Missouri’s Michael Sam Makes History Before NFL Draft

In today’s day in age, especially in sports, there is a strong trend in acceptance amongst teammates and there has been no better example up to now it truly how the culture has changed. Sunday evening marked the first time where an NFL prospect came out and stated he was “openly gay.” Missouri’s Michael Sam has had a tough life. He has seen his brother shot right before his eyes, he has two brothers in jail and he promised himself that he would not travel down that same path. So, when it came time to openly come out to his teammates and subsequently the world, it was an easy thing to do for the 6 foot 2 linebacker.

Coming off of an award winning season for not only Missouri but Smart, Smart is looking to become the first active NFL player to openly come out as being gay and the game of football and sports alike are ready for this to take place. When looking around the league, homosexuality hits home with the man at top, the commissioner and his predecessor, and have an acceptance that hits home. Commissioner Roger Goodell has an openly gay brother and it is not strange or odd that more and more gay athletes are coming out and being a viable part of a winning process. Paul Tagliabue, the commissioner prior to Goodell has an openly gay son, proof that the people at the top have a close tie to homosexuality and expect and believe the NFL is a place where athletes of all beliefs can compete at the highest level. Smart is looking to make history in the upcoming NFL draft and hopes the pave the way for future openly gay athletes.

Are People Too Reliant On Technology?

This past week I encountered quite a few obstacles.  For one, my car was acting up, yet again, and I had to take it in.  There went my way to school.  Also, I was not able to finish a project due to lack of compatibility between software and different machines.  And I still have yet been able to turn it in…

But my thought is, are we too reliant on our technology?  No matter where you go it’s there.  On the road telling you how fast you’re going, items on the menu at different restaurants, and of course right in front of me writing this blog post.  My school work is heavily influenced by technology being a digital media minor.  Using technology is part of the curriculum.  But when something happens to it…. what do you do next?

Once your device fails it is nearly impossible to fix that situation.  Without the funds or know how, you’re basically out of luck.  We put so much effort in getting the best equipment and learning as much as we can, and all of it can be so easily destroyed.

Most people today, at least in the United States, would be lost without their current devices.  We’ve adapted so far to this technological generation that we couldn’t even go back.

Calendars, tests, homework, work, money, you name it!  We are subject to what our technology feels like doing.  We take advantage of the fact that we can do everything on one device.  But have you ever wondered what would you do without it?

Kinect Sensor Monitoring Korean Boarder

The Kinect made by Microsoft is being used to monitor the Korean border since August of last year. The program used for the Kinect was created by Jae Kwan Ko who is a South Korean programmer. The device is monitoring the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea.

The software is designed to detect the difference between humans and animals. Once it detects a human it sends an alert to he nearest guard. Ko claims a newer version of the software will be able to detect heart rates and heat. These updates will probably come when they use the Xbox One’s Kinect since it’s able to detect heart rates and heat with its more advance technology.

This makes me wonder how easy it could be for someone to hack into the Xbox and Xbox One’s Kinect and sees what you’re doing. It might be as easy as hacking into a computers camera, but the Kinect can do more than see you. It will be able to record your heartbeat and scan your body in better detail than an average computer camera. If this technology is available to citizens, then what is available to the government? There must be companies out there trying to sell this type of technology to our cities so they can watch over us, and control crime. There are cameras around major cities like in Boston since that’s how they identified the bombers during the marathon. Most of these cameras are operated by people and don’t have the technology to identify each person, but how much longer will it be till they install such equipment.

Marriage and Divorce: Falling in Love with the idea of Marriage

In today’s culture, divorce is a very common aspect of people’s lives. Young or old, whether it’s you or your parent’s, many people are getting divorced. The divorce rate is currently 50%. The rate of subsequent marriages increases even more! Being the child of a divorced marriage, I know first hand the effects a child and the parents face through out their lives. Children of divorce suffered from depression, failed in school, and got in trouble with the law. Children with depression and conduct disorders showed indications of those problems predivorce because there was parental conflict pre divorce. Boys are more externally symptomatic than girls, they act out their anger, frustration and hurt. They may get into trouble in school, fight more with peers and parents. Girls tend to internalize their distress. They may become depressed, develop headaches or stomach aches, and have changes in their eating and sleeping patterns

The reason I believe that the divorce has grown so substantially recently is that people who want to get married are consumed with the idea of the perfect wedding, the big ring, the beautiful dress, and the best ceremony. They aren’t so concerned about the person they are actually marrying. Sure, they may like them or even love them at first, but people think they can just marry anyone and it’ll be easy and no work. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as people believe, and end up stressed out by the other person that they never truly knew very well, and may even begin to dislike them.

The Development of Digital Media Brings Opportunities for Niche News Seeking

The incredibly rapid development of American journalism has brought the United States a long way since the days of paperboys in street corners. American journalism is currently in a transformational phase, which culminates the era of dominant newspapers and influential network news divisions and ushers in an era in which the gathering and distribution of news is much more widespread and accessible.

The next big technological innovation that is affecting journalism is the Internet. The term “digital media” refers to the product of entities such as bloggers, public broadcasting stations and university-run news services. Together, they are creating a greater variety of independent reporting, but also a different definition of news. Although there seems to be a newfound market for small independent reporting to develop, I am inclined to think that there is certainly something to gain when there are stable organizations that work collaboratively to produce quality reporting, investigations and analysis. This is why for me; the rise of “e-news” just makes it more up to the readers to surf through several sources in order to obtain actual facts. Not only that, there is a challenge to finding news articles relevant to myself as I surf the web. It seems that webpages that often become people’s homepages for news such as Yahoo, MSN, AOL and even those that focus on a specific category such as ESPN for sports and CNN for politics are driven to social media as a measuring device for news popularity and interactions with the public. Ultimately, news is becoming more of a personal scavenger hunt rather than a narrow stream of news where everyone drinks the same thing. I am very eager to witness the long term effects the Internet will have on American journalism.

No.1 Offense vs No.1 Defense: A Historic Superbowl Matchup

The Superbowl is the final game of the season in the National Football League. The two best teams in the league play in a highly anticipated and incredibly glorified game to see who gets to take the Lombardi trophy and all the prestige that comes with it.

This year’s matchup was probably among one of the most anticipated ever. On one side there is the Denver Broncos and their record setting offense led by future hall of fame quarterback Peyton Manning; and on the other is the Seattle Seahawks and their stout number one defense. The Denver Broncos led the league in passing touchdowns with 55 (the second team in the league only had 39), and total yards with 7,317(most all time). However, the defense that met them led the league in turnovers generated and taken away. They also allowed the fewest total yards all season (including through the playoffs). Although the Seahawks’ defensive numbers weren’t all record setting throughout the season, they proved to be one of the best ever and made the ultimate statement in the biggest stage in the game against statistically the most productive offensive unit to date. The Superbowl’s final score favored the Seahawks 42-8.

In my opinion, this win has propelled this year’s Seattle Seahawks  team into the kind of stardom that has true fans of the game talking for years .

Incentives for menial labor and why they are important in a productive society

People working in ‘dead end jobs’ understand how society really works. Jobs at retailers, grocery stores, hotels, theme parks, sanitation, restaurants, and others only offer menial labor for an absolute minimum of wages. We cannot have a ‘civilized society’ without these jobs as they give freedom to those who arguably contribute more to society to do more so. It also gives people who are looking forward to becoming more productive something to look forward to as well as experience dealing with other people.

The problem arises when you have minimum wage employees who become stuck doing something they don’t want to do. Young people, either on the road to higher education or those who become stranded/stalled on the way, know just how little they are getting paid and how replaceable they are. They see people on a daily basis frequent their place of work knows that those same customers are spending what would be a week’s wages for the employee in a few minutes. They become jaded and start to feel stranded and a sense of abandonment from this ‘successful society’ they so desperately wish to be a part of.

The sense of longing for a prosperous life, or the American version of it anyway, can trace its origin to the parents of the pervious generation and the constant encouragement and conditioning that working these types are jobs are a sign of failure in the grand scheme of things. While these jobs are absolutely necessary, society has told us that working them should be beneath us, while now telling us that not having any job is just as bad.

What needs to happen is a changing of the foundation for how our young people need to view work ethic, and it starts with the parents and employers. Parents, who have salary jobs, should not encourage the shunning of low paid positions and encourage their children to do that job with the best of their efforts. Employers, and especially middle management, should encourage their workers with positive reinforcement and try to work with them, as opposed to the all too common approach of reminding them how replaceable they are.

Another side effect of menial pay for menial labor is the lack of enticement from minimum wage. Minimum wage just encourages workers to the do the minimum required not to get fired, and does absolutely nothing to incentives a good job. Workers know that because of the lack of wages, they need to do very little, and focus more on looking busy than actually being busy. For the sake of society and the well being of the workers that run it, I can only hope that overtime such changes take hold. I will end with one of my favorite quotes from comedians Chris Rock, “You know what that means when someone pays you minimum wage? It’s like, “Hey if I could pay you less, I would, but it’s against the law.“.

Why American Hustle shouldn’t win Oscar for Best Director

This year there are several great films that have been nominated for Oscars. Some of them include “Gravity”, “12 Years a Slave”, and many more. Of those I believe there is one that shouldn’t make the cut for receiving an Oscar for best director, and that would be American Hustle. It was dull and especially not funny.

The movie itself was extremely dull in my opinion. I had a hard time trying to keep track of what was going on. For example in the film it follows two con artists who were caught by the FBI and were enlisted to catch crooked politicians. Now with that being said after watching the movie I couldn’t tell you anything more then that. It was so hard to watch the movie because it felt like a sequence of scenes matched up instead of a plot.

My next point is that it was not funny at all. The film was listed as a comedy and as I was watching it I think I might have chuckled maybe four times through out the entire movie. I even thought the first time i watched it that it was a drama, but when someone pointed out that it was a comedy I couldn’t believe it. A film listed as a comedy that couldn’t deliver to make an audience laugh is a complete failure. And for that film to be nominated for best director is astounding.

I don’t feel that the director did a good enough job to win the Oscar.  I especially think that there were better movies that should have deserved it more than American Hustle. I feel that the movie didn’t deliver in the slightest and was entertaining and should not win best director for those reasons.

Russia killing off stray dogs for Olympics

The 2014 Sochi Olympics have been very controversial. Russia has been heavily criticized for its stance on LGBT rights, and now they are receiving negative criticism from animal rights activists. In an effort to “clean up” the city of Sochi, the government has sanctioned the killing of stray dogs.  It is not uncommon for Countries to take extensive measures to look good in front of the world when hosting international events such as the Olympics and the World cup. However, many times their efforts backfire and they receive criticism from local and worldwide communities. For example, in Brazil people are angry the government is spending so much money on the world cup when the country is struggling economically. Hosting an international event can bring great pride to a country, but it can also bring shame and embarrassment. Many local citizens in Sochi condemn the killing of these stray dogs.  Activists say the methods of killing the dogs, which include shooting or poisoning them, is inhumane.

The Government is concerned with the amount of stray dogs, as they can be troublesome during the olympics. They often wonder into events and there is the possibility they’ll bite or attack someone. Many feel the government isn’t doing enough to find alternative methods of dealing with their stray dog problem. There aren’t many shelters being built and its no surprise; after all, its much easier to shoot 100 dogs than to build a shelter to house and feed them. Even though hundreds of dogs have disappeared from the streets, russian officials assure that only sick dogs are being killed. In my opinion, this is a hard issue to solve; even though i don’t agree with Russia’s methods, ideally there also can’t  be hundreds of stray dogs roaming the streets. But maybe if it wasn’t for the rush and commotion to prepare for the olympics, some of these dogs may have gotten a second chance.

Nearly 9 Million Pounds of Meat Recalled in Northern California

Approximately 9 Million pounds of meat were recalled from Northern California meat company, Rancho Feeding Corporation (RFC), due to the meat originating from “diseased and unsound animals” that were not properly inspected. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), RFC processed meat from the diseased animals without proper inspection from the agency.

“Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce,” the FSIS reported. The Petaluma company made the recall. Although there were no reported illnesses in conjunction with these products it still poses a safety hazard to the consumers who buy meat. The Rancho Feeding Corporation were unable to be reached as reporters from CNN and other news agencies tried to get a statement from the company.

A variety of products included in the recall are beef carcasses and parts such as heads, cheeks, lips, livers, feet and tongues in boxes of 20 pounds and bigger. Also Forty-pound boxes of veal bones and 60-pound boxes of veal trim were included  in the recall.

Now that the company is under investigation hopefully it will spark a revolution for other companies to have their products inspected by federal agents to ensure the safety of not only consumers but manufacturers and distributors as well. Our country has been facing other issues with meat such as  Mad Cow disease also known as BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy)which is a progressive neurological disorder of cattle that results from infection by an unusual transmissible agent called a prion. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as of April 2012 23 cases of BSE were identified in North America with 4 in the U.S. and 19 in Canada.
