India’s Supreme Court Rules Gay Sex Will Continue to be a Crime

Gay marriage has been quite the topic of debate here in the United States for decades and is a pivotal movement in the human rights campaign. While the rights and laws regarding the LGBT community here in the United States have been seen as extremely unlawful and unjust to many Americans, multiple countries are far behind when it concerns these basic human rights. Countries such as India, Uganda, and Russia have straight out banned homosexuality and consider the act of it an actual crime.

In December of last year, the Indian supreme court overturned a 2009 Delhi High Court judgement decriminalizing homosexuality. Less than one week ago there were multiple petitions from the government and gay rights activists to review the decision, but they were rejected by the supreme court. They stated that only Parliament had the ability to change section 377, a law that dates back to India’s colonial era, banning gay sex as “unnatural”. The court deemed that it was unconstitutional to strike down the law, as it was lawmakers decisions to do so. The deeply religiously rooted and conservative government set the punishment for gay sex up to a whole ten years in prison.

With this law still in effect and growing opposition to homosexuality only worsening in places such as Uganda and Russia, what can the average American do to promote the movement and hopefully bring about some change across the world? Well, to begin with I believe we can start by changing how our country views homosexuality as a whole, by voting and speaking to local politicians about changing the bans on homosexual marriage.

Florida itself has made a huge leap forward by having six same-sex couples sue the state because of the state’s refusal to grant them marriage licenses. With the rest of the world looking at how homosexuality is not a big deal at all and just a natural part of life here in the United States, hopefully we’ll be able to bring about a bigger change across the world.

Real Life Castaway Found of The Coast of the Marshall Islands

Many people have seen the hit movie Cast Away, with Tom Hanks and his lovable volleyball Wilson, and it made $233,632,142! Although millions of people loved the movie, those same people would never want to be in that situation. Well, this was the case for Jose Salvador Alvarenga, a 37 year old fisherman from Mexico. According to Alvarenga, in December 2012, he left Mexico in a 23-foot fiber glass boat with a teenage companion named Ezekiel for what was supposed to be a day trip of fishing. A storm blew their boat off course, and caused them to become disoriented and adrift. He said that Ezekiel died a month later.

More than a year after Alvarenga said he left Mexico, he said he swam ashore on Ebon, a tiny atoll in the Marshall Islands, where news of his remarkable tale of survival quickly spread. The long-haired fisherman, who had a scruffy beard, smiled and waved to a crowd of onlookers as he clutched what would have been one of his first cans of Coca-Cola since he washed up on the remote Marshall Islands, some 5,500 miles away from Mexico. Despite the ordeal, Alvarenga was still chubby faced. Alvarenga said he survived 13 months drifting in the Pacific Ocean by eating fish, birds, and turtles, but officials expressed cautious skepticism at the man’s story as they worked to verify details. The man also claims he scooped up little fish that swam alongside his drifting boat and ate them raw, while also drinking bird blood to quench his thirst. Alvarenga is currently undergoing a medical check in the Marshall Islands, and once Alvarenga finishes his medical check, he will be headed home.

Technology Is Taking Over Our Youth!

If our youth is the future then why are we hurting their chances to succeed?  I work as a part time server and it absolutely appalls me that parents bring Ipads and head phones to the dinner table and place their kids in zombie mode during “family time”, whatever happened to good old crayons? Now parents seem to think that sticking kids in front of the TV will make their life easier but what they don’t realize is that the amount of exposure they have can effect their brain development.

There has been scientific evidence that proves that children that watch Television for more than one hour a day, have less developed parts of the brain. I have little siblings and I am astonished how teachers allow children in first and second used calculators, this is the reason why kids cant do simple math. Studies show that an active individual is more alert and ready to focus in school, students however are becoming lazier because less physical education is being encouraged by their parents.

We are seeing our society spiral downward as we are becoming robot. The days where we were encouraged to think individually and to go out and explore and find our own solutions to our problems are long gone, we have technology to thank for that. As young children they should be encouraged to look for their own answers and solve their own problems because soon enough they will find out that at one point or another life will hit you and you are on your own.

UCF On-Campus Restaurants Fail Health Inspections

Knightly News released documents provided by the Florida Department of Health show that UCF’s Marketplace has failed two routine health inspections in the past 10 months–including one in August, with 10 total violations.
Violations include dead bugs and roaches found in overhead lighting, food stored at more than 10 degrees the temperature it should be stored at, employees seen handling trash without washing their hands afterward and spoiled oranges found at the self-serve salad bar. KnightNews.com requested the documents after receiving multiple complaints by students regarding the quality of food at the meal-plan destination. Prior to the first failed health inspection of this year in February, there were no failed health inspections dating back as far as Fall 2010. The inspection in February resulted in half as many violations compared to the inspection in August.
Qdoba
Williams inspected the Student Union’s Qdoba Mexican Grill three times last year and once this year. The failed report from August shows soiled food storage containers, dirty boxes stored with food containers, toxins stored near food and electrical box leaks inside the walk-in cooler. The restaurant passed its most recent inspection in January.

Salsa 2 Go
Salsa 2 Go near the reflecting pond was inspected three times last year. The failed report from October shows improper food storage temperature and expired food manager certification. The manager of Salsa 2 Go has not commented on this issue, and the restaurant passed its most recent inspection in November.

Jimmy John’s
The sandwich vendor Jimmy John’s at Knights Plaza failed a health inspection in April. The report shows violations regarding food containers, food storage temperature and an issue with manager certification. The restaurant manager did not respond to attempts to reach him.

Marketplace
As previously reported, Marketplace was inspected five times last year; the restaurant passed three of its inspections in February, September and November, but the dining hall failed inspections in February and August of 2013.

Super Bowl Winning QB, Russell Wilson, Due To Report To Texas Rangers Spring Training

News Photo: Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks celebrates with…

Yesterday evening Russell Wilson catapulted himself into the ranks of NFL royalty, in just his 2nd year becoming one of the youngest quarterbacks ever to win a Super Bowl. In order to do so he had to overcome one of the men on the proverbial quarterback Mt. Rushmore. Super Bowl XLVIII was a total rout, Seattle beat Denver down from the first snap to the last one and it was actually a little tough to watch. As much as I felt bad for Peyton, there was a part of me that couldn’t be more proud of Wilson. Aside from winning the Super Bowl against him, there’s another thing Russell has over Peyton Manning. Russell Wilson, former second basemen, has been drafted 3 different times by the MLB. Wilson got drafted out of high school to Baltimore Orioles in 2007, by the Colorado Rockies in 2010 while he was still in college, & last year by the Texas Rangers via the Rule Five draft. Although he is fresh off a championship victory and it would seem he is going to stick with his football career, he is still going to attend the Rangers Spring Training. He’s not likely to go any further than that but he will be paid about $12,000 for his time there. The Rangers want him to bring sort of a winning attitude and create a more productive environment with his presence. That sure is a heck of a way to boost morale and it comes with a lot of pluses for Wilson who gets to train & partake in baseball activities with some other professional athletes.

Tampa Bay Rays: 2014 Season Preview

Year in and year out, the Tampa Bay Rays seem to always be in the thick of a playoff chase despite having one of the lowest payrolls in the MLB.  The reason for this may be the combination of a great front office, manager, and a nucleus of outstanding young talent.

The Rays play in the American League East division, which many may say is the toughest division in all of baseball.  With the likes of the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and even the up and coming Baltimore Orioles, the Rays will have their share of challenges.  Last year, the Rays fell short of their ultimate goal, losing to the eventual World Champion Red Sox in the postseason.

The Rays hope to content once more in 2014 with players like Evan Longoria and David Price returning.  Despite the trade rumors regarding their ace David Price, they still have one of the top pitching rotations in the league.  Matt Moore, Alex Cobb, and Chris Archer would all be in position to step up if Price does in fact get traded.

Evan Longoria, Wil Myers, and Ben Zobrist all seem like players who will be sticking around for awhile.  When he is healthy, Longoria can carry a team for stretches which is very important.  Wil Myers took the league by storm by winning the Rookie of the Year and playing like a veteran.  As for Ben Zobrist, he can play virtually any position which comes in handy.  He’s a true professional which every team needs.

With these players, the additions of Ryan Hanigan and Grant Balfour, and a manager like Joe Maddon, the Rays will be a legit threat.  Their time is now and their chances are good.

New England Patriots: 2014 Free Agency Preview

So the 2013-2014 NFL season has come and gone and the New England Patriots have once again failed to capture a Super bowl title and didn’t accomplish its Super bowl or bust mantra. So now they head into the offseason with many questions to answer and needs to address in order to make the big game. First they need to decide on what to do with some of their own players that are no longer under contract and those from other teams that are free agents.

For the players that the Patriots have to decide on whether to try and retain for next year there are really 2 players that are most important, wide receiver Julian Edelman and cornerback Aqib Talib. For Julian Edelman, coming off a season where he recorded over 100 catches and over 1000 receiving yards, it’s imperative for the Patriots to bring some continuity back to the offense where it seemed as though he was the only receiver that has real chemistry with quarterback Tom Brady. For Aqib Talib, he is the best player the Patriots have in the defensive backfield, and that has shown in the past 2 AFC Championship games where once he was injured and out the defense couldn’t stop their opponent. So it is important that the organization can get these players back.

As for trying to get free agents from other teams, the Patriots should really focus on 3 positions for next year, wide receiver, tight end, and defensive tackle. The wide receiver and tight end positions need to improve and provide Tom Brady with players to throw to and improve the offense. As for defensive tackle, it is needed for depth behind Vince Wilfork.

Keeping the Old with the New, Livers? New Liver Transplant Procedure for Children

Today standard liver transplants are at a very high success rate, so why should we try a new technique? Dr. Tomoaki Kato a surgeon at the New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, has started conducting a new liver surgery called an auxiliary partial orthotropic liver transplantation. Out of the 13 times Dr. Kato has done this procedure only one did not work the way they had hoped.

This procedure as he has found seems to work in young patients who need liver transplants. The procedure works like this: when a patient needs a liver transplant Dr. Kato surgically puts in the new liver just like a normal liver transplant. However, what makes this procedure different is that the original liver may still be able to recover on its own. After the person’s original liver is strong enough the transplant is then removed. Preforming this surgery can change the life of the transplant receiver. When a standard liver transplant is achieved the patient must take anti-rejection pills for the rest of their life. With this new surgery it eliminates having to take these pills because it is their own liver instead of a transplant. Anti-rejection pills have been found linked to suppress the immune system which can lead to infections and even cancer.

For Johnathan Nuñez’s family this surgery has been a blessing. When Johnathan was eight months old his only chance of survival was a liver transplant. Dr. Kato explained the procedure that he believed would be best for Johnathan and the parents decided it was the best option. Johnathan is now a very competitive and healthy eight-year old that trains five days a week in gymnastics. Ms. Nuñez considered her family very blessed and that “We were in the right place at the right time.”

FCAT: Why it Does Not Work

Let me be clear. I am not against standardized testing. In fact, I think it is a necessity in order to keep students motivated as well as to keep track of the health of the educational system and the rate at which the young generation is learning. However, I believe that the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is a highly flawed system that is hurting the learning experience of children across the Sunshine State.

The problem mainly emerges from the nature of the test and the way students are prepared. This is most clearly seen in the reading test. It is a multiple choice platform in which students read a passage and then proceed to answer questions about it, ranging from vocabulary to reading comprehension. That is good considering students must learn how to comprehend what they read. However, the way students prepare for this is what really hurts them. Looking back at my FCAT years, I notice that we would spend all year preparing for that one test. Doing practice after practice after passage after passage, but never really learned anything other than the skills needed to pass that particular test. We never learned to think for ourselves, to create our own opinion about a passage and be able to express that, much like we do in college. We were taught to follow a system of black and white with no grey area.

When I went to high school, I was fortunate enough to be part of the AICE program from the University of Cambridge. Much like IB and AP, we also had to take a test at the end of the year. But in contrast to the FCAT, we actually learned during that process of preparation. We read famous texts and plays, and took mock exams modeled after the questions that appeared on past AICE exams. There was no multiple choice, only essays, and the questions gave us a chance to explore the text freely, and be able to answer the question to our own interpretation, as long as we backed it up. Not only did this make me a better reader, but also a much better writer, which prepared me extensively for college.

That is why I believe FCAT should undergo a major reboot and look to the European educational system as a model. They should, like Cambridge,  come up with a list of subjects that will be tested at the end of the term, such as a list of texts, and have students prepare using that material. Unlike FCAT, which requires students to read endless amounts of passages, this will allow students to focus on just three or four texts, but really be able to explore them and truly learn what it is to read and comprehend the message an author is trying to send.

Dullest superbowl I have ever seen

Last night, the Superbowl offered many exciting things. It was the Denver Broncos high power offense against the The Seattle Sea hawks and their impenetrable defense. I believed it was going to be a very exciting game despite who would emerge the victor. I also thought there would be several funny or good commercials because usually the best commercials are during the Superbowl.  But it was a disappointing and overall boring night to watch the biggest night in football. The only saving grace was the half time show which was pretty good although I wanted to see more of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

The game was an absolute mess. the bronco’s high functioning offense was playing like a high school football team and a bad one at that. They kept making mistakes and the play selection was terrible. The only person that was doing anything was Payton Manning and he threw 2 interceptions, but that is only half of the problem. The Denver Broncos defense was below average not even being able to stop Seattle’s offense even once. Don’t get me wrong the Seattle offense is pretty good but it looked like they were scoring with relative ease. Just a terrible game to watch.

Then comes the commercials for the Superbowl. Usually when watching the Superbowl, there are a lot of commercials that are very good, and just a a small amount that were okay. This Superbowl there was a handful of commercials that were pretty good and the rest were terrible. I could possibly name three that were good commercials which were the the Budweiser puppy commercial, the bud light commercial with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the jaguar commercial with Ben Kingsly. There might be a few more that i forgot to mention but everything else was mediocre at best.
