Bringing in Back-Up!!! Lillard, DeRozan Headline All-Star Reserves for 2014 All-Star Weekend!!!

With NBA All Star Weekend just a few weeks away, fans were eager to see who will join their voted-in starters in the NBA’s ultimate showcase on February 16th. On January 30th, they got their answer. Unlike the starters, the reserves for the All-Star teams are voted by the coaches and general managers around the league. For the Eastern Conference, Chris Bosh joins his teammates LeBron James and Dwayne Wade for his 9th All Star Appearance. The East will feature three first time All-Stars consisting of the Raptors’ Demar DeRozan, Atlanta’s Paul Millsap, and John Wall of the Washington Wizards. Completing the East roster, Joe Johnson returns to the All-Star game along with the Pacers’ Roy Hibbert and Chicago’s Joakim Noah.

Coming off the bench for the West, Houston Rockets All-Stars Dwight Howard and James Harden head to New Orleans along with fellow Texas player Dirk Nowiztki of the Dallas Mavericks. As Portland Trailblazers LaMarcus Aldridge heads to his 3rd All Star game, he won’t be alone for he is joined by teammate Damian Lillard appearing in his first All-Star game. Rounding out the West will be superstar point guards Chris Paul of the LA Clippers and Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs.

With the rosters for the Eastern and Western All-Stars set, anticipation continues to build as the more and more spots prepare to get filled for other events including the Sprite Slam Dunk contest, Foot Locker 3-Point Shootout, the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, and others. Party time is almost here for New Orleans and it can’t get here soon enough.

Bill Cosby Returns to TV with a New Show on NBC

Bill Cosby returns to TV with a new family sitcom, which airs on NBC. NBC has not yet released more information on the upcoming show, but is hoping audiences will feel as comfortable when The Cosby Show aired on network television so many years ago.

It is great to see Bill Cosby back on the TV screen again. Watching him as a child brought laughter to me constantly, but also exposed real life issues that families possibly go through in their lifetime.

Bill Cosby was always funny as a comedian and actor, which was a source that sparked interests in being funny myself to friends and family members of my own. One technique that I thought was valuable to my stand-up acts was making my face look funny in order to appeal to audiences. Yet another performance trick that Cosby used was keeping his comedy clean for all age groups, which I will do the same thing when performing in front of certain groups of individuals.

I am not the only one that is excited for the return of Bill. Amanda McClain, a communications professor at Holy Family University in Philadelphia, stated, “Bill Cosby will always going to be welcomed into people’s homes because of nostalgia for the Huxtables.”

Other stars have made a return to television besides Bill Cosby. Michael J. Fox with his show “The Michael J. Fox Show”, and for the upcoming Superbowl on Sunday, Bob Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier are together on screen for a yogurt commercial.

I will have to wait for more upcoming news for what could be a new highly anticipated sitcom starring Bill Cosby.

Some Friendships In Your Life Are Meant to Last Forever

There are so many people that you are going to meet in your life time. Many people that you meet will be of no importance to your life. There are people that you meet when you’re depositing money at the bank, there’s people you meet when you are walking your dog on a Saturday morning, at a meeting, in one of your classes and so on. Those people are just back ground people in your life just like you are the back ground person in their life in that moment. Then there’s other people that you will remember because they went to high school with you, or college, but that still doesn’t mean that they will be important in a few years or that they were important at all, it just means that they are in your long term memory and you remember how they are because you saw them in high school/college for four years.
These interactions compare to the days in the year. There will be way more days where nothing important happens and you will not remember anything about them in the long run. We only remember the days that something exceptional happens. For example, the day you get your license, your high school prom, first kiss, getting married, having your children, etc. Most likely in these memorable days will be included the day that you met your best friend. Which is funny because the day you meet your future best friend, you do not think that they will be so important to you but then after years of friendship pass you realize that you still remember the first day you met them. Is that because your brain somehow knew to save that information in your “memory files” because it knew there was something special about this person that was going to cause them to be important in the future, who knows?
Best friends may come and go sometimes but I believe that sometimes know when people are going to be in your life forever. Most likely you will have one or two best friends from high school your whole life that you keep in contact with or even hang out with all the time. Even more permanent, I think, are friends that you meet in college or in your home town because they will most likely always be near to you in terms of location. People tend to become close to other people that live near to them. Even here at UCF, all the friends that I have made are people who are from Miami like myself. Why? Because people just tend to be more comfortable around people that are similar to them and because that means that the friendships I have created will be more permanent because we’re from the same place. Having best friends is a wonderful thing and definitely something you want to treasure for the rest of your life. “Maybe our best friends are our soul mates and crushes are just people to have fun with.” – Sex and The City.

Richard Sherman Steals the Show and Send the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl

News Photo: Cornerback Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks takes…

If I had to describe Richard Sherman in a few words, I’d say: Best Cornerback in the NFL. Interesting enough, Sherman would say the exact same things about himself and probably wouldn’t need any prompting. Richard Sherman may be one of the cockiest, brashest, in-your-face athletes in North America and I couldn’t love it more. I believe the best about his excessive confidence is that he more than backs up week after week. About 2-3 years back, Darelle Revis was the de facto answer for best cornerback in the NFL. He came off one of the greatest seasons for a defensive back & led his team to multiple AFC championships. Then along came Sherman, who at the height of Revis’ popularity challenged him for his title very loud & publicly but as well as on the field. He claimed that he was better than the Jets’ All-Pro defensive back about 2 seasons ago; and to reiterate an old cliche, numbers never lie. There hasn’t been a Corner in the league who has performed better than Sherman in the last 2 seasons as he is either at or near the top for all statistical categories for his position. Not to mention he also led the league in interceptions this season with 8, amassing 16 INTs in the last 2 seasons. Although all of this isn’t what has Sherman in the news these days, it’s this post game interview:

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/wI_Jq6_Kb9Q” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

I watched both of the conference championship playoff games that weekend so I was able to witness this video live in it’s full context. To paint the scene: it was the last drive of the game, the Seahawks were up 23-17 and the 49ers were driving and now in the redzone. Colin Kaepernick seemed to be up to his late game heroics once again, then all of sudden the Niners called a pass play and then Kaepernick floated the ball to the endzone to Crabtree. Sherman was guarding him & read the play, he tipped the ball up and his linebacker caught it, effectively sending the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl.

Samsung Glass: Pretty Much Just Google Glass, But Late On The Game

Samsung Electronics is planning to release their “new” technology in the fall. The device is seemingly similar to Google Glass, which was shown at the Augmented World Expo last year. Google Glass is still in test stages and being further developed for mass retail. Samsung’s “Galaxy Glass” is a small computer that can be attached to glasses and instead of using a mouse or standard input devices, it uses voice commands. Rumor has it that they will be unveiling this at the Internationale Funkausstellung trade show in Berlin. There is still talk about whether the technology will be ready by then, but it looks promising since they have already released a similar product, the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch. Unfortunately, the watch is not as exciting as people had anticipated at it is only capable of a handful of functions, and the user must already have their smartphone within arms reach. The watch is able to answer phone calls using voice control, and taking and sharing photos and videos.

They have admitted that they don’t believe this device will generate any profit in the beginning but they hope that as the technology advances, they will be able to better market it. I think that the complete lack of hype over the Smartwatch would have been a great indication that they shouldn’t jump the gun, but apparently their strategy is a little more aggressive. I think that this device is definitely a thing of the future, but you can’t push a product on a market that is not willing to spend big bucks on an “augmented reality.”

Universal’s New Diagon Alley Addition Brings More Magic to the Harry Potter Attractions

On Thursday Universal announced the addition to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter adding Diagon Alley. The project is still under construction and is scheduled to open sometime this summer.

The project is to be a huge addition which will include a Hogwarts Express train, a ride based on Gringotts Wizarding Bank, a Leaky Cauldron restaurant, shops and much more.

There is, however, a catch to this new installment.  The new Hogwarts Express train will take visitors from Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure to Diagon Alley in Universal Studios. To make this trip, park goers will have to purchase park-to-park tickets. The train ride itself is an iconic part of the books and films and you can bet that Harry Potter fans across the globe will be packing themselves in to experience the new magical adventure.

Familiar sights from the films such as the Leaky Cauldron will be seen and exploitable, but new surprises await guests. The installment of Knockturn Alley will show visitors the darker side of the wizarding world, featuring Borgin and Burkes, a shop known for selling mysterious items. Apparel such as Death Eater masks, skulls and other items can be purchased inside.

The shops will be selling new Harry Potter apparel as well such as Death Eaters’ masks, skulls, and other mysterious items.

For now we can only picture what we’ve seen from the films and wait eagerly to see more of the world many of us grew up with but could never explore. From the looks of things, it’ll be worth the wait.

Bidding Wars for NFL’s 2014 “Thursday Night Football”: Who Will Win, and Who Would Benefit Most?

After mixed results for NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football, the NFL is finally letting go of it’s exclusivity of Thursday night games. Although TNF has brought growth to the league’s cable network, which is now carried on nearly all major cable and satellite providers in the country, NFL is not seeing the ratings it would like for Thursday nights. Averaging 8 million viewers a game (versus the average 20 million seen by NBC’s Sunday Night Football), the belief is viewership is limited by two major factors. One being that the games just aren’t that good due to shorter prep times for the teams who have only a few days between Sunday’s game and Thursday’s, as well as NFL’s arguably silly ‘everyone should get a Thursday night game’ practices. The other limiting factor seems to be that the NFL Network is just inherently limited due to the fact that it’s a cable network, you can’t just tune into the game on your ‘rabbit ears’ and enjoy. So, NFL’s solution: offer a one year deal for Thursday Night Football to a broadcast network as a test.
The deal, which is reportedly being bid on by NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, is not very clear, as it would include somewhere between 6 and 13 games in the 2014 NFL season, and the NFL is retaining simulcasting rights so the games would also air on NFL Network. Additionally, the deal is only for 2014, in case this ‘test’ doesn’t go as well as the NFL would like, and would allow them to go back to NFL Network exclusivity in 2015. But the question is, which network is willing to gamble their current fall schedule ratings and millions of dollars for something that might just be a complete failure.
NBC, CBS, and FOX all have fledgling cable sports networks they would like to get off the ground, and TNF would be a great way to do that, but the simulcasting on NFL Network puts a wrench in that equation. It’s doubtful the NFL would like to see the games being simulcast on two cable only networks, as it would eat into NFL Network’s revenue and still limit ratings as opposed to broadcast. So the NFL will most likely ask a price high enough that it’ll force whichever network wins to choose broadcast over their cable network.
Network breakdown (including my projected chance of each network winning the bid):
CBS: America’s most watched network is home to the highest rated show on television, The Big Bang Theory, which currently airs on Thursday nights. Big Bang is the anchor of CBS’s Thursday lineup, which makes it difficult to conceive CBS would uproot that success and risk loosing shows to something being simulcast on another network. Not to mention, CBS has the benefit of half of the Sunday NFL games already. They’d prefer to push TNF to CBS Sports Network, and the NFL would prefer that not happen. Chance of bid win: 5%.
ABC: Number 3 of the big 4 networks, ABC has been struggling ever since it lost Monday Night Football back in 2005, and could benefit from an NFL return. However, two of ABC’s highest rated shows, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, both air on Thursday nights. On the other hand, moving those shows to Sunday and either Tuesday or Wednesday respectively would massively help those night’s ratings, and the addition of TNF would eliminate the problem of ABC’s ‘Thursday @ 8 death slot’. Chance of winning bid: 15%.
NBC: As the lowest rated of the major networks, NBC could always use another guaranteed ratings boost, and has virtually nothing to lose. The fact that TNF would only last for the fall means NBC would have to come up with 7 new hours of programming in the spring, which would hurt, a lot. However, NBC already has Sunday Night Football and America’s new favorite singing competition, The Voice, which means with the addition of TNF, NBC would be likely to have 10 of the highest rated hours of broadcast TV in the fall, which just might bump them ahead of ABC. Likelihood of winning bid: 40%.
FOX: Ever since The X Factor premiered, it’s done nothing but pull down FOX’s ratings, and as of this past fall, it was some of the lowest 3 hours of programming FOX has had in recent memory. Scrapping The X Factor, replacing the results with TNF, moving the other half of FOX’s current Thursdays, the always ratings-reliable Glee, to Wednesdays and pairing it with a new show seems like a perfect solution. Plus, FOX wouldn’t have the other network’s worries of spring Thursday replacement thanks to American Idol. The only downsides: inevitable conflicts with MLB playoff games, and TNF bleeding into close to 2 hours of affiliate programming, as FOX ends network programming at 10pm. Bid win chances: 40%.
It’s a dead heat between NBC and FOX, but if I had to give an edge, it’d be to FOX, simply due to the likelihood that the NFL would like to spread ‘primetime game wealth’ around, rather than have one network dominate both Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football. Only time will tell.

Shark Attacks Rise in Western Australia

Over the past three years seven people have been killed by shark attacks of the coast of Western Australia. The government is taking several steps to combat the shark situation of the coastline. The first step that is starting to cause quite a bit of controversy is a culling program that has been put in place over the past week.

Culling is the process of removing a breeding animal, such as Great White Sharks, from a complete population of animals. The program that is currently being implemented is boats using a large fishing line with dozens of hooks connected to it. The hooks are connected to barrels and then loaded with dead fish to try and lure the large sharks. The hooks will pierce sharks and kill them.

This program is hearing quite a bit of complaints from animal activists about this recent culling process. People are saying how the hooking could be lodged in these sharks for hours and hours even after they are dead.

Another program that has been in place for the last several years is tagging many of these Great White Sharks in search of tracking where these dangerous predators are in relation to popular beaches throughout the coastline. Satellite linked monitors can track the sharks as well making some of the beaches much more safe for beach goers. Along with the satellites, seabed monitors are working together to find even more accurate readings of these scary sea monsters.

Hopefully the shark attacks will soon be controlled and the tourism of the land down under will remain unharmed.

Oh Where Oh Where Has Good Music Gone?

Music has taken a toll for the worse. The 21st century has brought upon some of the worst types of music. whatever happened to good lyrical music or even instrumental music that came from the soul? America has lost taste in good meaningful music. The great music of the 60’s 70’s 80’s and 90’s are long gone.  Even popular music and rap has started to adapt this type of genre and has let it influence it in all sorts of ways. The part that is mostly upsetting is that most people that know this are willing to look the other way and not acknowledge this trend.

We have shifted into this Electronic Dance Music fab. The drug influenced music takes electronic beats and makes a so called euphoric experience. What most people don’t understand is that the music itself is like a drug, it hits abnormal brain patterns when listening to it. hence this is why most get a jittery cant stop, wont stop feeling.  This electronic dance music is starting to take over every type of music and making it all sound like just noise.

There is no emotional connection left in this type of music, the meaningful lyrics artist used to pour their hearts out to has become just casual phrases drowned out by thumping and bumping noise.  Talking to people that work in the industry it is very upsetting  to hear that they want to encourage the exploting of this genre because of the money it produces instead of the emotion and conection it is supposed to make you feel. Just because it stimulates the ears and the brain waves in the brain doesn’t make it music.

How Today’s Technology will affect Tomorrow’s Jobs

Who does not love innovation right? Innovation, defined by the Webster’s dictionary, is defined as “an act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods.” Innovation has been a common theme in the United States’ history.

For example, take the Industrial Revolution. Practices that were always done by the hands of workers were now swept aside by machines. What exactly does this mean? This means that goods were produced not only at a faster rate, but also in higher quantity. During this time, efficiency was at an all time high and innovation was winning by a landslide. The only problem was innovation itself. Even though innovation creates new and better jobs, it kills some jobs off.

As we speak, we are currently in a digital revolution. In the last couple of decades, jobs ranging from bank to clerical jobs have been replaced just like the workers were. It is very important to understand that even though new jobs are made by innovation, there is a disconnect in the delivery of resources to the people. Most of the people who have benefited from this digital revolution has been a small group highly skilled workers and owners of capital. An example of this would be the Apple Company. In the last decade, we have seen iPods, iMacs, iPhones, and iPads take the consumer market by storm. Where did all that money go? The money did not fall into the hands of the masses, but rather to the main owners of Apple. After the owners of Apple, the skilled workers who made these products would receive the next payday. After these two groups of people, the money will have to wait until it reaches more of the common laborers.

In my opinion, it is important to heed this message. As innovation begins, there will be more opportunities and growth. However, it is important to understand that these opportunities will not be given to everyone.
