Cincinnati Bengals vs. Miami Dolphins Recap

The Miami Dolphins could not have headed into Thursday’s Halloween day matchup with the aptly dressed Cincinnati Bengals in any more desperate need of a win. The team was coming in off of four straight losses while their foes were on a four game winning streak; all of the odds seemed to be stacked against the Dolphins.

The game started in a defensive (boring) fashion, as neither team was able to score in the first quarter with Dolphins rookie kicker missing his only try of the quarter, continuing his rookie slump.

The next quarter would be opened by Cincinnati as they went on a 6 minute drive the resulted in a field goal scoring the game’s first points.

Two drives later, though, Miami went on a 6 minute drive highlighted by a 40 yard Ryan Tannehill-to-Mike Wallace connection. The drive was capped off by a Ryan Tannehill quarterback sneak and the Dolphins sent the game into halftime up 10-3 after Caleb Sturgis managed to break his field goal slump on a 36 yarder which was set up by an ill-advised Andy Dalton interception.

The Bengals methodically drove down the field to open the third quarter and it appeared as if the Dolphins 3rd quarter woes would continue until Dalton threw his second interception of the game which pro-bowl cornerback Brent Grimes returned for a 94 yard touchdown. 17-3 Dolphins.

Just as it seemed The Bengals may be ready to curl up and call it a day on the road, Andy Dalton led his team on a five and a half minute touchdown drive to bring the game within a score just before the conclusion of the third quarter.

The Bengals scored their second touchdown of the game to open the final quarter, tying the game at 17.

With only a minute a thirteen seconds left in the contest the Bengals took the lead on a field goal and the ghosts of this Miami season reared their ugly heads again. Another second half meltdown.

However Ryan Tannehill had other ideas. On the heels of a great Brian Hartline catch, he led his offense down the field, and when it mattered most Caleb Sturgis nialed a 44 yard field goal.

Overtime.

The two teams traded drives back and forth, perhaps being able to take long range field goals but instead opting to put their opponent in adverse field position. Finally with less than seven minutes remaining in the overtime period, Dolphins punter Brandon Fields was able to pin the Bengals at the seven yard line. After two incomplete passes, pro bowl defensive end Cameron Wake beat his man to the inside on a stunt and sacked Dalton in the endzone for the only the 3rd game winning safety in league history.

Who Is The Most Under Appreciated Player In All Of Sports? How About This Guy.

Who is the most under appreciated player in all of sports in my opinion?  It would have to be Tony Romo, the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.

Every year I have to see this guy get criticized to no end.  “He can’t win the big game,” “He has a great team around him.”  These are things I hear year in and year out.  And it is starting to get on my nerves.  If it wasn’t for Romo the Cowboys would be nowhere and no where fast.  He is the reason the Cowboys are even relevant this day in age.  He is the heart and soul of the Dallas Cowboys and it sickens me how much criticism this guy takes.

Over Tony Romo’s career he has thrown for over 29,000 yards, nearly 200 touchdowns and has a 96.1 QB rating.  his overall win loss record is 59-42 and has a career completion percentage around 65%.  Those are the numbers of an elite quarterback.  Not to mention the guy has an uncanny ability to keep plays going and escape constant pressure.

Those are the numbers of a guy who gets scrutinized constantly on and off the field.  Yes I said off the field.  For some reason I can’t fathom.  He gets heat for playing golf and going on vacations, while other football players are out there getting drunk and beating up women.  Do we ever hear about Tony Romo going out and getting sloppy drunk?  Do we ever see Tony Romo getting in fights or getting arrested?  No we don’t.  We see this guy lead his team year in and year out and get absolutely no appreciation for it.  He is one of the best QB’s I have ever seen.  And I just want to put it out there that he is not only the most under appreciated player in the NFL but all of sports.  A lot of teams would love to have the production that Tony Romo has produced.  It is time that he gets mentioned in a more positive light.

The Two Very Different Sides Of a Break-Up

All things must come to an end…the good, the bad, and the ugly. The majority of people will experience the heart ache but the ways that they endure them are always different. They say hearts don’t break even and they usually never do. There are two different perspectives to a break-up, I’ve separated them into two views, the “Break-uper” and the “Break-upee”. Which one has it worse? How differently do both individuals feel? For the purpose of this blog, and the fact that I was hanging out with my friend Myles. He helped me into picking this topic with my side being the view of the “break-upper” and him playing the role of the “Break-upee”.

The Break-upper is the person that breaks up with the person that they were with. They end the current relationship that they have and move on with their life. Most people at first would consider this person to have it easier, and sometimes they do have the easier way out and feel relieved after the break up but other times it’s not that way. The person that breaks up with that other person also has to live with the fact that they ended what they had and if they regret it afterwards they know that it was their fault. It’s a lot of pressure to take on when you have someone telling you that you completely broke them. You have to live with hurting that other person, and missing them as well because just because you broke up with them doesn’t mean you won’t miss them. On the other hand, it was what you wanted to do at the end of the day even if the other person didn’t want to, therefore it’s arguably easier.

The other view of a break-up is through the “break-upee” I’ll be writing this view from the view of Myles and his experience. He said that he felt his world was ending and there was nothing else to live for. He lacked motivation and only found comfort while he was going to the gym. He picked up extra activities to keep his mind off the break up. He wishes that the bad never happened and that him and his girlfriend were still together but he knows that he wouldn’t want her back now after everything that has happened. The person that that gets broken up with will feel it bad, even when you see it coming, it still hurts. However, after all the pain and all the self torture, you may realize that the break up was something that needed to happen. That’s the optimistic way of looking at the situation, if things don’t work out like that, at least you know all is temporary.

Kurt Vile and the Violators Give Epic Rock Performance in Orlando

Psychedelic rock artist Kurt Vile performed a sold-out show at The Social in Orlando last Saturday night.

Following a day of rain and a cold front, music lovers crowded into the downtown concert venue The Social to see a performance by Kurt Vile and opener Beach Fossils.

The show began with a performance by VBA. VBA is a band fronted by the drummer for Kurt Vile, Vince Nudo. The trio played a set of fuzzy garage rock with driving bass lines, ambient guitar, smashing drums, and passionate vocals. The tone sounded like a mix of garage rock and 80s Sonic Youth. They’re brief but intense performance got the crowd energized for the show to follow.

Beach Fossils, an indie rock band, co-headlining the show with Kurt Vile performed second. They’re forty minute set was a fast-paced rush of treble rich guitar hooks and one-two-punch melodies. The songs got the crowd moving with couples dancing in the pit, where people stood inches apart from one another to see the band. During the performance of the title track off the band’s second LP, “Clash the Truth”, the singer made his way into the crowd and began crawling on his knees as he repeated the songs last lyrics “nothing real, nothing true.” The power packed set ended with the singer going on a gut-spilling diatribe as the rest of the band played with such intensity that the singer’s words were difficult to distinguish. From what I was able to hear he was telling the audience of his own struggles to get where he is and that they should follow their dreams. Only the singer knows what he said.

Kurt Vile closed the night coming onstage before an anxious and excited full house. His long dark hair continuously fell into his face as he pressed his lips directly onto the microphone and slurred out his lyrics over his beautifully composed riffs and blues solos. Despite seeming a bit ‘off’ during the show Vile didn’t disappoint the crowd as he tore through some of his most well known songs with blistering improvised guitar solos and jams that lasted minutes longer than the tracks typically do on album. Vile left the stage with a wave and a smile as the audience continued to applaud the rocking performance.

Included below is the title track from Kurt Vile’s most recent LP and a performance on KEXP:

Georgia Man Arrested For Burning His 10-year-old Daughter and Dumping Her In A Trash Can

It was around 3:40 am this Saturday when the Gwinnett County Police Department received a phone call from a man claiming he wanted to commit suicide. The man also explained that his daughter was no longer alive, and that the cause of death was from drinking “some type of chemical.” Police officers headed to the young man’s residence located in Lawrenceville, GA only to see something they were definitely not expecting. Upon arrival, police spotted the man who appeared to have made the 911 call standing outside his apartment complex. It was then that the man who has been identified as Eman Moss simply directed police officers toward a metal trash can near the recreational area without uttering a word. Much to their dismay, when the police officers lifted the lid off the trash can, they saw the burned body of a 10 year-old girl inside who has now been identified as Emani Moss. Although there was not an act of fire in the apartment or trash can when officers arrived on the scene, investigators have confirmed that there most definitely is evidence of a fire having took place. After thoroughly checking the apartment and finding no other suspects inside, police officers immediately arrested the slain girl’s stepmother, Tiffany Moss, as well as her father Eman. Both are now being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center, and have been charged with felony murder, first-degree cruelty to children, and concealing a body.

It is my prayer that police officers as well as the investigators who were on the scene are able to get a confession from either Eman or Tiffany about what really happened to the young girl. Although it is quite apparent that she was indeed burned, a confession could help bring closure. These two owe it not only to Emani but to those closest to her as well to tell what actually occurred, as well as what could have possibly motivated them to commit such a horrid act.

UConn Student Blog Goes Too Far in School Rivalry

College is a time of self-discovery and decision making that impacts the rest of a person’s life. Even though we are all off on our own paths, one thing we, as a student body, come together on is our school spirit and love of our respective universities.

The University of Central Florida’s football team has recently been ranked in a new conference.  Our football team has progressively gotten better and more formidable since our university was officially established as a university.  Knights’ fans are amongst the most supportive in the nation.  Just last week, the Knights’ faced off against the University of Connecticut and won, putting the Huskies to shame.  A student at UConn “welcomed [us] to the hateborhood”.  Understandably the student has anger towards the Knights’ for showing no mercy to the Huskies, in their losing streak of zero wins in seven games.  The student blog doesn’t just stop at bashing the football team, they attack the university in its’ entirety and even goes so far as to attack the state of Florida.

School rivalries do nothing more than create hatred and prejudice.  Once the students of UConn and UCF have graduated and are working in their respective careers that hatred could carry over and affect their adult lives.  Cheering for your schools team is part of college life, but some people take friendly jabs to a new level that borders on bullying. Students have been known to start fights over something as simple as overhearing another student cheering for the opposing team.  There is a fine line between friendly banter and picking a fight with words.

Great Expectations: The Assumptions of College Professors.

Since my first college class, including lower level classes, I have had teachers tell me “You should have learned this before.” A statement that, in my opinion, is unfair coming from high school to college. Unless their is a pre-requiste that specifically in needed how can you assume I know how to do something that requires teaching?

In many majors including mine, it was assumed I knew how to create graphics. While I have taught myself how to do many things that enhance my major graphics have always been a struggle for me and every production class I have taken has needed them but I have yet to be properly taught and am not required a class that has taught me how to make them. Unfortunately, I am not the only person struggling with this. How can students just be expected to know things, especially difficult things that you can not just memorize how to do to pass?

While we have the tutoring center on campus, they do not tutor in how to do things such as make graphics or edit or anything that generally involves projects for students in Computer Science, Communications or Art majors. How are we expected to learn when many times our professors can’t even show us during their office hours or we’re afraid to ask because we “should have learned this before.” It puts a strain on our education and we’re not sure how to learn the process and take the easy way out making a simple temporary solution. With all of our fees, there should be a place we can go being in smaller majors to learn how to do things like build graphics or edit on a new system, just like math and english majors can ask for help in the tutoring center for their struggles.

The Price of Happiness in the Workplace

This past Monday I decided to leave my current job after a few months of employment. This decision wasn’t the easiest to make and I had to look for guidance from my friends and family, which for me was a huge deal because I like figuring things out on my own. To help aide my decision I even made a pro/con list, my go to method for making decisions (a close second: flipping a coin).

My reason for quitting wasn’t complex, in fact, it was simple as an adjective: happiness.

The truth of the matter is that I wasn’t happy. When we get older, we are told to do what makes us happy. However, that mentality isn’t really embedded into our minds when we are young. There’s an unspoken list of rules young people are required to do without question. Here are some of the unspoken rules:

1. If in school, get good grades.

2. Maintain a job and a social life.

3. Manage to keep your head in check.

Happiness isn’t really on this list, which is why I let my happiness fall to the back burner without even realizing it. I was just going through the motions and I guess I was feeling a tad robotic with my consistent schedule.

Old or young, we should be doing things we love to do (or things we don’t hate as much). Happiness isn’t some fictional adjective that only exists in movies and TV shows. Happiness is something that can be acquired and that’s what I hope to achieve at wherever my next job will be. I know work is work and I may sound extremely optimistic, but I have a good feeling about my quest for happiness in the workplace.

The Secrets Behind “The Price is Right”

I have been watching The Price is Right for as long as I could remember. My grandmother loves game shows and this happens to be one of her favorites. Anyone who knows what it is has wanted to be a participant on there at least once. I mean, who doesn’t want to spin the big wheel, bid “one dollar” or even play the oh-so popular Plinko? At one point in our lives, we have all wanted to be that lucky person that got to “come on down.” However, it isn’t just luck. There are secrets to getting on The Price is Right that millions of people never knew about until they went to be on the show.

First there are two separate lines – one line for people who requested tickets online before-hand and one for the people who dropped in on the show. The people with the priority tickets are pretty much guaranteed a seat in the audience and the others get chosen to fill in the rest of the seats. Next, your picture is taken in line and sent to producers for review. That’s right, producers. People seem to forget that this is actually a Hollywood production. After that, each person is asked questions in an audition-like style. This allows them to see the personalities of the audience members and who could possibly be entertaining or interesting on their show. Last, everyone is let in to the studio and the show begins.

As you see, there is a process that not too many people even know about. Becoming an audience member is one thing, but actually being a contestant is not just random luck like most think. If you are chosen, you must have had something about you that the producers thought could work for the show. After this, you play on!

Miami Model is Fashionably Violent

Sunday evening, just as the sun dipped below the horizon a South Florida model, Shadae Scott was arrested. What could a model do that causes her to be incarcerated? Is it drugs? Violence? How about the perfect mix of both? Arrested for and charged for one count of domestic battery, Scott allegedly stabbed her boyfriend Kevin Wiggins multiple times with her pink pocket knife.

What could cause a model to be so fashionably violent, you ask? Wiggins claims that he and Scott got into a verbal altercation after she realized his dog consumed her stash of marijuana. She then allegedly kicked him out of the apartment after hiding all of his stuff. After asking where his computer was hidden, she began to attack. He then suffered two small knife strikes to the face and head area and received one wound across his hand. Scott, on the other hand claims that the fight was over dinner plans, the altercation turned physical when he refused to let her leave the apartment, she then pulled out her pocket knife in self-defense. Scott claims that during the Scott walked into her knife and cut himself, which would presumably explain the “small lacerations” on Wiggins body and a slash above his left ear.

Scott’s modeling profile and photos can be seen on multiple talent agency websites, and now the Broward County Sheriff’s office. Scott has no previous criminal record in the state of Florida, her bond has been set at $3,500 and she has been ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from Wiggins at all time
