Why is Digital Revolutionizing The Film Industry?

It’s beginning to feel strange calling the Film Industry, the Film industry when we are shooting less and less on film. Digital has become the new standard. And why is that? How is that? How has the “Gold Standard” of film been dethroned? It is actually very complicated if you think about it.
Your knee jerk reaction might be to blame it on money. Digital is cheaper, that is true. But in an age where your big block buster movies, have an almost limitless budget, and yet they are also shooting on digital, then it can’t just be about money. There has to be something more to it.

Film has limits. Film can only be so sensitive. It can only realistically be so big, so it can only be so good in low light. And that’s where digital has it beat. Where film has stopped evolving, digital can always be improved. Sensors can be made more sensitive, photosites can be redesigned to capture light better. They can be made smaller to pack more onto a sensor and thus making them higher resolution. The dynamic range can be improved upon, which has already surpassed film. In fact we have surpassed film in a few areas. If you could measure super35mm film in video resolution, it would be around 3.2k. Clearly we have passed that limit.

Where digital has yet to best film is in color and fine detail and highlight and shadow roll-off. And those things are what separates film from digital. That’s what gives film it’s “filmic look and digital it’s “digital” look.

That is why some directors still cling on and shoot on film. But it’s only a matter of time before digital is able to replicate the those aspects as well. And that’s why digital is revolutionizing the film industry, because it can still be improved upon, it has yet to reach its limit.

Bar in Orlando Offering Free Beer Until UCF wins a Football Game

The Knights’ performance this season has left little to celebrate but that isn’t stopping this bar in Orlando from keeping the party alive.

The Basement, a bar 15 miles away from campus, is giving away free beer during UCF football games until the team can get a win. The Reason, as it says on The Basement’s advertising promotion, “Because we need something to celebrate.”  After a loss to Tulane this week putting the Knights at 0-5,  there very well could be free drinks all season. The Basement is located in Downtown Orlando and says it will switch to giving free wine if the beer runs out.

The bar may be 15 miles away from campus but the school spirit hits home. Along with advertising the bar has weekly tweets that show the school pride.

“Name another school with this much enthusiasm for an 0-4 team. UCF fans always ‪#‎ChargeOn‬, even if they need a little push from the local watering hole. Go Knights!”

That enthusiasm might not be present now that the Knights are 0-5. A usual customer and fan of the nights responded to the tweet saying:

“We are going to need to start a GoFundMe to keep @basmentorlando in business all football season. UCF football may bankrupt them.”

Whether or not this advertising method will work in favor of the business is yet to be seen but at the very least it gives a depressed Knights fan base a reason to kick back and celebrate something. You can bet this upcoming week will be more than just another game for The Basement, its a matter of life and death for the bar’s future.

East Coast is getting ready for hurricane Joaquin and floods that can occur throughout the states

Being prepared for hurricanes are one of the most responsible things a family can do. For the past 10 years, hurricanes has been avoided in Florida and the east coast since 2005. Hurricane Katrina was the major hurricane that truly impacted our nation. Hurricane Katrina devastated millions of people livelihood and Billions in property damage; after the afterwards of it the nation has created organizations of responses teams to assist affected families.

Once again, a hurricane is headed toward the east coast-Hurrican Joaquin. Although this hurricane isn’t as powerful as previous hurricanes, the devastation of impacted families and states can be high. And South Carolina and east coast states is no stranger to hurricanes. Most hurricanes that past through this wonderful states, one of the main concerns is floods.

Floods are high amount of water beyond its normal confines. This results in businesses, families, water, electricity being turned off and possibly individuals dying. If floods reach a certain area with dams or lakes the damage can be throughout counties or even cities,

Certain areas such as Washington D.C. South Carolina, New Jersey have activated an evacuation protocol so people are able to  leave their homes and hurricane path to stay safe.

Meteorologist state hurricane Joaquin won’t hit landfall but will bring strong force winds to all areas that is destined for its path, according to times.com/weather channel. Personally, I have family member that already left certain ares of east coast to stay with my family/ my house. The important part is safety.

Upcoming video game gives “dying” a whole new meaning

Typically, dying in a video game isn’t a big deal. It might come with a consequence, like losing your items, or having to start at your last checkpoint, but a new video game is taking dying to a whole new level. If you get killed while playing Upsilon Circuit, you’re dead … for good! Death in this game means that you can never play again. The creators of this game are calling this characteristic “perma-permadeath”, which will give gamers a new outlook on their life in the game.

The game allows eight players to battle at a time. The eight players are split off into two teams of four, where they face obstacles and combat enemies. If a player dies, a spectator is randomly selected to replace them. Spectators can also pay to send aid to the players they are rooting for, very reminiscent of how The Hunger Games are played. “We’re monetizing trolling” says co-creator Calvin Goble of the Robot Loves Kitty studio. “What I’m hoping happens is that the experience evolves and that the people who live longest will respect their one life, be more cautious and careful,” he says.

Because only eight players can play at a time, being chosen as a contestant in the game makes it a hot commodity. On top of the limited selection of players, the fact that life can come to an end permanently will make the players value their mortality a little more. Not only are players facing a limited lifetime, but so is the game itself. Creators are planning on only releasing the game for a year. A release date has not yet been released.

Courts Uphold N.C.A.A. Rule to Not Pay Student Athletes

Earlier this week, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in a 2-1 decision upheld a lower courts ruling to restrict payments to student athletes just for catching touchdown passes. There has been a long debate over the years about whether or not student athletes should be paid for playing. The Ninth Circuit Court made it very clear that they are still students, and universities should not pay for all of their school expenses either. Student athletes have brought to light that their playing abilities bring in millions to their respected schools every year. In their eyes they find it is only fair that they bank in on some of the school’s earnings.

The N.C.A.A. has also been excused of exploited their athletes, especially men basketball and football players. O’Bannon v. N.C.A.A. made some clear lines for what is and what is not ethical when it come to providing funds for student athletes. This case was sort of a win for the N.C.A.A.; however, the decision to disallow a security payment up to $5,000 may lead to the N.C.A.A. taking this case to the Supreme Court. The courts have reiterated that scholarships may not cover the full cost of attendance, due to some schools coming extremely close to doing so. In the eyes of Judge Jay Bybee, who wrote the majority opinion, it is contradictory to call the athletes amateurs and later state nil-payments up to $5,000 are justifiable. Through the eyes of the courts, the only athletes that should be paid are the professionals.

College Students Killed at School in Oregon

At least 10 people were killed earlier this week when gunman, Chris Harper Mercer, opened fire at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College. Mercer, 26, was also a student enrolled in the class were he shot his victims. Witnesses say, Mercer targeted victims due to their religious beliefs.  Stacy Boylen, mother of a daughter  who was wounded,  told CNN “[He started] asking people one by one what their religion was. ‘Are you a Christian?’ he would ask them, and if you’re a Christian, stand up. And they would stand up and he said, ‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you are going to see God in just about one second.’ And then he shot and killed them.” The city’s News-Review newspaper reported, one student who was in the class where the shooting occurred said she saw the teacher of her Writing 115 class get shot in the head  before the Mercer started asking people to state their religion.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, reported, Mercer was eventually killed in a shootout with police outside one of the classes.

Upon further development, a source reported to CNN that the killer was carrying four guns — three pistols and a rifle.

President Obama, spoke to the nation, regarding his dismay concerning the shootings,  which concluded in him expressing a need for  greater gun control.

Opinion: Personally, I don’t think having tighter drug laws will cure the problem of mass killings, just like making drugs illegal prevents many kids from overdosing on drugs. I think it will take more than just another law. More security officers should be available on all college campuses at all times. Also, at this point it just seems right to have a metal detectors at every entrance.

200 Ways to Smile Everyday

This was an idea I had to give my mom for her birthday and I called it Jar of Sunshine!

It’s pretty much a big glass jar filled with yellow notes and in each note is a positive or motivational quote. It also contains funny memories with our family and notes of gratitude. I hand wrote 200 notes. All the notes were in yellow designed paper I bought at Michael’s! I chose for all of them to be in yellow because I thought yellow represented sunshine, which was my goal to create a Jar of Sunshine filled with positivity.

I also filled the bottom with glass yellow pebbles to make the bottom nice and pretty. It was also filled with yellow wrapped candies and chocolates. Anything that was yellow was in there that’d she like. On the outside of the jar, I hot glue gunned a yellow decorated construction paper with “Jar of Sunshine” written in yellow cursive.

The best part was that everyday or whenever you want, you grab a note and read it. You’re guaranteed to start your day off great and instantly put a smile on your face.

To top off the jar, I put gold and white ribbon and a glass top. My mom keeps it in the kitchen and every morning when she makes her coffee, she gets her daily “treat”. Whenever you’re having a bad day or need some positive energy, you’ll always have your Jar of Sunshine!

You can create your own jar and be creative as you like. I was able to purchase all my supplies at Michael’s, even the jar. The only part that took long was thinking of the 200 notes but in the end it’s all worth it!

Sometimes my mom calls me in the morning to let me know which one she picked out and how much it helped her in the day. This gift was inexpensive with a great reward!

Spread Good Positive Energy & Have A Great Day Everyday! (:

Til next time.

Crime Drama ‘The Blacklist’ Returns for its Third Season on NBC

The Blacklist returned to NBC for its third season Thursday October 1st. Last season left off on a bombshell event that put profiler Agent Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) on the top of the F.B.I.s most wanted list. Along with her on that list is the Concierge of Crime Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader), who has an unknown connection to Liz from her past.

Latest episode “The Troll Farmer” picks up shortly thereafter with Red and Liz on the run together from the U.S. government. Former allies like Liz’s old partner Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) and agency tech guy Aram Mojtabai (Amir Arison) are now pitted against her, albeit with some reluctance. A new villain steps into the light, the mysterious Mr. Solomon (Edi Gathegi). Solomon kidnaps the grandchild of Red’s associate Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) in order to presumably get information from him on his longtime employer. Red and Liz attempt to escape the city, but run into some roadblocks that separate them, leaving one behind. In typical Blacklist fashion, we’re left on a bit off a cliffhanger.

Without a doubt the true draw to this show is James Spader and his completely delightful portrayal of Raymond Reddington. Snarky and smart, dark and threatening, warm and inviting- he’s a multifaceted character being played by an actor with a firm grasp on the most minute of details. The mystery of his relationship with Liz is another reason to keep returning, as we are given crumbs of information here and there as seasons progress.

With the premiere ratings up around 13% higher than last seasons finale, this season of The Blacklist is off to promising start.
