Zoo in Copenhagen feeds Giraffe to Lions for Public Viewing

Earlier this week, A zoo in Copenhagen publicly killed an eighteen year old giraffe and afterward was fed to lions. The Zoo put down the Giraffe to prevent inbreeding with the populations of giraffes located in the populations database for the zoo. This was done to keep the genes located in the particular giraffe to himself and not to spread to others.
Sources from the zoo said that experts have put down close to 20-30 other animals for the exact same reason of preventing inbreeding. The Copenhagen Zoo uses a database to find possible mates for certain animals like the giraffes. According to the Zoo, they could not find a mate for the particular giraffe that had genes that weren’t similar to his. So instead the giraffe was decided to be put down by sedatives and then shot with a gun. Then in regards to keeping the life cycle of other animals correct, they fed the giraffe to the lions. Keep in mind, this entire process was open to pubic viewing for research and scientific purposes.

Giraffes are not an endangered animal, however over the last couple years they have been hunted increasingly for sport dropping their populations to close to threatening levels.

The strange part about this story is that according to sources and other news stations, the zoo in Copenhagen was offered huge sums of money (close to 500,000 Euros) from civilians and third parties. The zoo was also contacted by three other zoos  that offered to house the giraffe in separated venues and areas.

It truly is a strange string of events with such a beautiful animal. If the problem was just reproducing the question might be asked as to why couldn’t they just neuter the animal. My only possible guess is that many animals like giraffes and hippos are very difficult to perform these type of operations on. The first hippo to be successfully neutered was taken place this year at Animal Kingdom Park in Orlando, Florida.

To sum up my opinion on this event, I understand the stand the zoo made to try and keep these animals from being poisoned by genes. The giraffe could have been in much worse pain if it continued.

Viva Las Vegas: A Guide to The Best 21st Birthday

I recently tried planning the best 21st birthday ever. Mine. You only turn 21 once, and that fact gave me the biggest kick in the rear to make it memorable. I can finally drink! Legally. Where is the best place in the world to have your first drink? That’d be none other than Las Vegas! It’s mecca for this type of stuff. You can easily envision yourself and your friends having a blast, enjoying the various environments and drinks that Vegas can offer. Besides, it’s a celebration!

How do you make the most of a Vegas vacation? Well, to start off you have to set the price tag. What can I afford to spend on this trip? If it isn’t $400 or more, your time won’t be very enjoyable. But, since I have around eight months to save up, I shot for $700. With this, you’ve got yourself set.

The flight is the first major purchase. AirTran and Southwest are always the best bets. In fact, AirTran allows you to use PayPal’s Bill Me Later feature to pay it off over time, while building credit! February is the cheapest month to fly, with Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday as the cheapest days. Unfortunately $300 is about average for the flight out west.

As for accommodations, take advantage of the cheap weekday hotel rates and promos. You really don’t want to stay anywhere off the strip. The Luxor, Stratosphere, and The Flamingo are great stays for around $70 a night. But, the more people, the lower the price. Just check the occupancy limits.

With that in mind, don’t forget your friends! Create a Facebook group or an event page and start sending invites. Give them a price estimate early as they’ll want to save up, too. Comb through and only invite folks that’ll have the best chemistry together. Look for responsible individuals, not uptight or drunk and disorderly. Have some class. Set the plans in advance. They’re welcome to join you if they wish. Don’t tie yourself to your friends, as people do bail. Above all, take time to enjoy yourself!

Eat In! Why Going Out To Eat Is So Unhealthy For You: The 3 Worst Restaurants To Eat In America!

When it comes to eating healthy, everyone starts out the beginning of the week strong! They make all their meals at home, they start exercising everyday, and they stick to their healthy meal plan diet. But it almost always happens, to just about everyone. They start to get that craving for take out food. They’ll want to go out to eat with the girls or have their Sunday family meal at that ‘most talked about Mexican restaurant downtown’ and they’ll tell themselves that only for that night they will eat bad and starting the next day, it’s back to the health kick. But for most people, trying to start back up after back peddling one night is harder than most people think.  Nine times out of ten, most people that cheat during their diet and go off their meal plan for even one day, typically stay off their diet and never return to their meal plan until they start completely back up again months later.

While eating out is fun and delicious and almost always calls for a great time, the consequences of eating out go far beyond the positive aspects.  I will provide you with the three most fattening and unhealthy restaurants to eat in America and I promise you after you read the facts, you will be sticking to your diet and won’t have to worry about messing up with ‘eating out’ again. So here they are, your three most fatty, most heart attack causing restaurants in America:

  1. The number one, heavily loaded in grease restaurants in America is none other than The Cheesecake Factory. This American chain restaurant is awarded with having the highest calories, including fat and sodium counts, with a heavy, gut-busting 2,500 calories per dish, and that’s not even including the saturated fat counts! With a whopping 85 grams of saturated fat, that’s the fat equivalent to four complete days of heavy-duty meals. We’re not just talking about a couple of salads a day. Cheeseburgers and fries for breakfast, a thanksgiving meal for lunch and the leftovers for dinner! And that’s just one day out of the total four days it would take to eat like that just to equal the one dish of 85 grams of saturated fat at The Cheesecake Factory. So next time you consider eating out at this factory, you might want to consider how much time you will be spending in the gym to get rid of all those fat grams!
  2. At a close second and not far behind The Cheesecake Factory is your one and only California Pizza Kitchen.  While promoting healthy alternative meals in their menu is one of the newest editions to their menu, maintaining some of the most unhealthy, fatty, and greasy meals on their menu is not. As the battle for obesity in our country is becoming worse and worse throughout the years, California Pizza Kitchen is taking no part in trying to help the cause. In one of their famous pasta dishes, the ‘Pesto Cream Penne’ a whopping 1,350 calories is contained within this not so big meal. And don’t stop there! Add another 1,920 mg of sodium to this dish and you’re good to go! With the amount of salt within just one of these dishes at California Pizza Kitchen, it should make you skeptical of what their other meals, including their juicy, but greasy cheeseburgers have in them. While eating out may sound tempting, think about the pros and cons. If the cons outweigh the pros, in this case they don’t just outweigh but they completely devour the pros, then you should think about making your own healthy pasta at home, instead of the Penne Pasta that might leave you in the hospital!
  3. The third and final most fattening restaurant in America may come as a surprise for some because of their new healthy portioned menu, which is in no way healthy at all. Chili’s Restaurant Bar and Grill has an unbelievable average of about 2,300 calories per dish. And when it comes to the grams of fat, expect about 140 grams or so. While all of the burgers on the Chili’s menu are well over 1,000 calories, that isn’t the dish to watch out for! In disguise, the Quesadilla Explosion Salad is by far worst than any burger on the menu. At an astounding 1,300 calories, this ‘healthy alternative’ is nowhere near healthy, just an alternative for different ways to end up with high cholestrol. With 87 grams of fat, this salad contains more grams of fat than most salads, anywhere! So take this information with a grain of salt when thinking about whether you should be eating out or not, because if you decide you do want to eat out, it will be a little bit more than just a grain of salt.

I gave you the three most fattening, greasy, and unhealthy restaurants to eat at in America, so make the right choice and stay in. Have family night at home this Sunday and have everyone pitch in to cut down on time. Make something healthy and delicious and stay on track with your diet and healthy eating choices because I promise you, the moment you step foot in one of these restaurants, it will take a lot more than just a couple of days of eating healthy again to put you back on track!

37% of the U.S. Population Aren’t Working and Aren’t Looking

It been from 1978 since the the census reported that over 30% of the American population were out of work, however this new percentage also includes how just as many Americans aren’t looking for a job.

Out of 297 million Americans included in the Fall 2013 census, 91 million of them have been found to be jobless. It has shown, through records, that this population is necessarily searching for a job.

They way that they gather this information is by counting how many are unemployed and counting how many have not searched for a job in the month according to the local job agencies.

Some say that its been so long sense they’ve been laid off that they have been out of the system and have been replaced by the younger and more efficient.

However, this statistic does include stay at home parents, retired, elderly, young children, and students. Also it should be reassuring that about 50% of Americans, or 118 million, are employed full time and the 11 %, or 28 million, are employed part time. Also to go with those stats, there is about 10 million people who are “unemployed”, but records have indicated that they are searching for jobs.

One things for certain that the people who are wary of searching after being laid off are only going to keep getting replaced. Over time, this population should rise because there is more people today going to college and becoming educated to the point that they are employed out of college, depending on their academic success. Theres more and more parents investing in day care and less stay at home parenting also there is less and less retired people. These new trends are most likely going to have an effect on the unemployment status in this country along with shape people’s attitudes towards full and part-time employment.

‘Biggest Loser’ not Supporting Healthy Weight loss?

Last Tuesday was the season finale of The Biggest Loser, usually an episode of motivation and inspiration ending up being a little awkward for viewers. When Rachel Frederickson walked out to the awaiting viewers and contestants, she stunned the crowd with her weight loss. Immediately viewers took to twitter using #anorexic  to describe Frederickson. Fans of Frederickson tweeted about how concerning it was that she looked so small and fragile.

People were commenting on the concerned faces of the trainers and mentioning how they looked shocked. Dolvett Quince, Rachel’s trainer, commented on her shocking weight loss with ” Rachel’s health is and always has been my main concern.” Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, trainers on the biggest loser, did not have any comments regarding Rachel’s weight loss.

At the beginning of the season Rachel weighed 260 pounds. During her weight loss journey she was the front runner. Winning challenge after challenge and putting up big numbers every weigh-in.  At the season finale she gained the title of “The Biggest Loser” with the largest percentage of weight loss to date. She lost 155 pounds almost 60% of her starting body weight. According to the BMI chart this puts her in the underweight zone.

In an interview with “Today” she stated she was very proud of her weight loss and followed the advice of the Biggest Loser medical team. Rachel was once a competitive swimmer, now she says that she has found the athlete that she thought she had lost. Rachel talked about her diet stating that she ate five small meals of “super healthy” food choices and no more than 1600 calories a day. Along with exercising at every opportunity that she could. Now with the title of Biggest Loser under her belt and $250,000 in her wallet she plans on trying to gain muscle and keep improving her physical fitness.

Do the Biggest Loser viewers have good reason to be concerned or are they over analyzing Rachel’s weight loss and jumping to conclusion that it was an unhealthy way to lose weight? Frederickson says that she did everything healthy according to the medical team and NBC released a statement saying “We remain committed to helping contestants achieve healthy weight loss and live healthier lifestyles, and to inspiring viewers to do the same.”

Bill Gates Participates in an Amazing Online Mass Interview

For those of you who are not aware of the website Reddit.com, it is a social news and entertainment website where anyone across the world can submit content, whether it be original or just shared, in the form of links or text. Other users can then view this content and either vote “up or down” on the post to rank the post and filter it by popularity. Today’s biggest post (by far) is a massive online interview/discussion with the famous founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates. His text post simply asked the users of Reddit to ask him anything they wanted and he replied to many of the most popular posts.

The questions and answers involved in the “Ask me Anything” had a vast array of different content. These ranged from Mr. Gates’ biggest guilty pleasure (his personal plane), to his current role at Microsoft, and even involving his indulgence in playing Bridge and washing the dishes every night at his house. What really caught my attention however, was how truly humble and how much of a philanthropist Bill is, and more importantly, how interested and involved the community was with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill elaborated on how his foundation has been working with TerraPower to bring low cost energy that is totally reliable to countries around the world, discussed how close the foundation is to wiping out polio worldwide, and admitted that his greatest fear is having kids getting hurt or sick. Bill & Melinda have done some tremendous work by creating and distributing vaccines across the world to prevent the deaths of millions of children due to diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia, and they continue to push forward to allow all these children with so much potential to live a fruitful and meaningful life.

Before I numb everyone’s brains with all the information that’s in the “Ask me Anything” I would highly recommend everyone goes and gives it a read themselves. There’s nothing like seeing an extremely influential person such as Bill Gates showing their true colors to a mass amount of anonymous random people on the internet.

The post can be viewed here at:

Boston Bruins: Should they make a trade for a playoff run?

The National Hockey League is currently more than half-way through its regular season and the playoffs are rapidly approaching. Before the playoffs arrive there is still one more important event that will happen that can change every team’s outlook for the post season, and that is the trade deadline. The trade deadline provides an opportunity for certain teams to try and acquire some talent who could be the last piece of the puzzle and help them move towards a championship. For the Boston Bruins, they are currently leading the Atlantic Division and are second in the Eastern Conference behind the Pittsburgh Penguins, so they are looking rather good but they could still look to add in a key piece that I think would be beneficial for them.

Ever since the Bruins have lost their second best defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to a torn ACL, and is out for the year, the defense and the goals that they have allowed have slightly increased. It’s obvious that this organization could use the trade deadline to possibly add a top tier defenseman to pair along-side captain Zdeno Chara. The Bruins have one of the deepest rosters in the entire league, so they have some assets that other teams could look at and could possibly give up some of those assets in exchange for a top defenseman.

With this acquisition the Bruins can patch up that big hole on the defense and can really hold opponents to fewer goals, which would really be beneficial for a playoff run that hopefully can end with a Stanley Cup.

The Fear of Getting Old: What To Do About Our Brains

As a society our health consciousness is increasing. Eating healthy and exercising is becoming more common. Gyms and health food stores are popping up everywhere and it seems as though Americans are starting to focus more on healthier bodies and longer lives.

What about our brains? Are we forgetting the most important part of our functioning bodies?

On average, Americans live to the age of 80. One in three girls live to a hundred and one in four boys live to a hundred.  Our brains’ performance peaks around the age of forty. We are now outliving our brains.

In the last thirty or forty years of our lives our problem solving abilities, decision making, speed of thinking, and memory are dwindling.

Exercising our brains is just as good for us as exercising our bodies because what is a healthy body without a healthy mind?

Scientists encourage us to stop looking at everything on a surface level. Instead of explaining a movie or book to someone by reiterating the story with details, look at the story with a deeper meaning. Think and then explain what you brought away from the story.

We are also encouraged to stop multi tasking. As our lives get busier and busier we tend to focus on more projects with less concentration. In reality our work suffers because we are not paying as much attention to detail.

Scientists also suggest more physical activity. Not only does exercise better our bodies, it betters our minds. Exercising increases heart rate, which in turn allows more blood flow to your brain, stimulating memory centers.

The combination of exercise and involved thinking is sure to boost brain activity and a longer life.

Everglades Restoration Underway as Saving the Savannas Gains New Focus.

In recent years, lawmakers have paid closer attention to environmental issues after the passing of Pres. Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) Initiative.

The Everglades National Wildlife Refuge, a project of AGO created in order to protect lands spanning from Orlando down to Lake Okeechobee, has recently seen new life after ten acres were donated by an environmental organization. Federal officials are planning on purchasing 140-thousand more acres to be added to the refuge in an attempt to salvage one of the only remaining long leaf pine savannas in North America.

Additionally, another product of the focus on maintaining the Everglades stems from Gov. Rick Scott’s water clean-up plan. After many delays, the project is now underway as a tax increase on local sugar farmers will go towards removing the waste the farms release into the Everglades.

Ms. Callye Foster, a local environmental activist and president of the UCF student organization known as IDEAS (Intellectual Decisions on Environmental Awareness Solutions), described the projects as incredibly beneficial to the environment stating, “the Everglades […] are such a vital part of Florida’s ecosystem [that] it would be very detrimental if we did not do all we could to protect the area.”

Indeed, with such issues as pollution and global warming coming to the forefront of today’s agenda, both projects have great potential to lead the world towards a more sustainable existence.
