lyons. Lyons was a NSCM graduate who worked for Spectrum News 13 and was reporting at a homicide scene in Pine Hills on Feb. 22, 2023, when he was shot on the scene.
Exactly one year later, a panel discussion was held for the safety and self-care for journalists in honor of the fallen UCF alumnus. About 80 students and faculty attended.
Rick Brunson, Senior Instructor at NSCM, remembers Lyons and honors his memory as a talented journalist, student and friend. “I had a soul brother in Dylan,” Brunson said. His first interaction was in 2017 when Lyons walked into his classroom, shook his hand and was “distinguishable,” dressed in a coat and tie. “There was never any doubt in Dylan’s mind that he was going to be a television news reporter, and there was never any question in your mind that he knew he was going to be a television news reporter,” Brunson adds.
