The Search For Flight MH370 Continues

It is still horrifying and depressing to hear the news, or lack thereof, about Flight MH370 having completely disappeared. There are still very few clues as to what could have happened to the plane and its 239 passengers. It’s very frightening to believe that they are currently untraceable in such a wired world. With the kinds of technology that are available to us, it is very hard to imagine that even one person could practically fall off the face of the earth without a trace.

Investigators are looking into numerous options of how to track the plane and its passengers. Because in this day and age, most people carry cellphones and other smart devices, it can be assumed that at least one of these was left on and there is a chance that it was able to connect with a cell tower somewhere, giving some clue as to where they might be. Usually, planes fly well out of the range of cell towers, but since it has been suggested that the plane was flying low in order to remain undetected, there is the chance that cellular transmission was possible.

Now, with 10 days past and 26 nations desperately searching for answers, investigators are looking for other alternative methods of tracking down the plane. With so many unknown variables, there is the very real possibility of a terrorist attack. Many people are questioning the possibilities, there is much speculation. One main question is that if the plane had internet access, in which passengers could use to send and receive emails mid-flight, why haven’t any been retrieved?

Feminists Taking A Stand With Today’s Music

Feminism is not a new concept by any means , the movement has been stirring for decades, going back to before women even had the right to vote or own land. In today’s generation feminism is using a new platform to spread the cause around. With every moment, there are always extremists, that can give it a bad name, but to me feminism is the belief in equal rights and treatment of both sexes.

A trend I began noticing recently, is the feminist move in music. There are several mainstream female artists who are flipping the script, and creating a stir. Artists like Christina Aguilera and Beyonce have been voicing their opinions for a while.

San Antonio Spurs first team to 50 wins in a season…again

It seems that every year there are only three things in the world that are completely inevitable. Death, taxes, and the San Antonio Spurs winning 50 games in a season. Although I spent most of my life growing up in South Florida being a Miami Heat fan, I can’t help but have the utmost respect over our last year playoff rivals. Miami took the gold home last year, however the thirst for revenge is extremely apparent in the Spurs playing style this season.

Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan, and the Spurs have extended their streak of winning at least 50 games in a season for the 13th consecutive season, surpassing the LA Lakers for the longest streak in NBA history. In addition to this success, Coach Pop and the Spurs have the best winning percentage over any 15-year span in NBA history since the 1997-98 season. They also have the best record in the four major professional sports (NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL) during this time period.

I almost feel like the Spurs, the most fundamentally correct team in the league, seem to be completely overlooked compared to other big-shot teams due to the lack of flashiness. Because they would rather rely on pure strategy and fundamentals over having one or two over the top, extremely talented players such as Kevin Durant or Kobe Bryant, they never achieve the level of recognition they really need. So this one goes out to Greg Popovich and his extremely talented set of athletic masterminds. Playoff season can’t get any more exciting.

Hydrogen Technology and its Place in the Motor Industry

With emissions regulations taking over the entirety of the motor industry, and the planet running out of oil for fuel, much time is being invested by auto makers to improve the technology of hybrid and electric cars. Tesla did this with the astonishing 100% electric Model S, and are constantly exploring ways to maximize the efficiency of electrical energy running cars. Hybrid technology is also constantly being revised, with Porsche, McLaren, and Ferrari releasing a new breed of hypercars that run on hybrid platforms. This is extremely important because it shows how cars can still be massively fast and also eco-friendly. Porsche’s 918 Spyder, for example make generates nearly 900 horsepower, yet can do 47 miles to the gallon. That is an incredible engineering accomplishment.

However, while it is all fine and dandy that electricity is being incorporated so successfully into the motor industry, there is still a technology that has been ignored, and technically is a far better solution to the emissions problem. That technology is Hydrogen power.

Hydrogen has been regarded as a viable fuel for many years, and has also found its fair bit of development in the motor industry. The use of hydrogen power has mainly been found in cars powered by hydrogen fuel-cells, which essentially is a system that uses the hydrogen fuel to generate electricity to power an electric motor that drives the wheels. This has already been used in production cars. A few years ago, Honda released a car named the FCX Clarity, which was only sold in California and ran on a hydrogen fuel-cell system. The only gas to escape the exhaust: H2O.

Other brands have been exploring the hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine. BMW has been developing this technology since the late 80s, and in 2006 release a limited production model dubbed the Hydrogen7, which was effectively a BMW 760 with the same V12 engine, but could run on either hydrogen or gasoline at the flick of a switch. When running on hydrogen power, all that came out of the exhaust was water vapor.

Hence, that technology exists, and has existed for many years, and I think car manufacturers should work to keep developing that technology and expand its infrastructure, finally solving the CO2 frenzy; to run electric and hybrid vehicles, fossil fuels are still needed and, though to a lesser extent, still will contribute to the release of CO2, with hydrogen technology, all we need is the most abundant element in the universe.

Pregnant Woman Drives Car Into The Ocean and While In Jail, Punches Her Stomach to Hurt Her Unborn Child

A pregnant 32 year old woman, Ebony Wilkerson from South Carolina that is a mother of 3 children ages 3, 9 and 10 drove her car into the ocean on March 6th 2014 in Daytona, Florida. The day that she drove her car into the ocean she was speaking about Jesus and that there was demons in the house. The children were inside the car saying that their mother was trying to kill them and when people rescued the two children, they were crying saying that there was a baby inside the car. They took the mother to the hospital for a mental evaluation and the children as well and now the children are with The Florida Department of Children and Families.

Now the pregnant mother was caught punching herself in the stomach while in jail and she is 28 weeks pregnant. She was then sent to a psychiatric hospital as a result of the Baker Act. An OB/GYN testified on Monday that Wilkerson needs to be seen more than usual during her pregnancy going to weekly appointments to make sure that everything is okay with the baby and her. The state said that Wilkerson has to be in the sight of corrections officers at all times to make sure that she doesn’t do anything to harm herself.

Ebony is being charged with first -degree murder and child abuse and is being held in jail on $1.2 million dollar bond.  They are going to be watching her closely to make sure that everything is okay with the unborn child.

How The Power Of Television And The Internet have Changed The World We Live In

The internet and Television are intertwined. Television sparks the idea and the internet is the tool used to elaborate on that idea. Television will continue to change the face of the planet for as long as there is someone one side of the the camera telling a story and someone on the opposite side willing to  watch. As humans we learn two ways from what we experience and what we observe. Television has given us the opportunity to capture the real and unreal, to let our minds explore the depths of our imaginations.

Television has taught us habits, told us stories, showed us what other peoples versions of reality are, and shared with us emotions. Television has given us the power and the free will to use what we see in a negative or positive way. Television is still in its infancy stage and we have not come close to witnessing its true potential. Most countries have not reached the era of the internet so it is still in its newborn stage. An idea is just an idea until it has been marinated and tossed around, this is what the internet has started doing. The internet has connected us and given us the benefit of a two way interaction.

Not only are we able to share knowledge, cultures, and stories,  with the internet we are able to explore and criticize the depths of what we learn. The single most important thing that the internet has taught us is research.  As a species we have been given the tool to question what we are told and create our own reality. The Internet and Television have given us the power to become independent thinkers, wiser individuals, and a more connected universe. This is just the beginning of a world wide revolution.

March Madness Bracket Craze

For sports fans, March Madness is one of the most exciting times of the year.  68 of college basketball’s best teams battle it out in a single elimination tournament to crown a national champion.  This bracket style tournament has given fans all around the world an opportunity to pick who they think will win each and every game.  Year by year, filling out a bracket has become more popular and it seems like everyone is doing it.

Selection Sunday is a big day for college basketball fans.  This is when they find out who and where their favorite team is playing.  After this information is revealed, people can go online and fill out their own bracket.  At this point, people become “analysts” and try to decipher who will win each game.  Unfortunately, this is nearly impossible to do.  No one has ever filled out a perfect bracket.  Upsets are inevitable in the NCAA tournament which will likely crush anyone’s dreams of a perfect bracket.

People have also filled out brackets for money in different groups.  They will throw in ten or twenty bucks (or sometimes more) with whoever having the highest win percentage taking all.  Warren Buffet has even stated he will give away one billion dollars to anyone who fills out a perfect bracket.  As mentioned earlier, this hasn’t been done and is nearly impossible to do.

Each year, more and more people fill out brackets and it’s easy to see why.  Anyone can participate and it’s fun to do.  There are many teams capable of going all the way this year which makes it even harder to predict.  Which Cinderella team will pull an upset and bust everyone’s bracket this year?

How I Met Your Mother’s Dead Mother Theory

On March 31, 2014 one of my favorite television shows comes to an end. The long-running series How I Met Your Mother’s final season comes to a close with a two-part finale and I’m certainly frightened to see how things will end. For quite some time the fans of the show have come up with a daunting theory in which “The Mother” is dead and the main character, Ted Mosby is simply telling his two children about how he met their mother, so that they can come to understand the couple’s story shortly after the mother’s demise.

The sad theory began after the end of the eighth season’s episode “The Time Travelers” after Ted gave a heart-warming speech to the mother forty-five days before meeting her after he proclaims that he wished he had forty-five extra days with her or even forty-five seconds. This episode sparked a few theories, but many just feel that people were looking into the speech too much. However, I was one of those fans who noticed this and was tinged with pain as the show rarely ever has moments, or speeches that are meaningless.

The theory was brought back to life in the episode “How Your Mother Met Me” when fans finally got to hear a condensed version of the mother’s back story. The evidence for this episode was a little shaky as the theory was resurfaced because the main character Ted is narrating the mother’s story. One would assume that the mother would tell her children her own story.

Finally, the theory was basically confirmed after the end of the ninth season episode “Vesuvius” where the mother and Ted are seen in the year 2024. Near the end of the episode Ted is sharing the story of how their friend whose wedding is taking place throughout the entire ninth season, Robin is surprised by her mother who shows up for her wedding. The mother then states “Well of course her mother showed up. What mother is going to miss her daughter’s wedding?” This leads to the mother tearing up and Ted starting to cry while she comforts him. This seems to prove the theory as the couple has a daughter and the mother will likely be unable to show up to the wedding due to her imminent death. At this time it seems that the mother is terminally ill. While I’m hoping that this theory is just a red herring, odds are that it’s not and my favorite sitcom is likely to end in a much darker way than many fans expected.

In Ireland, the Irish celebrate their patron saint on March 17, green food has bitter connotations that recall the nation’s darkest chapter

Green food may mean party time in America, where St. Patrick’s Day has long been an excuse to break out the food dye. But in Ireland, where the Irish celebrate their patron saint on March 17, green food has bitter connotations that recall the nation’s darkest chapter, says historian Christine Kinealy.

The reason, Kinealy explains, is the Irish potato famine of the 1840s, which forced so many Irish to flee mass starvation in their homeland in search of better times in America and elsewhere. Those who stayed behind turned to desperate measures.

“People were so deprived of food that they resorted to eating grass,” Kinealy tells The Salt. “In Irish folk memory, they talk about people’s mouths being green as they died.”

At least 1 million Irish died in the span of six years, says Kinealy, the founding director of Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Which is why, for an Irishwoman like Kinealy, who hails from Dublin and County Mayo, the sight of green-tinged edibles intended as a joyous nod to Irish history can be jolting, she says.

“Before I came to America, I’d never seen a green bagel,” she says. “For Irish-Americans, they think of dyeing food green, they think everything is happy. But really, in terms of the famine, this is very sad imagery.”

Of course, Americans have long embraced St. Patrick’s Day traditions that might bemuse the folks back in Ireland, where festivities are a lot more subdued, Kinealy notes.

For instance, St. Paddy’s Day Parades? Those originated here in the late 1700s. (George Washington was known to give his Irish soldiers the day off so they could join the celebrations, she says.)

And that quintessential dish of the holiday, corned beef — it may be delicious, but it’s most definitely not Irish.

As Smithsonian.com noted last year, in Gaelic Ireland, cows were a symbol of wealth and a sacred animal, kept more for their milk than their meat — which was only consumed once an animal’s milking days were over. In the Irish diet, meat meant pork. It wasn’t until Britain conquered most of Ireland that Irish “corned beef” came into existence — to satisfy the beef-loving English.

New England Patriots Offseason Moves: 2014 Season outlook after the first wave of free agency

After one week of the new NFL year, which is the beginning of free agency, it is clear that the New England Patriots are realizing that they only have a small window left to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. With Tom Brady at the age of 37 and the other AFC rival Denver Broncos pulling off major signings on the first day it was obvious that New England had to counter-act those moves to keep pace with the Broncos. The patriots were able to complete 4 free agent signings, 2 offense and 2 defense, that I think will impact their upcoming season.

On the defensive side the Patriots had their best cornerback on the free agent market and had to try and get him back, however he would go on to sign with the aforementioned Denver Broncos. With this glaring need now at the cornerback position, the Patriots immediately struck deals with two of the best corners on the market. They signed Darrelle Revis, arguably the best cover corner in professional football, and recently troubled Seattle Seahawk Brandon Browner. Both cornerbacks are very talented and look to help solidify what looks like one of the best secondaries going in to next season.

For the offense, the Patriots were able to  improve at one of their weaker positions from last year, wide receiver. They re-signed one of quarterback Tom Brady’s most reliable receiver in Julian Edelman, and they were also able to bring in a tall big body receiver to help at the goal line, Brandon Lafell from the Carolina Panthers. All in all, I really liked the start of the offseason for the Pats and feel  they can improve even more in this next season.
