Legend Lost!!! Actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman Passes Away in New York!!!

With an incredible track record of acclaimed films and numerous awards under his belt, Academy Award winning actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman was tragically found deceased in his New York apartment on Super Bowl weekend. The 46 year old actor was reported to have been preparing to spend the day with his kids. When he didn’t show up, suspicion rose and investigation ensued. Hoffman was discovered dead at his apartment with a syringe in his arm. This brought about the indication that a drug overdose was the probable cause of death. Investigators also discovered mass amounts of heroin and various prescription drugs present in his apartment.

In the hours and even days after his death, actors, comedians, and celebrities have expressed their undenying sadness and grief for one of Hollywood’s best actors. Big names such as Whoopi Goldberg, Dean DeHann, Seth Rogan, Viola Davis, and others have expressed their shock and emotion to the news.

In terms of the projects that Hoffman had lined up and were currently filming, Hoffman was just about to finish up his run in The Hunger Games Mockingjay films. Lionsgate Studios released a statement reporting that Hoffman had completed all of his scenes for Mockingjay Part 1 and only had a week left of filming for Part 2. The studio insisted that the tragic death will not gravely effect the outcome of both upcoming installments.

As the world remembers one of the great actors in Hollywood, Philip Seymour Hoffman is survived by his wife Mimi O’Donnell along with his three children, son Cooper and daughters Tallulah and Willa.

Justin Bieber’s Unfavorable Life in the Spotlight

It is a gift to have the freedom to write a blog post for this class about anything I would like. As a college student, we don’t always have the privilege to be able to write about anything on our mind and get a grade for it.

Therefore, I am choosing to write about Justin Bieber’s recent “wrongdoings” that have been in the tabloids and somehow a topic of world news because I can and I am very passionate about doing so.

This might seem like a long ranting list, but here it goes: cursing out people in public, walking around shirtless, having numerous tattoos, getting a DUI, turning themselves in for a misdemeanor, going to strip clubs, underage drinking, smoking illegal substances, or egging a neighbor’s house, doesn’t that compare to regular teenage activities? Unfortunately, in some instances, it sounds to me like adult behaviors as well. I am in no way condoning to any of these actions. Everyone matures at a different speed.

In my opinion, the fact that over 100,000 signatures have gone to the US government to deport a teenager doing nonsense activities is despicable and rude. There are people in this country that I would like to have the option to sign a petition to deport them, but I wouldn’t waste my time and energy to do so. When I went on Facebook and Twitter last week and saw hate and cruel words toward Justin Bieber it really hurt me. Especially coming from some people who I know for a fact have committed the same, if not worse, crimes or activities that Justin has.

If Justin didn’t follow his dreams, and post YouTube videos for family members when he was younger, he wouldn’t be in this position right now. He wouldn’t be making millions of dollars a year to support him and his family. He wouldn’t be able to go all around the world to help poor communities build schools and raise money. He wouldn’t be the leader for granting most wishes for the Make A Wish Foundation. He wouldn’t be working a job that he loves and having millions of fans worldwide enjoying his talents. He would be in his second year of college. Possibly writing a blog post about another celebrity in his current situation, like I am right now. He would be making these bad decisions, but without the media critiquing his every move and instead with his friends and family critiquing him.

We college students should look at Justin Bieber and aspire to follow our dreams to help people around the world, while making ourselves happy at the same time. We must believe he will see our reactions to his behaviors as constructive criticism, not with slander or hate. We should strive to respect others, even if poor decisions are made.

How Netflix redefined the Television Industry.

Established in 1997, Netflix Incorporated started as a DVD-by-mail rental service for home entertainment and by 2009 was offering a collection of 100,000 titles on their on-demand streaming website. This Los Gatos-based company is now leading the market and because of their much acclaimed list of original shows, Netflix managed to add 1.44 million new subscribers world-wide by their third quarter of last year alone. Bringing 2013 revenue up to $4 Billion.

After the release of their highly-anticipated original shows, Netflix’s stocks went from around $180 to approximately $370 per share in a period of less than a year. Political drama, “House Of Cards“, with leading man Kevin Spacey; along with other new scripted shows like the female penitentiary dramedy,Orange is the New Black“, created by Jenji Kohan, and Jason Bateman’s “Arrested Development” are some of the shows that continue to raise the bar and give conventional made-for-television series a run for their money.

At the 2013 Primetime Emmys, Netflix received 14 nominations all-together and took home three statuettes for “House of Cards”, including Outstanding Direction for David Fincher’s work on the Pilot, Outstanding Cast in a Drama and Best Cinematography in a Single-Camera Series. Both top shows, “Cards” and “Orange” are set to release their second seasons in the upcoming months.

Bottom line is that Netflix’s big leap paid off and showed the industry new ways of producing and marketing independent, but still high quality shows while recruiting incredible amounts of subscribers each year.

Decision for Death Penalty in Boston’s Bombings Case gives Bostonians mixed feelings

In Boston, the Justice Department have decided to come to the decision of a death penalty for suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Him and his brother, who had died during officials pursuit of the suspects, are responsible for the deaths of three people and around 200 other peoples injuries during the Boston Marathon in April of 2013. Though there are many in not just Boston but all of Massachusetts who want justice for the terrors of that day, a surprising number of people in the state are against the death penalty being place on Tsarnaev. Including the mayor of Boston, Martin J. Walsh. According to the New York Times, Massachusetts actually got rid of the death penalty back in 1984.

The New York Times reached out to the families of the deceased and wounded and even went on Twitter to find go more in depth of the reaction to the death penalty. Most of the families’ comments were ready to just move on with there lives and let the jurors decide on his sentence. The Boston Globe took a poll back in September with respondents from Massachusetts on whether to give Tsarnaev life in jail, or the death penalty: 57% were just fine with giving him a life sentence while the other 33% wanted the death penalty.

Walsh, a newly elected mayor, has always been against the death penalty; he even, back when he was a lawmaker, voted against it. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. had the final say on whether to authorize prosecutors to seek death penalty and now up to the jurors on whether or not they should follow through.

Super Ratings for the Super Bowl

This years Super bowl raised the bar for the yearly event. The commercials are typically the brow raisers for fans each year but this year the Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos featured an all star line-up fr the half time celebrations. The entertainment featured the hit sensations Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Two huge acts when it comes to not only hit songs but also huge performers live on stage which is exactly what this event needed. The last couple years have not have such great performance so it was refreshing to see a great show.

But when it came down to the actual game, the show was actually completely one-sided as the Seahawks completely manhandled the Broncos. Before the game started the media played the game out to be a huge match up of the leagues best offense with the Bronocos and Peyton Manning and the best defense with the Seahawks. Well as the game continued the Broncos only scored a mere eight points throughout the entire game and the Seattle defense actually scored 21 points simply with the interceptions and fumbled caused. That’s quite impressive if you think about the most popular player of the year in Peyton Manning could barely get to 100 yards today. 8 points on offense was actually the lowest amounts of points the Broncos have scored in a game with Manning behind center.

I was personally rooting for the Seahawks because I liked the younger and faster team in Seattle. In the end, this game will go down as two powerhouse teams of these year battling out.

Football is over…Now what?

With the Super Bowl marking the end of the NFL season and college football already past its expiration, what’s left in the sports world to be seen?  The answer is still more football, or fútbol for that matter.  This summer marks the start of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where nations who have qualified will compete.

The World Cup is played for every 4 similar to the Olympics but is strictly soccer.  The USA, known for its love of American football actually has a very good team regardless of soccer not being the most popular sport with our country’s youth.  USA soccer is ranked 14 overall by Fifa for this current year but has a tough task ahead after being put in the “death group” this year.  The group of powerhouses include Germany, Ghana, and Portugal.  Germany respectively finished 3rd in 2010, while Ghana was the team to knock the USA out of the tournament.

Big names in the tournament set to make their appearance in early June include Neymar(Brazil), Lionel Messi(Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo(Portugal), and many more planning on helping their teams take home the coveted cup.  The tournament has been played nineteen previous times with the host nation this year, Brazil, holding the most victories all-time with five cups.  The most recent World Cup in 2010 was won by Spain, a virtual mecca for soccer stars in La Liga, surprisingly for their first win ever.

Tune in this summer to see if the USA can make a mark on the world’s biggest soccer tournament and the most popular sporting event in the world behind the Olympics.

The Greatest Regular Season Quarterback, who doesn’t belong in the Post Season

All it would take would be for him to win this final game. The news reporters stated that he would be the best quarterback every in the NFL, if he beat the Seattle Seahawks. Most people were ready to brand him, “GOAT,” the greatest of all time. Well, all of these events did not happen. This individual did not win his final game. This individual not only lost this game, which just so happens to be the Super bowl, but was annihilated. How does one go from almost being crowned the greatest of all time, to now not even in the conversation? Ask Peyton Manning.

Peyton Manning is the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. On February 2nd, Peyton had a chance to potentially become the best quarterback in the history of the NFL. However, he would have to go through the Seattle Seahawks. Now, the Seahawks were not just a regular team. This team sported the toughest defense in the NFL. This defense was rated number one in turnovers and points allowed in a game. In order for Peyton to be crowned king, he would truly have to overcome a “smash mouth” adversary.  Now, here is the key. Every one who watched the Super bowl, knows how the story ends. Peyton lost the game.

But it was not exactly that he lost was the problem. It was how he lost. Peyton Manning, who had the tag of the greatest regular season quarterback, was crushed.  The final score of the game was 43 to 8, Seahawks. How does an individual, who won the scoring record, loose by that many points? It is easy to say that Peyton did not have any help or that his other teammates did not play to the right level.  At the end of the day, truth be told, Peyton Manning was not good enough to win this game. Therefore, he is not good enough to be in the “Greatest of All Time” discussion.

Internet drinking game claims two lives

The Neknomiate craze that has gone viral has gone too far after claiming the lives of two young men in Ireland of the weekend. The ‘game’ involves a person on camera skolling or ‘chugging’ a bottle of alcohol and then dares someone to do the same. The video is then posted to social media platforms; Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and whoever is next nominated does the same which has caused an ongoing ripple effect.

It started in my hometown of Perth, Western Australia but the tragic deaths took place on the other side of the world in Dublin, Ireland. This highlights how dangerous this behaviour is the era of social media because it wasn’t long before young people around the world took the game to ridiculous extremes.

19-year-old Jonny Byrne died when he jumped off a bridge as part of the dare. His body wasn’t found until more than 5 hours later. His brother made a public plea on Twitter for people to stop the Neknominations but it didn’t end there.

Also in Dublin, 22-year-old Ross Cummins was found unconscious in the floor of his home due to an alcohol overdose while playing the game. He was pronounced dead upon arrival to hospital.

With all the dares posted on social media for the world to see, it is surprising that more people hadn’t already lost their lives from the stupidity. One video which circulated in Australia involved two men skolling beers while hanging from a moving helicopter without safety restraints.

When people were killed taking part in the ‘planking’ craze in 2011, our attention was brought to how social media can promote endangering lives just to get a good photo or 15 seconds of fame. If it hasn’t ended here, it makes me worried about what the next social media craze will be.

9/11 truther crashes Super Bowl XLVIII postgame show

It didn’t take much for thirty year old Brooklyn resident Matthew Mills to get through multiple layers of MetLife Stadium’s (what was thought to be) tough security layers. The man simply entered the stadium posing as a man late to work on the night the New Jersey stadium was hosting Super Bowl XLVII.

His tricks were not elaborate and cunning like you would expect to see in a James Bond film – Mills recalled in an interview “I just said I was running late for work and I had to get in there, it was that simple.” At the end of the game he had penetrated every layer of security and found himself in the Super Bowl’s media tent. His plan was becoming a success, and moments later his message would broadcast to a national audience through ESPN and other news outlets who were broadcasting a soon-to-be interrupted interview with MVP Malcolm Smith live to millions.

“Investigate 9/11, 9/11 was perpetrated by people within our own government.” These are the words that the visibly anxious middle aged man spoke after grabbing the microphone away from Malcolm Smith while on live television. Matthew Mills is a self described “9/11 Truther”. These are people who believe that the attacks on September 11th 2001 were a conspiracy run by the US government, and Mills used the opportunity presented to him in order to get this message out to a mass audience.

Although Matthew Mills was still subject to pat downs and searches before his stunt, and immediately arrested afterwards, this event raises many concerns over the security at massive sporting events. Messages to the private security contractor SAFE who was in charge of this event were not returned at the time this story was published by NJ.com.

A Bittersweet Deal: Google Sells Motorola Mobility to Lenovo

Last week, news broke that Lenovo would buy Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 Billion, giving the Chinese PC manufacturer a respectable share of the smartphone handset market. This move has caused nearly as much unrest in the mobile industry as the announcement that Google would buy Motorola Mobility from it’s original parent, Motorola, Inc., back in 2011. Both moves caused quite the commotion, and both were a little bittersweet, but overall, two sales later, I dare to say these were some of the most important deals in the mobile space, and the industry would be a much worse place if these deals hadn’t happened.
In 2010, Motorola, Inc. was loosing money left and right. It’s handset business wasn’t doing very well, with a marketshare many times smaller than it had been just a few years earlier when the mobile space really took off, thanks to Samsung’s skyrocketing success. It’s business solutions department was doing okay, but not keeping up with the likes of IBM, Cisco, and others.
Meanwhile, Google was being indirectly attacked left and right, as it’s Android mobile operating system was at the center of literally hundreds of patient lawsuits, most notably the epic that was the Apple vs. Samsung suit, HTC vs. Nokia, Motorola vs. Sony-Ericsson, among many others.
It was soon decided that Motorola, Inc. would split, with the business solutions being renamed Motorola Solutions, and the consumer electronics business would be spun off as Motorola Mobility. Within months of the announcement, Google would acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion, a deal that would include not only the handset business, but hundreds of patients which Google could use to defend the Android OS. However, there was some worry that with Google directly competing with it’s Android partners, those partnerships could become strained.
Google made good on it’s promise to keep it’s in house Android team separate from Motorola, patient lawsuits started to subside, and Google helped Motorola climb back into contention in the handset market. After the success of the DROID RAZR line of handsets, the newly Google owned Motorola released the wildly successful Moto X, followed by the budget-centered Moto G.
Now, three years after Google bought Motorola Mobility and practically turned the entire industry around, they’ve decided to flip Motorola, selling it off to Lenovo for $2.91 Billion. Before you start scratching your head at the nearly $10 Billion loss, Google is keeping all of those patients that came along with the deal 3 years ago. All in all, Google is coming out ahead.
This new deal is almost as important to the industry as the Google/Motorola deal was 3 years ago. Not only is Google keeping the patents, which will only further secure Android’s future, but by no longer directly competing with it’s Android partners, relationships can mend between Google and those partners, which will lead to further improvement of Android. This can be seen by the deal made recently between Google and Samsung, who’ve had a love/hate relationship for years, ever since Samsung started heavily skinning Android and directly competing with Google on the services offered through Android, replacing them with Samsung alternatives. Now, Google and Samsung will work together to make Samsung’s spin on Android beneficial to both companies.
And Those worried about all the good done by Google at Motorola Mobility need not worry, Lenovo is experienced at buying successful brands and keeping them that way. Most notably when Lenovo bought IBM’s highly successful “ThinkPad” line of PCs back in 2005, which is arguably even more successful now.
Overall, it is bittersweet to see this deal, as many ‘Googlerola’ fans were excited to see what Google might do with Motorola, especially with their pure Google experience Nexus and Google Play Edition lines of devices. But Lenovo is a worthy successor to Google, and this deal will only help further the mobile industry.
