Bangladeshi secular publisher murdered, al-Qaeda takes credit

Faisal Arefin Dipon, 43, was found hacked to death in his third-floor office at Jagriti Publishing House in Dhaka, Bangladesh this past Saturday, according to officials. He was lying in a pool of his own blood, with a slashed neck and severed body parts. Such is the life secular media in the country.

This type of attack is not unprecedented. Mere hours earlier, armed men burst into the Shudhdhoswar publishing house, shot and stabbed one publisher and two writers, locked them away, and fled the scene of the crime. In February, a secular Bangladeshi-American blogger named Avajit Roy was also hacked to death in a similar manner to that of Dipon. Coincidentally, both publishing houses that were under attack on Saturday disseminated the work of Roy. Three separate bloggers have also been targeted in the months since the incident.

After the murder of Dipon, the local al-Qaeda affiliate Ansar al-Islam took credit for the murder via online messages. He claimed that the publishers had promoted the works of blasphemous individuals and threatened to continue murdering such people until they cease their heretical efforts.

The fight for humans rights of expression is ongoing in Bangladesh. While some openly speak out against the government and extremist Islamic tenets that attempt to keep them quiet, those same extremists have proven to be more than willing to make examples of them with acts of violence. The Ansarullah Bangla Team and Islamic State have also claimed to take part in various other crimes, and several have gone unclaimed. Not all the victims are Bangladeshi, either – and Italian aid worker and a Japanese agricultural worker have been accounted, as well.

While the government recognizes the groups that commit the crimes and denounces their actions, little has been done to bring them to justice. Whether it is out of fear that one of their own members would become the next target, or whether it is because of another reason entirely, the fight for expression continues and the complicit groups remain at large.

GoPro Looking At Getting Into The Quadcopter Market

It should come to no surprise that the massive action camera company GoPro is looking into getting a piece of the quadcopter market share. They just recently released a teaser video showing what they claim to be raw footage straight from the camera and not stabilized in post.

If it is indeed unaltered footage, then it looks like GoPro has done their homework on their new quadcopter. The footage looks very smooth and doesn’t have the micro vibrations that you traditionally see in quadcopter footage. It makes a lot of sense for GoPro to go this route. Most of the quadcopters out right now use GoPros as the camera. It was just a matter of time before they decided to build a quad of their own.

Currently there are no photos or renderings of what this new quadcopter will look like but with results like what we are seeing so far, I’m not sure people will really care what it looks like. DJI, who makes arguably the most popular GoPro ready quadcopter on the market in the Phantom, won’t win any awards for looks, although their new Inspire certainly could.

GoPro is kind of taking a page out of DJI’s play book. DJI’s quadcopters traditionally used GoPro’s cameras. But recently DJI decided to build a camera of their own with pretty impressive results. GoPro is doing the opposite, they have the camera, they just need a vehicle to mount it to, so they have decided to build their own. It’ll be interesting to see what features GoPro includes in their copter and what their price point will be and if they can dethrone DJI as the goto quadcopter.

Daily Fantasy Sports…Legal or Illegal?

Recently Nevada became the first state to strike down and regulate daily fantasy sports tournaments, putting the future of websites such as DraftKings and FanDuel at risk. DraftKings and FanDuel allow users to bet money on who can create a better sports roster. Users select players and add them to their roster and once they are satisfied with their selections, they can submit these rosters to various tournament formats at various entry “fees”. These fees act as the potential payout one might receive if they win a tournament. DraftKings and Fanduel have millions of players and generate millions of dollars in business, but now lawmakers are stepping in to regulate.

Lawmakers in Nevada were the first to deem daily fantasy sports as a form of gambling and thus requiring regulation. DraftKings and FanDuel argue daily fantasy is far from gambling. The fantasy giants say tournaments can only be won with extensive studying and knowledge of sports and are not a matter of luck. Obviously Nevada disagrees. Lawmakers have stated its far too easy for anyone to select players at random and win these tournaments, even beating those who spend hours studying players and teams. FanDuel and DraftKings say this can happen, but is rare. This according to lawmakers is enough evidence to deem daily fantasy tournaments gambling.

The future of daily fantasy tournaments along with DraftKings and Fanduel is certainly up in the air. Nevada has made the first strike and fans of DraftKings and FanDuel wait to see if their state will move next. As of now many states have quickly stated daily fantasy is a non-issue in their agenda, but Nevada’s decision may set precedent in the future.

The Hit TV Show “Friends” Hits its 21st Year Aniversity. To Celebrate We Bring You Our Favorites Memories From the Show!

Wow, has it been that long since the mega-hit TV show aired? 21 years! That’s one person being legal to drink by now -As Chandler (Matthew Perry) would say.

This show brought laughs to everyone’s home back in the day and I, myself, am one who still watches the show thanks to Netflix streaming all the season, which are 10- that’s a 10 year run for a show, very well-deserved. Every season came with new characters, new storylines, and new looks for the characters, all new styles to keep the series interesting.

“Friends” was famous for being a hilarious show about 6 friends living in New York, going through life’s ups and downs, dating issues, everyday troubles but looking at it all from a funny perspective.

To understand the show, here we give you a brief summary of what each main character in the show brings in:

Rachel- the typical American girl next door, she’s blonde with light eyes, amazing body, gorgeous face, she’s literally perfect. She takes advantage of that, because she usually gets what she wants just for smiling.

Ross- oh Ross, poor guy. He got divorced because his wife cheated on him with another woman. But he’s fine but he secretly loves Rachel but doesn’t know how to admit it.

Phoebe- she’s definitely the funniest one out of all them. She has such an easy-going personality, but sometimes she could go off the rails because she’s all peace and love.

Chandler- the most sarcastic person on this planet probably. He has bad luck with the ladies, he usually try to figure out how to approach without being awkward.

Monica- the OCD of the group. She wants thing to be a certain way all the time, but she does it with love. She is also the chef of the group so they all love to go to her apartment for food.

Joey- hands down the most gullible guy ever. He always thinking of the dumbest things but it is so funny because the rest of the group gets frustrated with all his sayings.

Sixty Years Since the Civil Rights Movement Began, Yet Blacks Still Seek Justice

A jury acquitted two more deputies for the murder of a nigerian college student. This ruling came despite the overwhelming evidence of abuse the student suffered. The judicial system tried to appease the public outcry by convicting the officers on lesser charges.

The corrupted deputies, serving a corrupt system, were found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter, apparently the jurors must have been blind. However, this is nothing new for blacks, because true justice has yet to be given.

St. Augustine said that, “an unjust law is no law at all”, and this definitely qualifies. Something has to be done about this brutality to human beings. That is what these people are; human beings. It is open season on black men, more has to be done than organizing rallies to end this, we can no longer sit by idly while our oppressor’s take the lives of black men and women.

The lives of blacks matter just as much as the lives of whites or any other race. We have to ignore the palliatives offered by society in an attempt to deny the justice we deserve and demand. We as black people have to look within for solutions. we cannot expect those who do not understand our plights to help us find solutions. In short, we cannot expect those that oppress to help our people end their oppression.

Finally, we must have the audacity to believe we are more than what society has told us we are. We are a race of men and women that has been denied respect. That lack of respect must come to an end, by any means necessary.

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino Joins Protest of Police Brutality

Oscar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino joined the peaceful protest against police brutality in New York City this weekend. Tarantino flew into the city from California to march the seven and a half miles on Greenwich Village’s Sixth Avenue as a part of a series of demonstrations organized by the New York group “RiseUpOctober. ”

“I’m a human being with a conscience,” said Tarantino to the crowd of protesters in Washington Square Park. “And if you believe there’s murder going on then you need to rise up and stand up against it. I’m here to say I’m on the side of the murdered.” He explained to the demonstrators that he thinks, too often, that policemen are “murderers.”

There were no arrests at the demonstration, but Patrick Lynch, the head of the cop union, thought Tarantino’s appearance was disgraceful considering his glorification of fictional violence. It was also shortly after the murder of a police officer on the job (Tarantino acknowledged the bad timing) but had been organized months beforehand.

Tarantino, on the other hand, stood his ground and responded: “When I see murders, I do not stand by… I have to call a murder a murder and I have to call the murderers the murderers.”

“The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls ‘murderers’ aren’t living in one of his depraved big-screen fantasies — they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem,” said Lynch in a response.

The protestors seemed to be moved by the appearance of a figure of influence at their demonstration.

UCF Homecoming Comes to an End

Classes began at UCF in 1968 and in 1971 UCF held its first Homecoming to coincide with the basketball season which was, at the time, the university’s first varsity sport. In 1980, there were two Homecomings held: one in the spring to coincide with the basketball season and one in the fall to coincide with the football season. In 1971 the first “skit knight” was held, then referred to as “Nite of Knights”.

1975 saw the first homecoming parade. In 1992, the parade was moved downtown, where it remained until 2007 when it moved back to campus with the opening of UCF’s first on campus football stadium.

Homecoming has been a tradition at UCF since its earliest years. It has become a staple of fall programming at the University.

Many students, student organizations, university departments, even off campus businesses plan their fall calendars around this week of events. Traditionally, Homecoming is an opportunity for Alumni to revisit and reconnect with their Alma Mater.

However, at UCF it is equally important to current students. It is a time for students to exhibit their pride in their school, putting aside other affiliations and raising morale and spirit. Go Knights!

This past homecoming week UCF was home to Damon Wayans Jr. from New Girl and other various comedies and Jimmy Tatro, a YouTube sensation. UCF also had one of its biggest ‘Concert Knights’ with Big Sean performing for over 4,000 students.

Not only did UCF have great concert and comedy nights, they also have an array of events that any student can get involved in such as, coin wars, fireworks, and movie night.

Last but not least, to really end the week on a great note- UCF Homecoming puts on Spirit Splash.

Spirit Splash was awarded Best Campus Tradition 2011 by the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA), Spirit Splash is the Nation’s greatest pep rally. Students came in their swim suits and run into the UCF Reflection pond to get ready for the big homecoming game Saturday.

Overall, UCF put on a great Homecoming week and I hope next year more people come out!

Patch On The Atlantic Concerns Scientists.

At first sight, it stands out as a swollen thumb, this purplish stain on the map. It’s one of the few locations on earth that is unusually cold during the year, and will most probably be the coldest on a global scale.

The so-called ‘Patch of the Atlantic’ is a big area in the North Atlantic Sea and it’s experiencing a steep cooling trend. The ocean surface is colder than usual, at some points colder than ever before. Scientists started to realize of its development through the course of two years. This cooling in the Atlantic is completely opposite to the warming of the Pacific. Most of the increase in temperature is attributed to ‘El Niño’, a natural process in which warm water circulates above the Central Pacific Sea and goes all the way to South America. Although, Scientists can’t fully explain what we now call the Patch of the Pacific.

This intense warming process over enormous areas through the Pacific has fed a season of way-above-the-average number of hurricanes through the Pacific. It could have also added to the California draught, the impacts of the Salmon industry, and would even explain the tropical sharks that have been found in northern waters.

The cold patch of the Atlantic is close to Greenland, which means that such cold temperatures so far north are not common. These reports, even though are not scandalous enough to make it in a movie plot, are still pretty bad. The loss of even circulation in the ocean could lead to drastic changes. Consequently, the increase of sea levels could threaten coastal cities around the world.

Communist China Bans Golf Club Membership

It seems that freedom is far-fetched idea for the members of China’s Communist Party, and added recently to their limitations was golf club membership. Communist China made a big decision, and intensified their war on golf by making golf club memberships illegal for party members. Prior to this law’s creation, the Communist Party ruled that golf clubs could no longer be constructed back in 2004. Environmentalists believe that golf courses are a waste of resources and harm the ecosystem.

The dislike for the sport goes back to the days when communist leader Mao Zedong was in power in 1949. He believed golf was “a sport for billionaires”, and goes against the values of the communist party. Golf came back to the scene in China in the 80s, creating an image communist China did not want. For years, golf regulations were highly ignored. To attract tourism, local officials encouraged the construction of more golf clubs even after the 2004 ruling. The government decided to close 66 golf clubs this past March, which made up about 10% of golf clubs in China.

Communist regulations not only hurt golfers, they also hurt any owner or a business that offers luxury services. Other formal Communist bans include extravagant eating and drinking, and abuse of power. Now, more jobs will be lost due to this latest regulation. The regulation does not explain why there is a ban against golf memberships, but it made very clear that those caught in violation would be punished and possibly removed from the Communist Party.

Oklahoma State University Parade Crash

On October 24th, a parade was being held for homecoming week at Oklahoma State University. Marvin Stone, a retired professor, and Bonnie, his wife and OSU employee for 30 years,  were looking to celebrate OSU, but instead tragically both were murdered by Adacia Chambers and her Hyundai Elantra.

Chambers was arrested and charged with DUI and four counts of second degree murder. After also killing a University of Central Oklahoma student,  Nakita Prabhakar. Another employee at the school, Nicollete Strauch, survived the crash, but her 2-year-old son Nash was killed, according to the university.

This wasn’t the only damage that occurred. Ms. Chambers also managed to injure dozens of people, with 11 victims younger than 13. Student Kailey Carter told KJRH she saw something black coming towards, and “I didn’t know what it was at first, so I just got up and ran,” Carter said. “The car hit me as it was stopping, and then I flew over some strollers.”

That gives you an idea of the type of crowd that was at this parade. Children, long-time employees, and students coming together to appreciate their program and express school pride and cheer on their nationally ranked unbeaten football team. That shocking thing was this crash happened before noon.

It’s unclear what was in Adacia Chambers’ system, but whatever it was, it just ruined her and many other peoples lives.
